SO, WHAT HAPPENED AT ANNUAL CONFERENCE?
As I write this, it is just 3 days after the conclusion of the Mississippi United Methodist Annual Conference,
which met June 5-8, at the Jackson Convention Center complex. I especially wish to thank our Galloway lay
delegates for their time and attention during those four days: Sherry Russum, Brad Chism, Pat Taylor, and
alternate delegate Kay Barksdale. Galloway member Red Moffat was also in attendance as an equalizing
delegate. All of Galloway’s clergy were there as delegates: Rev. Emily Sanford, Rev. Eddie Spencer, and
myself. We were joined also by our retired clergy, Rev. T.W. Lewis, Rev. Ed King, Rev. Don Fortenberry, and
Bishop Clay Lee. Also there were clergy in extension ministries who still relate to Galloway, including Rev.
Lisa Garvin, Rev. Joey Shelton, Rev. Elizabeth Henry, Rev. Paige Swaim Presley, and Rev. Mike Hicks. Also
formally relating to Galloway was Rev. Lori Galambos, who was ordained deacon, and Rev. Jenna Johnson,
who was commissioned a deacon. More on the ordination service later…
One of the more involved processes of annual conference was the election of delegates to the 2020 General
Conference and the 2020 Jurisdictional Conference (both normally quadrennial events). For both General
and Jurisdictional Conference, we elected 10 delegates; 5 laity, and 5 clergy.
The following are the laity and clergy delegates for General Conference:
(Laity) (Clergy)
David Stotts Rev. Fred Britton
Dr. David Beckley Rev. Mattie Gibson
Latoya Redd Thompson Rev. Stephen Sparks
Ann Herrington Rev. Zach Beasley
Turner Arant Rev. Mitchell Hedegpeth
The following are the laity and clergy delegates for Jurisdictional Conference:
(Laity) (Clergy)
Jim Ainsworth Rev. Dr. Connie Shelton
Connie Walters Rev. Leanne Burris
Jaci Murden Rev. John Branning
Jan Hitt Rev. Amy Daniels
Steve McAlilly Rev. Dr. Embra Jackson
Pivotal to the conference’s theme of The Ower That makes us One, were the recurring elements of Bible
study, worship, fellowship, and service. These components were naturally woven into the schedule of
business sessions, and framed our days and nights. The service component—packing some 15,000 hygiene
kits—actually received rather significant TV coverage from WAPT. These kits, made to assist flood victims,
were matched by a whopping mission offering of $112,547, which will go to help in relief and recovery efforts
in flooded areas of Mississippi and also in Mozambique, where flooding has created a crisis.
For me, the highlight of the annual conference is the
ordination service, held this year on Friday evening, June
7th. Galloway’s own Bishop Clay Lee participated with us
in this very moving event, in which we commissioned 13,
and ordained 12, and brought 3 into Associate
Membership in the conference. During this service we
also formally recognized the orders of a minister from
another denomination, now faithfully ministering in the
UMC. As I mentioned earlier, two exceptionally gifted
women with Galloway ties were among those set apart
for ministry that night. Rev. Lori Galambos was ordained
deacon, and Rev. Jenna Johnson—newly graduated from
Union Seminary—was commissioned in this service. Our warmest congratulations to these two faithful
servants!

Galloway UMC is partnering with the MS Book Festival again this year, and we are honored to host
many of the panel discussions in the Foundery, Fellowship Center, and Sanctuary. While the
festival has a great team of volunteers on hand and Galloway staff will be responsible for security,
we would like to have Galloway Greeters to offer hospitality for each of the sessions in the
Sanctuary, Fellowship Center, and the Foundery. Responsibilities of a Galloway Greeter: smiling
and offering a welcoming presence while wearing a nametag and “ask me about Galloway” button,
directing people to restrooms, making sure people don’t bring food and drink into the Sanctuary
(sealed bottled water is allowed) and sharing a copy of Spotlight and/or other materials in the
narthex if they want to know more about Galloway. Greeters are needed on Friday, August 16
from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. as children’s authors speak to school children. On Saturday, we
will need greeters from 8:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Mississippi Street and Congress Street in front
of Galloway will be closed for the festival and with the attendance that is expected you may have
to park and walk farther away than you are accustomed. Feel free to view the full schedule on their
website at http://msbookfestival.com/
Please contact Rev. Emily Sanford at [email protected] to sign up to serve as a Galloway
greeter for the MS Book Festival.

"Godspell" at Galloway 1975 and Today!
Memories, community, new connections and reconnections were
made when the DARING Youth Choir from First UMC Allen, Texas
warmed the hearts of all those present.
The year was 1975. Galloway needed a youth director and –the
not yet Dr.—George Patton answered the call. His introduction to
the youth ministry was a presentation of the wildly popular
musical “Godspell”. It was a night that changed the course of
many of lives.
Fast forward to 2019. Rev. Rusty King, who played Jesus in that
1975 Smith Park production, returned to Galloway with his youth
choir to present “Godspell”. It was a great evening of music and
theater.
Patton says, “These teens and their message are proof that the
world will be okay.” Galloway is grateful for the DARING Youth
Choir’s gift of “Godspell”.

We are excited to welcome Maura McIntosh Fields on acoustic guitar. Her songwriting frequently
incorporates some of the old hymns into new original works in the uniquely “Maura” style which is a mix of
Anne Murray, Joni Mitchell, Carole King and James Taylor. She is a veteran performer whose rich sound and
poignant lyrics can move the listener to deep worship. She also has quite a sense of humor and can pull off
one of her “silly” songs for kids that leave the whole audience in laughter. Mark your calendars and RSVP
with April Vestal at 601-353-9691 or [email protected] by Monday, July 8 to reserve your spot.

GLORY SINGERS AND RINGERS
Mystery Trip 2019 July 28 – August 1, 2019
I would say that my MissionFest experience was humbling.
It was really nice to help those in need and see smiling
faces. It brought the whole youth group closer together
and closer to God. It was a really God experience to help
improve our community and get to know the people we
served. - Millie Gallarno
My favorite part of MissionFest was the worship at Grace
Place, because almost everyone was trying to participate
in worship. I also enjoyed the “inside” jokes we had at the
mission sites. - Luz Luna
My favorite part of MissionFest was serving at Grace
Place, because it is a big part of my church and because it
is a big impact. You get to see people and help serve them
directly. - Erin Hawkins
MissionFest was a great success! This year’s theme
for MissionFest was “In my Own Backyard”. This
year’s purpose was to help students realize that their
community is a mission field. Our students kicked off
MissionFest on Sunday, June 9th by partnering with
over 100 members of our congregation to pack
10,000 meals for Rise Against Hunger. The next day
our students served at the Bethlehem Center and
Methodist Children’s Home. Tuesday was another
day that involved feeding the hungry. During this
time, our students tied 4,300 bags for the Society of
St. Andrews. These bags will be used to fill 7 trailer
loads of sweet potatoes. These seven loads equal
over 320,000 servings of potatoes. The students
ended MissionFest by helping lead worship and
serving at Grace Place and serving at We Will Go.
Worship was led by Delta State student, Erin Wilson
and the Conference Family and Youth Ministry
Coordinator Mike Howington. Thanks to everyone
who assisted with MissionFest through serving,
praying, and donating.
