What’s happening in Sneem Resource Centre
Hello Sneem Community! This is Deneen Curran Waddell again. I will be arriving in Sneem August 14 -18th, staying at the Green House. Thanks to the posting in the May Sneem newsletter of my request to locate any relatives, I found my cousins!! Thank you!! A great way of uniting Sneem relatives. I plan on vis-iting my dad’’s f irst cousin, John Crowley as well as home-steads, churches and cemeteries where my relatives are buried. I am told that the Sneem locals are very helpful so I will be asking around town if anyone knows anything about the, “old Curran family”. My grandfather was Patrick Cur-
ran, 1891-1974, who went to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA when he was 21. Patrick was one of five siblings including, Abby, Molly, Denis, and Hannah. All baptised in Sneem. It was suggested to go visit a Mrs. Burns....she grew up and lived next door to Curran Family. I’ll ask about this, also Hillary O’Sullivan, local historian. Maybe they or another local, may know why my grandfather Patrick lef t Sneem. There was a story told when we were kids that Patrick was kicked out of Ireland for brawling. Hmm...we have old letters f rom his siblings thanking Patrick for sending money. So we think possibly he left in order to help his siblings f inancially. No one knows for sure. I feel a very strong bond to Sneem especially since my grandparent, great, great great, and great great great grandparents were all born in Sneem!!! I wouldn’t be surprised if I come back and live in Sneem for periods of time. Please feel f ree to come up to me and chat. I will also like to do some sight see-ing around the Ring of Kerry. Thank you very much.

Richard Walsh Memorial Blitz
The Annual Richard Walsh Memorial Blitz was held at Sneem GAA grounds on the 20th
July during the Sneem Summer Festival. Over 50 games were played and over 200 children took part. We had teams f rom Tuosist, Kilgarvan, Kenmare, Templenoe, Sneem/Derrynane, Foilmore, Dromid and Renard taking part. Wonderful football and some outstanding talent was on display. The U12 f inal was between Kenmare and Renard with the Kenmare U12’s coming out on top in a pulsating f inal. The U10 Final was between Dromid and Kil-garvan with the Kilgarvan team holding out for a win over Dromid. The Adrian Riney Player of the Tour-nament went to Jack Sweeney f rom Kenmare Shamrocks (pictured lef t receiving the Adrian Riney Memorial Trophy f rom Karen Riney Burns) and we have no doubt but we will see him in a green and gold jersey in the future. The U10 player of the tour-nament went to the very talented Dara Foley of Kil-garvan. A huge thank you to Yvonne Ryan and the volun-teers who ran the shop and to everyone who baked and helped out in any way. Also a huge thanks to the referees on the day, Ronan and Mike Hussey who did all but one of the U12 games and David Drummond and also to Dylan Sugrue, Ruairí Burns, Damien Fitzgerald and Colm van Assen, this was a big ask of these young lads and they did an excellent job on the day. We would not be able to play these games without referees willing to put themselves in the middle and we owe them gratitude and respect f rom the sidelines. This is one of the most popular annual blitzes and the feedback f rom the clubs was excellent again this year, long may it continue.
Page 11
Well done to St. Michael's Foilmore on winning the John Egan U14 7-a-side blitz in Sneem on Sunday 28th July. Great competition with teams f rom Sneem/Derrynane/Templenoe, St. Marys/Renard, Valentia and Kenmare taking part. St. Michael's Foilmore beat Kenmare in a pulsating f inal. Thanks to our referees Ronan Hussey and Michael O'Sullivan and to David O'Leary on organising the blitz. Eamon Egan presented the Cup on behalf of the Egan family

Bumblebee Identification
Last month, we focused on two of the most common bumblebees found in Sneem - the white-tailed bumblebee (Bombus lucorum) and the common carder bee (Bombus pascuorum). The white-
tailed bumblebee has one yellow band on the thorax and the com-mon carder bee has a f luffy ginger thorax. Once you get familiar with these two bumblebees, you might start seeing some with a white tail but two yellow bands on their thorax. These could be a Heath Bumblebee (Bombus Jonellus) or a Garden Bumblebee (Bombus Hortorum). You can tell them apart by looking at their faces - the garden bumblebee has a long horse-shaped face and the heath bumblebee has a short face. For more information, go onto http://www.biodiversityireland.ie/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/Crash-course-in-bumblebee-
identif ication_2015.pdf. A good place to spot bumblebees is in the pollinator beds in both squares. Our newest bed in the South Square is looking particularly fabulous at the moment, thanks to Tim and Caroline Lea. All the plants used are pollinator f riendly and it’s buzzing with bees right now.
We’re also delighted with our wild-f lower beds that we seeded in the spring at the Digital Hub, they are looking very colourful now. Photos by Tim Lea.
