Next milestone: Total sanitation

National guidelines on total sanitation

• hygienic use of toilets

• personal hygiene (including handwashing with soap)

• use of safe water

• use of safe food

Processes of sustained change to move

towards total sanitation

1) Verify ODF status of village – households, institutions

2) Plan for next milestone (total sanitation), BUT

3) Focus on quality of ODF and two key behaviors as transition towards total

sanitation

• Hygienic use of toilets

• Handwashing with soap

Community surveillance

• Community itself detects the problem and fixes it in consultation with the

WASH-Coordiantion Committee (Ward or Village Development Committee) ;

an agreed check list is used to confirm the status

Reverification of ODF status

• Reverification from Ward- VDC (Village Development Committee) - District

through a monitoring process with agreed protocol

• Third party monitoring minimize any bias

• Ensure quality of toilets – upgrading, privacy, ventilation

informed choice materials; quality focus for masons, part of BCC

campaigns

• Ensure access by all at all times

• Require support for facilities for people with disabilities and people

having temporary difficulties (pregnant women, sick, etc)

Disability audit

• Two key behaviors – Hygienic use of latrines and HWWS

• Formative research study to find out the motivators and barriers to behavior

adoption

• Setting district-wide BCC strategy

• Designing BCC campaign in line with agreed communication objectives

• Total sanitation (post ODF) strategy has been developed in 3 districts out of 4

ODF districts where SNV works.

• 16 VDCs from 4 districts have developed total sanitation plans (and 12 VDCs

are in pipeline) since January 2015 till date

• The reverification exercise identified around 20% of latrines in Rukum district

needed to be improved after district had been declared ODF in 2014

(DWASHCC meeting agreed to launch a campaign against the set back).

• 470 latrines were improved between Feb to Sep 2016 in 3 post-ODF districts.

• 1300 HHs in two districts installed hand washing facilities during 7 months

from February 2016 till September 2016.
