1. Introducing SMART Play

1.1. What is SMART Play SMART Play is a playout/ingest control system for Grass Valley’s Media Servers. It can use AMP protocol over TPC/IP or RS-422.

Profile Video Server

K2

M-Series iVDR

Media Servers

Turbo With SMART Play, users can start a crash ingest or a VTR ingest from a workstation that is on the same network with the iVDR. SMART Play’s ingest plug-in will control the VTR via RS-422 and Video Server with AMP (either over IP or RS-422). The playout plug-in of SMART Play allows the play out of a single clip or a playlist. Users can decide to play-out back-to-back or stop at the last frame of each clip. Loop mode is available for both single clip or for a part of a play-list. With the flexible configuration tool of SMART Play users can choose to control any of the channels of the iVDR from one single workstation. This manual shows you how to install, configure, and use SMART Play effectively.

- 8 -

Page 9: SMART Play USER’S GUIDE

Port Control:

Each server port defined under SMART Play panels is represented with a port control. These port controls act as major information screen. Also by using the VTR-like controls, users can control media server’s player or recorder ports manually. Asset Pool: The SSDB Asset pool shows clips/placeholders inside a media server and predefined events on the playout application. It can sort and filter clips by their durations, names, track, status, compression type, media type, etc. It gets clips from the SSDB Service so when a SMART Play deletes a clip or creates a placeholder every SMART Play using the same SSDB shows the change in real-time. The Control Asset pool shows pre-defined events (for example GPI events). These events can be added to playlists, and triggered automatically when their place in playlist comes. SSDB Server and GPI box triggers can be configured from Settings button. 1.4.2. Other Components: Smart Suite Database Service Smart Suite Database (SSDB) Service controls MS SQL server and holds all media information in database. SMART Play clients may be connected to SSDB for some extra features like placeholders and any number of extra metadata fields on asset pool. It notifies everyone connected to it when a media in database is updated, removed or created; improving network performance when there are multiple SMART Play clients.

- 9 -

Page 10: SMART Play USER’S GUIDE

Smart Suite Watch Dog Service The WD service searches for media changes in Media Servers and SSDB services. When it detects new media in Media Server or detects deleted media in SSDB, it synchronizes Media Server and SSDB. Smart Suite MOS Gateway Service The MOS Gateway Service is the MOS translator of all other Smart Suite applications. When it’s connected to SMART Play, SMART Play can get Run Downs from any News Room Computer System on the other side of the MOS Gateway.

2. Using SMART Play

2.1. Using Recorder Plugins Video servers generally have two options for ingesting media: recording media directly into video server or transferring clips through the network. In both cases SMART Play can sense ongoing ingest/transfer operation and displays the new clip as under construction and its duration changes dynamically. Under construction clips are colored as pink on asset pool.

SMART Play has two different recorder plugins, Crash Record plugin and VTR Sync Record plugin. Record using Crash Record Plugin: The Crash Record plugin is a recorder plugin dedicated to ingest media manually from any source input into the video server.

In order to start a record, first you have to create an empty clip. To create a clip you have to select the target Bin and fill the clip name. You can also use “<” button to create a clip name based on a predetermined pattern on settings. You can also enter extra metadata before creating a clip. When you press “Create Clip” button, an empty clip will be created and cued into port for record. When the target clip is ready, you can start recording by pressing the red record button. You can stop recording using the stop or eject button on the Port Control.

Auto subclip function at the end of the plugin is disabled by default. You can use this function to automatically create a new subclip from the original record on desired time intervals. It also has a selection for target Bin, or uses the same bin as the source clip.

- 11 -

Page 12: SMART Play USER’S GUIDE

VTR Sync Record Plugin: The VTR Sync Record plugin is a recorder plugin dedicated to ingest media automatically only from video tape recorders (also other devices acts as VTR) into the video server. It

needs an RS422 com port on the client PC in order to work. The RS422 port is used for connecting VTR to SMART Play client. In order to start a record, you have to select target Bin and fill the clip name. You can also enter extra metadata. Then you have to select target VTR device from VTR Control. Then you can enter in and out timecodes to the respective fields and start the record using “INGEST” button. When you start record, media between in and out point of the VTR is automatically recorded to the video server. Record operation stops when timecode reaches out point or you can manually stop record using “ABORT” button. You can use the “=>” buttons near the in and out point to preroll VTR to in or out point. VTR Control can also control any device that supports BVW protocol.

- 12 -

Page 13: SMART Play USER’S GUIDE

2.2. Using Asset Pool

All media and events are stored in the Asset Pool. Any media that is transferred into video server also drops into the media asset pool. The Asset Pool contains all media information about the clips and also extra metadata information if it’s connected to the SSDB. You can sort this list by the name, length, creation date and media track counts or even by extra metadata fields.

The “Refresh” button on the Asset Pool resynchronizes all media, getting all information again. The “Delete” button on the Asset Pool deletes selected media clips after asking for confirmation. New Pool opens a new floating Asset Pool.

- 13 -

Page 14: SMART Play USER’S GUIDE

Asset Pool is a useful tool to manage and edit the media in the video server. By using its filter options you can find any media with ease. On the screenshot below you can see the user is searching for “1179” and SSDB is filtering the Bin so only clips whose name contains “1179” can be seen.

After selecting a clip by left clicking on the clip, you can open the context menu using right mouse button. You can manage and edit your media using this menu.

- 14 -

Page 15: SMART Play USER’S GUIDE

The context menu which opens when you right click on any media in the Asset Pool contains useful functions for managing and editing your clips

• Rename: Rename selection changes the name of the selectedclip.

• Move: Move selection moves the selected clip into the target

Bin.

• Copy: Copy selection copies the selected clip into the target

Subclip: Subclip selection copies only the media between the in and out points o

- 15 -

Page 16: SMART Play USER’S GUIDE

• Properties: The “Properties”

selection shows the properties of the selected media. On the properties window, you can see all of the media properties as well as extra metadata entered before. You can also change or add a new metadata.

Deleting media: In order to delete media’s from your video server you have to use the “Delete” button at the top of the Asset Pool. It will ask for a confirmation and delete all clips listed in the confirmation window if you click on “Yes”.

- 16 -

Page 17: SMART Play USER’S GUIDE

2.3. Using Playlists

SMART Play has two player plugins, both with different abilities. But playlist operations covered in this section are the same on both of the plugins. Adding and Removing Media and Events into Playlists: All media and events in the Asset Pool can be added into playlists using drag and drop action.

If you wish to use the keyboard for these operations you can use the asset finder. You can access the asset finder when you click the “Insert” key on the keyboard. Using asset finder you can filter, select and add clips by only using your keyboard. “Esc” key on the keyboard closes the Asset Finder.

- 17 -

Page 18: SMART Play USER’S GUIDE

In order to remove unnecessary media or events from your playlist you can use the “Delete” button on the plugin after selecting one or more clips. Selected clips will be removed only from the playlist. You can’t use “Delete” function on a clip that is on-air.

If you want delete all items, you can use “Clear” function on the right click context menu, which will clear items on the playlists. “Clear” function will ask for a confirmation before clearing all items on the playlist. You can’t use “Clear” function while the some of the clips on the playlist are on-air. Saving and Loading Playlists: You can save your playlists and use them later by loading them on the same SMART Play client or a different client. You can access the save dialog by opening the right click context menu.

There are two different load options available; the first one is “Load” which will clear the current playlist and load the selected playlist. “Insert”, however, will not clear the playlist, but will insert the selected playlist over the selected clip. If there is no selection on the playlist, the “Insert” function will insert the selected playlist at the end of the current playlist.

- 18 -

Page 19: SMART Play USER’S GUIDE

Importing external playlists: Playlist files generated by other scheduling systems can be also opened in SMART Play. SMART Play has a generic import system, and new import settings can easily be created by editing sample import files. New import types can be added to the context menu by editing the necessary fields of the import file inside SMART Play folder.

- 19 -

Page 20: SMART Play USER’S GUIDE

2.4. Using Player Plugins

Back to Back Playlist Plugin: The Back to Back Playlist Plugin is designed for the needs of a Master Control Room and it works as an automated playout. It can import playlists created in external scheduling systems and play them in a back to back order automatically. Editing items in a playlist: • You can change a clip’s in and out timecodes by selecting it on the playlist and right clicking to open context menu >> Properties. Note that you can’t do this operation on events that are on-air.

• You can also split a clip into two parts using the “Create Splice Point” button. When you use this button the selected clip will be split into two parts at the target timecode shown above the button.

- 20 -

Page 21: SMART Play USER’S GUIDE

• You can change an event’s start type (sequential or time event) or end type (back-to-back or freeze on last frame) by right clicking to open context menu >> Start Event or End Event. This operation also cannot be done on events that are on-air. Cueing and Playing Clips You can cue a playlist using the “Cue” button. If the starting media is a time event, it will start when its start timecode comes. If the starting media is a sequential event then it will start immediately when you press the “Play” button.

When a clip finishes its playout, SMART Play checks for that its end event and does the necessary actions: • If the finished media’s end event is “back-to-back” and the next media is “time event” then playlist will continue with next media unless there is some time before its start timecode. Then SMART Play automatically fills that time with black output. • If the finished media’s end event is “freeze on last frame” and then playlist will stop at the last frame of the current playing media. • If the finished media’s end event is “back-to-back” and the next media is “sequential event” then the playlist will continue with the next media once the current playing media finishes. • If the finished media’s end event is “freeze on last frame” and the next media is a “sequential event” then playlist will stop at the last frame of the current playing media. Clips with durations less than 6 seconds are chained with next media for frame accuracy reasons.

- 21 -

Page 22: SMART Play USER’S GUIDE

While a playlist is currently cued and playing, you can edit that playlist or insert a playlist at the end of current playlist. Additional features: You can find information about additional features and functions about the Back to Back Playlist Plugin at section 3.2.

- 22 -

Page 23: SMART Play USER’S GUIDE

A/B Multiport Plugin: The A/B Multiport Plugin is designed for the needs of a studio and is generally used in news studios for manual playout. The A/B Multiport Plugin can import external playlists as well as get NCRS Rundowns over MOS Gateway. The A/B Multiport Plugin can have more than one player port with one playlist for ease of preview and playlist make-up. When you add video server ports to the Multiport Panel, they will be enumerated alphabetically. Default installations usually have 2 ports but this can be increased or decreased from settings. Creating and editing stories: • You can manually create a playlist by simply dragging and dropping media items (clips or placeholders) from the asset pool panel to A/B’s playlist. You can create new stories when your cursor becomes a red arrow pointing left:

You can add media into an existing story when your cursor becomes a red arrow pointing up or down: If the cursor is pointing down, the media will be added to the start of that story.

If the cursor is pointing up, the media will be added to the end of that story.

- 23 -

Page 24: SMART Play USER’S GUIDE

If there is no arrow near your cursor then the media will be added to the exact location of your mouse cursor on the story. You can change the mouse cursor by moving it over playlist stories.

• You can change the order of clips by dragging a clip from one place to another in the playlist. This can’t be done on cued clips.

Saving: As explained in section 2.3, you can save your playlists by right clicking in the playlist panel and selecting playlist >> Save on the right click context menu.

- 24 -

Page 25: SMART Play USER’S GUIDE

Opening Rundowns over MOS Gateway The A/B Multiport plugin can also select a Rundown from MOS Gateway to link SMART Play with a Newsroom Computer System. In order to do this, right click on the playlist of the A/B Multiport panel and select the “Select RO” under “RO Control”.

After this selection a new dialog will be appear and show all available Running Orders (Rundowns). In the new dialog select the Rundown you want to use and click the select button.

- 26 -

Page 27: SMART Play USER’S GUIDE

Cueing and Playing Clips Unlike the Back to Back Playlist Plugin, the A/B plugin has a “Cue” button for every item in the playlist. This allows a very fast manual control of the playlist. When a clip is cued, “Next”, “Eject” and “Play” button is created for it. Pressing the “Play” button will start playing the clip immediately. When the clip reaches its end, it will trigger the end event defined in the settings (check section 3.3 for more details).

You can eject the clip by pressing the “Eject” button on the item or using the “Next” button, which will both eject the clip and cue the next unused clip. Used clips are marked as “Played” and cannot be cued again unless their “Played” status is removed using “Unmark Played” selection on the right click context menu.

Additional features: You can find information about additional features and functions about A/B Multiport Plugin in section 3.3.
