‘SNORING CAN KILL’-What is Snoring?

• Snoring is vibration of respiratory structure and resulting sound due to obstructed air moving during breathing while sleeping.

• In some case sound may be soft but in other cases it can be “Loud” and “Unpleasant”.“Snoring during sleep may be a sign or first alarm, of Obstructive Sleep Apnea(OSA)”.

Causes of Snoring

• The irregular airflow is caused by a passageway blockage & is usually due to one of the following:

• Throat weakness, causing the throat to close during sleep.• Mispositioned Jaws, often caused by tension in the

muscles.• Fat gathering in & around throat.• Obstruction in the nasal passageway.• The tissue at the top of airways touching each other,

causing vibrations.• Relaxants such as, alcohol or drugs relaxing throat

Example 1: Pilot was snoring before Air India Crash. ‘Disoriented ‘ Pilot to blame for Mangalore Plane crash that killed 158 peoples..says investigators.The Pilot of Air India Plane that crashed in May 2010, killing 158 peoples, slept through more than half the flight. Could be heard snoring heavily on the cockpit voice recorder shortly before the incident.

• Data form Wisconsin sleep Cohort Study founded that 44% of all men surveyed and 28% of all women surveyed were habitual snorers.
