When it comes to getting the finish that you want, with SmartScreen privacy screens, the world is your oyster.

1. Install without further coatings. This option allows you to take advantage of natural weathering. The panels will dull over time to a soft rustic finish. All cedar and black SmartScreen’s are pre-finished in a protective coating at the factory to ensure longevity of your project.

2. Oil or stain them. To maintain or enhance the original finish, you can re-coat using any water-based fence or deck stain. When oiling or staining, first ensure the panel is free of dirt and debris, then follow the manufacturer’s instructions to apply two coats of your choice of colour.

3. Paint them. Get creative and add colour to your screen! Use a low VOC water based exterior paint in a colour of your choice and paint with a brush, roller or spray gun. Before commencing, make sure the raw panel is free of dust & dirt, then follow the manufacturer’s directions.

Maintenance Regularly wash the painted or oiled surface with clean water to remove dirt and grime and to improve the performance of the coating. Generally, exterior surface coatings deteriorate by chalking rather than flaking. When repainting or oiling becomes necessary, wash down with water first and ensure the panel is completely dry before the new coat is applied. Remove all loose dirt and dust by sanding with a fine grit paper and dust off. Apply a minimum of two coats of paint/oil in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Cutting SmartScreen panels can be shaped by simply cutting the panel using a standard hand or power saw. Ideally, complete all cutting prior to installation. Fastening SmartScreen panels Use stainless steel screws or jolt head nails for a clean, fastener free look or if preferred, the panels can be glued to the frames and clamped until cured, using a high-grade builder’s adhesive such as Selley’s ‘Liquid Nails’. We recommend SmartScreen panels are secured to a frame or backing using screws at a minimum distance of 300mm apart around the perimeter of the panel, the fastenings being no less than 12mm from the edge of the panel. Touching up SmartScreen panels If your SmartScreen panel gets slightly chipped or scratched, this can be easily fixed simply by touching up with existing colour stain or paint. Natural product recommendations As a natural product, timber expands and contracts during different weather conditions. We recommend a gap of at least 2mm be allowed between panels to enable natural movement. Note: SmartScreen panels must be installed at a minimum height of 100mm from ground level. SmartScreen panels are NOT A STRUCTURAL PRODUCT and should not be used for load bearing, reinforcement or safety barriers. All installation should be on to an appropriate frame or backing.
