De Gaulle Commemorations On Friday, 7th June, the French Ambassador, Stephane Crouzat, Senate President Gérard Larcher, and a party of French Gaullist senators, the Am-icale Gaulliste, vis-ited the area, fol-lowing in the foot-steps of their es-teemed former President, General Charles de Gaulle. Their itinerary in-cluded Derrynane House, home of the
Liberator Daniel O’Connell (whose biography was penned by de Gaulle’s maternal grandmother) taking the famed De Gaulle walk on the adjacent strand, visiting the newly -installed archive of photographs of the de Gaulle visit in Sneem Ho-tel, visiting Parknasilla Hotel and Heron Cove where General and Madame de Gaulle stayed for nearly two weeks, and ending at the de Gaulle monument where they were addressed by Dr. Malone and Sonny Looney. Senate President Larcher delivered a speech in his native tongue which was promptly rendered into English by Florent Montcomble, husband of Ruth Malone. M. Larcher then laid a wreath at the monument and presented senate medals to the Sneem speakers after which local schoolchildren entertained the attendance with a skillful display of Irish danc-ing. The group then visited St. Michael’s Church so that they could sit down on a 10th row seat said to have been occupied by the General. They then headed back to Killarney whence they proceeded to Connemara, Dublin and the border. (continued on page 8).

Coffee, Craft and Chat Some of the ladies f rom the Sneem Tuesday Craf t morning took their knitted and crotcheted items to St Joseph’s at Kenmare on Tuesday 21st May. The theme of the project was to make twiddle items for Alzheimer residents to use as they are of ten lost for what to do with their hands. The outcome was the knit-ting of enough twiddle muffs for every Alzheimer resident there plus some twid-dle aprons which double up as somewhere for residents to keep bits and bobs they bring out of their room. Avril Sherbourne also crocheted some beautiful shawls. Pictured below are some of the Sneem Tuesday morning craf t ladies: Kate Jonas, Michele Cooper-Fay, Kathy Jukes, Maureen Connelly, and Mary Hawkes together with staff f rom St Joseph’s. The intention is to now make some bags for the residents to use to carry items to the day room. The feedback f rom the staff later in the day was that the gif ts bought great happiness to the resi-dents. The weekly Coffee, Craf t and Chat Group continues every Tuesday in the Resource Centre f rom 11am to 1pm. Con-tact Michele Cooper-Fay on 085 1708286 or Kathy Jukes on 089 4643345.

Thank you wholeheartedly to all those who so generously supported or con-tributed to the success of our Friend-ship Day which was held on Bank Hol-iday Monday 3rd June this year. The local community are always so sup-portive of our efforts and we had quite a few visitors passing through Sneem by car and coach who dropped in. This year the day coincided with the funeral of our dear f riend Alice, who lived for so many years directly oppo-site to the Church of the Transf igura-tion. We knew that Alice would not have approved at all of us cancelling the event – she loved to sit in her chair and watch the world go by and she always generously donated to this par-ticular event. So we paused in our fes-tivities as she passed by and the bell she loved to hear was rung in her hon-our. The weather was kind - a pleasant change, although the wind did have a go at the marquee the previous day, just for old time’s sake! All the stalls were very busy and there was a lovely atmosphere of f riendship and enjoy-ment. The lunch staff were run off their feet - a good complaint. Much fun was had at the games organised by our Rector Michael , his wife Marjorie and their son Tom – a particularly fun game was Bat the Rat! – they had names, but you’ll have to ask Michael what they were! Our thanks are due to Kit, our Kenmare and Sneem guitarist, who played so delightfully to welcome peo-ple in. It is quite an effort for the small, some-what ageing(!) congregation in Sneem , f rom the advertising, putting up the marquee, and the preparation of the food and stalls. This year too we lost Rosemary Dixon who on previous years organised the amazing cake stall. She is sadly missed. We will also be saying farewell af ter the summer to our stalwart organiser Olive Quinlan, who has done so much hard work for our church. So sadly this may be the last year for this enjoyable event. But, you never know, we may have other ideas up our sleeve: depleted but not defeated. €2,200 was raised for charity and the two churches. Thank you all on behalf of the Little Church, Sneem (new members welcome!)

50th Anniversary of De Gaulle Visit
Page 12
In 1993, our local Tidy Towns Commit-tee decided to set about commemorat-ing the 25th anniversary of General de Gaulle’s visit which was to come around the following year. Our reason-ing was that the General was a distin-guished soldier and statesman, the last great Frenchman, who had served his country proudly, both personifying France and saving his country not once but twice. Furthermore, was he not “one of our own”, descended on his mother’s side f rom the McCartans of Co. Down? And had his stay here not led to Sneem becoming an important tourist destination? And haven’t the French and the Irish always been the best of f riends, that is if you gloss over the heavy involvement of our Irish Catholic soldiers in the Duke of Wel-lington’s army. So, our local commit-tee set about raising funds and gaining inf luence in higher circles. Our late, lamented fellow parishioner Mr. Justice Dermot Kinlen opened many doors for us and introduced us to Dr. Pierre Jo-annon, the honorary Irish Consul in Antibes who was at the time the chair-man of the Ireland Fund of France. Dr. Joannon helped us to obtain a grant f rom the fund to commission a memo-rial to the General. Two resourceful ladies hunted for a large stone and found one outside Kenmare. Local tradesmen gave their services gratis, transporting the stone here and em-bedding it. The monument consisting of a bronze plaque of the General’s head mounted on this large boulder is the work of the expatriate English artist Alan Hall, inscribed with de Gaulle’s famous verdict on his Irish visit. Subse-quently it has on occasions met with an intense emotional response f rom French tourists. Perhaps this little piece of France in a corner of a Kerry village square may have the power to raise the spirits of the homesick traveller!

Potential Jobs in Sneem
As you may have heard, there is the prospect of a number of jobs coming to Sneem, with 2 em-ployers willing to place people here. The key message I want to get across in this article is that these jobs will only come to f ruition if we can show a signif icant number of suitably-qualif ied people already living or willing to live in the Sneem area ..... and the crucial role YOU can play in enabling us to do that. There is a severe shortage of tech skills in the marketplace right now and this provides us with an opportunity.
If you know ANYBODY with strong technical skills living nearby or who might be interested in living in and around Sneem, please have them contact us for an informal chat. We would not be sharing any personal details about the person until such time as they might decide to apply for a job. However, if we can demonstrate that we have X number of people with this skill and Y number of people with that skill interested in living and working in Sneem we put the area in a really strong position. It could be a relation of yours, a f riend, a professional colleague ... anyone who either already has an af f inity to the area or who simply wants a change of lifestyle, a perfect place to bring up their children, less time commuting, the equivalent of a €30K plus pay-rise on the basis of rental or mort-gage savings alone, any indicator whatsoever that they might be interested in living and working here. Alternatively, it could be somebody already living and / or working here but perhaps in a job not utilising their skills etc.
We have a real opportunity here to create a situation of signif icant benef it to our local community and economy and we just need to work together to turn it into reality. So I encourage you to talk to people you think might meet the criteria and connect them to us, perhaps scroll through your phone contacts, your email addresses etc. To paraphrase JFK, our call to action to you today is to "ask not what your community can do for you but what you can do for your community". If every person reading this introduced us to just one person working in tech / IT with any interest in potentially living and working here, we will have set a really strong foundation to bring a new lease of life into the community, more custom for our local businesses, more children now and / or in the future for the creche, schools, GAA teams etc., not to mention a huge injection of disposable income into the community .... and we will have done so together. I urge you to please not think about this as something you might do later .... please pick up the phone or drop an email to that person / those people now ... while it's still f resh in your mind.
Please have them contact us at [email protected] .

Sneem Digital Hub
Up-Skilling / Cross-Skilling Opportunities For Employment Sneem Digital Hub is communicating with CIT and ITT (scheduled to merge to become the Munster Technology University) with a view to providing opportuni-ties to undertake practical-based study programmes in tech / IT areas in which there is high demand and for which high salaries are being paid. While the bulk of these programmes are for folks who are tech-orientated, demand also exists for technical writers where a high prof iciency in writing in English is the primary prerequisite, so you don't need to be a coding wizard to ultimately gain employ-ment and a decent wage while living and working in the Sneem area.
We plan to have Donna O' Shea f rom CIT visit us one Saturday over the Sum-mer to outline the programmes they have, the previous experience / skills re-quired, the types of jobs to which they lead and the types of salary both recent graduates and experienced folks can expect with these qualif ications. Please note that these programmes can typically be undertaken while continuing in your current employment where applicable and can be undertaken online. This means that if you know people who might be interested in returning to live here but who may not quite have the skills right now for the types of jobs suitable for remote working, they can take steps towards achieving that objective. We are looking at areas such as coding, technical writing and cyber security. If you are interested and wish to be notif ied of the details of our information event once available .... please email us at [email protected].
Running Your Own Business? Want Help?
Sneem Digital Hub is forging strong connections with the likes of Kerry Local Enterprise Of f ice and Enterprise Ireland. As well as having in-house experience in training and coaching business owners, we can arrange speakers, training sessions etc. in the areas in which you most want help ... whether that be in set-ting strategy, digital marketing, general marketing, f inancial management etc. Just let us know what you want and, once we have a lot of interest in a particular area we can look to set up appropriate help for you.
We have also collaborated with Kerry LEO to make available a number of Trad-ing Online Vouchers (worth up to €2,500 - matched funding) for local business-es. Please contact us at [email protected] if you are interested in availing of same.
Have Loved Ones Visiting Over The Summer?
If so, why not let them know in advance that they could extend their stay by working f rom the Hub for a day or two? We understand if you don't promote us to those whom you wouldn't wish to stay longer but perhaps to those you could gently suggest an extended stay in one of our wonderful hotels, B&Bs or house rentals while working, where required, f rom the Hub.

TidyTowns Judging
Judging officially began in the SuperValu TidyTowns Competition last Saturday 8th June and continues until mid-August with Sneem receiving two adjudication
visits. We would like to thank everyone for painting and f reshening up the village
and keeping vigilant for litter, etc.
Weekly Tidy Up
We are looking for volunteers to meet every Thursday morning f rom 11am at Sneem Resource Centre to go weeding and litter-picking around the village. There will be tea and biscuits af terwards in the Resource Centre.
Sneem Biodiversity Feasibility Study
We were successful in applying for funding for a Biodiversity Feasibility Study f rom Leader and have begun working on this project with a site visit f rom Ian
McGrigor f rom Gortbrack Organic Farm last Wednesday. We looked at the f ield behind Seaview with a view to creating a
Community Orchard here. We also looked at the f ield beside St. Michael’s Church carpark
which has great potential to become a com-munity space with a natural amphitheatre for
outdoor storytelling, music, plays, etc. If you have views on or ideas for either of these pro-
jects, please let us know. We will be looking for volunteers to clear the church f ield of inva-
sive montbretia and brambles so if you are willing to get involved, contact one of the
working group members (Caroline, Sharon,
Jane, Eileen, Alice, Cara or Ronan) or leave your name in the resource centre.
New Crazy Golf Course
Work is currently underway up at the Sports-f ield on the creation of a Crazy Golf Course.
We are hoping this will be open for the Sum-mer Festival.

Urgent Social Housing Concerns The lack of social housing and rental properties in Sneem is an ongoing issue of grave concern to our small community. Sneem families are being offered social housing in Kenmare with the subsequent loss of children to our crèche, school, GAA, rowing club, etc. One family has already moved to Kenmare with the loss of 2 children to our school and clubs. There are many empty houses in Sneem and it is shocking that there are people who can’t find homes in our village, so if any of your f riends or relations have an empty house here, see if they will make it available. For further information, please contact Julie Knightly, Joe Murphy, Vin-cent O’Leary or Jim O’Sullivan of Sneem Housing Group.

Biodiversity Week
Sneem TidyTowns took part in Kerry/National Biodiversity Week which ran f rom 10th to 26th May by organising four local
events. We kicked off the week on Saturday 18th with a stroll around the village exploring
the biodiversity and plantlife growing on our walls with Ian McGrigor f rom Gortbrack Organ-
ic Farm.
On the Wednesday night, Dr. Mary Catherine Gallagher of the Freshwater Pearl Mussel Pro-
ject based in Kenmare gave us a very interest-ing presentation on this endangered creature
which can live up to 140 years in our rivers. These mussels live in pristine wa-
ter and contribute to maintaining our rivers by f iltering huge
amounts of water. Older mussels have been found in Sneem river
but unfortunately no juveniles which means conditions are not
right to ensure their survival. They have an extremely complex life
cycle which includes the baby mussels latching onto the gills of a passing trout
or salmon.
We had a great crowd for our Bat Talk and Walk on the Friday night. Many
thanks to Conor Kelleher f rom Cork County Bat Group for giving us a great
introduction to bats. We heard a Leis-lers Bat, Daubenton's Bat and Pipi-
strelles along the river bank. We rounded off the week on the Satur-
day afternoon with a short talk and some river sam-pling with Cork and Kerry Community Water Off icer
Kieran Murphy. We would like to thank Ian, Mary Catherine, Conor
and Kieran for travelling to Sneem and giving their time so generously, Kerry County Council for their
support and everyone who came along. Hopefully this will be the f irst of many Biodiversity Weeks in
Sneem and we have already booked a Butterf ly Monitoring Workshop and Swif t Survey for next year!

De Gaulle Visit Anniversary Celebrations
The senior girls were honoured to sing and play music at the event to mark the 50th anniversary of Charles De Gaulle’s visit to Sneem in 1969. The young musicians provided a musical wel-come to the visiting French senators and others assembled for the speeches and the laying of a wreath at the De Gaulle monument, North Square, Sneem on Friday af ternoon ,June 7th.
Discover Primary Science and Maths plaque of STEM Excellence It is with great pleasure that we report that Scoil Eoin has achieved a Discover Primary Science and Maths plaque of STEM Excellence for the 2018/19 academic year. It is fantastic to see all of the science, technology, engineering and maths work being carried out in the school with such enthusiasm and enjoyment. The judges were particularly impressed with our f loat in the St. Patrick’s Day parade and our dedication to educating the community about climate change and sustainable travel.
Health Promoting School Award
The school was presented with a special” Certif i-cate of Recognition”, by Anne Culloty, HSE, in recognition of outstanding contribution, sup-port and commitment to Healthy Ireland, HSE Health promotion. We have been in-volved with the project since the start, 15 years ago ! The pupils received badges and certif icates too. We received a new f lag which we will raise before the holidays. We celebrated with f ruit skewers, a f ruit platter and other treats. We thank everybody who has helped us with health promotion initia-tives over the past f ifteen years. You have contributed to this achievement
River Trip to Tahilla River We had a wonderful river excursion and didn’t have to travel far! Our guides found an interesting and safe stretch of river very near the road and school. We were so ex-cited examining youngl salmon, trout and eel. We returned them to the river and ex-plored water samples for the presence of various species. We were amazed with the abundance of life present in the local river.

Celebrating World Ocean Day
The beach trips to the Coral Beach, near Gleesk Pier and to the White Strand on Friday 6th were wonderful and coincided with World Ocean Day. We had a picnic at the Coral Beach. At White Strand, John Fitzgerald treated us to dillisk crisps and carrageen ice lollies and later he led us on a Seaweed Discovery Walk. It was lowtide and the beach proved to be a wonderful playground. We enjoyed getting to discover our locality and its hidden beauty spots.
Gardening Matters
Our school garden is looking great and we appre-ciate the wonderful help we get! We now have beans, peas, tomatoes, peppers, cabbages, strawberries, blackcurrants, apples, potatoes and lettuce. We have 9 different herbs growing too ! We have a great display of wildf lowers in our lawn at present and hope to learn their names. Kenmare and District Gardening Club
The meeting was held in the Gateway, Kenmare. Stephen Butler, who was head gardener in the Dublin Zoo for 37 years, showed us the huge progress that he has made in creating naturalistic planting for both animals and visitors to the Zoo. What he has achieved over the past 20 years is such an improvement on the restricted unimaginative spaces in which animals spent their conf ined lives. His success in creating interesting walks for visitors (not forgetting a lot of them are only knee high!) with multiple planting, and at the same time creating themed planting in the different animal enclosures with both non edible and edi-ble plants is a truly splendid achievement. There are islands and lakes, savan-nahs and woods, jungles and open plains. There is the extra challenge of creat-ing year round interest as the zoo is always open. The KDGC group, visiting Dublin in July, cannot wait to see it for themselves, particularly as they are go-ing to be shown around by the man himself ! The club breaks for the summer until September 5th, when it will be entertained by Simon and Margaret at Willowf ield Garden Centre at the usual time of 7.30p.m. New members are so welcome – we are a very diverse group who just love to chat about plants and gardens.! After several evenings of talks by interesting speakers on a wide range of gar-dening subjects, we are taking our midsummer break to tend to our own gar-dens. Why not visit any gardens which open to visitors during the summer and maybe come to some of our autumn and winter evenings at Gateway, Killarney Road, Kenmare as well, to further your gardening interests. Watch for our no-tices in this publication and attend as a visitor or prospective member, we will make you most welcome.

Blackwater News
The Blackwater community had to unite, leaving personal differences, political allegiances and other issues aside, in order to achieve their ultimate goal, to build their own church. The play also had
at its core a darker story that touched the soul and out of which goodness
came. The play had the audiences laughing and crying and coming back for more. Many thanks to all who came to see the play, they were wonderful audiences who lif ted the cast night after night.
