Is Changing the Way the Supply Chain Thinks about Asset Tracking, Monitoring and Remote Management

On Land, Sea and Rail

State of container tracking industry

•  Less than 1 % adoption on a global fleet of 20 million currently, but rapid growth expected in the next few years. Refrigerated and tank containers to adopt first

•  Ocean shipping is the last transportation sector to modernize and adopt asset level tracking technology

•  Hardware and the technology have finally reached a stage where it is affordable enough to provide robust return on investment. Point of manufacture installation integration is now a reality

Why would there be an increase in adoption?

•  Shippers demanding more real time data, and sensor data on environmental conditions during transport for them and their customers.

•  Need to address the 30% losses of perishable product in the shipping process.

•  Requirement of audit trial data for regulatory compliance from governmental agencies. U.S.A FDA Leading the way

Economical Drivers of demand

•  Population to reach 9 billion by 2050

•  Goldman Sachs is reporting a deficit in Chicken by 2023 in China, India, Middle East, Africa and Europe and even in parts of Latin America. Asia and Russia are going to be in deficit of all the meats including beef and Pork by 2023.

•  Increase in income levels in developing economies such as China driving demand for fresh fruits

•  Food contamination across the global supply chain

Growth of the Refrigerated Container Sector •  Global Reefer volume growth projected at 4.5% •  Perishable growth of 3.3% per year for last 10 years •  Reefer fleet exceeds 2.2 million TEUs this year •  Conventional reefer vessels continue to decline

Leading to increased containerized reefer shipping – 39 scrapped in 2011 – 74 scrapped in 2012 Leading to an increase in containerized reefer shipping

Growth of Tank Container Sector •  The increase in the global demand for air conditioning

and refrigeration systems due to growing economies mature and their citizens see an increase in personal wealth

•  The development of a number of “blends” and new CFC-friendly refrigerant gases

Growth of Tank Container Sector

•  Better solutions for the tanks such as zinc lining no need to filter rust before delivering the product •  Lighter weight containers now carry more payload •  New cryogenic tank containers that have increased

the transit life from 40-60 days

What will the Smart reefer look like by next year?

Shipping Challenges for perishables

•  Alarms go unchecked until its too late – Real time alarms- push signals

•  Improper set points entered – Remote control of settings

•  Unauthorized door breaches during transit – Real time eSeal alarms

•  Low O2 and High Co2 leads to damaged fruit – Automated ventilation settings - C02 in-cargo sensor - CO2 scrubber

•  Damaged fruit ripens faster – Tilt, shock sensor

Logistics/Supply chain efficiencies with the technology

•  Real time alerting allows interventions and reduces claims but more importantly saves product - no loss of shipment

•  Complete container visibility allows for more efficient repositioning and identification of container dwell locations

•  Condition monitoring allows to identify if fruit are ripening faster as they show minute spikes in temperature, determines speed to market required to have a longer shelf life or adjustments in temperature or environmental settings

Logistics/Supply chain efficiencies with the technology

•  Reduce terminal moves because you can repurpose a container on demand and while it is in transit-better customer service

•  USDA clearance times can be reduced through automation

•  Real time inventories on ocean for a more efficient supply chain

•  Full end to end global supply chain connectivity

Adoption Trends

•  Refrigerated Containers temperature and location plus alarm conditions during transit.

•  Tank containers – Some as simple as location but newer trends point to sensor alarm monitoring such as liquid level, Pressure, Temperature both of the liquid and ambient.

•  Dry/Intermodal Containers – high value, high risk Temperature, Humidity, Light, door seals and internal radar
