ACTIVITIES 09

Well, well!!! Another year has come and YWAM and the Activities team are ready to provide you with a fun-filled festival!

Worship leaders

Born in Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland, Ryan started leading worship in the local Elim church, where he was one of the resident worship leaders for the past 8 years. It is this link with Elim that led Ryan to be one of the key and influential lead worshippers at the large UK event, The Gathering. Ryan has just recorded his first solo album to be released mid to end of 2009.

Recorded and produced by the legendary Paul Mills (producer of Bluetree’s “God of this City”) at Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin, the album will include 11 of his own songs, two of

which were co-written with Aaron Boyd from Bluetree.

Ryan shares, “My heart and passion is to see people have a true revelation of who God is, respond to His greatness and love, and in turn, be changed more into His likeness…to then go into the world, love others and be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ.”

Ryan is ‘Director of Worship’ at Exchange Church Belfast and has recently become a fiancé to the beautiful Erin Walker.

“Following Christ is much more than music - music is the byproduct of living for Christ.” So says Paul Baloche, renowned American worship leader who hails from Lindale, Texas.

With a songwriter’s CV of some of the most prolific songs of our time, such as “Open the Eyes of My Heart”, “Hosanna” and ”Above All”, Baloche has walked a journey

of worship and faith in the public arena for over 25 years. Treading this path has brought about co-writing opportunities with the like of Michael W. Smith and Brenton Brown, alongside the social justice collaboration, CompassionArt, with Martin Smith (Delirious?) and Darlene Zschech (Hillsong).

It is this double-edged approach of faith and action that captures

the essence of Baloche’s passion for worship. “I think one of our responsibilities in writing worship songs is to be conscious that we are trying to create a sense of community,” he notes.

“We are trying to use songs as a vehicle and a tool to bring people together and sing our prayers collectively to God.”

These ordinary people took extraordinary action to change lives, change history and change the world. An injustice that urgently needs champions is the issue of water and sanitation. Taps and toilets are things that we simply can’t live without. Each of us uses about 150 litres of water every day. We all go to the loo roughly 5 times a day, each flush using up to 9 litres of water! Yet unbelievably, 900 million people in the world don’t have access to the precious resource of clean, safe water. 2.5 billion people don’t have a decent toilet to use. It’s a massive problem, with loads of awful consequences, and yet water and sanitation has become a forgotten development issue by people in power. We want to do something about it. Come to the Tearfund Café to find out how you can be a champion and take extraordinary action to make a difference. Our usual fair-trade coffee, treats, relaxing atmosphere, decent toilets and friendly Tearfund volunteers await you!

Champions… the world would be a very different place without them. Imagine what the world would be like if Martin Luther King hadn’t fought for the rights of African Americans, or if William Wilberforce hadn’t campaigned for the abolition of the slave trade.

@ SUMMER MADNESS

But, in reality, they’re just everyday randomers in red T-Shirts with a strong belief in God’s desire to do business with you at Madness this year: you’ll see them all around the place, but a favoured location is in pairs in front of Mainstage at the end of an evening, chewing a mint & waiting – why?

God ministers in many ways at Madness, and one of those is ministry through prayer – “mtp”. This is facilitated in a safe and trained way by the Ministry Through Prayer Team: you’ll see “MTPT 09” on our badges & red tees.

We believe that God blesses all who call on Him, and we also realise that sometimes there’s a need for prayer about something that God has brought to your mind, with someone who will pray and seek God’s guidance with you: those someones make up the MTP Team.

A suave, sophisticated and handsome bunch we may seem (pause for laughter…), but spiritual superheroes with everything sorted we are not – we are simply open to being used by God in ministry through prayer for His glory and for your benefit: after all, God is not in the business of harm, but of help; not of blame, but of blessing. So – why not

take a step of reconciliation between yourself & God..?

The detailed bits: the MTP Team will be at the front after every Mainstage. We will also be available at the 24/5 prayer venue (daytime) between Mainstage events. We can be recognised by our i.d. badges & wonderful red tees - accept no substitutes. We will not pressure you, preach at you, or do weird stuff: ‘your name’ &’ what you want prayer for’ is all we ask. We keep confidences (then later forget), unless criminal or abuse issues, suspected or actual, are raised: SM will pass details on to the relevant statutory authorities.

… some say they’ve got a “special ability” to know everything about you … or that they can spot a sin at 50m in a crowded ‘After Dark’ venue: others say they can recharge your mobile just by holding it, or that they can sense when the queue for the showers is at its shortest…

“It has been my great privilege to chair the Summer Madness Directors for the past three years. The Directors and staff are constantly encouraged every year to see how God has mightily used Madness to impact on the lives of so many young people.”

We believe the time has come around again to invite all those who have been blessed by Summer Madness to be part of the foundation for the future of the festival, and in so doing help to shape the next generation of young people and their relationships with God.The incredible backing of our core supporters really strengthens the Directors in fulfilling their role of overseeing all the legal and financial responsibilities of the Limited Company and SM Charity.

So it is my pleasure to wholeheartedly endorse John and the team in their search for more new “Summer Madness Angels”. I know that some of us have been just waiting for an opportunity such as this to give something back for all we have received from Madness over the years.

Each afternoon will present an opportunity for youth leaders to talk about their own practice at a facilitated youth work surgery. This is a place to ask questions, raise concerns and celebrate good practice.

We are also privileged to have a wide selection of speakers including Andy Hewitt, Glenn Jordan and Matthew Boyd, come to share their experiences on issues facing youth leaders in a changing, culturally diverse society.

CIYD and Youthlink have made it their aim to serve youth leaders through this venue empow-ering them to become the best they can be. Part of this is to supply a resource package that could be used by anyone involved in youth work.

Connect offers leaders space to reflect on their youth work practice, relate to other youth workers and be inspired by people engaged with the changing dynamics of youth work in today’s society.

EARLYMORN BITES

Early Morning BitesEvery morning at this year’s Summer Madness we will try to provide some quiet space in the morning for anyone/everyone to connect with God person-ally through prayer, bible study etc.

Here’s your 4 options on Saturday, Sunday and Monday:

Smart 1 Deep - First Stop at 8.30am

CIYD/Youthlink - Bible Study (with David Dunlop) - 8.30am

The Good Fight The Good Fight sounds like four young men trying to make a sound of emotion driven rock that can cut through the hum drum of musical traffic.

“The Good Fight are in it for the long haul. They wear their heart on their sleeve and really don’t care about trying to impress. Maybe it’s for this reason that above the sheer class and professionalism within their sound, The Good Fight bring something else to the party. They fill a gap that once you hear them you wonder how you ever lived without them.” - Rory McConnell, BBC Introducing

Six Star Hotel

Veterans in their own right whilst barely in their twenties, Ireland’s own indie boys return to SM after a year out from the touring grind. With the release of their debut album “A Kind of Crusade” in 2007, Six Star Hotel were firmly established as one of the country’s most exciting rock acts. The debut, a culmination of four years steady touring, saw sessions in the famous Abbey Road studios, London, and gave rise to European and domestic tours during 2007 and 2008 in line with the release.

Towards the end of 2008, the band drew back from the live stage to give of themselves to the next album process – a move which sees the unveiling of a whole new batch of new material in the summer of 2009. With this next album planned for release in September 2009 and a track record of electrifying live shows, this is one of the most eagerly-awaited performances this year.

Gentry Morris

Gentry Morris has been creating quite a buzz in Northern Ireland over the last few months with his exceptional live shows and an anticipated album release later this year. He uses his American background to create a unique blend of alternative/folk music full of contagious melodies and insightful lyrics.

Four Kornerz

Since bursting onto the music scene in 2004, Four Kornerz has established itself as one of the UK’s leading and brightest prospects for live music and entertain-ment. The core-band is made up of four sibling brothers who combined stunning vocals with a fresh approach to music production. The band’s ability to embrace a variety of musical sounds from Funk, R&B, Soul and Jazz to more traditional Nigerian rhythms from their homeland – has all contributed to what many see as a unique and refreshing approach to music delivery - but it’s in the powerful back-drop of Gospel music that the band has honed its craft thanks to a strong Church upbringing and a genuine appreciation for the music form.

The Steels

The Steels are an exciting, edgy 3-piece rock band, hailing from Newcastle, England. Their unmissable live sets have astounded music lovers at major festivals all over the UK, Europe, and USA. The audience have the time of their lives while hearing ‘The Steels’ blend of guitar driven pop-rock, which takes the message of Jesus to the next generation in a new and refreshing style.

29th Chapter

The 29th Chapter have come to see Northern Ireland as a second home over the past few years. They have always found the ‘Norn Iron’ crowd to be a particularly special bunch. Be prepared for something very special when you come to see them at Summer Madness this year. An explosive set of big tunes, street/break dance and the trademark 29th Chapter banter awaits both old and new fans alike. This is set to blow apart their performance at the Odyssey last year…Be there!

Paul Colman

Paul Colman is a Grammy Nominated singer/songwriter/entertainer. He has performed all over the world and sold hundreds of thousands of records. He has released 15 recordings featuring his songs and for three years (2005-8) was the guitarist for Aussie rockers, The Newsboys. Jan 2009 saw him release HISTORY: a collection of his best songs.

Rend Collective

The Rend Collective Experiment started in 2004 as a group of confused 20-somethings started trying to figure out life, God and community. Then in 2007 it grew into a collective of musicians and artists – and from there? Trying to share a little bit of it with the rest of world. 2009 brings about the recording and release of their debut full-length later in the year.

Mel Wiggins “Music was in my veins, and there wasn’t much getting around it” says Mel. “I was sent to piano lessons twice as a child and was pulled out after a few weeks because I was wasting my parents hard earned money. They could never get me to practice what my teacher sent me home to do. I was a free spirit when it came to music. I wanted to explore. I wanted to create it for myself.” Not much about Mel’s attitude to music has changed...but her talent has certainly evolved.

Since those days, Mel’s passion to create music has formed in specific and significant ways and she has discovered her voice, inner and outer. In doing so, she has been given amazing opportuni-ties to sing and write songs about stuff that she thinks matter in the world...and people are starting to listen.

Captain Cameron A quiet man, Captain Cameron holds himself with the humble air of one used to serious thought. His lyrics are

intricately crafted observations, full of depth and rich metaphor, yet they never totally hide the undercurrents of raucous banter, found in a man with a rather sharp wit. From the quiet obscurity of Drumbeg, he found his folk legs on the rock stage with SixStarHotel, yet his own sound follows another path. His music is delicate and considered, awash

with passionate crescendos and fragile phrases that convince us that he truly means what he sings. Notes of Ameri-cana and John Denver meet sombre, Irish-folk influences, yet no one element truly dominates his emotive blend of melody. His music is unquestionably beautiful, full of stillness and intensity, musing, wondering and intent. Indeed, Captain Cameron has a command of verse and chorus befitting his name.

Foy Vance

Usual tags such as ‘singer-songwriter’, ‘folk-soul’, ‘troubadour’ are perceived with a considerable amount of cynicism these days, especially since the music scene has been saturated with middle of the road artists, marketed as such by traditional record label formulae. Someone with a discerning ear and trust in their own taste should be able to spot who’s the real deal and who’s not.

Leaving tags aside, Foy Vance operates in his own parallel universe. His music is an evolving journey, a constant search for artistic expression captured in the moment, operating well away

from industry standards. Surely you’ll hear echoes of Otis Redding, Richie Havens, Tom Waits and Van Morrison in Foy’s music, legends he’s already being compared to and definite influences. An ever so modest Foy will laugh at these comparisons, but then again that’s what makes him so special.

L’Angelus

A band of siblings hailing from Lafayette, Louisiana, USA, who deliver the spirit of their Cajun country, bluegrass and Irish roots with heart, wit, flair and confidence. L’Angelus’ harmonies, fiddling and rhythms bring

you to the place where hope, innocence, power, passion and faith convene: the Southwestern Louisiana dancehall! Maguire & I

John Maguire was an old man who lived just down the road from where I grew up. Everyone knew him as Maguire. He was the kind of old man who carved stuff out of wood and ate wild berries that he would pluck from the hedgerows. But who are these young minstrels trying to fool? Maguire & I aren’t old and they don’t like wild berries. They do however play delectable tunes, gracing the stage with an alt. country air, hand in hand with a timeless charm that even old man Maguire would be proud of.

Brian McLaren

Introducing… REHAB PROGRAMME

Brian D. McLaren is an author, speaker, pastor, and networker among innovative Christian leaders, thinkers, and activists. He is actively involved in emergent, a growing generative friendship among missional Christian leaders (www.emergentvillage.com), and is a founding member of Red Letter Christians.

“I praise God, as Paul said, for whoever is preaching Christ. I don’t think there’s one “right” way to do church. I think there are tiny house churches serving God in beautiful ways, and I think there aremegachurches equally faithful in their service to God. Whereverthere are signs of the kingdom of God, we should rejoice, whatever form they take.”

(1940s abbreviation for the 16th century word meaning to restore to former privileges.)

Welcome to the first Rehab. You must need help! You will be in good company. Rehab is a new venue and a new journey in the Summer Madness Festival. It finds its roots in two different sorts of ground – 1. Those who have been campers at Summer Madness for years and have simply grown out of camping and/or teenage thinking and faith, and 2. those who have been exploring the mixture of faith, mission, church, and appropriate ways of living when you are somewhere between 18 and thirty-something. This is all set in the context of living in an island off the coast of Europe where economies, governments, church institutions and communications technologies are all in the melting pot.

Rehab is not simply a conference nor a mini-festival but aims to bring you an experience of mission-shaped community in the 21st century. The four days will be marked by activity and opportunity described as UP, IN, OUT, and OF.

UP towards God where God is found in Himself, IN towards the community life where God is found in each other, OUT towards the wider world where God is to be found among the broken and the lost, and OF where God is found as he moves in history and around the world.

The actual programme gives opportunity for worship, seminars, discussion, coffee, debate and question, lunch, prayer, listening,

reflecting, silence, arts…it is to engaged in rather than looked at.

The Rehab experience will be led by Brian McLaren, Foy Vance, your mates, Maguire and I, L’angelus, you, Jason Clark, Jools, the Rend collective, Mel Wiggins, your friends, lots of people you have never met before…all of this will be hosted by Neville Barnes, Ryan Mitchell, Teresa Hill, Richard Nelson, and Adrian McCartney (the Boringwells team).

All of this is in the Octagon Conference centre.
