Location: Gurdwara Sahib Tanah Rata, Cameron Highlands Date: January 21- 24, 2012 Target participants: School-leavers, college students & young professionals (18-25 years) Number of participants: 200

Activities: A regular feature and much-awaited event during the Chinese New Year holidays, this year’s Fellowship Camp saw a whopping participation from close to 200 youths! With seats for both the buses being snapped up early on and a list of participants on standby, many campers took to social media websites such as Facebook reminiscing previous camps and awaiting the day that they would begin their Fellowship Camp journey. A team of dedicated sewadars took the journey up to Camerons a few days in advance to ensure everything was setup including checking out the jungle trekking route twice for total safety! From day one of the camp till the last day, the spirit of Fellowship was strong and could be seen in each and every one of the campers – be it during the indoor or outdoor sessions! Many campers shared their personal feelings, thoughts and hopes during interesting and eye-opening sessions

21

with invited speakers. Simran sessions and daily Nitnem was observed by all campers who made it a point to be in the darbar on time. And when it came to outdoor activities, no amount of rain could damper the spirits of these campers! They braved the slightly soggy weather and completed the jungle trekking session that was successfully carried out by talented and experienced professional trainer Gurnam Singh. There was also a nostalgic impromptu reunion of sorts between past campers as many made a visit with their families during the duration of the camp. Needless to say, the bond created as campers lasts a lifetime which is what makes Fellowship Camp truly special!

Outcome: There was overwhelming response from participants to have another camp during the next long holidays (which would be Hari Raya) with many even requesting for confirmation on dates. Many are also keeping in touch with each other via social networking sites such as Facebook and will also be attending many of Sabha’s upcoming events. They were very charged up and requested for more such activities in the future.

4.7 The Mela this year was truly awesome, with the standard of Punjabi reaching even higher than previous years. Listening to the participants read, write and speak Punjabi filled all our hearts with hope and pride and a realisation that our theme for this year, ie 'Zubaan, Qaum dhi Jaan' was most appropriate. 6.0 Hola Mahalla 2012

Location : Kampung Pandan & Kelab Aman Date : March 17 to 18, 2012

Activities : The two-day Hola Mahalla Games 2012 took off to a great start with all teams arriving at the Kampung Pandan sports complex way ahead of time for a quick round of warm up and team strategizing. The games kicked off with a recitation of Ardas as well as singing of the national anthem. The first few track events to take place were the heats for the some of the relays as well as the field events like shot put and long jump. Not to be missed out, the younger children were also involved in their own “sports” which included fun games and telematches that were conducted by a team of very cheerful sewadars.

Another highlight of the day was the adrenalin-fuelled kabaddi match that left many spectators clinging to the edge of their seats wondering who would walk away victorious. Event after event, relay after relay saw team Sri Dasmesh taking an earlylead but they nonetheless faced tough competition from the other teams including those from Gurdwara Sahib Tatt Khalsa and Pulapol. The hockey competition at the 2012 SNSM Holla Mahalla was the second

23

time that the hockey match has been included in the Holla Mahalla competition. A total of 9 teams participated and around 72 boys played hockey averaging around 8 players a team. Although exhausted, all teams were assembled early at Kelab Aman for Team Games that included Football, Netball and Hockey, the Indoor Games which consisted of Carom, Scrabble, Chess, Checkers and a new inclusion into the games this year - Arm Wrestling. The inclusion of arm wrestling to the games stirred a lot of interest among all in attendance especially when there were challengers as young as 10 stepping up to the table for a showdown! On hand to judge was a professional arm wrestler who had represented the country in numerous matches and he also took time to share practical tips on this sport with the crowd. After two long days of battling it out in the arena, the Sri Dasmesh team emerged as overall Champions for the third time in the running, with Gurdwara Sahib Tatt Khalsa coming in second, followed by Gurdwara Sahib Pulapol in third position. Indeed, to sum it all up, it was a fun filled, challenging and beautiful weekend filled with great sportsmanship and brotherhood among all the teams.

7.0 Global Sikhs

Our past experiences in humanitarian relief have included serving in Disaster hit areas during the Aceh sea quake & tsunami (2004), Pakistan earthquake (2005), Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar (2008), Floods across West Malaysian states from Kedah to Johor, and most recently the nation wide floods in Thailand (2011). SNSM-GS is today recognised by the Bahagian Keselamatan Negara (BKN), Malaysia as a NGO partner involved in disaster relief, and is called upon to attend briefings from time to time.

Based on the Strategic Plan of Action formed after extensive meetings since December 2011, the committee recommended that SNSM-GlobalSikhs should continue to build on its experience in humanitarian disaster relief as part of the wider community outreach. The aim of this programme being to establish a corp of volunteers who will be well trained and equipped to respond to emergencies arising from accidents or natural occurrences.

The first call for volunteers was made during the presentation on Global Sikhs given at the SNSM Grand Vaisakhi Event at IYC, Cheras on April 6 2012. Subsequently a meeting of volunteers was called at Sabha House at which the following individuals, Rajinder Singh, Sukhdarshan Singh, Ir Tejinder Singh and Harbinder Singh were present. The other members of the initial core team are Satwant Singh and Ajit Singh.

In the near term the SNSM-GS Disaster Relief programme will select suitable candidates to form a core team of administrators, who will then begin the process to re-establish contacts with previous volunteers, recruit new volunteers and identify training modules & trainers. The core service areas of Medical, Logistical support, and provision of Food have been recognised as our key skill sets. The goal is to have a large pool of qualified medical personnel to call upon in an emergency; supported by other individuals with ground experience in logistics and management.

The long-term goal of the programme is to develop expertise and build the capacity to provide full-fledged camp management services comprising of Medicine, Food, Shelter and Water & Sanitation. This effort is to be backed up by a well-trained team of technical personnel, support crews in cooking, logistics, para-medicine, etc.

24

To ensure the sustainability of this sizable undertaking, we envisionworking in strategic partnership with organisations in their respective Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts.

7.1 Global Sikhs Planning Report

Global Sikhs team went through a strategic planning exercise to: 1. Revive Global Sikhs 2. Perform a Gap Analysis of the Global Sikhs then and now, in terms of focus

and organization strength 3. Determine the Programs it should run based on current needs and also to

proactively address future issues by curbing it from now. This strategic planning exercise was carried out in multiple workshops leveraging on subject matter experts (SMEs) brought in to assist the current pro-tem committee of Global Sikhs: Datuk Suret Singh, Datin Kuldip Kaur, Dalbir Singh (CISCO), BK Sidhu, Dr. Harinder Rai Singh, Jasrinder Kaur, Sukdev Singh (Success), Jaspal Singh, Habhajan Singh, Amarjit Kaur, Dr. Jasbir Kaur, Nancy and Harbinder Singh. Among the SMEs were Taranjit Singh, Lashvinder Kaur and Jagdish Singh (IMPACT). The deliverables of the Strategic Planning Exercise was a Strategic Plan for Global Sikhs. Please refer to attachment Global Sikhs Strategic Plan ver0.6. The document covers the following areas: Background Information Top 7 Challenges SWOT Analysis Programs/Projects Prioritization Vision, Strategy, Execution & Measurement Organization Structure Key Partners Enablement Plans Upon completion of this Strategic Plan, the pro-tem committee further

engaged the SMEs for a period of 2 months to develop a Program Plan for the identified Programs. The Program Plan is still currently being reviewed and fine tuned. It will be shared at a later stage.

7.2 Vision Statement

The vision Global Sikhs is seen as Enabling “Sarbat Da Bhala” or Enabling Service to All - which is an extension of the parent body’s vision of “Sarbat-Da-Bhala.” Do note: Though the Strategic Plan has captured multiple Programs, not all Programs will be launched simultaneously. Also, the prioritization and final list of programs to be launched will be refined upon the completion of the Program Plans and Pilot Phase.

7.3 The approach would be:

Complete Program Plan ► Volunteer Induction Program ► Roll-out Pilot Projects based on Program Plan ► Review Effectiveness of Program Plan based on Pilot Roll-out & Fine Tune the Plan ►Official Launch of Program.

Based on the outcome of the Program Plan and Pilot Projects, the official launch dates of the Program will be identified. Plans are only as good as their execution. The success of these proposed programs are contingent on a few factors: 1. There is logistical support from a fully functioning resource centre. 2. Community participation via a sufficient pool of volunteers. 3. Support of Sabha 4. Successful partnerships with like minded NGO's

25

5. Sustainable sources of funding 6. Dynamic leadership at the helm of GlobalSikhs, and commitment of program

leaders & volunteers. 7.4 Interim Programme

In the interim, please refer to the summary of activities being carried out by the respective programs.

7.4.1 Guru Nanak langger (GNL)

The aim of this program is to reach out to the poor & needy irrespective of race, creed or colour. The soft launch of this program began in Sabha house on 5th May with the modest target of having Langger available to visitors & sewadars at Sabha House. The GNL volunteers have asked the Sabha Committee to improve basic amenities for the GNL project such as a hot & cold water dispenser, and a food warmer with 4 bowls. We are looking to improve our current pool of 5 volunteers to a minimum threshold of 15 to 20 volunteers who will be trained in marketing, cleaning, cooking serving & distribution of Langger to the needy. We plan to commence distribution of langger to the needy around KL city via our volunteers as soon as possible based on our resource capabilities. For distribution to the needy around KL city the plan is to do one evening per week using own transport or Sabha vans depending on their availability.

7.4.2 Senior Citizen Program Its main objective is to make use of the untapped resources of our senior citizens, which while is hugely available, has not been put to good use. We aim to make each and every senior citizen feel special, in their own rights, whether it is to provide help, or to receive help. At this moment, we have 3 programs in the pipeline. 1. Buddy System - a senior citizen is assigned to a buddy in need –e.g. the

bed ridden, sickly 2. Power of Prayer- a group of senior citizens conduct prayers with people

in need 3. Let Me Help - a senior citizen conducts classes to share his know-

how/expertise The pilot projects have started in the Klang valley with our first pilot being a Punjabi class being conducted by a senior citizen, a program under Let Me Help.A group of 10 people have been meeting up to do a pilot of the Buddy System and we hope to roll it out latest in 2Hy12.

7.4.3 Disaster Relief Program Our past experiences in humanitarian relief have included serving in Disaster hit areas during the Aceh sea quake & tsunami (2004), Pakistan earthquake (2005), Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar (2008), Floods across W. Malaysian states from Kedah to Johor, and most recently the nation wide floods in Thailand (2011). SNSM-GlobalSikhs is today recognised by the Bahagian Keselamatan Negara (BKN) as an NGO partner involved in disaster relief, and is called upon to attend briefings from time to time. Based on the Strategic Plan of Action, the task force recommended that SNSM-GS should continue to build on its experience in humanitarian disaster relief, as part of the wider community outreach. The main thrust of this program being: to establish a corps of volunteers who will be well trained and

26

equipped to respond to emergencies arising from accidents or natural occurrences. In the near term the SNSM-GS Disaster Relief program will select suitable candidates to form a core team of administrators, who will then begin the process to re-establish contacts with previous volunteers, recruit new volunteers and identify training modules & trainers. The core service areas of Medical, Logistical support, and provision of Food have been recognised as our key skill sets. The goal is to have a large pool of qualified medical personnel to call upon in an emergency and supported by other individuals with ground experience in logistics and management. The long term goal of the program is to develop expertise and build the capacity to provide full fledged camp management services comprising of Medicine, Food, Shelter and Water & Sanitation. This effort is to be backed up by a well-trained team of technical personnel, support crews in cooking, logistics, para-medicine, etc. To ensure the sustainability of this sizable undertaking, we envision working in strategic partnership with organisations in their respective Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts.

7.4.4 Counselling Program The Global Sikhs counselling body has only recently been formed. The counselling program is a support function for all other programs. Its objective is to study, understand and support the needs of the various groups of people who are running the various activities, as well as the recipients of these programs. This objective is to be met by conducting a needs analysis at the onset of a case received and to direct the case to the right group for support. It is also to look into other channels of help where appropriate assistance can be provided. To jumpstart this program, we are in the process of identifying the right counsellors. At the moment the counsellors we have are Dharamjot Kaur Khalsa, Manjeet Kaur Harnam Singh, Urmila Singh and Dr Harsharan Kaur. We are also in the process of planning the type of courses that can be conducted to teach and train the volunteer group on the types of counselling methods available and how to counsel. Most of the people who have signed up as volunteers for this program are not trained counsellors. Two other programs have also been earmarked for launch in the near term. They are the Guru Angad Education Centre and the Entrepreneur Development Program.

Over 350 mums attended the party which began with them receiving a special welcome at the entrance. Once seated, the mums were treated to performances by the Malaysian Apna Punjab group who charmed the mums with their specially choreographed moves. SNSM PENANG 16.4 SNSM PENANG BRANCH REPORT (April 2011- April2012)

16.4.1 3 E CAMP: Enlightening, Enriching andEmpowering Programme. After much deliberation SNSM PG together with the naujawan members of the Police Gurdwara came up with a novel approach in organizing a 1 day Samelan / camp, one that was hip and attractive to youths and Sikh children. It is more like a 1 day Samelan that has been tweaked and rebranded as a 3 E Camp targeting youths who are 16 years and below (6 – 16 years old). The name 3 E was chosen to represent / depict the following:-

37

a) 3 E means 3 times - We will endeavor to organize the camp for 3 times in a

year so as to ensure that there is continuity of planned programmes to act as follow ups to our Annual Samelan and Mini Samelan. This allows us to touch base with our youths to reiterate preceding learning experiences and put forth new issues and topics while strengthening our bonds with each other.

b) Ideologically it also meant that 1 key topic affecting youth will be picked through

collective opinion after which appropriate training and learning activities will be planned. We shall endeavor to ENLIGHTEN them about the chosen topic by drawing upon Sikh concepts / doctrines, and incorporate current issues and developments around the world so as to ENRICH their learning experiences and finally by doing so we hope Sikh youths will be EMPOWERED through the total experience.

The camp features, IPS, Learning Module, Interactive Media Sessions (Video clips and discussion) and Workshops. Local jatha’s are often invited to lead in IPS sessions. Veerji Kamay, Giani Surinder, Veerji Tirlochan and Veerji Sarjit Singh Rawang (Sanjay) are amongst those who have been invited so far.

FIRST 3 E CAMP 2011 Date : 14th May 2011 (Saturday) Venue : Police Gurdwara Time : 8.00am – 4.30pm Topic : Facebook (Pro’s and Con’s) SECOND 3 E CAMP 2011 Date : 14th July 2011 (Thursday) Venue : Police Gurdwara Time : 8.00am – 4.30pm Topic : Faith THIRD 3 E CAMP 2011 Date : 23rd October 2011 (Sunday) Venue : Wadda Gurdwara Time : 8.00am – 4.30pm Topic : Power of Sadhsanggat FIRST 3 E CAMP 2012 Date : 1st April 2012 (Sunday) Venue : Butterworth Gurdwara Time : 8.00am – 4.30pm Topic : Attitude 16.4.2 KANGAR 1 DAY SAMELAN 2011 SNSM Penang and SNSM Kedah forged alliances to reach out to our brothers and sisters in the north most part of Malaysia, Kangar. The Samelan started at 8am with Kirtan session followed by arambakh ardass and ended with an IPS session and semapti ardass at 9.30pm. On the whole it was a fun-filled day with loads of learning opportunities from learning modules, kirten sessions, group dynamics, heart to heart as well as parents’ session. We had approximately 50 participants (20 Mighty Khalsa and 30 Miri Piri). The main topic of discussion was the 5 evils (Vices) Kaam, Krodh, Lobh Moh, Hangkaar). About 15 Sewadars were sent Penang to facilitate the Kangar samelan. 16.4.3 YOUTH SAMPURAN SEHAJ PATH 2011

38

With grace of almighty and after a successful attempt in getting youths to participate in the very first youth Akand Path held in 2010, SNSM with the support of Police Gurdwara organized the Youth SampuranSehajPath 2011 from 2nd June 2011 till 5th June 2012. Approximately 15 youths participated in doing the Akandh Path and many others supported in Degh sewa, Langgar sewa and so on. Youths took 1 hour turns(ROL) each and those who were more experienced took 2 hours turns (ROL). It has received very good support of the local sanggat and it has been very encouraging on the whole. Veerji Kamay and Jatha were invited to do kirten after the completion of the Akandh Path. Many youths who are capable of doing path are often denied the opportunity to part take in the Akandh Path on the premise that their speed is slow and they have no experience. We hope that this is will become a platform for youths to gain the experience of doing Akandh Path and also for the sanggat to see for themselves that youths are indeed capable of doing so and should be given a chance. We also hope that this will encourage more children to complete their path and participate in such Akandh Path programmes in the future. 16.4.4 SHABAD JAAP SESSION 2011

To cater to many younger children as well as those who felt that they were left out in the Youth Akandh Path programme as they were not capable of doing babe da path, we organized a Shabad Jaap session on the 29th January 2011 from 7.00am – 7.00pm. Three member teams took 30 minutes turn in reciting the chosen shabad. The teams were led by a senior youth member and two other younger members when reciting the shabad. The chosen shabad was: DhanaSriMahala 4 IchaPurakhSarabSukh Data HarJaa Kai Vas Jai KamDaynaa. So AisaaHarDhiaye Mere Jiee-arhayTaaSarabSukhPavai Mere Manaa.(1) The whole Shabad was recited continuously.

16.4.5 NORTHERN REGION TEENS CAMP 2011 For the first time in 9 years the SNSM PG once again resurrected one of its signature programme which was then knowned as the Penang Hill Youth Camp. The camp was organized from 16th till 18th September 2011. The camp is targeted to draw youths (14 years and above) from around the northern region. About 60 youths and sewadars took part in the Teens Camp. The objective of the camp was to bring youths from the Northern region together and converge on a different location (for a camp like feel) to carry out various activities and discussions relevant to youths of today by drawing upon Sikhi imperatives. It follows the format of the fellowship camp. The three key topics presented in this camp were Change, Taking Charge (Leadership) and Integrity. All discussions, group dynamic activities and kirten sessions were aligned to these topics on a daily basis. The camp was organized up on the serene and beautiful Maxwell Hill of Taiping. The camp was supported by sewadars from Taiping who had to prepare langgar in the Gurdwara and have it transported to the top. They also helped in making all the logistic arrangements. VerjiKamay, VeerjiSukhdarshen(SP)andVeerjiAjitpal from Klang were all invited to be part of the thrill.

16.4.6 ATAM RASS KIRTEN DARBAAR 2011 For the first time with the grace of guruji, SNSM PG organized an AtamRassKirtenDarbar. The event was held at the Police Gurdwara on the 24th September 2011 from 4.00pm to 9.00pm. Prominentlocal kirtanjathe’s invited were, VeerjiGurmukh, VeerjiTirlochan Singh and VeerjiKamay. The programme started with a short prelude toRaag narrated and explained by VeerjiGurmukhand sung by his children. It was then followed by kirten by all three jathe’s who sang together in an Atam Rass format that has caught on with the sanggat in recent years. On the whole it was a blissful experience with the sanggat singing in one voice together. 16.4.7 NEW YEARS EVE KIRTAN DARBAR 31ST DECEMBER 2011 As with every year, the SNSM PG in collaboration with the Wadda Gurdwara Sahib

Pg organized the New Year’s Eve kirtan darbar to seek guruji’s blessing in ushering

39

the new year 2012. As always, local jathe’s took turns to do kirten with the final ardass done at 12.00am sharp.

16.4.8 JAPJI SAHIB JAAP (Continuous Recitation of Japji Sahib) This time, based on the collective opinion of all members, we decided to organize a

one night special programme of continuously reciting Japji Sahib. The session which was organized in the Police Gurdwara started at 7.00pm and ended at 7.00am between the 6th and 7th of January 2012. Once again many youths came together and took turns of 30 minutes in groups of three.

16.4.9 21ST PENANG MINI SAMELAN 2012 The long Chinese New Year break was certainly a call out for the SNSM (Pg

Branch) to organize our Penang Mini Samelan. The samelan was held from the 21st -23rdof January 2012. This time around the samelan was organized in the Butterworh Gurdwara following calls made from the members to rotate samelan venues within Penang so as to give every Gurdwara and the local sanggat an experience to be a part of the samelan. The theme of the Samelan was: Darshen Deykh Jiwa Gur Tera, Puran Karam Hoay Prabh Mera. From insightful indoor lessons to fun activities that even included aerobics, to inspiring kirtan session, all the sessions had participants yearning for more. The cheerful faces clearly paint a picture of happiness and bliss.

16.4.10 PENANG VASAKHI OPEN HOUSE 2012 Instead of organizing the event all by ourselves (as in the previous years), this time

around the SNSM PG decided to organize the 10th Vasakhi Open House in collaboration with the Penang Sikh Association (PSA) so as to pull our resources together in organizing the event for the benefit of Penangites and tourists alike. The event was organized on the 21st of April from 6.00pm till 11.00pm at the Penang Times Square.

The Chief Minister of Penang and dignitaries consisting of Members of Parliament, state executive councilors and Gurdwara Representatives were invited to grace in the event. We were delighted to see a turnout of about 3000 people ranging from locals from all over the Island to foreign tourist, who came to enjoy the lively Open House. The event showcased various performances including bhangra, giddha, multicultural and modern bollywood dance numbers. There were also mehendi art services and exhibition section showcasing exhibits of early arrivals of Sikhs in Malaysia.
