EVER WONDER where your axe, git box, twanger or six string came from? And I am not talking about the music store around the corner, or even the manufacturer that has it’s name printed on your headstock. I am talking about as an instrument, before people started making money from selling them, and before music was a billion dollar industry. Let me start out by saying, you could not have always called it a six string! The idea of the guitar can be traced back over 4000 years. Let me tell you some of the guitars’ ancestors might have been a little tougher to play the solo for “the final countdown” than on today’s version. The earliest stringed instruments that archaeologists know about are known as bowl harps, which were made from a bent stick, a tortoise shell and silk strings, and date back

Bowl Harps and Tanburs may have been the start of the guitar industry, but the simple idea of putting some strings together to make music is a little bit different in today’s version of the guitar. The modern guitar typically has 6 strings and is made from a variety of materials (from rosewood, to basswood, to maple, and many more) depending on the type and manufacturer of the guitar. Also our sound technology allows us to plug in these guitars and blow the roof off of any stadium.

It is safe to say that in 4000 thousand years the guitar has come a long way. So before you pick up your guitar and decide that it is your ticket to making millions, remember where they came from, and that music is not just about money, but about passion, enjoyment, and turning sounds into beautiful music!

to earlier than 2500 BCE….good luck busting out even the simplest of modern music on that bad boy!

The oldest preserved guitar like instrument is over 3500 years old. How would you like to add that to your vintage guitar collection? This instrument was known as a tanbur. This guitar only had three strings and a soundbox made of cedarwood and rawhide. However, I bet the person who played it was probably still king of the campfire!

Ryan Oldham is an up and coming comic out of Sudbury, Ontario. Although relatively new to the scene, he has received great response with his eccentric stage persona and fusion of music and stand-up comedy. From the mind of a 23 year old going on 13, Ryan spits shock humor at it’s finest with a hint of boyish good looks and charm... (emphasis on the “hint”). Armed with only an acoustic guitar and the obscenities running through his veins, he presents an act sure to drop jaws to the floor.

Northern Lights Festival BoréalTHIS YEARS NORTHERN LIGHTS FESTIVAL BORÉAL WAS A BIG ONE, THEIR 40TH FESTIVAL TO BE EXACT AND IT WAS NOTHING SHORT OF EXCITING.

Lunch at Allen’s concluded the first batch of performances on the new Grace Hartman Amphitheatre. This foursome includes Juno Award winner Murray McLaughchlan, who just so happened to be the featured performer at the first ever Northern Lights Folk Festival in 1972.

The fun didn’t stop once the shows were done at Bell Park, Ladies of the Canyon, Pistol George Warren and others headed to The Townehouse, which has been the official off-site venue for the festival for many years.

Local band Ox performed Saturday on the Canvas Cabaret stage, and treated only Sudburians to the release of their new album a whopping 5 months in advance. Following Ox was Low Guns, a two-piece Sudbury band. If you listen with your eyes closed, you would have no idea that there are just two of them playing loud and dirty blues tunes.

The big act for Saturday was Canadian indie band and two-time Juno winners Broken Social Scene. This band had more than 7 people on stage at a time including current touring front woman Lisa Lobsinger, who joined in singing the soft and intense song All in All among others that night.

IT WAS A GREAT VISION IN 1972 AND NOW ON ITS 40TH ADITION, OUR FESTIVAL BORÉAL RETAINS ITS VITALITY...

Saturday was entertaining yes, but the real pièce de résistance was the performances on Sunday.

During The Really Big NLFB 40th Anniversary Show tribute was paid to the passed NLFB veterans and the current performers in a 2 and a half hour review. Among the performers were Patricia Cano, Paul Dunn and Sunny Side Paris.

Capping off this exciting weekend to a packed amphitheatre was the band that’s impossible to label; The Weakerthans. The Weakerthans appeal to a broad audience for people who enjoy everything from punk to folk.

NLFB provides a mix of local and sought after talent.

“It was a great vision in 1972 and now on its 40th adition, our Festival Boréal retains its vitality and always exemplifies the importance of supporting community events as agents of socialization, respect and acknowledgment of traditions and catalysts for change,” said Artistic Director Paul Loewenberg.

The talent in this town runs deep and NLFB is just one of the means of showing it off.

With 5 different stages to choose from, music and entertainment were heard from all over Bell Park as local and touring bands took the stage.

Friday’s events kicked off with opening ceremonies and local music from the likes of Kim Schmidt and Tuba Boy, to the band The Little Stevies all the way from Australia.

August 27th and 28th Myths and Mirrors presents Picnicfest, in Victory Park!

This year, Picnicfest will be bigger and better than ever. We’re working hard to bring you the most diverse and innovative music festival the North has to offer. For those of you who have been to Picnicfest in the past, you know what to expect: the best local bands playing all original music, as well as some of Canada’s most innovative touring bands. Add to that some mind-blowing multimedia implementation, and exciting booths from local vendors and artists, and you’re left with a can’t-miss festival.

You can buy an advance weekend pass from Cosmic Dave’s Vinyl Emporium for the low price of $30. So far, the following acts are confirmed for Saturday, August 27th: Forest City Lovers, who are Toronto’s indie/folk superstars; they are also headlining the Friday at River and Sky Camping and Music Festival this year. Also on Saturday, Toronto’s heavy riff monster TITAN.

For Sunday, August 28th, the following acts are confirmed: Zorch, an experimental rock outfit from Austin, Texas, who wowed critics at this year’s South by Southwest music festival. Also performing will be DD/MM/YYYY, Toronto’s psychedelic rock experimentalists. DD/MM/YYYY are like no band you’ve ever heard.

Propulsive, profoundly weird, and meticulous with their arrangements, DD/MM/YYYY will leave you smiling unabashedly.

We’re still working on the local acts, but there will be an unimaginable diversity of bands running the gamut through rock, metal, blues, hip hop, punk, hardcore and more! Sudbury has the strongest music scene in Canada, and the cream of Sudbury’s local talent will be performing at Picnicfest this year!

See you the last weekend of August, and don’t forget to pick up your advance passes from Cosmic Dave’s Vinyl Emporium in the Donovan.calendar

Movie Reviews

FARERWELL TO A SAGAHarry Potter has cast a spell over all us it seems. We have been blessed to be taken on a fantastic journey full of witches, wizards, dragons, house elves, basilisks and centaurs. However, the most important journey we’ve been taken on is the ever famous fight between what is good and what is evil. Harry Potter is a symbol of hope, courage and determination, and it is in these very traits that each of us wishes to see some semblance of the people we are or someday strive to become.

Author J.K. Rowling is a gifted writer with apparently no limits when it comes to wowing the imagination. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 is the last installment to the eight-part series we have adorned over the past decade. If you weren’t a follower or a fan at the beginning of the series, you definitely became part of the fan club by the end of it.

Part 2 of Deathly Hallows begins right where the last one ended, which was comforting in terms of keeping with the continuity of the films. This film being the revelation of the series left viewers with a sense of comfort, ease and closure which is what we all desperately hoped would be done in a tasteful manner. Director David Yates, producers David Heyman, David Barron and Rowling herself kept the integrity of the film alive.

The quest throughout the entire eight-part series has always been the same; to destroy arch nemesis Lord Voldemort, along with his two best friends Hermione Granger and Ron

Weasley. Harry embarks on his last journey in this film to destroy the last remaining Horcruxes, thus rendering Voldemort weak and vulnerable to destruction.

The ending of this film came swiftly but rightly so. Film franchises that tend to run as long as this one appears to lose their libido at some point. This seems to be the only series that has proved this trend wrong. Each film has only been better than the last and has continued to recruit more and more fans as the years have passed. Although the ending is something we have all been waiting for, we are still left with a sense of sadness. Not only because we aren’t content with the way it ended, but because we are sad to be saying farewell to the many characters we have come to love over the years. The Harry Potter series are incredible films in their own right. It is a tale of friendship and the belief in something magical beyond ourselves. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint were three young children from different walks of life who started their first year at the Hogwarts School of Magic. They had no idea what adventure and struggles lay ahead of them but one thing was for sure, their lives would never be the same again. Thanks to these three young actors and the amazing imaginative team behind the Harry Potter production, our lives also will never be the same.

Farewell

AUTOBOTS: ROLL OUT!The Transformers series, which has been around since we were children, has dramatically evolved from our small television screens in the comfort of our own homes to the big screens. Our once familiar children’s stories have embarked on a metamorphosis. The fight between the Autobots and the Decepticons for their homeland of Cybertron has always been the nucleus of the transformers series, and in a sense, although much has changed, we’ve always appreciated the familiarity of the story.

The first film in the series, directed by Michael Bay, was released in 2007 and proved to be exhilarating and exciting and brought promise of reintegrating our beloved television series into the 21st century. Unfortunately, like many movie sequels, the series have failed to hold on to its fire and have begun to dissipate in terms of originality, action sequence, content, and dialogue.

Transformer: Dark Side of the Moon released earlier this month, brought no promise of reigniting the dying series. The film was long, unimaginative and failed to deliver what somel anticipated to be the climax of the series to date.

Dark Side of the Moon is based on the human discovery of a long lost Cybertronian spacecraft with the ability to end the war between Autobots and Decepticons. Discovered on the Moon, it is eventually revealed to Optimus Prime and his fellow Autobots on earth. They of course devise a plan to retrieve the important contents in the spacecraft; the offline body of Autobot leader Sentinal Prime. What the Autobots

and their human counterparts don’t realize is that they`re all pawns in the scheme the Decepticons have cooked up to transport their homeland Cybertron to Earth, using special pillars found in this spacecraft. The twist in all of this is that the Decepticons have allied themselves with not only humans to do their bidding, but also Megatron, leader of the Autobots. Tyranny and betrayal is in the air as Optimus Prime, his loyal Autobots, Sam Witwicky, played by Shia LaBeouf, and their human allies fight to set things right. Wait, this sounds just like the other two films. What on earth will they bring forth for the fourth film? What I have come to realize is that it doesn’t matter how ridiculous, convoluted and repetitive these story lines get, we will still go watch these films because they are backed by the Transformers license.

The greatness of a film is determined by its content, message, delivery and ability to evoke something in its viewers that keep them coming back for more. Apparently producers lost sight of this fact when they chose to bring in every Hollywood actor who wanted to be a part of the series, and a Victoria Secret model who would replace Megan Fox as the love interest of Sam Witwicky.

Do not be alarmed. There is a silver lining to all of this. Be sure to prepare yourself for moments of satirical relief. Apart from the obvious hot chick and cool looking cars that turn into robots and blow things up, there really isn’t much else to be admired about Transformers Dark of the Moon.
