In one recent project, BD needed to efficiently increase its process cooling capacity. BD worked with an engineering firm, hired by Rocky Mountain Power, on an energy analysis. This study identified upgrade opportunities to meet capacity targets and save energy. Rocky Mountain Power provided financial incentives based on the energy savings to help pay for the project.

“As a result, our chiller that we thought was too small and needed to be replaced is now running at 50 to 75 percent capacity,” said Eric Wells,BD’s senior facilities engineer in Sandy.

SavingsBD’s energy efficiency projects in Sandy are saving 10.4 million kilowatt-hours of electricity each year. These electricity savings translate into $580,650 in annual energy cost savings. BD received a total of nearly $713,000 in Rocky Mountain Power incentives to help offset the cost of these improvements, reducing the overall simple payback of the projects from 3.2 years to 2 years.

Environmental commitmentBD Medical’s company motto is “To Help All People Live Healthy Lives.” In keeping with this belief, the company looks for continuous improvement processes directly related to environmental concerns. The wattsmart Business projects BD has completed help them meet ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certification standards. By reducing electrical consumption, the company is able to reduce the impact on the environment, since less electricity is generated to meet their needs.

BD goes even further by supporting renewable energy through the Blue SkySM program. BD was able to commit to a Blue Sky purchase equal to 100 percent of their energy usage because of the energy savings they realized from participating in Rocky Mountain Power’s energy efficiency programs.
