Hand Crafted For the Weather
In the North we know wet, cold, and are on a 1st name basis with Snow, and when it snows it really
snows... heavy and wet. Our dwellings are designed for local snow loads and the large front overhang willkeep you out of the rain and snow while you put down your umbrella to open the door. Or you can pull out
a chair and sit under cover, breathe the fresh air and think about spring...
We also like sleeping at night! Our tiny houses are built to the same specifications we used as a custom
home builder over the years.
The small cabin has long been admired and romanticized. Where else would Presidents be born? What
could be a more perfect love nest? A romantic hideaway?
Could there be a better setting for quiet contemplation? To think great thoughts?
Where would Thoreau be without Thoreaus cabin? Could there be a simple life without a simple
structure?
Peace, tranquility, freedom from the mortgage is yours with aTiny Green Cabin.

Teachers lil House
By Daniel Woods
Williston Herald
GRASSY BUTTE Jessica Bolt bought a tiny, green cabin. It sounds like the first line in a childrensbook, but its actually a lesser- known, higher-tech housing option.
Bolt is a student performance strategist in Killdeer. Shes a kind of special forces teacher who tries to dowhat other teachers havent been able to do, teach kids who have had trouble learning for various reasons. Its a loaded job title, but it doesnt come with a pay increase over other teachers. And, like many in westernNorth Dakota, teachers are dealing with exorbitant costs in housing.
Wildflower II in Grassy Butte
Bolt said she started thinking about a house like this about five years ago, then, more recently, she beganresearching small, energy-saving houses and finally bought one from Tiny Green Cabins, a company owned
by Jim Wilkins in White Bear Lake, Minn.
If its built in the north, Bolt said, thats better than something built in California or Texas where theydont know what 40 below is like.
Essentially, this is a very small house built on wheels.
Its road-worthy. Its a trailer.
But it looks like a house, feels like a house and has all the amenities of a house, from a full-size sink andshower to a washer and dryer.
It has an incinerating toilet which burns waste into dry, sterile ash.
Bolt said payments for her tiny cabin are less than what she had been paying to rent an apartment, and, in afew years it will be paid off.
Ill never have to pack a U-haul again, she said.

The cabin was delivered Thursday night from Minnesota to the lot she purchased in Grassy Butte, a smalltown south of Watford City.
There has been some chatter in Grassy Butte about the new house. Don Trotter, owner of the BeicegelStation, the towns only gas station and convenience store said he had heard a couple rumors about it, butnothing very specific. Trotter said the town used to have three gas stations and a cafe when the highwaywent through, but, when the highway was moved a short distance east, the town started to shrink. Untilrecently, he said, people have been moving out rather than moving in.
The model Bolt bought is 196 square foot, 8 feet by 20 feet, including a loft. The original design had aladder built into a closet, but she had hers made with a stair case, and each stair contains a drawer. Thewhole interior is covered in approximately 3-inch-wide white ash boards, floor to peaked ceiling, interspersed with lighting fixtures and windows, including skylights to let in daylight.
I grew up with hardwood floors, Bolt said. Im kind of attached to them. You can run your hand overthem and they are so smooth.
For now, the interior is fairly bare, but she said she has picked out a spot on the wall to hang her ukulele.
The only problem now, she said, is finding someone to hook up her electrical and water lines.
Tiny Home, Tiny Footprint
by Kristine Goodrich/Editor | Posted: Tuesday, July 3, 2012 3:45 pm
WHITE BEAR TOWNSHIP Theyre on wheels and not much larger than a camper.
But with a lofted bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and even a front porch, Jim Wilkinsrolling residenceshaveall the elements of a traditional home all cozied into less than 350 square feet.
After decades working in the construction industry, the White Bear Township entrepreneur now designs and custom
builds miniature environmentally-friendly homes in his backyard workshop. He aptly calls his business Tiny GreenCabins.
Wilkins cabins provide a unique but expensive option for eco-minded cross-country travelers, city-dwellersseeking a cabin get-away, young adults looking for a portable first home and retirees wanting to downsize.
While miniature homes are gaining popularity, especially on the coasts, Wilkins says he is the only suchhome builder in Minnesota. Hes one of only a handful of independent designer/builders who will take thetime to listen and custom-build each home to best fit its future owner, he said. He says hes also the onlysuch builder in the country offering what he calls nontoxic homes.

All his homes are made mostly with local natural and recycled materials. The nontoxic homes avoid anychemicals or allergen-causing natural materials.
Wilkins has designed 11 models and is working on several more. The smallest is just 19 feet long and 8 feetwide with a petite kitchen, bathroom, living room and closet on the main floor, plus a lofted sleeping area anda covered porch. At 333 square feet, the largest model adds a main-floor bedroom, room for multiple sleepersin the loft, and a fold-out deck. Prices have ranged from $26,000 to $80,000.
The tiny cabins all have electricity and water hookups. Toilets can be connected to a sewer system, or anincinerator or composting system can be installed.
The interiors have all-wood paneling and floors and feature creative storage spaces such as stairs that doubleas drawers.
The cabins are well-insulated, according to Wilkins (some use insulation made from recycled blue jeans) andseveral heating and cooling options are available.
One of his cabin buyers uses it as an arts studio adjacent to his Denver home. All his other buyers use them astheir primary residence, including a North Dakota teacher who had had difficulty finding housing due to theoil boom, and most recently a graduate student in Boston who is now living in one in a relatives yard. AWisconsin furniture maker with extreme environmental allergies resides in a custom cabin that includes adecontamination chamber between the entrance and living quarters.
Wilkins cautioned that his cabins wouldnt meet minimum size requirements for permanent primaryresidences in most communities; most users have licensed them as RVs or accessory buildings.
All the cabins can be pulled behind a pickup and are within road load limit maximums.
Wilkins lived in his smallest model cabin for nearly a year. The divorcee gave his main house to one of hissons and his family. Instead of moving into the guest house where he lives now, the elder Wilkins lived in acabin on his township property until he sold the cabin.
Someone issued me a challenge that if youre going to sell small houses you should live in one, he said. And it was a great learning experience because it gave me an idea of where to change things.
Wilkins started his business in 2008 after being laid off from his job as a construction estimator. The earlymonths in the business were the most challenging, because he was dumping money into it before gettinganything out of it, he said. He was also set back by a broken ankle, but used the recovery time to develop avoluminous website. All of his customers have found him via the Web, he said.
He was blessed, he said, to have steady work for the past few years. During the busiest of times, two of hissons helped with cabin construction.
He currently has no orders, but hes starting work on his most popular cabin, and based on the number ofinquiries hes received, he said hes pretty confident hell find a buyer.
Wilkins also sells plans and holds workshops for people planning to build their own small home. He noteddo-it-your-selfers need to be well-educated because many building materials, even natural ones, give offemissions that can be harmful in confined spaces.

Tiny House, Steel or Wood
The steel frame of a tiny house is 30% lighter than a comparable wood frame, yet steel has morestrength than wood. Wood Tensile strength is rated at 40, while steel tensile strength is rated at 640and higher, making steel 17x stronger than wood.
Steel homes are usually screwed and bolted together, while wood homes are nailed and stapledtogether. A screws advantage is it does not loosen over time, while a nail will. AtTiny Green Cabins, besides screwing our steel framed tiny houses together, we also weld the connections for addedtensile strengths and resistance to loosening from road vibrations while in transit.
Virtually all of steel is from recycled materials and no trees are sawn down or harmed in making of thesteel frame.
One of the questions often asked is; which is less expensive? On a tiny house, wood is less expensivewith savings of approximately $200.00. For us at Tiny Green Cabins, we consider the bigger impact ofliabilities and other potential issues. To us, in viewing the bigger picture, steel is a wiser choice.
