President’s Message:

I am writing this message more than two weeks before its scheduled publication date. I usually wait until the last moment to do this, prompting frantic reminders from Publishers Coriasco’s to get something in. Now Peter tells everyone that they are going out of town, so they need the articles in sooner than normal and the result is they received everything in time to publish the newsletter.

As I write this, it is the day of the dress rehearsal for the play Home Games. Kay DeGiorgi, Will Hockersmith and I have been rehearsing this for months along with Director Nancy King and Stage Manager Penny Larson. We are having guests arriving later this afternoon and they depart the day after the play, the same day that I leave on a 10 day motorcycle trip to Maine. So this is the only time I have to write this message. I will make several predictions now, and as you read this, you will know how accurate they are.

The play, Home Games, a Lake Players production, was a huge success. The sell-out crowds on two nights thoroughly enjoyed the production, as well as the hot dogs and baseball theme. The cast missed a few lines, but no one noticed because they covered so well. The cast received a rousing ovation at the play’s conclusion. Nancy King breathed a satisfied sigh of relief as the final curtain closed.

I decide to forego a professional acting career and continue as a part time spin instructor at the Y.

The Dynamic Musical Weekend, featuring David Wiley was a success, with crowds of music fans taking time from their busy holiday weekend to enjoy some outstanding music.

People are looking forward to the Hard Day’s Night concert at Dudley Elementary School on October 8th.

Planning is in full swing for the SMAC Annual Meeting, which will be held on October 19th at Resurrection Church. If you didn’t attend last year’s meeting, you don’t want to miss this.

Come hear two grand pianos, 176 keys dueling in harmony, as we kick off Labor Day weekend with some exciting piano fireworks. Favorites for two pianos include the Rachmaninoff Romance, Grieg Norwegian Dance, selections from Petrouchka, a Hungarian Dance and the Haydn Variations by Brahms, plus a memorable Gershwin Porgy and Bess Fantasy and piano music from Maestro Wiley's new score to our locally filmed "Lake Effects" movie starring Jane Seymour. If you like piano music, you will love this concert for dueling duo pianos. "Labors of Love: from Boheme to Bernstein" Sunday, September 4 - 3-5 PM concert, Trinity Ecumenical Church, Moneta Three vocal stars, Philip & Tara Bouknight and Leah Marer Wiley join Maestro David Stewart Wiley in an afternoon of favorites. Classics include duets from Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, Mozart's Don Giovanni & Marriage of Figaro, Bizet's Carmen, Copland's The Tender Land, Bernstein's Candide & West Side Story, and Puccini's La Boheme. Theater classics include beloved themes from Gone with the Wind, Rent, My Fair Lady, and many other expressions of Amore. Box 70, Moneta, VA 24121 (please include a self-addressed stamped envelope). Tickets will also be available at the SML Visitors Center and the General Store.

SMAC Concert: “A Hard Days Night” SMAC has contracted with the Beatles Tribute band, “A Hard Days Night,” to perform at 8:00 p.m. on October 8th, which is the Saturday of Home Tour weekend. The Special Events Committee felt this band would be a great “fit” to the demographic of the people visiting SML for the “Tour” as well as the majority of SMAC members and other SML residents. The concert will be at Dudley Elementary School, beginning at 8:00 p.m. (to give Tour volunteers and attendees time to relax and have dinner after their busy Saturday) and will be 90 minutes of straight music, no intermission, to keep the evening from getting too late. SMAC members will be able to buy advance tickets by mail during August and September for $17, which will also be the rate for those who show Home Tour tickets at the door. All others, including SMAC members, will pay $20 at the door. Buying tickets in advance will save you money and speed your entry to the concert. You can preview this very popular Beatles Tribute band at www.hdntheband.com. Check it out and then organize some friends and neighbors (a good way to recruit some new SMAC members, perhaps?) to join you for an evening of great music. Watch for advance ticket purchase details in the next SMAC Newsletter on September 1st.

Always...Patsy Cline opens Little Town Players 36th Season This heartwarming show is based on the true story of Patsy Cline's friendship with Houston housewife Louise Seger. Having first heard Patsy (Tammy Shockley) sing on the "Arthur Godfrey Morning Show" in 1957, Louise (Karen C. Hopkins), became an immediate and avid fan of Patsy's, constantly hounding the local disc jockey to play Patsy's records on the radio. In 1961 when Patsy went to Houston for a show, Louise and her friends attended and, by coincidence, met Patsy who was traveling alone. The two women struck up a friendship that was to culminate in Patsy spending the night at Louise's house - a friendship that lasted until Patsy's death in a plane crash in 1963. When Patsy left the next day for Dallas, the two women had exchanged addresses and telephone numbers. Louise never expected to hear from Patsy again, but soon received the first of many letters and phone calls from Patsy. The pen-pal relationship provides much of the plot of the show. Louise supplies the narrative while Patsy floats in and out of the set singing tunes that made her famous --- Anytime, Walkin After Midnight, She's Got You, Sweet Dreams, Craz, I Fall To Pieces and Faded Love--- to name a few. Always...Patsy Cline is directed by Jeff Krantz and stage managed by Melissa Kennedy. This show combines humor, sadness and reality --- A Must See !!!! Season tickets holders may begin calling for reservations on Friday, August 26, 2011. All other reservations begin Thursday, September 1, 2011. Please call the box office at 540-586-5881 or www.lynchburgtickets.com

Lake Players: “Home Games”: Take Me Out to the Ball Game

. A Huge Success !!

We've Come A Long Way Baby! Considering the Lake Players group was started 16 years ago this June with a "cold turkey" reading of several articles either from a Reader's Digest magazine, a poem or an article someone thought funny, we have come a long way. We sold out for two nights for "Home Games". The show was wonderfully funny and the acting minus books was absolutely perfect. Get it? They memorized the play! Does it get any better? The actors, Will Hockersmith, Kay DiGiorgi and Mike Dittrich, were just terrific in their parts. Nancy King did a super job as director as did Penny Larsen as stage manager. And throw in at the last minute Elda Nichols at the keyboard and you've got a perfect show. What a talented group! We hope to be able to do some more shows that are memorized but will also still do play readings for those of you that may worry that you will have to do acting without the books. Our next show will be in November, so be on the lookout to see what we have planned for you. Oh.... don't forget to come to the October 19th Annual Meeting, some surprises are in store for you then.
