2.4 PositioningInstallation zone in a bathroom (under DIN VDE 0100-701)

The SmartFan X is designed for installation in a wall or ceiling. It is only to be used in Installation Zone 3.

Make sure there is sufficient free space around the fan. Ensure that airflow in the vicinity of the SmartFan X is not blocked. Do not install the fan in a location where the temperature can exceed 40°C. The device must not be operated in the vicinity of combustible materials, fluids or gases.

Ceiling installationTo prevent condensation water entering the SmartFan X when instal-led in a ceiling, a condensate trap* (size DN 110) must be installed in the fan‘s vertical vent pipe.

Please make sure that the fan wheel can turn without hindrance and that, when flexible hoses are used, the outlet nozzle is not too tight.

Lift the lustre terminal (4) out of the fan casing and press the two connector pins (3) at one end of the module into the lustre terminal (4). Tighten with a suitable screwdriver. Make sure that the connector wires are underneath the holding clip (5).Align the notch (1) in the terminal side (2) of the module with the positioning block of the fan casing. Press the module back into the fan casing, making sure that the lustre terminal (4) is above the two positioning pins.

Modules with pull cords: Make sure that the pull cord underneath the device sits properly in the cord slit.

Modules with motion sensors: Remove the oval lens located at the bottom of the fan‘s front cover. Replace this with the transpa-rent lens supplied with the motion sensor module.

The lens must be replaced, otherwise the motion sensor will not work properly. Make sure that the lens is correctly positioned, i.e., the front side of the lens must be flush with the surface of the cover.

3.3 Programming the modules

All installation and programming work must be carried out by a specialist.

Before opening a device or changing the settings, the fan must be disconnected from the mains. Modules with a delayed switch-off timer or a humidity sensor are supplied with pre-set settings. These may need to be changed. To prevent damage, please use the setting tools provided. Please note: when using a switch, the module‘s trigger may take time to react. This can influence the delayed switch-off time setting.

The lower the humidity level is set, the longer the fan will run. In certain cases, for example in new houses, the fan may run for a long time without stopping due to high humidity.

3.4 Connecting the main cable in the fan Insert the supplied protective sleeve into the cable input hole. Make a hole in the sleeve (without damaging the seal) through which the cables can be inserted. Connect the cable to the 3-pin connector, making sure that the supplied lustre terminal clamp is in place. Replace the front cover.

As the SmartFan X is a double-insulated electrical appliance (Protection Class II), the earth conductor is not used. The T-connector may only be connected at the same voltage as the I-connector. The installer bears responsibility for any faulty wiring.

4 Installation4.1 Making the hole in the wall

When installing the SmartFan X in a wall, a hole has to be core-drilled for the mounting tube with an outward gradient of 1-3%, allowing any condensate to drain off.

When installing the SmartFan X in a ceiling, a condensate trap must be used to prevent any condensate from flowing back.

4.2 Inserting the mounting tube

Measure the thickness of the wall. Should any plastering still need to be done, allow for plaster thickness when shortening the mounting tube. Shorten the mounting tube using a sabre saw in such a way that the mounting tube ends are flush with both inside and outside walls.Apply a suitable mounting adhesive/sealant (1) to the outside of the mounting tube and insert it into the core-drilled hole (2). Pay attention to the drying time of the adhesive/sealant used.

When using a foam sealant, make sure that it is not so expandable that it deforms the mounting tube.

4.3 Cabling

Lay the power cable to the hole in the wall/ceiling for the mounting tube. To connect the cable

without problems, it should be laid up to the top left (10 o‘clock position) side of the hole.

Insert the plastering cover into the mounting tube to protect it from any dirt caused by possible finishing work.

4.4 Removing the cover

Remove the SmartFan‘s front cover by unscrewing the screw at the bottom end (1). The cover has a bayonet catch. To remove it, turn it slightly anti-clockwise (2).

4.5 Installing the fan

Align the fan so that it sits straight, with both screw-holes in a horizontal line. The fan can be fixed to the wall/ceiling using the supplied rawlplugs and screws. Carry out the cabling as described (see Electrical Installation).

Optional: Install and programme the optional humidity or timer module (see Electrical Installation)

4.6 Replacing the cover

Replace the cover on the fan. To prevent the clip snapping off, first open the iris and then insert the diaphragm into the guide lugs. Turn the cover clockwise until it snaps into position (1) and reinsert and tighten the screw (2).

EN 16

5 Operating the systemWhen the SmartFan X is switched on, it takes about 45 seconds before the iris diaphragm opens. When it is switched off, the motor stops and, about 25 seconds later, the iris diaphragm shuts. The reaction speed of the iris diaphragm is due to technical reasons and completely normal.

5.1 Use of control modulesWhen connected to a control module, the SmartFan X switches on when:• the motion sensor registers that a person is in the room;• the humidity sensor registers that the set humidity level for the room is exceeded;• 230 volts reach the „T“ trigger (see Cabling and wiring [A]).

When connected to a control module, the SmartFan X switches off when:• the motion sensor registers that nobody is in the room;• the humidity sensor registers that the humidity level is lower than the set level;• the set time has passed;• 230 volts are no longer reaching the „T“ trigger (see Cabling and wiring [A]).

6 TroubleshootingShould the SmartFan X not work properly after taking the following measures, please contact the installer.

Fault What is to be done

The device is not functioning at all.

Check that the device has been properly wired. Also check the fuse. Check that the module is functioning.

The fan motor does not start.Check that the fan wheel can move freely. In most cases, all you have to do is to clean the wheel and the surrounding area.

The fan does not switch off.Check that the module's "T" connection no longer has power. Wait for the switch-off delay period to end. Check that none of the sensors are reacting.

The fan motor is running at half-speed.

Check that the fan wheel can move freely. In most cases, all you have to do is to clean the wheel and the surrounding area. Check that the module is functioning.

The fan is making loud noises or vibrating.

Avoid installing the fan in drylined walls, as these act like a membrane, intensifying the smallest vibration. Check the fan wheel for damage or imbalance. In certain cases, all you have to do is to press your thumb gently against the wheel to correct any imbalance.

The fan diaphragm does not open/shut immediately.

The SmartFan X diaphragm takes about 45 secs. to open and about 25 secs. to shut.

The fan diaphragm does not open.

Check that the iris diaphragm has been properly as-sembled. Make sure that the blades have been properly inserted. Where necessary, replace the clip (part of the accessories package). Check whether anything is blocking the mechanism.

The fan diaphragm does not shut.

Check whether anything is blocking the mechanism. Make sure that the spring is properly mounted. The movable parts of the iris diaphragm must be clean.

EN 18

7 Maintenance

Always disconnect the fan from the mains before removing the cover.

To ensure the device‘s long-term functioning and to maintain the warranty, we recommend cleaning the fan once a year. Accumulations of dirt on the fan wheel and the inside of the fan will cause the motor to overheat. The iris diaphragm may be cleaned with a damp cloth. Never use abrasive cleaners. The inner components, e.g. the fan wheel, should be cleaned with a soft brush.

Make sure that the fan has been disconnected from the mains before inserting a brush into the fan wheel channel.

Never try and clean the fan itself through immersing it in water or putting it in the dishwasher. The only things you can put in the dishwasher are the blades of the iris diaphragm.
