TRE PURPOSE OF THIS FUBIZCATICIETs to present some basic designs of boats that aresimple to oonstruot, or use-in small-scale, on-industrial isheries. All the designsehown here are of the flat bottom type; that is: the bottom is flat when seen in thetransverse ireotion, hile lengthwise here is a slight ourvaturs. In the majority of ..the present esigns, the shape is simplified o the extent that the sides are built upwith parallel lanks and the rocker of the bottom is determined imply by the curvatureand the flare of the side planks, so no buildingjig s necessary.THE "fp"E OF CONSJ RUCTIONf flat bottom boats, because of the simple, straight-linedframes and the uncomplicated lanking, is considered o be their min~advantages, realizingalso '&at this normally akes them the least expensive f all planked wooden boats.THE WALLOW DRAUGHT s an important eature or many purposes ike navigation nshallow ivers and lakes or in swamp areas or close to the shore. For beach landingoperations, t means that the boat can be kept afloat until it actually touches he beach, and because of its flat bottom it rests firmly on the ground after hauling up.GOOD TRANSVERSE TABILITY hen compared ith round bilge or V-bottom boats with the

same weight and overall eam is another advantage f flat bottom boats. This means thatthey give a stable working platform for fishing perations.BIG FLOOR SPACE INSIDE THE BOAT is a valuable sset for oertain fishing operationslike gillnetting r pot fishing where a working osition standing ear the side is normal;this is another easily possible, avourable eature of the flat bottom boat configuration.THE ADAPMBILITY FOR SERIES PRODUCXON is high, utilib ng imple moulds and templates;series production s possible ith a small labour foroe. In one country in Africa, he

eystem of kit production n.a central place with good aooess to suitable imber, rdassembly n the different ishing villages, as been introduced ith great success.EXPERIENCED OATBUILDFRS re not necessary or the construction f flat bottom boats

THE IMPLEST ERSIONS of flat bottom boats have croes-laid ottom planke naileddirectly o the sidee, and the lower side planka on each side are increased n thicknessto take the nail6 without eplitting. The frames are mainlyneceesary to hold out thesides during construotion, eaauee the main transverse trengkh ornea from the aroas-laidbottomplanks.The bottom planks have to be held together y longitudinal ottomstiffeners, nd the side planks by vertical side stiffeners intermediate ide frames).A slight ending of the bottom planks when crossing aves can e tolerated s long as itdoes not affect watertightness. Except for MLW-6, which is built over a jig, when one oreeveral oate only are to be built the construction rocedure s as follows:

Seleot timber and fastenings ccording o specifications n drawings'. ( ee Chapters and 4 regarding election of timber nd fasten&e).2, Make templates or frame6 and transom.3. Prefabricate rames, transom and stem oomplete ith bevels.4. Join lower side planks to obtain the required length sing buttblocks on the inside. Mark position f all main frames andintermediate rames.5. Assemble the lower side planks, frames, tem and transom on theground or on a flat floor. When this is done the shape of ,th+ oatie given.6. Fasten side stiffeners o lower side planke and complete side planking.7. Turn the boat over, check the bevel on the lower side planks for aperfect fit with the bottom planks. Start planking he bottom fromthe stern, working toward the stem. Apply a strand of cotton and

bitumastic compound n the joint etween the sidea and the bottom. If the bottom planking is made of a timber that swells and shrinksconsiderably t is necessary to leave a gap, the thickness f ahacksaw blade between the planks. Never fit the bottom planks tight

THE MAIN QUALITIES ought(a) Rot resistance Rotfresh waterandthe timber

    3. SEXJXX?IONF TIMBERin a boatbuilding imber are:is the main enemy of wooden boats operating n tropicalshould e selected ith this in mind. The types oftimber with high natural esistance o rot are normally nown by the boatbuildersin the area but Forestry epartments ill also be able to give precise informationregarding urability f various local timbers.

High resistance o rot can also be achieved y pressurelimpregnationoftimbers, The local Forestry Department an give advice on which species ftimber would be suitable. Besides being easily treated y pressure-impregnationit must be relatively table, with good strength ualities nd not split easilywhen nailed or screwed.(h) Stability A timber that is not stable will shrink excessively hen itdries out and thereby open up the seams with resulting eaks. On the otherhand, if the same timber is dry when the boat is being built the bottom plankswill swell excessively fter being put into water causing reat strain on thefastenings nd making the planks buckle with consequent eaks along the chine. The tangential hrinkage hould preferably e below 4 percent when dried fromgreen to 15 percent humidity.of only 2 peroent The best hardwoods ave a tangential hrinkage- a boat built of such timber will, therefore, ave lessproblems ith le&kage ue to swelling nd shrinkage.(c) Good strenCth ualitiesof the strength. - The weight of the timber will give an indicationThe heavier the timber is the stronger t will be. A heavytimber will, therefore, ermit a slight eduction in planking hickness omparedwith a lighter timber.(d) Take nails and screws without splitting The problem of splitting hennailing he planks can partly be solved y preboring holes for the nails.Holes for screws must always be prebored.
