Dear Friends of the Cleveland Cultural Gardens Federation,

As Co-Chairs of the One World Day Planning Committee, we welcome you to the Federation’s 71st One World Day! We will also mark the close of our Centennial year and embark on our second century by breaking ground for the Gardens’ Centennial Plaza! We are thrilled and appreciative of your joining in the celebration of this cultural treasure of Cleveland. The Gardens are a place where you can join family and friends (and make new friends) in experiencing the breadth and depth of the cultural richness and diversity of Cleveland and Northeast Ohio as you walk through the Gardens, view the Parade, and welcome the newest American Citizens at our Naturalization Ceremony! So there is much to enjoy and celebrate in the Gardens where you will feel a part of kits Mission of Peace through a mutual Understanding!

If this is your fi rst time in the Gardens, a hearty welcome!! We know that you will enjoy the experience and will want to come back! If you have visited or celebrated with us in the past, welcome back! For all, we hope that you will visit our website www.clevelandculturalgardens.org where you can learn more about the Gardens as well as support the Federation by becoming a Friend of the Gardens.

Enjoy the day!!

Thank you!

Exhibitors List by GardensEach Garden will have a variety of activities throughout the day which may include performances, cultural and educational display, ethnic food, ethnic pastries, beverages and others. In addition, several market places available for additional vendors listed below. Subject to change.

It’s a match made in… Cleveland! When the Cleveland Cultural Gardens Federation wanted to have an extra special headliner to celebrate the Centennial Year of the Gardens at One World Day there was one name that jumped out – Michael Stanley.

Though he has had regional and national success, Cleveland native Michael Stanley will always be associated with his hometown, and not just when performing his Top 40 hit “My Town”.

Michael Stanley Gee started as a bass player for the band Silk in the late 60’s. The singer/songwriter/ guitarist then went solo for a few albums with the likes of legendary producer Bill Szymczyk and guest musicians Joe Walsh, Todd Rundgren, and David Sanborn.

It all came together when he formed the Michael Stanley Band (aka MSB) in 1975 and pursued a more straightforward rock direction. MSB’s live shows at the Cleveland Agora became the soundtrack for the 2-album set ‘Stagepass’ with hits Midwest Midnight, Strike up the Band and more. MSB recorded a string of albums through the late ‘70s and early ‘80s that were modest successes nationally but major hits in Ohio. In fact, the Michael Stanley Band was such a sensation at home that it still holds attendance records at major concert venues such as Blossom and the Richfi eld Coliseum.

“He Can’t Love You” (sung by vocalist/keyboardist Kevin Raleigh) became MSB’s biggest hit and came off their album Heartland . “Lover” (sung by Stanley and featuring blistering saxophone by Clarence Clemons) became a concert favorite with the crowd routinely taking over the singing chores on several lines.

The 1983 Top 40 hit “My Town” became an anthem. Many cities and teams, including the Cleveland Indians, adopted the anthem but when Michael sings “This town is my town” and pauses, the crowds know to shout ‘Cleveland!”

Michael Stanley became a popular television and radio personality in Cleveland. He still regularly releases albums -- solo and with group projects such as the Resonators and Ghost Poets. He performs special New Year’s Eve and other shows along with occasional acoustic dates with MSB alumni and other Cleveland musicians. Razor & Tie has reissued most of MSB’s catalog and two excellent best-of collections on compact disc.

Michael Stanley’s honest , Midwestern rock & roll is custom made for Cleveland and will be a perfect fi t for Cleveland’s unique treasure, the Cleveland Cultural Gardens. As Michael says, “Let’s get the show on the road.”

About the Cleveland Cultural GardensWritten by Dan Hanson

The Cleveland Cultural Gardens are part of Rockefeller Park which consists of land donated by John D. Rockefeller on Cleveland’s Centennial celebration in 1896.

In 1916, a journalist and Shakespeare enthusiast named Leo Weidenthal helped establish the Shakespeare Garden which later became the British Garden. Weidenthal saw the multiplicity of nationalities that were in or coming to Cleveland and had a vision of using this City of Cleveland land as a tribute to them.

The second garden was the Hebrew Garden and it was dedicated in 1926. Later in the 1920’s and 30’s other nationalities began working on gardens to represent their own heritage. After the Great Depression, much of the infrastructure was installed with the assistance of the WPA (Work Projects Administration) including bridges and retaining walls.

The history and growth of the Cultural Gardens is a mirror of the history and growth of Cleveland. The early gardens were predominantly European (Italian, German, Czech, Polish, Hungarian, Irish, Slovak, etc.) because that’s who had been settling in Cleveland. World events in uenced the Gardens. When Yugoslavia split, so did the Yugoslav Garden into Slovenian, Croatian and Serbian Gardens. With the fall of the Soviet Union came Latvian and Estonian Gardens joining the Lithuanian Garden. As people from other areas came to Cleveland, interest in gardens for their heritage grew and new and proposed gardens focus on the Middle East, Asia and Africa. There is renewed interest and e ort to complete African American and Native American Gardens. Soon there will be 35 or so gardens representing many of the diverse nationalities that make Cleveland home.

Because of the Cultural Gardens, Cleveland is the only street in the world with a large statue of Mahatma Gandhi on a street named for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Not to mention the statue of Mother Teresa at the other end of the road. Nowhere else can you nd scientists like Copernicus, Tesla and Madame Curie mingled with composers such as Bach, Liszt, Chopin and Beethoven.

The Cleveland Cultural Gardens Federation is the group of volunteers who have created, maintained and improved the Gardens over the years. They have given

their time, talent and treasure to build gardens, raise funds for monuments and do the mundane but necessary tasks like weeding and planting owers – all for the love of their heritage and their City.

Please join us as we celebrate 100 years of this unique treasure. Learn more at clevelandculturalgardens.org.

About the Centennial CelebrationAlong with many other Cleveland institutions, the Cleveland Cultural Gardens is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2016. This string of 29, and growing, unique nationality gardens on over 200 acres along MLK Blvd. is dedicated to peace and understanding through each nationality sharing its achievements and contributions to the betterment of society. Within the gardens are numerous depictions of signifi cant personalities in the pursuit of peace; Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Confucius, music; Liszt,

Beethoven, literature; William Shakespeare, James Joyce, Mark Twain, and sciences; Nikola Tesla, Leonardo DaVinci, Madame Currie among many others. It is through this recognition of each culture’s contributions that the true understanding among people can take place.

To celebrate this milestone, we, the Federation that governs the gardens, are kicking off our Centennial Campaign to raise an initial $750,000. Our long term goals are to create an ongoing Endowment Fund to help maintain and grow the gardens for the next hundred years. The funds will be used for restoration, improvements, and to focus on the mission of the gardens, Peace Through Mutual Understanding. The focal part of this legacy project will be the construction of a Centennial Plaza to be located in the midway point of the gardens. It will feature a large open plaza for performances and gatherings, a fountain derived from our logo which depicts a sphere being held up by hands which also closely resembles fl owers. The plans also call for recognition of donors where the names of those who supported us in our mission will be honored.

In addition, We began the Centennial Year celebration with a sold-out gala event on April 8, 2016 which included greetings and congratulations sent from President Obama. This was followed by many special events and concerts in numerous gardens. The culmination of the Centennial is One World Day on August 28th, an annual event held continuously for over 70 years. This special year allows for a variety of ways you can become involved helping our

mission.

We are a 501 c (3) nonprofi t organization run entirely by volunteers for its entire history. All your donations are tax deductible. Your investment in this community treasure will help endow a legacy.

Please lend your fi nancial support to this cultural institution unique to the world. For more information, please visit www.ClevelandCulturalGardens.org
