The Luck and a Legend

Came Together

For  a  little  over 31  years  now,  this has  been  the  way I’ve made my living. Not a bad job, some

would  say.  I  would  certainly  agree.  Like anything  it  has  its  up  and  down  moments, but  the  ups  far  outnumber  the  downs. Perhaps the best thing about that equation is that you never know when or where one of  those  particularly  memorable  moments will  occur,  like  the  Wednesday  morning  in Clifton, New Jersey when we came face-to-face with an American Legend.

We’ve been making trips to ballparks since day one here at Sports Leisure. As many of you know, it’s how our company got its start. While our hearty band of  fans of America’s pastime has shrunk slightly  in recent years, we still gather together every year and make

a  trip  to  one  or  more  ballparks  in  the  far corners of our country.

We’ve  had  some  memorable  days.  Like the  afternoon  at  Dodger  Stadium  when Tommy Lasorda, the great Dodger manager, appeared  during  a  tour  of  the  ballpark.  Or the  day  in  Kansas  City  when  the  A’s  were the opponent and we had a field level box. One  of  the  A’s  players  spotted  a  Rivercats hat on one of our group, and came over to us to mention that he had just been called up from Sactown to the big leagues. When he  found  out  the  entire  group  was  from Sacramento, he called all the guys over who had played  for  the Rivercats on  the way  to Oakland  and  we  had  6-8  major  leaguers casually chatting with our gang before  the game in KC. That was cool.

But  none  of  those  will  ever  top  the  day we  met  Lawrence (Yogi) Berra.  Our  band of  wandering  baseball  minstrels  went  to New  York,  Chicago  and  St.  Louis  to  catch some  games  and  follow Yogi’s  life.  He  was born  in  St.  Louis  and  of  course,  played  for

and  managed  the  Yankees. (Chicago was a stopover point for  us,  and  a  chance  to  visit Wrigley Field.)

At  Monclair  State  University in  Clifton,  there  is  a  nice museum dedicated to Yogi, his life and career. It’s just adjacent to  the  school’s  baseball stadium,  a  perfect  match.  We went  there  to  learn  a  little more  about  the  hall-of-famer. We had arranged to have Dale Berra, Yogi’s  son  who  played in  the  majors  for  a  few  years himself,  speak  to  our  group. For  20  minutes  he  regaled  us with stories of his father. It was fascinating  and  we  were  all soaking up every word.

Towards  the  end  of  his presentation,  Dale  told  us, “Wait  just  a  minute,  I  have  a piece  of  memorabilia  to  share with you,” before disappearing

behind  a  door  and  leaving  us  wondering what he could possibly share with his small private audience. The museum had opened in  the  morning,  just  for  us.  A  few  seconds passed.  Dale  reappeared.  Just  behind  him was… his father.

We didn’t know whether to gasp, applaud or wet ourselves (ok, only I had that problem and  fortunately  for  all,  it  passed  quickly without incident).

Yogi  is  85.  He’s  an  18-time  All  Star  who played in 13 World Series and is undoubtedly one of the most recognized faces in America, thanks  to  his  memorable  quotes  and  Aflac commercials.  In  person,  Yogi  is,  well,  just Yogi. Same guy. We chatted with him, took a few pictures and went on our way.

In St. Louis, we saw the house he grew up in, met his niece (who shared more stories of her uncle) and had a great  Italian  lunch on “The Hill.” Oh, and we saw 4 baseball games. Normally, that would have been important. But  it’s  not  every  day  you  get  to  meet  a legend. Yogi Berra. Amazing.

And that, is Just One Man’s Opinion.

Sports Leisure Vacations / July–August 2010 3

Hello Friends:Effective  this

November  1,  2010, the  Transportation Safety Administration (TSA)  is requiring  of  all airlines  (therefore, the  airlines  are requiring  of  us)  full SFPD  from  everyone  who  flies  to,  from  or within the United States. SFPD!?!? What the heck  is that? Well  it’s not the San Francisco Police  Department!  It  stands  for  Secure Flight Passenger Data,  which  as  of  this deadline the TSA is defining as your full first, middle  and  last  names,  your  date  of  birth and your gender. If your trip is international, including  Canada  or  Mexico,  we  will additionally  need  your  passport  number. Some  airlines  may  already  require  this information  or  certainly  will  soon  as  they ramp up and test  their  systems  in advance of the deadline.

It  is  now  our  company  policy  to  ask everyone  signing  up  for  trips  involving  air and/or visiting an  international destination for  this  information  when  we  see  blanks in  your  membership  record.  You  should also  be  aware  it  is  not  just  airlines  that require this information. A growing number

of  marine  vessels  ask  us  to  provide  a passenger  manifest  containing  some  of your  personal  information  as  per  Coast Guard  requirements. This  is  sometimes  the case  even  on  short  daytime  sightseeing cruises. A very few “high profile” facilities we visit regularly, such as the United Nations in New York, also require a list of visitors’ names in advance of our visit. If you only take trips that  travel  entirely  by  motorcoach,  don’t cruise  or  visit  the  UN,  we  do  not  need  this information  from you. Of course we’ll keep you  posted  as  the  requirements  for  travel continue to evolve and change.

And please remember,  if you’re a William who  wants  to  be  called “Bill”  or  a  Mildred who  wants  to  be  called “Millie,”  just  let  us know. We have a special place for nicknames in our database. It is from here that we print your nametags.

You  can  rest  assured  all  your  personal information  is  kept  safely  and  securely  by our  computer  database.  It  is  guarded  by a  strong  security  and  firewall  system,  and is  continuously  monitored  and  upgraded. We’re  doing  all  we  can  to  protect  your privacy  and  security.  Remember,  our names  and  personal  information  are  in that  computer,  too!  And  please  note  your credit  card  information  is  never  kept  past the processing of your charge.  (This  is why

we  must  ask  for  your  number  again  when refunds are necessary.)

If  you  have  any  questions  or  concerns, please do not hesitate to call me personally, or,  as  I’m  a  frequent  traveler  and  often out  of  the  office,  contact  me  by  e-mail  at [email protected]. You can also check out www.tsa.gov for the latest  traveler advisories,  requirements and security.

Remembering Our Sports Leisure Family…

We  pause  for  a  moment  to  remember members of our Sports Leisure family who recently passed.

Bill Davis, Chris Galloway’s grandfather, passed away in Boulder, CO. Bill had been an avid traveler until his health declined.

Bertha Goodge, Ramona’s mother, passed  on  at  the  age  of  89  after  a  short illness. Many of us had met her for the first time at Tour Preview Day. A delightful lady, and  you  should  have  seen  Ramona  and her  together. Two  peas  in  a  pod  for  sure. Funny how that works.  I wish we had the time  to  get  to  know  her  better.  Ramona will  have  to  share  some  stories  someday. Cards  can  be  sent  to  Ramona  care  of  the Sports Leisure office if you like.

We also say goodbye to Karl Lorentzen. He  and  Jane have  traveled  with  us  for many  years.  The  adventures  we  shared would  fill  many  a  book.  Jane,  don’t  be  a stranger  now.  Finally,  we  lost  Barbara Semas from our family. A nice lady with a lovely smile, we will miss her.

We say goodbye to our dear friend Fern Drake, an  original  member  of  the  Gold Club and the Happy One-Derers. We wish her four daughters the very best.

May all of their travels be on the wings of angels. Forever.

The Customers Always WriteDear Mark and Clayton:

We  have  traveled  with  Sports Leisure Vacations  for  many  years  and  we  can’t count  the  number  of  great  meals  we  have eaten with our fellow travelers in restaurants of  your  choice.  However,  when  left  on  our own without knowledge of local eateries we usually end up in the bad ones. The price of food  has  risen,  whether  we  pay  out  of  our own pockets or pay you in advance to pick a good restaurant. In our opinion, you have had  a  very  good  track  record  in  making choices  over  the  past  20+  years,  and  we would  like  to  see  you  return  to  that  track. The food does not have to be gourmet fare. We  enjoy  eating  with  our  fellow  travelers, and we hope to continue that enjoyment for many years. Your friends,Tom and Mercedes Grosen

Appreciate  your  comments.  Be  well. Thanks  for  being  loyal  travelers  for  many years.Mark

The Human Side

Travel Club Members gather at a celebration for the life of Cliff Potter, top row from left: Bill Witt, David Davenport, Muriel Davenport, Gloria McAdams, Ed McAdams, Irene Potter, Dee Bellows, Clayton WhiteheadSeated, from left: Dottie “2” L’Heureux, Jayne Witt, Bob Bellows

Those Boots are Made for Walkin’…

A teenage boy had just passed his driving test  and  inquired  of  his  father  as  to  when they  could  discuss  his  use  of  the  car.  His father  said  he’d  make  a  deal  with  his  son: “You  bring  your  grades  up  from  a  C  to  a  B average,  study  your  Bible  a  little,  and  get your hair cut. Then we’ll talk about the car.”

The boy thought about that for a moment, decided  he’d  settle  for  the  offer,  and  they agreed on it. After about six weeks his father said,  “Son,  you’ve  brought  your  grades up  and  I’ve  observed  that  you  have  been studying  your  Bible,  but  I’m  disappointed you haven’t had your hair cut.

The  boy  said, “You  know,  Dad,  I’ve  been thinking about that, and I’ve noticed in my studies  of  the  Bible  that  Samson  had  long hair,  John  the  Baptist  had  long  hair,  Moses had  long  hair…  and  there’s  even  strong evidence that Jesus had long hair.”

You’re going to love the Dad’s reply: “Did you also notice they all walked everywhere they went?”

Hotel/Motel ScamThis is kinda scary if only because of how

simple  it  is.  You  arrive  at  your  hotel  and check in at the front desk. When checking in, you give the front desk your credit card (for your  room  charges). You  get  to  your  room and settle in.

Someone  calls  the  front  desk  and  asks (for example) for Room 620 (which happens to be your room). Your phone rings in your room.  You  answer  and  the  person  on  the other end says, “This is the front desk. When you  were  checking  in,  we  came  across  a problem with your charge card information. Please re-read me your credit card number and  verify  the  3  digit  security  code  on  the back  of  your  card.”  Not  thinking  anything amiss,  you  might  give  this  person  your information,  since  the  call  seems  to  come from the front desk. But actually, it is a scam, operated  by  someone  calling  from  outside the hotel/front desk. They ask for a random room  number. Then  when  you  answer,  the

caller  asks  you  for  credit  card  information, sounding  so  professional  that  you  think you are talking to the front desk. If you ever encounter  this  problem  on  your  vacation, tell  the  caller  that  you  will  immediately come down to the front desk to clear up any problems. Then, go to the front desk and ask if  there  was  a  problem.  If  there  was  none, inform the hotel manager.

Be Careful Who You Mess With! My wife and I were traveling by car  from

Victoria  to  Prince  George.  Being  seniors, after  almost  eleven  hours  on  the  road,  we were  too tired to continue, and decided to take a room. When we checked out the next day, the clerk handed us a bill for $350.00.

I  exploded  and  demanded  to  know  why the  charge  was  so  high.  I  told  the  clerk although it’s a nice hotel, the rooms certainly aren’t  worth  $350.00  a  night.  I  insisted  on speaking to the Manager.

The  Manager  appeared,  listened  to  me, and  then  explained  that  the  hotel  had  an Olympic-sized pool and a huge conference centre that were available for us to use.

“But we didn’t use them,” I said. ‘’Well, they

are here, and you could have,” explained the Manager.

He went on to explain that we could also have  taken  in  one  of  the  shows  for  which the  hotel  is  famous.  “We  have  the  best entertainers from New York , Hollywood and Las Vegas perform here,” the Manager said.

“But we didn’t go to any of those shows,” I  said. “Well,  we  have  them,  and  you  could have,” the Manager replied.

No  matter  what  amenity  the  Manager mentioned,  I  replied, ”But we didn’t use  it!” The Manager was unmoved, and eventually I gave up and agreed to pay. I wrote a check and gave it to the Manager.

The  Manager  was  surprised  when  he looked  at  the  check.  “But  sir,  this  check  is only made out  for $50.00.” ‘’That’s correct.  I charged  you  $300.00  for  sleeping  with  my wife,”  I  replied. “But  I  didn’t!”  exclaimed  the Manager.

I  said, “Well,  too  bad,  she  was  here,  and you could have.”

The moral of the story: Never mess with folks who have been around the block more times than you have. They’ll get you every time.

Peter, Paul, Chester & Sue takes  you all  around  Plumas  County,  staying  in mountain  towns  and  enjoying  small  town entertainment.  Even  with  door-to-door service  included,  it’s  only  about  $250  a day.  If  you’ve  never  explored  this  part  of California,  you  couldn’t  pick  a  better  time. Hot  temperatures  and  summer  crowds  will be history and you’ll benefit. Too early for fall colors, but also too early for snow. Fair trade.

Next  is  The Santa Cruz Follies. A longtime favorite of SL Travelers, it’s a talent show  with  all  mature  performers,  over  the age of 50.  If you watch America’s Got Talent on TV, you know age has nothing to do with talent. You don’t have to be 18 to sing and dance and entertain people. That’s what this show is about. Throw in a ride through the redwoods on the Big Trees Railroad and an overnight  stay  in  a  beautiful  Hilton  Hotel in  Scotts  Valley  and  you  have  a  delightful overnight getaway.

Finally there is Flying High Over Cowboy Country. You  ride  to  Elko  on  Amtrak’s

California Zephyr,  a  beautiful  ride  through the afternoon and evening. Then stay three nights  at  a  top  notch  Red  Lion  Inn,  with  a casino  no  less  (only  one  hotel,  no  packing and  unpacking). The  balloon  festival,  while smaller  than  some,  will  offer  plenty  of opportunity  to  “see  them  fly”  and  maybe even  climb  aboard  one  yourself.  That  trip offers  the  train  ride,  the  balloons  and  local sightseeing,  featuring  a  visit  to  the  huge Newmont  mining  operation  and  the  fire training  center.  Both  are  pretty  interesting. Scott Angeletti will be hosting this trip and he  has  room  for  a  few  more  from  his “fan club.”

So,  remember  all  you “last  minute”  folks out  there,  that  even  these  short  trips  have to be finalized three weeks before departure and while we will try to get you if you wait until  the  week  before,  in  reality  it’s  a  lot  of work and we’d sure appreciate it if you could call  just  a  little  sooner.  If  you  find  you  can go  at  the  last  minute,  heck,  we’d  still  love to have you on any trip. Just makes the staff beat their heads against the wall. As long as it’s their own office… just kidding.

Chris Galloway and  I (Mark) will  be hosting  our  “every  three  years”  journey along  Route 66 in  early  October.  We  are taking  a maximum  of 25,  so  there are only 4  spots  available.  It  will  make  your  all-time top five, I promise you. Only 150 miles a day on average,  lots of  two night stays, dozens

of  unique  people and  places  you would  never  find on  your  own.  Plus, the  joy  of  traveling “The  Main  Street of  America.”  Not to  mention  a  treat from  Fred  Drewes Frozen  Custard  in St. Louis and dinner in  the  Turquoise Room  at La Posada in  Arizona.  Oops,  I mentioned  them. Darn. You could be

there in person. If you think you’d like to take the trip, or even half of it, call me at the office and I’ll tell you all about it.

Odds and Ends, Mostly Ends… Our money  guy  in  the  office,  Bob Veliky, has asked me to remind all of you to first contact him directly if you ever see a charge on your account  from  Sports Leisure that  appears incorrect.  Bob  says  it’s  way  easier  to  clear those  things  up  person  to  person.  I’ll  take his  word  for  it…  Hope  to  see  you  at  Tour Preview Day… And so it goes…
