    Glory, included in this

issue. We have had a few

    games of this over the

month, but with miniaturesstill getting painted we

    wont have any photos of

    the action yet.

    That being said there are

    actually three sets of rules

    with the above title. The

    original one by Anthony

    Reynolds, and 2 fan based

    ones. All are available on

the net, but we have includ-

ed one of the fan based

publications, and will havepart 2 next issue.

The rule sets are all about

    creating your own Chaos

    Warband using excerpts

    from the Warhammer rules,

    and going around the

    wastes and smashing other

    warbands in the hope of

    some favour for your efforts

    from your choice of chaos

    deity. Enjoy...

    SEE YOU THERE

    Hi Everyone,

I hope that you all had a

    great October.

    Wow Issue number 13. This

    should be a Birthday Issue.

    Happy 1st Birthday to Snake

    Eyes.

First off the bat, is we have a

    Readers Survey included in

this issue. Please take the time

to have a read and tell us what

you think, and what you would

like to see. There is an

    excellent prize for the GGG

member who returns to us acompleted survey and gets

    drawn from the entries. See

page 9 for the prize, and big

    thanks to Warlord Games for

    sponsoring the survey.

    Dog County Range Wars has

    interestingly gone into

    defensive mode, with players

    pulling back from their first

    stings and creating the new

front lines of what is turning

into a Range War. Some play-

ers have made boasts on who

    is going down...next turn will

see, or follow the action by

    watching the Dogtown group .

    The Necromunda Campaign,

see page 11, is something we

have never tried before so it

will be great to see how it

goes . It is almost like support-

    ing your favourite team with-

    out the sports bet.

    Necromunda has been out so

    long, that figures are expen-

    sive to source. The other

    problem is getting gamers

    together. This will solve

    some of that.

    Nothing beats playing a

game but when you cant oryou dont have the figures or

    rules...This will be the game

    youre playing when your not

    playing a game...ok too

    young to remember the Clay-

    tons advert?

With only 25 spots open get

    in quick to play.

We are hoping to have a

    tournament calendar up

    soon. There are so many

    different gaming tourna-

    ments happening all over the

place. We would like to keep

you up to date on the ones

we get info about, so if you

    are running a tournament

please send us details so we

can give you or your club

    some promoting.

    The 1850 point 40k

    Gauntlet is being run again

    at the Pink Hotel at

Pinkenba, Brisbane onNovember 15 and 16. There

are still some spots up for

    grabs. Contact Rod Franze

    REVIEWS ON THE RUN

    DEAD MANS HAND

Last month I nally got around to buy-

ing a set of rules for Dead Mans Hand. I

love the western genre, and just so I did-nt go without, I also purchased two

gangs. These were Banditos and Indians.

Having a good sized collecon of 28mm

    western miniatures already, I thought

that having more Mexican and Indian

    gures wouldnt do me wrong.

Previously I have bought Old Glory,

    Arzan, Reaper, Dixon, and Foundry

western miniatures. Old Glory were a bit

smaller being more 25mm gures but all

were nice enough moulds, with the ex-

pected amount of ash. Aer opening

the boxes of DMH miniatures, I have to

say that I was quite disappointed.

With seven miniatures per box, which is

an old video case size box, they are

packed in a lile bag of bubble wrap.

Loose, in the bubble wrap. Every minia-

ture that had a protruding item, (usually

the pistol or rie), was bent, probably

from hing up against each other in the

bag. Lile separate baggies would have

prevented this. Also, the amount of ash

on these models are ridiculous. More

than the usual with metal models, and

more work for the player, to base and

prep for painng. I dont expect out of

the box and play immediately with these,

but they are so far at the other end of the

scale from other miniatures available to

purchase now, I have to say that the rst thought

into my head was one of buyers remorse.

On the plus side there is quite a bit of detail on

the miniatures. All have been sculpted with aen-on to detail when it comes to vests, kerchiefs

and gun belts and the like, so there is a nice varie-

    ty there..

The rules are easy enough to work through, and

the lile pack of cards adds another random ele-

ment, with bonus acons that your gang can do.

They also create the iniave order in which your

    moves can be made.

    WINGS OF GLORY

Last month also saw some acon for Wings of

Glory. I had purchased the starter pack for around

$30 which included the Rules, 2 biplanes (The Red

Baron and his nemesis), and the cards required to

play. When I rst read the rules I was a lile

daunted, but pacing the game out page by page

showed an easy and quick combat system. The

bases of the model stands are clear, allowing the

placing of cards under them which show yourintended move. There are three moves each per

turn and you have to plan the three ahead, plac-

ing your cards facedown, and turning each over

with your opponent, one for one. Very similar to

Star Wars X-Wing with no dice for the ring,

which is the only thing this game needs to provide

that decisive but random element. I enjoyed it

enough to purchase another two planes and a

playing mat, giving either four players or two play-

ers controlling 2 planes each, a more immersiveexperience.

    Game Design...dice, cards and counters...

    P A G E 4I S S U E 1 3

it needs, is fine tuning as you go.

I would suggest that when play

    testing you include some sea-

    soned gamers who may suggest

some elements of play that you

    might have missed, and of

course, as you play you will be

able to add elements and delete

the ones that dont work as

    smoothly.

Dont be afraid to play similar

    themed games to yours, that

might be out there, to garner

experience in the genre, and to

ensure that your new game isnt

too much like their game. You

    can usethings in those games

    from other manufacturers

that you enjoy, but be awareof breaching any copy write

laws. A lot of games out now

are not new ideas but recrea-

tions of the better rule sets

    being bought together.

So to summarise, and I know

Ive only covered the basics of

    these, pick a theme, decide

what the end goal is of your

game, work out the rules, play

test the game, create a frame-

    work, work out your random

    element, (Dice, cards or coun-

ters), and if its good enough,

put it on Kickstarter to fund

    your creaon.

    miniatures, and other products

    that go with it. Thankfully

    historical games have not gone

    down that path.

    For instance people playing

    Black Powder, dont have to

    buy x manufacturers gures

to play their game system. Yetsome companies demand that

    (where they run or sponsor)

    tournaments or events that

you can only play using their

    brand of miniatures.

    Certainly some of the more

    esoteric systems like Relic

    Knights wont nd many

    companies that produce

    gures in compeon.

    I have found that many

systems tend to be a ash in

the pan. They have an inial

    splash that gets much interest,

but then it peters out, leaving

many with gures that have no

    other use.

    This is where some collectors

can then step in and pick up

gures and such for muchlower, (generally speaking)

    prices. The only downside is

    that your range of opponents

    to play a disconnued game

    system is small or non-

    existent.

    It dees logic that many

    manufacturers prefer to

    change scale rather than

making their product suitableto other perhaps more popular

    game systems.

    It is hard somemes to

decide upon what you want to

    collect when building armies

for the games we play. Today,

    historical games are the last

    basons of true diversity.

    Aer all an ancient Egypan

    warrior will not change to

    something they were not rec-

    ognised as being. Thus, many

    manufacturers will produce

    gures for this period, the

    compeon for this market is

    such that prices remain low

    (ish), when compared to com-

    panies that produce gures

solely for the use of their game

    systems.

    The companies that produce

gures today, seem to need to

    have their own rule systems

    From the Collectors Vault

    There are

    many gaming

    systems out

    there...all you

    have to do is

    find one that

    suits you

    Game design takes many hours

of pros and cons, play testingand getting others opinions but

dont get too bogged down over

details , because it is also fun,

and thats the last thing you

    want to lose.

I know of one guy who spent

    many months writing notes and

    talking about creating the perfect

game, and along the way lost the

motivation in the details. Ergo, the game goes nowhere. If I

asked him today how is the game

going he would probably tell me,

    Im still working on it.

Play test your rules as you go.

Dont wait to have it perfect. All

At our last session our intrepid adventurers have

decided to make the journey to the Koronus ex-panse to obtain a rare artifact requested by the

    Black Crystal Cartel.

On reaching their destination they find a world de-

void of life signs. Locating the ruins of a temple theBK company head to the surface hot and fast.Once entrenched the captain directs a temporary

comms base to be set up, and sets off down a well-constructed tunnel leading directly into the bowelsof the planet. A short hike of 10km later they

arrive at a large blast door.

The door opens easily to reveal. NECRONS!Thousands and thousands of Necrons! That is why

there are no other life signs! Sensors are indicatingtheir objective is another 1.5 km inside the Necron

    base.

They manage to proceed unnoticed for the first

750m or so, but then the sentinels awake andeverything starts to go wrong They can see whatappears to be their objective ahead, a large green

glowing crystal mounted above a control panel. The quickest party members take off fast while theremainder of the company sets up a defensive po-

    sition.

Necrons are now materializing and others startingto wake from stasis. They reef the crystal from itsmounting and a quick thinking Tristan drops a gre-

nade down the attached power conduit. They turnto flee when the captain notices a foot behind theconsole a quick investigation reveals a body, a

sword, and a data slate that are all scooped up on

    the fly.

The following explosion is incredible and seems to

have back fed through the entire Necron powerconduit system, sending sheets of electricity arcing

    out all around.

The party beats a hasty retreat, blowing apart

Necrons with every step. Things look grim howev-er when Karno fires off a vortex grenade whichimplodes and begins to go nova and expand rapid-

    ly.

Vehicular backup arrives and everyone piles in.They make it back and evacuate to the ship just as

a Necron crescent detaches from the planet. Not

sticking around, the crew immediately warp jump.

nally a win -well he did concede the battlefield!

ot often I get to brag about a "win" in my games of Napoleonic's.

his time I ditched the lancers from my list and upgraded as many of the troops to trained regulars, with skirmish-

s in all units that could have them.

ecided not to take photos for the game as I wasn't feeling particularly confident. Certainly my deployment was

amped with one flank almost cramped with terrain. My dice rolls were as usual, crap, but it was at least

    nsistent crap.

he photos below show the final turn of play. Usually my troops never make it across the table, never break

nemy units, or get breakthroughs. So Andrew conceded the game, I said a win for me, he said "I conceded theld of battle, not the battle itself" -or words to that effect.Never the less it was nice to have something go my

ay, if only for one game. See next page for the army list.

y right flank. Bogged down by units blocking movement. My

andwehr again did very little. My second last bound. Dragoons ready to

    charge. French artillery chased off.

Prussians advancing. Though the square was

left there just for the French dragoons.

Lots of unusual things happened. One

battalion followed a routing unit and

    SNAKE EYES

The rst turn of Dog County Range Wars saw several bales break out on the map as players

expanded their lands to increase their income. Marty ODoney of the ODoney Hacienda faced

bales on two fronts. Big Frank and the Bar C, Captain Augustus McCrae of the Hat Creek Cale

Company, T.S. Baramblecoat of Deadwood Ranch, Bugmans Ranch, Reo Krey of the GGG Pastoral

Company, Diamond Back Pete of The Old Stump, all claimed to have seen some acon, vowing

payback and revenge on the other Ranchers.

By turn 2, everyone knew about the shoong, and with the excepon of a couple of the Ranch-

es, most turned inwards to their defences, and waited for the ght to come to them.

It was all that Reo Krey of the GGG could do to not avenge his fallen ranch hand. More im-

portantly were the lives of the others, as he set up a solid defence on the banks of the Clearwater

    River.

Over at the B-B-Q it was a dierent story, as Bob Tonic Brown, whipped his men into a frenzy

with one of his inspired speeches. It was a big jump from the broken man in the guer of Dog-

town all those months ago...no longer a vicm to his own tonics, Bob rallied his men for war.

At the MacCaroney Ranch, Boss Tony had word about his neighbour to the north,

praccally invading the lands of his original allotment, and made moves to stop this

    threat, once and for all.

The ODoney Hacienda wasnt leng anything or anyone stand in their way, when it

came to expansion. Having lost 2 ranch hands, Marty ODoney laid the blame squarely

at the feet of Bob Brown. Somehow...it was all his fault and now theres gonna be a

    reckonin.

At Tumbleweeds, things had slowed but not stopped. Unsure of which way his

closest neighbour was going to head, Barnaby Simmons moved his men into posion,

reminding them that the orders were shoot rst, ask quesons later. To

    hell with being friendly anymore...

Big Frank watched the chuck wagons head o over the horizon. The dust they kicked up and

the seng sun nged the sky an ominous blood red. "We need water and we need it bad!"

He'd told the boys before they'd headed o. Frank had worked the land hard since he'd set

up the ranch house, maybe too hard. What had once been ferle grazing land had started to

dry up having to carry the weight of too many cale. Frank had sold o his rst batch of

steers and sunk his earnings into 2 chuck wagons and sent most of his boys o with them

looking for a permanent source of water. "Any water you nd is ours and don't go len any

no good varmint you come across think otherwise," had been his nal orders. Turning back

to the bunkhouse he spoed a malingering shadow under the eves, "Pepe you'd beer have

cooked up something beer than your goddamn awful chilli. We've got a power of work to

    do tomorrow."

arty O'Doney had not been as lucky as some in the ballot for lands. His

al allocaon was well away from the rivers and their life -giving ow

water. He, his wife and the rest of the team knew this place was going

be hard to make into a viable proposion. However, they all knew

at if this didn't work out then the family's western adventure would be

er and they would have to move back east. O'Doney was proud of his

wboys. While some were new, most of them had been loyal and hard-

orking men in O'Doney's employment for a long-me now. Back before

ogtown's demise, they successfully ran the several businesses that

Doney's owned -from the livery and blacksmith on the main street to

e market garden on the edge of town. Dogtown was their home and

ey had all worked hard to make the Dogtown a prosperous "oasis" in

e middle of these vast western plains. Then the disaster! ... and now

e second chance. On arrival at their allocated land they set about

ilding a small ranch building for O'Doney and his family as well a bunk-

use for the boys. Then, aer some meculous planning and organisa-

n, O'Doney sent his boys out earlier this month. They were searching

r richer grazing lands for the cale. One group took their chuck-wagon

d some cale roughly north looking for a beer source of water than

eir brackish well at the ranch could provide. There had been a rumour

at there was a creek in that direcon somewhere. Another group took

eir cale and chuck-wagon in a southerly direcon looking for some

sh grazing land that several of the cowboys had seen when originally

aking their way to the ranch. Now O'Doney had to wait. Did his cow-

ys nd what they set out to nd? Did they run into trouble with other

nchers? Did that infernal Bob "Tonic" Brown send some men to disruptm? All these things had been preying on his mind for weeks. Hopefully

e news will be good, but as always, he was prepared for the worst.

Opportunies for business investment will be tendered

later this year or early next, allowing prospecve business

men and women to invest in individual businesss in Dog-

town to keep the businesss open and make more money

for the investors. The Mayor and other townsfolk believe

that allowing investment in the town will create more busi-

ness creaon. Lucas Shelman agrees with the local council

however stated that his hotel would not be up for invest-

ment. That of course doesnt stop healthy compeon

from happening in our streets. Dennet Tull, owner of sev-

eral Riverboats, said that Dogtown was in the perfect posi-

on to boom, between new selers and the river trade,

things would be on the up and up.

The top three Ranches from last

    month had MacCoroney Ranch, the

Lucky O and the DoubleHorn in the

lead. According to local sources, the

best money can be made on river

    blocks, producing faer cale and

beer rices when it comes to saleme. Town bank clerk Johnny

Broon put his 2 cents in, stang that

those Ranches not in or near good

river lands need to either get near

them, or create a huge spread to

make a similar income. Not with-

    standing natural disasters, Ranchers

can see what lands are making them

good income, and the ones that

dont. I wouldnt waste my men look-ing aer low income lands when they

could be out there nding high in-

    come lands. Dont forget those

    mines.

    Fears of the annual buffalo

    migration has Ranchers con-

    cerned for their lands. Before

    the Ranches were allocated,

    mighty herds of these majestic

    animals would make their way

    through the plains in Dog

    County. The Indians took what

    they wanted and hunters

would always bag a few, but

they will trample and eat their

    way threw good lands, leaving

    only arid and sometimes unus-

    able land behind them, at

    least until the snows melt

and refresh the land. Can the

    Ranchers wait that long?

Steam Boat coming to Dogtown. Lucas Shelman, local publican,

made good on his word to build a Steamboat stop right here in

Dogtown. With a scheduled stop Ranchers will soon be able to

come straight to Dogtown via the river. According to the Mayor,

only ve Ranch Hands from each spread will be able to travel on

the RiverBoat, to save any issues between feuding neighbours.

The Dog County Range Wars players map, turn 2, allows players in the campaign to gauge their expansion in the new territory as well as

have a guess where their opponents might be. The colour coding shows where the real money is, in terms of land and income. Lush Lands

that are worked, (that is to say that a Ranch Hand is holding that land at the end of the turn), is worth $100 income to that Ranch.

Abundant Lands are worth $75, Grazing Lands are worth $50 and Arid Lands will produce $25 per month if worked. This informaon will

allow players to plan their next expansion to create the most prot, and to defend the more expensive property, avoiding the cheaper

ands. The black squares around the map represent Trading Posts, and the big one in the centre is where Dogtown is. The Red Stars are the

Ranches. The trees represent mbered hexes which when harvested will become grazing lands. Brown colours are mountain ranges which

ike the rivers and trading posts, can be named as the players discover them. Silver can be found in the mountains, but its risky. You might

ose that ranch hand. Red skull and bones show land clashes last turn where bales have occurred. Players can now just send what num-

bered hex that their Ranch Hands will be going to and through. Go to Dogtown group on Facebook for the current map and more details.

I have been gaming since 1992 when a friend of mine, a bit of a Ferret (His nickname), introduced

me to Warhammer 40k back in 2ndedion. As no one else in our group had chosen them, I was

selected to try out Tyranids, and the nicknamed tle of Bugboy began.

At the me we were year 8 students with lile money, but much interest. Several of our rst

games consisted of graph paper (2mmx2mm squares) and no models, with my big creatures and

Dreadnought represented by a 2x2 square, Tanks as 3x2, bikes by a 2x1 square and most others as asingle square.

The second game I was introduced to was Magic the Gathering, which at the me was just

    releasing 4thedion.

Ferret also introduced me to a group known as the Warhounds, and for my rst non-Brisbane

compeon, and in an aempt to try out other players, I travelled to Toowoomba for a compeon.

Four of ve of my opponents were Brisbane Warhound members Bob Hook and Chris Taylor, (now

GGG members-Ed) made examples of me, but I sll recall with nostalgia the Dark Eldar opponent

the only non Warhounds member) whom I took out by turn 3 with the excepon of his skimmers.

havent been able to do that in a long while...

As part of work I have travelled to the Middle East, where I didnt nd any gaming groups, to places

were I found what I was looking for; Orange -Orange Modelling & Wargaming Society, Cowra -

Cowra Gaming Club, and Bathurst -B.R.A.W.L., all in New South Wales, the Garrison Group in

Adelaide, South Australia, and the Ringwood Gaming Club in Melbourne, Victoria, and not forgeng

the Blind Pig Games Club in Brisbane. All of them were great groups of people promong that which

they and I enjoy, gaming. While in Perth, Western Australia I found an acve gaming group, but as I

didnt stay in Perth long, I didnt manage to make any connecons.

In my me I have collected somewhere over 16,000 points of Tyranids, plus a couple of bio tans,

about 4000 of Ultramarines in 40k plus a dwarf and a chaos Warrior armies for Warhammer. I have

also travelled to Nongham, England to see the Games Workshop head Oce and picked up a

Dwarven Blood bowl team with a model of Bugman that I am planning to use as coach (some day I

am going to have to assemble them), I have a small Necromunda gang and using models from Hero

Quest box sets played Mordheim, with a Vampire Crew.

Mostly I sll play 40k, and enjoy the occasional big game (Apocolypse), but I enjoy the smaller cam-

paign games like Blood bowl, Necromunda, Mordheim and of course Dogtown. I also played in the

soon to nish campaign of WFRP.

Unl we meet again, may all your games be enjoyable ;-)
