Eight members of the Class of 2016 offer a look at their Senior Thesis.

“‘Spirited Spaces’ expresses my unconscious thoughts and intuition by transforming everyday environments into imaginative new narratives. The subjects in my photographs have their own unique personal journeys through stories, encounters, and surreal scenarios. Variety of slight details including color, space, and subject matter allow the viewer to create their own interpretation.”

“My art is about the constant struggle, the push

and pull of everyday life, and the overwhelming

beauty of this all. I want for it to promote freedom

through limitations, incorporate dynamic

dichotomy, and growth from understanding the

illusion of boundaries. It is about consciousness,

awareness, and intelligent action to create objects of

quality.”

“The work completed for my thesis is a fruition of

everything I have learned from the faculty at PCA&D, from hand lettering to web

design. Using a bow tie company as the subject of my Senior Thesis gave me

room for creativity and innovation. My design

inspiration came from the art deco era of design as well as the fashion and

architecture of the 1920’s. This enabled me to create

a brand that blends old design approaches with

new breakthroughs, such as digital illustration and

“This piece was originally created for an animal anatomy project assigned in the late fall semester. Though I typically prefer to work in watercolor as my senior thesis will demonstrate, this piece was created digitally in a style that still stays true to a painterly mindset.”

“My thesis project, “Girlfriends”, is focused around the intimate connections that I have with my group of best friends. I have spent the year making self-portraits with them in our apartments and around the city. I am exploring our personal relationships while also making work that contributes to a conversation about feminism and the history of female representation in photography.”

“For a long time now I have seen in my work a duality. It exists in between

high and low brow, or absurd while also having a sense of anxiety. I create narrative work that is still ambiguous. I work in flattened spaces but also try to render objects to add depth. I am

interested in treading between looseness and tightness. I am inspired

by outsider art as well as expert craftsmen. I am wedging myself

between these two things hoping to find the best elements of both.”

“For this piece I wanted to convey something fun and

enjoyable, while sticking with the given theme from the client.

I felt like the event needed an enticing and

colorful postcard.”

“After my time in the

Marines I was working as a contractor in

Afghanistan, and I spent my free time drawing. I realized

that this was what I wanted to be doing.”
