A TRIBUTE TO ERIC ROHMER AND "THE SIX MORAL TALES" July 16 - 17, 2010 >> Aero Theatre Presented in association with the French Film & TV Office, French Embassy, Los Angeles and Cultures France Eric Rohmer (1921 - 2010), one of the founding filmmaker-critics of the influential French New Wave, developed a contemplative, beautifully rhythmic cinematic language all his own. At a time when film tastes were shifting toward genre and visual stylistics, Rohmer, once a novelist and teacher of literature, retained focus on the nuances of conversation and interaction. In a Rohmer film, what is said and done between char- acters is important - while what is left unsaid and undone between char- acters is vitally important. This is seen throughout Rohmer's most famous series of films, "The Six Moral Tales," begun in 1963. In MY NIGHT AT MAUD'S, the Rohmer film best-known to American audiences, a man and a woman engage in existential discussion on a snowbound evening. The result is an ele- gant character study that reveals modern dilemmas and daily tragedies with frankness and even humor. This same patient attention is prevalent in Rohmer's other "Moral Tale" masterworks, CLAIRE'S KNEE, CHLOE IN THE AFTERNOON and LA COLLECTIONNEUSE. Join us for a week- end tribute to the magnificent career of Eric Rohmer with his "Six Moral Tales," plus, screenings of the shorts "The Bakery Girl of Monceau" and "Suzanne's Career." Series compiled by Gwen Deglise and Scott Foundas. Program notes by Beth Hanna. ACE ON THE SCREEN: A WEEKEND TRIBUTE TO BILLY WILDER July 22 - 25, 2010 >> Aero Theatre It seems like Hollywood was invented for Billy Wilder (1906 - 2002) to roast over an open fire. His films - from SUNSET BOULEVARD to STALAG 17 to THE APARTMENT - are equal parts venom and poetry, nihilism and bruised romanticism. Wilder grew up in what is now Poland, among gamblers, hustlers and world wars - " I learned many things about human nature, none of them favorable," he said about his childhood. Arriving in Hollywood in 1933 (where he roomed with fellow émigré Peter Lorre), Wilder began banging out scripts for such fast, furious comic gems as NINOTCHKA and BALL OF FIRE with Charles Brackett, before turning to directing in the early 1940s. From film noir masterpieces such as DOU- BLE INDEMNITY and ACE IN THE HOLE through a string of great farces and romantic comedies - FOREIGN AFFAIR, SABRINA, SOME LIKE IT HOT, THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH - filmmaker Wilder had a spectacular, peerless career. Also included in the retrospective are AVANTI! and IRMA LA DOUCE. Series compiled by Grant Moninger and Gwen Deglise. Program note additions by Beth Hanna. YOUR SHOW OF SHOWS: A LAUGH-OUT-LOUD WEEKEND WITH MEL BROOKS AND CARL REINER July 22 - 28, 2010 >> Egyptian Theatre In the early 1950s, NBC's variety show “Your Show of Shows” gave America a weekly dose of top-notch comedy and music, courtesy of Sid Caesar, Imogene Coca and a group of spectacular featured performers. The program also showcased the early work of some of the best come- dy writers in the business, including Neil Simon, Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner (who later re-created his experi- ences with his own “The Dick Van Dyke Show”). The Cinematheque proudly pres- ents a selection of “Your Show Of Shows” sketches, as well as films it inspired (MY FAVORITE YEAR) and those written and directed by its most beloved artists, Carl Reiner (ENTER LAUGHING, THE JERK, DEAD MEN DON'T WEAR PLAID, THE MAN WITH TWO BRAINS) and Mel Brooks (BLAZING SADDLES, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, SILENT MOVIE, HISTORY OF THE WORLD PART 1). PLATINUM CAREER: A TRIBUTE TO KIM NOVAK July 30 - August 1, 2010 >> Egyptian Theatre Co-presented by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and Los Angeles magazine In 1956, Kim Novak became the world's No. 1 box office star, a title she held for three consecutive years. It's not hard to understand this phenomenal success when you watch her work. Her sumptuous looks and restrained, introspective demeanor allowed her to excel in difficult roles that required seemingly contradictory qualities. It's impossible to forget her dual role as both the regal, distant Madeleine and the achingly ordinary Judy in Alfred Hitchcock's VERTIGO, or as Madge, PICNIC's misunder- stood pageant queen, to name just two of her roles. Novak's work continues to receive acclaim. In 1997, she was honored at the Berlin International Film Festival with the prestigious Golden Bear Award for lifetime achievement, and in 2003, she was presented with the highly selective Eastman (Kodak) Archives Award for her contribution to film. Please join us for a weekend tribute to the career of Kim Novak. The 35mm prints of PICNIC, PAL JOEY, BELL BOOK & CANDLE and MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT have been beautifully restored courtesy of Sony Pictures in anticipation of the "Kim Novak Collection" DVD box-set to be released by Sony August 3rd. Series compiled by Grant Moninger and Gwen Deglise. Program notes by Beth Hanna.
