Just One Man’s OpinionThanks For The Memories

As you can see by the photos on these pages, May 17th was a day for friends and celebration. Because of the kindness of Richard Lewis and California Musical Theater, our venue was the Wells Fargo Pavilion, longtime home of the Music Circus. The weather was kind to us and nearly 400 Travel Club Members and their friends came to the party on a sunny Saturday afternoon.

It was a nearly perfect day, by any measure. Our entertainers rose to the occasion. Jessie Linn Norman, one of our scholarship winners years ago, was on hand to sing for us. Goodness, that young lady is so pretty and she sings so well (not to mention being extremely bright), it’s easy to imagine her making a career on the stage.

David Walburn brought his special brand of Montana music to the proceedings, along with accompanying video. David has entertained our groups at Glacier Nat’l Park for many years and his song about the park’s famous scenic road, the Going to the Sun Highway, is one of my personal folk favorites. After a trip down memory lane with Bob Hope and a whole lot of pictures from the past 35 years, everyone enjoyed anniversary cupcakes and champagne/sparkling cider at intermission.

The second half of the show opened with a radio interview by The Travel Guys, yours

truly, joined by Tom Romano, my broadcast partner. Tom asked a bunch of pretty good questions and we used the interview as part of our radio show the following day, complete with audience applause and laughter in the background. (To hear the radio show, go to www.travelguysradio.com and click on the “podcast” for May 18th.)

Finally, it was time for the star. Jack Gallagher touched on a variety of topics most of us could identify with, putting a humorous light on the challenges of growing older. Jack left everyone laughing, and a great afternoon came to a close.

Our official anniversary date is June 8th. Because that first official trip left on Friday the 8th to Lake Tahoe and returned in the pre-dawn hours on the 9th, we sometimes refer to both days as our birthday.

Thirty-five years is a long time. Some of the people reading this are the children of folks who traveled with us years ago. Some discovered Sports Leisure through an aunt, or a recommendation from a friend. A few just wandered in off the street. All are a welcome part of our travel family.

A good number of the members in attendance were folks whose traveling days are in their rear view mirror. It was especially nice to see so many of them. I couldn’t get to everyone, many faces I saw from across

the room. I truly apologize if I didn’t get to greet you personally. Just looking at some folks brought back memories of the places we discovered together. I’m certain many in attendance were experiencing the same feelings.

We are just a tour company, a reasonably small one at that. We have spent the last three and a half decades creating travel experiences for the special people who enjoy our services. Nearly 50,000 people have joined our Travel Club, and they have collectively made nearly 300,000 trips. We have never subscribed to the accepted ways of doing business in the travel industry. We have always been driven by the requests of our customers, since that first trip to Lake Tahoe. Our relationship has often been less about business and more about life. It is different and it is successful.

I am personally grateful for the opportunities Sports Leisure has given me, the chance to travel to wonderful places, making dreams come true along the way. Few men or women are as lucky as the one penning these words. For that I say thank you to you all.

After 23 Years, The Final Curtain

The day after our celebration, Chris and I journeyed to Palm Springs, to be a part of the audience for the final performance of The Follies. Two SLV groups saw the show this year, titled The Last Hurrah. The Follies revived downtown Palm Springs and made a lot of merchants in town a bunch of money. I suspect next fall they will realize that and reflect on how to replace the 125,000 people the show brought into downtown each year. We congratulate Mary and Rif, the dreamers behind The Follies. I have written about the final show in my blog. You can read it by going to www.sportsleisure.com and clicking on the post-it note at the top of the home page. (You can also sign up to automatically receive future posts by email if you wish.)

Seven performances, to be exact, including concerts by Vince Gill, Amy Grant, Sandy Patti, Michael W. Smith and Sacramento’s own Lee Greenwood.

You’ll attend the Grand Ole Opry, a production of A Christmas Carol and enjoy an intimate audience with John Carter Cash, the only son of the legendary “Man in Black.” Great food and festive sightseeing round out the package. This program is especially well-suited for fans and alumni of past Branson vacations. We have no tours to Missouri’s Music Mecca this year, so why not give Nashville a try? I think you’ll be glad you did!

“Your Tour Guy,”

Clayton Whitehead, CTPVice President

Clayton PlaceThe Forgotten South

For more than two decades now, I’ve taken Sports Leisure groups annually to such iconic Southern sites as Savannah, Charleston, New Orleans and Washington, DC. Other popular destinations are featured on tours every two to three years such as Biloxi, Williamsburg, Memphis and the great Commonwealth of Kentucky. Next up are the every-once-in-a-while-if-ever places like my proposed tour to West Virginia and The Greenbrier in the fall of 2015. Significant Southern places, all, but just a little difficult to access, position in an itinerary or promote. I call these the “Forgotten South.”

In my 20+ years here, I think we’ve only visited Alabama three times, and two of them were mystery tours. It’s not that we don’t like Alabama. On the contrary, our Controller Bob Veliky is a graduate of that great football powerhouse the University of Alabama – Roll Tide! From her sandy beaches on the Gulf Coast to the majestic Tennessee River snaking through her northern extremities, she definitely lives up to the proud motto on her license plates: Alabama the Beautiful! She was home to Bear Bryant (that one was for Bob) and Helen Keller; the Tuskegee Airmen and Condoleezza Rice – all people who would not take no for an answer, who beat the odds and attained national, even international acclaim for their acts. That’s the stuff Alabamians are made of!

History motivates me more than anything, and Alabama has it everywhere you go. If you’re looking for sites significant to the Civil War or the Civil Rights Movement, you’ve picked the right place. Selma, for example, offers both. After visiting the battlefield, you can take a walk over the Edmund Pettus Bridge – extremely moving and not a little bit frightening, even today. Montgomery was the first capital of the Confederacy in

the 1860s and the place where Martin Luther King, Jr. began his ministry in the 1950s. The little church still stands today literally in the shadow of the building that once housed the government of the rebelling states. To totally understand the history, you have to see the sites… you have to walk in the footsteps of the history-makers… you have to live their stories.

So who’s interested in a new tour, Sweet Home Alabama! It would be offered in the spring of next year. If this sounds good to you (or West Virginia in October, 2015), call and place your name on the Priority Notification List today!

There’s another Forgotten South I want to mention – it’s the area in and around Tennessee’s Capital City, Nashville. Please look ahead in these pages and find a new tour called A Tender Tennessee Christmas,

December 1-6. This tour is for anyone who likes

live performances with a holiday twist.

Dear Michael,The Twin Lakes Food Bank sends a GREAT

BIG THANKS to you for holding a Food Drive. Our records show that your Open House brought in over 650 pounds of food. What a blessing!!! Because of your response to our communities needs, the food bank will be able to continue helping those families in our community who rely on our services.

In these difficult economic times we have seen a significant increase in those needing our help. Currently, we are serving over 830 households a month. It is because of your very generous support that we are able to keep up with the growing demand for our services.

Thank you again for your contribution and all your support. In joy,Tammy ThompsonDirector, Twin Lakes Food Bank

Ed. Note: This donation is the canned and packaged food travelers who came to our Spring Open House on April 10, 11 & 12 brought to our office. Seems like just about every time Sports Leisure Travelers gather, someone in the community benefits. Pretty cool.

Dear Sports Leisure,Once again we would like to thank you

for your generous donation of $150.00 to the National Park Service. Your contribution will help preserve the park’s resources and tell the stories of Manzanar National Historic Site.

We are happy you have had the opportunity to visit our site and hope that you will come see us again soon.

On behalf of everyone at Manzanar, please accept our thanks for your support. If

you have any questions about upcoming visits, please call me. Sincerely,Colin Smith, Acting Superintendent

Hi Chris Oh my, you just took a

load off my chest with your wonderful article in the March-April issue about international

travel and the importance of being flexible.Yes, my wife and I have been on

international trips where we have heard the usual complaints. We have never been able to understand it, I think it is unnecessary and above all not being a good ambassador for the United States. So thank you for writing that article..Bob and Lilia Westmore

Dear Mark & Clayton,Congratulations on your 35th anniversary!

You’re the Best! I’m so sorry I’m unable to attend your party but I shall be there in spirit and pray for your continued success! Don’t give up on me, I’m still looking for a travel companion. Sincerely,Gloria McAdams

Dear Mark,Congratulations on 35 successful years!

You must feel proud and excited to celebrate this milestone! Just think-if you multiply the number of trips by the number of travelers how many wonderful memories you have helped create!

I don’t know if I’ll be able to attend the May 17 party. I am at the cabin in Amador County in the middle of a major clean-up project. As I write, I am waiting for a dumpster, chipper and crew to arrive.

Thank you for the good times and memories SLV has provided me. Take Care. With Appreciation, Barbara

Tom Romano and Mark Hoffmann, The Travel Guys, live on stage at our 35th Anniversary Celebration. Catch the show every Sunday at 3pm on KFBK 93.1FM and 1530 AM.

The Human Side Learn, Laugh, Reflect

It’s A Blessing…A wonderfully updated list of church bulletin bloopers. These sentences (with all the BLOOPERS) actually appeared in church bulletins or were announced in church services:

The Fasting & Prayer Conference includes meals.

Ladies, don’t forget the rummage sale. It’s a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Bring your husbands.

Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our community.

Smile at someone who is hard to love.

Say “Hell” to someone who doesn’t care much about you.

For those of you who have children, and don’t know it, we have a nursery downstairs.

Next Thursday there will be tryouts for the choir. They need all the help they can get.

Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24 in the church. So ends a friendship that began in their school days.

A bean supper will be held on Tuesday evening in the church hall. Music will follow.

At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be “What Is Hell?” Come early and listen to our choir practice.

Eight new choir robes are currently needed due to the addition of several new members and to the

deterioration of some older ones.

Scouts are saving aluminum cans, bottles and other items to be recycled. Proceeds will be used to cripple children.

Potluck supper Sunday at 5:00 PM – prayer and medication to follow.

This evening at 7 PM there will be a hymn singing in the park across from the Church. Bring a blanket and

come prepared to sin.

Ladies Bible Study will be held Thursday morning at 10 AM. All ladies are invited to lunch in the Fellowship Hall

after the B.S. is done.

The pastor would appreciate it if the ladies of the Congregation would lend him their electric girdles for the

pancake breakfast next Sunday.

Low Self Esteem Support Group will meet Thursday at 7 PM. Please use the back door.

The eighth-graders will be presenting Shakespeare’s Hamlet in the Church basement Friday at 7 PM. The congregation is

invited to attend this tragedy.

Weight Watchers will meet at 7 PM at the First Presbyterian Church. Please use large double door at the side entrance.

I’m Not Old, Just MatureToday at the drugstore, the clerk was a gent. From my purchase, this chap took off ten percent. I asked for the cause of a lesser amount; And he answered, “Because of the Seniors’ Discount.”

I went to McDonald’s for a burger and fries; And there, once again, got quite a surprise. The clerk poured some coffee which he handed to me. He said, “For you Seniors, the coffee is free.”

Understand – I’m not old – I’m merely mature; But some things are changing… temporarily, I’m sure. The newspaper print gets smaller each day, And people speak softer – can’t hear what they say.

My teeth are my own (I have the receipt.),And my glasses identify people I meet. Oh, I’ve slowed down a bit… not a lot, I am sure. You see, I’m not old… I’m only mature.

My friends all get older… much faster than me. They seem much more wrinkled, from what I can see. I’ve got character lines, not wrinkles… for sure, But don’t call me old… just call me mature.

The steps in the houses they’re building today Are so high that they take your breath all away; And the streets are much steeper than ten years ago. That should explain why my walking is slow.

But I’m keeping up on what’s hip and what’s new, And I think I can still dance a mean boogaloo. I’m still in the running… in this I’m secure, I’m not really old… I’m only mature

A Prince and an Abbey, An English-style Mystery Tour7 Days • October 16-22

Two 3-night hotel stays anchor this itinerary, full of “rarely or never before visited on a Sports Leisure tour” attractions/destinations. One stay is in a historical city, one in a historical property. Allow us to offer some clues as to your destinations: There is dinner one night in an exclusive club, and at one point in your travels, you’ll ponder where to cross the river. You’ll meet a prince and a general, and learn of some fictional characters from a place called “Downton Abbey” you may enjoy.

Considering the calendar, fall foliage could come into play, but the big question is, “Will they be better inside or out?” The colors we mean. Both hotels are named for famous American families. Visit a historic but new castle (How can it be both?), explore the halls of a famous house of learning. Your Tour Director will be Mark and perhaps an assistant, leading you on a most unique adventure, with a slight lean towards history, both real and imaginary.

The package is limited to 35 travelers and includes airfare and 13 meals (3 breakfasts, 3 full breakfasts, 3 lunches and 4 dinners).

The 13th Annual Christmas Mystery Tour, A Big City HolidayFive nights in an Embassy Suites Hotel, no packing and unpacking6 Days • December 6-11

Wow! Two important clues to your destination right off the bat: Immediately every community in the country which doesn’t have an Embassy Suites Hotel (ESH) is eliminated from your consideration, along with places there is an ESH which isn’t a “big city.” Wonder what Mark’s definition of a big city is? Another clue: It isn’t New York.

Some travelers try very hard to figure out the destination(s), because to them, that’s the best part of the trip. Others just enjoy the fact that they will be surprised by each day’s itinerary. Some have taken many or all of these holiday adventures. They are always special.

More clues: Our hotel is near one of Clayton’s favorite places. Every holiday itinerary should include festive activities like gingerbread houses and high tea in fancy hotels, and this one is no exception. You’ll want to shop in the unique Christmas Market and enjoy a special “sampling of treats and sweets” nearby. It’s said, mile-after-mile of twinkling lights line the path to the presents. This particular destination is truly known for its food, so we won’t miss a feeding on tour.

Every night, your suites will offer complimentary libations; each morning you’ll enjoy a cooked-to-order breakfast. A nearby museum offers a phenomenal display of decorated trees, bring your camera. It’s almost like traveling around the world. Want to go out on the water? Ok, but you might have to skate on it. This tour is not going to a warm weather destination (look, another valuable clue).

After a dozen years of Christmas mysteries

to destinations big and small, we can honestly say this trip is like no other before it. Plus, that one hotel thing (Embassy Suites no less) is certainly a strong anchor for your adventures.

TeasersCuba is Calling! An island paradise is waiting for you10 Days • January 5-14, 2015

The mystical island of Cuba is calling…again! Following the success of our first departure in January, Chris is ready to go explore again. Spend your first and last day of the trip in the area of Ft. Lauderdale/Miami and 8 days in Cuba. Learn about the complex history of Cuban-American relations firsthand from scholars and everyday people striving to improve Cuban society. Spanish colonial architecture, cathedrals, museums, lively salsa dancers and artisans are sure to excite! Stay in Havana, Sancti Spiritus and Cienfuegos. Call to place your name on the Priority Notification List and receive updates during the planning process.

Croatia By Land & SeaFeaturing 7 days on land and 7 days on a private deluxe ship16 days • April 26 – May 11, 2015

Scott visited Croatia on the Adriatic Sea last year. Cruise the Dalmatian coast on a private small ship visiting islands with historic walled cities full of marvelous architecture. The itinerary will include Dubrovnik, Zagreb, Pula and Opatija. Also included: Plitvice Lakes National Park, and the coastal town of Split. The double price will be around $6,000.00 per person. Because the ship only has 19 cabins and the single price will be quite a lot more, we would like to have a get-together with single travelers and see if anyone would be interested in sharing accommodations. Call and put your name on the Priority Notification List and let us know if you are willing to share a cabin. This vacation requires a valid passport!

Poland & Prague, A Culinary Adventure12 Days • August 2015

Planned for a maximum of 12-15 persons, this package isn’t for everyone. We work with Poland Culinary Vacations, which offers customized, intimate cooking vacations in Poland. They combine elements

of countryside tourism – the people and the agriculture – with hands-on and demonstration-style cooking in acclaimed urban restaurants. In the evenings during the rural portion of the tour, you’ll retire to the casual elegance and historic wonder of a castle, palace or manor. The itinerary emphasizes the area around Krakow and ends with three glorious nights in Prague. It is a very different product than we have ever offered before. Fully escorted by Sports Leisure and Polish-speaking staff. Sound like fun? Place your name on the Priority Notification List!

Downton Abbey, London and England’s CountrysideFeaturing a visit and tour of privately owned Highclere CastleAugust 8-17, 2015

Visiting Highclere Castle, known to millions of viewers worldwide as Downton Abbey, is the hottest ticket in England right now. Owners of the private estate allow only limited visitation throughout the year, but we’ve secured a date next summer on August 11 so we’re going to England in 2015! Accommodations for our first six nights will be in an equally grand estate-turned-boutique hotel outside London. From there we’ll make daily expeditions to such iconic locations as Stonehenge, Shakespeare’s Stratford-upon-Avon, Oxford Cathedral and Windsor Castle. Then into London-proper and a hotel in the West End (London’s theatre district) for two nights. There you’ll enjoy a night of theatre and local touring to include Buckingham Palace (along with the colorful Changing of the Guard), the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey and high tea at Harrod’s. Please place your name on the Priority Notification List by calling our office.

The Heart of EuropeA circle tour of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Northern Italy, France and Belgium15 Days • Fall 2015

This itinerary offers seven countries, historic cities, spectacular scenery, and lots of local flavor. It is an ideal choice for first-time travelers to Europe or anyone desiring a taste of the Old World at a great value. With several two-night stays and travel distances usually no more than one to two hours between each day’s attractions, meal stops and hotels, this is a more leisurely itinerary than you would expect! The tour will include door-to-door service, roundtrip airfare, deluxe hotel accommodations, 23 Meals, a local guide and the services of a Sports Leisure Vacations Tour Director. All hotels will be announced when the tour is priced and will be rated Superior Tourist Class or higher. All rooms have a private bathroom with sink, toilet, and shower or bathtub. Call now to be placed on the Priority Notification List. Requires a valid passport!

River Cruising in 2015 – North America, Vietnam, Europe

This type of travel has become very popular, but not all river ships are created equal, as some have found. We offered a Vietnam Cruise, but pulled it back after response was low. Chris is still looking at options there, so if that destination interests you, ask him about it. That region would be a great one to see from a floating hotel. There are many itineraries available in Europe. Would you prefer a summer cruise? The Danube? Rivers of Holland at Tulip Time? Christmas Markets in December? Which of those three appeal to you the most? Would you be interested in a small-ship cruise on the St. Lawrence River, through the Thousand Islands and on to historic Quebec? We used to offer this product many years ago and are considering it for 2015. Please tell us of your interest in our ideas or one of your own. Our choices will appear in the July newsletter and/or the annual catalog in September.

The Barber Pole, or Once Over LightlyThe Gold Passport 50,000 Point Club

In just the last two months, we have had three Gold Members redeem Gold Passport Points at the top level. In 2013, over $32,000.00 in Gold Passport Points were redeemed. Congratulations to Penny Helfrich, Pat Campbell and Barbara Haviland on reaching the top of the award chart. They each received a $2,500 credit towards the trip of their choice, amounting to a 5% rebate on their purchases, one of the most generous frequent customer awards to be found anywhere.

As a reminder, you become a Gold Member after you travel a total of 20 days with us, over an indefinite period of time. Once you are Gold, you begin earning Gold Passport Points on every trip, at roughly one point per dollar spent. Points can be redeemed starting at 3,000 points for discounts and gift cards. When you reach 50,000 points, you too can travel for free on any tour with a value of up to $2,500, or receive a credit for that amount toward a more expensive trip.

Gold Members receive double Travel Club di$counts on every tour. Day trip di$counts go from $1 to $2, overnights from $2 to $4, extended tours from $5 to $10. From time to time, we hold special Gold Member Appreciation events, where you receive special prices and/or benefits.

little more leg room (3-5 inches). These seats cost $29-$99 per segment, depending on the distance.

Upgrading a cross country trip costs $150 – $200. Upgrading over the pond is a bit more. If comfort on the plane is important, in this writer’s opinion, this is the way to go. You even get to board earlier, which gives you a better shot at the overhead bin space. If you are interested in this option, inquire at the time you reserve your trip.

New Policy Regarding Special Ticket Requests

Many times, travelers call and ask us to secure special seating for them at ballgames, concerts, theater performances and other events. We are happy to go the extra mile and provide this service without any additional charge (unless the price of the tickets themselves changes). However, recently we have found ourselves in a difficult situation on occasion. This happens when the person requesting the special seating decides they want to change travel dates (baseball) or just not go. Then we are stuck with a ticket or tickets in a special seating area which may not be acceptable to other members of the SLV group. These tickets are generally secured within 48 hours of when your reservation is confirmed.

To help avoid this situation, effective May 15, we have a instituted a new policy in regards to these tickets. Please be aware, if you request special seating for a ticketed event (accessible/handicapped access, upgraded viewing, etc.) and cancel for any reason after the tickets have been purchased for you, the value of the tickets is nonrefundable unless Sports Leisure Vacations is able to resell or exchange the tickets or receive a refund for them.

If we are unable to resell or exchange the tickets, they will be mailed to you and you may dispense them as you wish. The value of special seating tickets is not covered by trip cancellation protection. This policy is in effect for any reservation made after May 15, 2014.

people from 32 states and 4 countries. Many of those “out-of-towners” are folks who lived in our area at one time, and now reside elsewhere, but still have their passion for travel and for being on a Sports Leisure tour. They are all part of our extended travel family, people we share life’s adventures with, those we met over dinner in a great restaurant, or while eating a piece of homemade pie on the Lincoln Highway.

Here, we pause for a moment in our day-to-day affairs to remember members of our family who have recently left this earth. We salute their memories and wish them God speed. If you know of a member of our travel family who should be remembered here, please contact Donnie ([email protected]) at our office. We sincerely try to list everyone.rosa White Marlyn carlson Janice Mallett ruth Vancepeggy Valentine Dolores coyle Judy Klemm

Get More Comfortable on the Plane

There are ways to avoid the “cattle car crunch” in the back of the plane, and perhaps even snare that coveted aisle seat.

1. Use Your Miles to Upgrade – Depending on the fare class and availability, you may be able to use your frequent flyer miles to upgrade to first or business class on your trip. Michael Downer, our air expert, is here to help.

Our Tour Directors are allowed to use their miles for this purpose. If you see your Tour Director in first class, it’s because they “paid” for it with their miles, it didn’t cost you anything. Some people save their miles for long distance trips, some choose to be more comfortable on shorter domestic trips.

2. Buy First Class – Of course, we are happy to purchase first class seats for you. This is the worst option of the three listed here, because it’s the most expensive. But if your wallet get handle it, we are happy to sell you the seats up front.

3. Buy Up to Economy Plus, Comfort Class or… Most of the major carriers now offer seats in the front part of coach with a
