First Annual Ivy League-Seven Sisters Trivia Contest. By 1966, trivia bowls had spread to college campuses nation-wide.

THE FIRSTCOLLEGE BOWL

Before universities took on the spon-sorship of trivia bowls, American com-panies like Good Housekeeping maga-zine and General Electric backed trivia contests for students. Good House-keeping sponsored a trivia bowl on the radio, referred to as “the varsity sport of the mind,” from 1953 to 1955. In January 1959, the most well-known of all college bowls was launched with GE as its sponsor.

The GE College Bowl became a hit net-work television show, originally hosted by Allen Ludden and later Robert Earle. It ran about 25 to 40 weeks each year on Saturdays and Sundays for 17 sea-sons, until June 1970. During its run, the College Bowl won numerous ac-colades from presidents to Congress to the PTA and received a slew of awards, including an Emmy and the Peabody Award for outstanding achievement in entertainment and education.

In today’s world of college bowls, the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point boasts the world’s largest trivia contest. The contest, which has run for 38 years, is open to anyone and played in April each year. It spans 54 hours throughout a weekend with eight ques-tions every hour. There are 500 teams with one to 50 players, and the top 10 are awarded trophies.

TRIVIAL PURSUITTRIVIA

The word “trivia” is the plural form of “trivium,” a Latin noun taken from “triple” and “via.” In short, trivia is re-ferred to as knowledge that is good to have but nonessential – mainly it’s ma-terial for answering quiz questions.

But trivia became essential with the arrival of the board game, Trivial Pur-

suit.

On Dec. 15, 1979, a photo journalist for the “Montreal Gazette,” Chris Haney, and a sports journalist for “The Cana-dian Press,” Scott Abbott, were playing a game of Scrabble when they decided to invent their own game. Two years later, their invention was trademark registered and eventually released as Trivial Pursuit.

The fi rst copies of Trivial Pursuit sold at a loss. Manufacturing costs for the cop-ies were $75 each game; retailers sold it for $15. Then, in 1983, Selchow and Righter, a U.S. game manufacturer and distributor, bought the rights to Trivial Pursuit; and, after an all-out public relations campaign, the game became “the biggest phenomenon in game his-tory,” according to Time magazine.

In December 1993, Games Magazine named Trivial Pursuit to the “Games Hall of Fame.”

As time went on, Trivial Pursuit came out with pop-culture games like the Beatles Trivia Pursuit and Seinfeld Trivia Pursuit. As technology crept in, Trivial Pursuit kept up, with Trivial Pursuit games for computer and video, cell phones, the Wii and the iPod. Have you ever been to a bar and played the video version of Trivial Pursuit while sipping a beer?

Regardless of the variety, the basics re-main the same. In 2008, Parker Broth-ers released Trivial Pursuit: the Best of Genus. The edition is a collection of “best” questions in all of the categories from the past 25 years, from people and places to sports and leisure to sci-ence and nature.

Some of the all-time, best-loved Trivial Pursuit questions can be silly, funny or a bit personal.

T.V. TRIVIA GAMESThe popularity of the board game gave birth to trivia-related television shows like “Jeopardy” and “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” And for the younger set (or adults shot down by Jeopardy), there is “Are you Smarter than a Fifth Grader?”

Most of the trivial pursuits-of-the-same-name-television game shows were short-lived.

The Family Channel’s “Trivial Pursuit” game show aired from 1993 to 1995, with announcers Wink Martindale and Randy West.

Running only one season was Trivial Pursuit: America Plays. The game show premiered in September 2008 but wasn’t renewed, even though it was based on an interactive format, where the public sent in questions with a po-tential to win money at home.

THE TRIVIA GURUThere’s always the smarty pants in the crowd.

Wilson Casey is known as “The Trivia Guy.” He is an American columnist, author and entertainer and holds two Guinness World Book of Records for a 30-hour live, continuous broadcast on radio station WKDY-AM that took place Jan. 9 and Jan. 10, 1999, in Spar-tanburg, SC. During the 30-hour trivia marathon, he asked and correctly iden-tifi ed 3,333 questions.

FAMOUS TRIVIAL PURSUITS

There’s trivia games for foodies, sci-ence geeks and sports enthusiasts,

among others. Who can talk trivia without mentioning need-to-know facts about Super Bowl?

Did you know …?

• No NFL team has ever played the Su-per Bowl on its own home fi eld.

• No Super Bowl game has ever gone into overtime play.

• Super Bowl Sunday is second only to Thanksgiving as the day Americans consume the largest amount of food.

• The fi rst Super Bowl was played in 1967. The Green Bay Packers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 35-to-10.

In my line of work, I have heard many people say they lack focus and are not really sure where their

lives are going. They also usually say that they do not know their purpose and lack passion. I have found that many people do not even know what passion is. They do not know how to recognize it in order to allow it to be a driving force in life. Many people lack passion, for dif-ferent reasons. For some, it is out of continued obligations to others, per-ceptions of self-worth, anger, and fear are common reasons. If a person con-sistently meets other people’s obliga-tions while ignoring his or her own wants and needs, it will deplete energy and one needs energy to feed passion and vice versa.

If a person carries a perception of low self-worth, it many times masquer-ades as something else. Constantly taking care of other people in the sense of running around to meet other people’s wants while neglecting one’s own needs is an example. It can also masquerade as always staying busy and never having time to slow down to enjoy life. Many people have be-come experts at covering up the real issue. It can be covered up to the point of the person forgetting it was ever there, such as anger and fear. Pretend-ing takes up a lot of energy and one needs energy to feel passion.

What is passion? How is it different than mental excitement? Passion is an energy in the body that can be felt

emotionally, mentally, and physically. When one has an abundance of passion for life, he or she has an abundance of energy. A person who carries much passion is often energetic, perhaps a bit loud, likes trying new things, and is usually driven. That does not mean the person walks around smiling all the time or yelling all the time, it just means the person’s passion is appar-ent. When one has passion for life, making life choices is easier because that person usually does become caught up in fear of survival (what if it is the ‘wrong’ choice?). Mental ex-citement comes and goes, it does not sustain and it does not feed into the emotions; it stays mental. How does one fi nd passion?

If you are one who desires passion, fi nd one thing you are passionate about. Bring that into your life and honor it, be passionate about it, what-ever it is! Allow yourself to feel the energy of passion and then spread it to other areas of life. If you do not know what you are passionate about, try some activities to fi nd something. Perhaps remember what you became excited about as a child? One could seek out a Tai Yi treatment to assist in uncovering passion as well. The TLCA is featuring two distinct art exhibitions during our January 4 - 29 “Showcase

of Astounding Front Range Artists.” In addition to featuring some dynamite, fun artists in the main gallery, we are hosting a show in the Lucy Owens Gallery that is powerful and provocative. When I assumed the role of Interim Executive Director, I felt that on occasion, we should utilize our facility to focus on relevant social issues.

I am ecstatic that we have landed Nanci Ricks, am amazing photographer, who uses her talents to draw attention to human traffi cking and slavery. Her startling, spirit-grabbing photo documentary, consisting of 18 photographs with explanations, will be installed this Sunday. The article

below shows a photo of Nanci, along with her bio. Nanci has addressed the U.S. Congress on the issue of human traffi cking, and she has appeared on national television programs.

The free opening reception is on Friday, January 7th, from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. Nanci Ricks will be signing her book, To Love the Slumdog: My Journey Serving the Untouchables - the Dalit, during that time. We will provide hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. Guitar virtuoso Wayne Hammerstadt will be performing classical compositions.

Nanci Ricks will be signing her book, “To Love the Slumdog: My Journey Serving the

Untouchables - the Dalit,” on Friday, January 7th, 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Tri-Lakes Center for the Arts in Palmer Lake.

In 2001, Nanci co-founded and directed the Dalit Freedom Network (DFN), a nonprofi t organization dedicated to the emancipation of India’s Dalit. She brings you along on her journeys to India through her engaging photographs and descriptive stories. You can see her photographs and read her stories, but most importantly you will be drawn into her heart for the nation of India. Nanci has passionately communicated about the plight of the Dalits to countless audiences. She has testifi ed before the US Congress as well as presented to large and small Indian and American audiences, interest groups, universities, and churches.

• On Jan. 9, 1768, Englishman Philip Astley stages the fi rst modern circus in London. Astley, a former cavalry sergeant major, found that if he galloped in a tight circle, centrifugal force allowed him to perform seemingly impossible feats on a horse’s back. He invited the public to see him wave his sword in the air while he rode with one foot on the saddle and one on the horse’s head.

• On Jan. 6, 1838, Samuel Morse’s tele-graph system is demonstrated for the fi rst time at the Speedwell Iron Works in Mor-ristown, N.J. The telegraph eventually would revolutionize long-distance commu-nication, reaching the height of its popular-ity in the 1920s and 1930s.

• On Jan. 5, 1933, construction begins on the Golden Gate Bridge, as workers started excavating 3.25 million cubic feet of dirt for the structure’s huge anchorages. The Golden Gate Bridge offi cially opened on May 27, 1937. At 3,000 feet, it was the lon-gest bridge span in the world at the time.

• On Jan. 7, 1927, the Harlem Globetrot-ters basketball team, formerly known as the Savoy Big Five, travels 48 miles west from Chicago to play its fi rst game, in Hinckley, Ill. The Globetrotters won 101 out of 117 games that fi rst season.

• On Jan. 8, 1946, Elvis Presley receives a $6.95 guitar from the Tupelo Hardware Co. store for his 11th birthday. It’s said that what Elvis really wanted for his birthday that year was a rifl e or a bicycle.

• On Jan. 4, 1974, President Richard Nix-on refuses to hand over tape recordings and documents that had been subpoenaed by the Senate Watergate Committee. Marking the beginning of the end of his presidency, Nixon would resign from offi ce in disgrace eight months later.

• On Jan. 3, 1990, Panama’s General Manuel Antonio Noriega, after holing up for 10 days at the Vatican embassy in Panama City, surrenders to U.S. military troops to face charges of drug traffi cking. In 1992, the former dictator was convicted of drug traffi cking, money laundering and racketeering and sentenced to 40 years in prison.

Wake up, it’s 2011. It’s a time for renewal; a time for change. And if the holidays

led to several family dinners complete with large portions of meat, potatoes, and pies, then the healthy diet of your past has gone away. If you’ve ignored your friends, choosing to spend your holidays with blood-related humans, then you may be at a loss in your social life. Not to mention, your stress level may have reached its max over the last month, and your brain is fried.

So, it’s time to fi x these problems, with the all-so-traditional “New Years Reso-lution”. What will you choose? Join a Gym – it’s pricey. Throw a party – no one will come. Buy a massage chair – you’ll fall asleep in it, causing you to miss a meeting, therefore causing even more stress. I know what you’re think-ing, your world has ended and there’s nothing you can do. Wrong. Fortu-nately, the best solution by resolution, to end your life of attitude-pollution,

is bowling. It’s the answer to all your problems.

I’ll have to admit, she looks good for 73. I’m talking about Jane Fonda. She has two new exercise videos

out, and they’re aimed at seniors.

The fi rst one is “Jane Fonda’s Prime Time: Fit and Strong.” It has two dif-ferent workouts, both 25 minutes long. The exercises are low impact, are done standing up and seem very simple to do.

The second video, “Jane Fonda’s Prime Time: Walkout,” also has two levels. Both programs have you walk-ing a mile, right in the comfort of your home.

Fonda has done her homework, I’ll give her that. She knows certain facts: Exercise cuts the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease and fractures. And she’s right when she says that ex-

And guys: From what I’ve seen of the videos, they would be good for you, too.

If you don’t like Fonda, you still can benefi t from exercise videos you use at home. Whether it’s because there’s no senior workout class near you, or because the weather is too atrocious, it’s really not necessary to go out to get exercise.

Look for a video called “Exercise: A Video From the National Institute on Aging.” All the exercises are done seated or standing, and use little hand

weights.

Also look for another video titled “Older and Much Wiser Workout.” It’s low impact for beginners, and it’s bro-ken into sections so you can vary your workout.

STATINS AREN’T ONLY WAY TO LOWERCHOLESTEROL

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My doctor pre-scribed statin drugs to control my LDL cholesterol. First I took lovastatin (Meva-cor) and then simvastatin (Zocor), but I had muscle pain and weakness with them. I am reluctant to start the pravastatin (Pra-vachol) that he now has prescribed. Are there alternatives? How about Endur-acin? CoQ10 has been suggested. -- D.L.

ANSWER: Statins are the most potent cholesterol-lowering drugs, including low-ering LDL cholesterol -- bad cholesterol, the kind that clings to artery walls. They’ve been around for 20 years, and their safety record has been good. Some people de-velop muscle pain. Those people can try a different statin. You did. However, you might be reacting a bit too fast in rejecting pravastatin (Pravachol). It is the statin that most infrequently is involved with muscle complaints.I don’t know any herb on the list of herbs you included (in an edited part of the let-ter) that compare with medicines for cho-lesterol control. However, there are things you can do to lower cholesterol, including reducing your saturated fat and cholesterol intake. Saturated fats are the fats found in many meats, whole-fat dairy products and many other commercially prepared foods. You have to look on the label. Omega-3 fatty acids lower cholesterol. They’re found in fi sh. If you cannot stand fi sh, take the omega-3s in pill form.Questran, Colestid, Welchol and Zetia are cholesterol-lowering drugs that are unre-lated to statins.Niacin can increase HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) and lower triglycerides, fats that also fi gure into artery clogging. Endur-

acin is a slow-release preparation of niacin. Slow-release preparations were introduced to lessen fl ushing, one of the side effects of niacin.Coenzyme Q10, or CoQ10, is an antioxi-dant made by the body and also is available in pill form. Antioxidants counter the dam-aging byproducts coming from cell chem-istry. I don’t see any references mentioning that it lowers cholesterol.

cus -- the navel, the bellybutton. With age, the scar that closes the umbilicus (the site where the umbilical cord from the placenta attaches to the fetus) weakens, and a hernia can form.If the hernia isn’t large, isn’t bothering you and doesn’t put a crimp in your lifestyle, nothing has to be done.When you work out, does the hernia bulge larger? If it does, you should limit the amount of weight you lift. If it doesn’t, then you can continue as you are, so long

as your doctor concurs.

BRAISED CHICKEN WITH TOMATOES

AND PEPPERS

2 tablespoons olive or canola oil 1 cut-up whole chicken (3 to 3 1/2 pounds), skin removed 1/4 teaspoon coarse (kosher or sea) salt 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 medium onion, cut into thin wedges 2 cloves garlic, fi nely chopped 1 medium yellow or green bell pep-per, cut into bite-size strips 2 medium jalape–o chilies, seeded, fi nely chopped, divided 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilan-tro 2 teaspoons mild or hot chili pow-der 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 2 cans (14.5 oz each) Muir Glen Or-ganic Fire Roasted diced tomatoes, undrained 1/2 cup chicken broth Hot cooked rice or couscous, if de-siredLime wedges, if desired

1. In deep 12-inch skillet or 5-quart Dutch oven, heat oil over medium-high heat. Sprinkle chicken with salt and pepper. Add chicken pieces to skillet; cook 5 to 6 minutes, turn-

ing occasionally, until chicken is light golden brown. Remove chick-en from skillet; set aside. 2. In same skillet, add onion, garlic, bell pepper and 1 chopped chili, 1 tablespoon of the cilantro, the chili powder and the cumin. Cook 3 to 5 minutes, stirring constantly, un-til vegetables are crisp-tender. Stir in the tomatoes and the broth, until well mixed. 3. Return chicken to skillet; spoon sauce over chicken. Heat to boil-ing. Reduce heat; cover and simmer 20 to 25 minutes, turning chicken once, until juice of chicken is clear when thickest piece is cut to bone (170 F for breasts; 180 F for thighs and drumsticks). 4. Serve in shallow bowls over rice; sprinkle with remaining cilantro and jalapeno pepper. Serve with

lime wedges. Makes 4 servings.

If you’ve just had a new baby, your life is fi lled with more joy (but less sleep). You’re probably already

aware of the time and effort you must invest in raising your child, but you may not have thought as much about another aspect — the fi nancial one.

Consider this: The average cost of raising a child to age 17 is now $222,360, according to a U.S. De-partment of Agriculture report on how much middle-income, two-par-ent families spend on their offspring. And this is the amount you might spend before your son or daughter heads to college. Clearly, you need to start making the fi nancial moves necessary to take your child from diapers to a degree. Here are some suggestions for doing just that:

Purchase suffi cient life insurance. When it was just you and your spouse, it was a good idea for you to have life insurance — but now that you have a child, it’s an absolute necessity. If you have any doubts about the value of life insurance, just look again at that $222,360 fi gure above, and then tack on the costs of four years of col-lege. If you or your spouse were to die unexpectedly, would the survi-vor earn enough to raise and educate your child? In this day and age, that’s not likely — so make sure you have adequate life insurance in place.

Prepare a will. Obviously, you hope to enjoy a long life — one in which you see your child grow to adulthood. But none of us can predict the future, so it’s essential that you draw up a will to provide for the care of your child, both fi nancially and physically. When you create a will, you can name a guardian to step in and take care of your child, if necessary, and you can

make sure your child receives your fi -nancial assets. However, many people go beyond writing a will and establish a living trust, which gives them more control over how and when they want their assets distributed. Your legal ad-visor can help you prepare a will and determine if a living trust is appropri-ate for your needs.

Maintain adequate cash. To help pay for all those expenses related to child rearing, keep enough cash on hand. By having enough resources available in liquid accounts, you can avoid having to dip into your long-term investments to pay for short-term needs.

Save early and often for college. It’s never too soon to start saving for the high costs of higher education. A 529 plan is a tax-advantaged vehicle and may be a great option for your col-lege savings. Contributions to a 529 plan are made with after-tax dollars, and have the opportunity to grow tax-free. Withdrawals used for qualifi ed higher education expenses are also tax free. Furthermore, your 529 plan contributions may be eligible for a state tax deduction or credit depend-ing on the plan and state.

Stay balanced. As we’ve seen, it takes a lot of money to raise a child. But even as you’re meeting these ex-penses, think about your own future, particularly your retirement. Strive to strike a balance between the mon-ey you spend on your child and the amount you invest in your 401(k), IRA and other retirement-savings ve-hicles.

You can’t put a price-tag on your child’s future, but when it comes to taking care of that child, you’ll want to know the costs involved — and be prepared for them.

PREPAID CARDS: LOAD AT YOUR OWN RISK

The government did us a favor when it cre-ated the CARD Act, which reined in banks and credit-card companies that had been

collecting millions of extra dollars from consum-ers.

Thanks to the Card ACT, we gained 21 days to make a payment, 45 days notifi cation of serious changes in terms, the little box on the statements that shows how long it will take to pay off the debt

if we only pay the minimum, and more.

Now a new industry has sprung up, devising new ways to separate us from our dollars: the prepaid card, also called the “reloadable” card.

Consumers are invited to use the prepaid cards as they would a bank: deposit a paycheck, have bills automatically paid out of the balance, buy gro-ceries. The cards can be purchased and reloaded nearly anywhere, including convenience stores and big-box stores.

Prepaid cards are becoming big business as more and more people opt out of having regular check-ing and savings accounts. Some lack good credit; many don’t want to incur credit-card interest; while others simply want the convenience of not carrying cash.

The prepaid cards, however, don’t come with the same protections as credit cards: Those CARD Act laws don’t cover prepaid cards, especially when it comes to fees. If you put, say, $100 on a prepaid card, you’d think you’d have that whole $100 of your own money to spend.Not so.

Prepaid cards can come with: purchase fees, activa-tion fees, minimum deposit fees, card-replacement fees, withdrawal fees, ATM inquiry fees, cancel-lation fees, monthly fees, reload fees, annual fees, PIN fees and even fees to talk to customer service. Prepaid cards generally put a temporary lock on your funds when used at a gas station or for hotels, denying you access to your own money.

Some of the prepaid cards even include a line of credit or overdraft protection. If you don’t keep careful track of the associated fees, you can spend more than you expect and incur debt. There’s also no credit reporting with prepaid cards, which means they can’t be used to build up a credit history.

Instead of paying fees to use your own money, open a bank account and use the debit card that comes with it.

In a Colorado divorce, marital property will be equitably divided between the spouses. The spouses’ separate property, if any, will

be set aside to each spouse. What is “separate property”?

Separate property is property that was acquired prior to the marriage or property that was ac-quired during the marriage such as an inheri-tance and certain other gifts. For example, if you saved money prior to the marriage or a parent left you money in their will during the marriage, such funds are your separate property, assuming that you have not commingled such funds with marital property.

The Court has no power to divide or distribute separate property. However, the Court does not operate in a vacuum and can take separate prop-erty into consideration when making fi nancial decisions regarding the division and distribution of marital property and the amount and duration of maintenance (alimony).

You may now be thinking that you can rest easy and not worry about your separate property. How-

ever, any increase, such as appreciation, of your separate property during the marriage is marital property and will be divided by the Court! Folks who have been married for a long time and who have separate property investments are probably going to have a lot of marital property resulting from the increase in the value of their separate property investments during the marriage. For example, the little vacation home in Aspen you purchased thirty years ago before your marriage is going to have a huge marital property compo-nent due to the amount it has appreciated during the marriage.

Similarly, if you are fortunate enough to be the benefi ciary (remainderman) of a trust that is no longer revocable (for example, the person who created the trust has died), you may discover that your separate property interest in the trust may have a signifi cant component of marital prop-erty even though you have never received a dime from the trust! The analysis of property inter-ests in trusts is too complicated for an article like this and may require the services of an expert accountant to fi gure out.

Separate property issues in divorce can be very simple or extremely complex depending on the

facts of any given case. If you are contemplating getting a divorce, you need to understand the dif-ferences between separate and marital property, and don’t forget that separate property can create marital property.

You should remember that divorce property law is like any other law: you may not understand it; you may not like it; and you may not think its fair; but it’s the law!
