SLIP Connection Setup FOR WINDOWS 98 & XP

1. WINDOWS 98 SET-UP PROCEDURE

1.1 from the Windows 98 Desktop click on the button and select Control Panel;

1.2 in the Control Panel window double click on the Modems icon 1.3 in the Modem Properties window General tab click on Add…


1. WINDOWS 98 SET-UP PROCEDURE 1.4 in the Install New Modem window select “Other” and then click Next >

1.5 select “Don’t detect my modem; I will select it from a list” and then click Next >

1.6 select “Standard 28800 bps Modem” from the Models list and then click Next >


1. WINDOWS 98 SET-UP PROCEDURE 1.7 click on the Communications Port (COM1) that will be used to connect the PC to the Advent xt system and then click Next >

1.8 click Finish.


1. WINDOWS 98 SET-UP PROCEDURE 1.9 in Modem Properties window General tab select your newly created modem from the list and click Properties.

1.10 in the Standard 28800 bps Modem Properties window General tab select 38400 Maximum speed from the drop down list box.


1. WINDOWS 98 SET-UP PROCEDURE 1.11 click on the Connection tab and select: Data Bits = 8, Parity = None and Stop bits = 1 from the drop down list boxes.

1.12 click on Advanced… to open the Advanced Connection Settings window and deselect “Use flow control” and then click OK

1.13 click OK in the “Standard 28800 bps Modem Properties window” and click on Close in the “Modem Properties” window.

1.14 on the Windows 98 Desktop double click on “My Computer”

1.15 in the My Computer window double click on “Dial-Up Networking”

1.16 in the Dial-Up Networking window double click on “Make New Connection”


1. WINDOWS 98 SET-UP PROCEDURE 1.17 in the Make New Connection window type Slip Connection in the name of the computer you are dialling box and select “Standard 28800 bps Modem” from the drop down list box and then click Next >

1.18 check the Area code box is blank, enter 123456 in the Telephone number box and then click Next >

1.19 click Finish.


1. WINDOWS 98 SET-UP PROCEDURE 1.20 in the Dial-Up Networking window right click on your newly created “Slip Connection” icon and click on Properties.

1.21 in the Slip Connection window General tab deselect use dialling rules and make sure that the correct modem is selected in the “Connect Using” box

1.22 click on the “Server Types” tab and select “SLIP Unix Connection” from the Type of Dial-Up Server drop down list box. Click on TCP/IP Settings…


1. WINDOWS 98 SET-UP PROCEDURE 1.23 in the TCP/IP Settings window select “Specify an IP address” and enter the IP address 172.16.1.2 in the box. Deselect “Use IP header compression” and click OK.

1.24 click OK to close the Slip Connection window. 1.25 close all other Windows and return to the Windows 98 Desktop. 1.26 you now need to create a Scrip File – see below;

1.27 from the Windows 98 Desktop click on the button and select Accessories then Notepad;


1. WINDOWS 98 SET-UP PROCEDURE 1.28 in the Notepad window enter the following text; ; ; This is a dummy script file ; to establish a slip connection with a host. ; ; Main entry point to script ; proc main endproc

1.29 click on File then select Save As…


1. WINDOWS 98 SET-UP PROCEDURE 1.30 enter the File name: Null.scp and click Save. Note, save this file in a C: location where it will not get deleted.

1.31 return to the Slip Connection window (via My Computer/Dial-up Networking/Make New Connection) and click on the Scripting tab then click Browse.

1.32 select your newly created Null script file and click Open;


1. WINDOWS 98 SET-UP PROCEDURE 1.33 check the “Script file” File name: is Null.scp and click OK.

1.34 close all Windows and return to the Windows 98 Desktop.

1.35 from the Desktop click on the button and select Control Panel.

1.36 in the Control Panel window double click on the Internet Options icon 1.37 in the Internet Properties window General tab set your home page address to; http://172.16.2.1/index.html


1. WINDOWS 98 SET-UP PROCEDURE 1.38 in the Connections tab check the Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings box has “Slip Connection (Default)” selected and the “Always dial my default connection” is set.

1.39 click OK and close all other Windows. 1.40 your SLIP Connection is now set-up. For details on using the SLIP connection see the Advent xt Programming Manual (Tynetec Doc No. FM0411).


2. WINDOWS XP SET-UP PROCEDURE

2.1 from the Windows XP Desktop click on the button and select Control Panel;

2.2 set the Control Panel to classic view;

2.3 in the Control Panel double click on the Phone and Modem Options icon 2.4 in the Phone and Modem Options window click on the Modems tab;


2. WINDOWS XP SET-UP PROCEDURE 2.5 in the Modems tab click on Add…

2.6 in the Add Hardware Wizard select “Don’t detect my modem; I will select from a list” then click Next >


2. WINDOWS XP SET-UP PROCEDURE 2.7 select “Standard 28800 bps Modem” from the Models list box and then click Next >

2.8 set “Selected Ports” and click on the COM port that you are using to connect the Advent xt. Please note that COM3 is usually the internal modem and COM4 onwards are USB modems. Click Next >

IMPORTANT: if no COM ports are listed please check you have your USB to Serial Converter installed correctly.


2. WINDOWS XP SET-UP PROCEDURE 2.9 click Finish.

2.10 in the Phone and Modem Options window Modem tab select you’re newly created modem in the list and click Properties.


2. WINDOWS XP SET-UP PROCEDURE 2.11 in the Standard 28800 bps Modem Properties window click on the Modem tab and select a Maximum Port Speed of 38400 from the drop down list and click OK;

2.12 click on the Advanced tab and click on Change Default Preferences…


2. WINDOWS XP SET-UP PROCEDURE 2.13 in the Standard 28800 bps Modem Default Preferences window check that the Port Speed is 38400 and that Flow Control is set as None.

2.14 click on the Advanced tab and check that Data Bits: is 8, Parity: is None and Stop Bits: is 1.

2.15 click OK on the Standard 28800 bps Modem Default Preferences window, then click OK on the Standard 28800 bps Modem Properties window and finally click OK the Phone and Modem Options window.


2. WINDOWS XP SET-UP PROCEDURE

2.16 in the Control Panel double click on Network Connections icon 2.17 in the Network Connections window click on “Create a new connection”

2.18 in the New Connection Wizzard window click Next >


2. WINDOWS XP SET-UP PROCEDURE 2.19 in the New Connection Wizard select “Connect to the Internet” and click Next >

2.20 select “Set up my connection manually” and click Next >


2. WINDOWS XP SET-UP PROCEDURE 2.21 select “Connect using a dial up Modem” and click Next >

2.22 enter the ISP name as “Slip Connection” and click Next >


2. WINDOWS XP SET-UP PROCEDURE 2.23 enter the Phone number: as “123456” and click Next >

2.24 select “Anyone’s use” and click Next >


2. WINDOWS XP SET-UP PROCEDURE 2.25 enter the User name: as “Tynetec Limited” and deselect “Use this account name and password when anyone connects to the internet from this computer” then click Next >

2.26 click Finish.


2. WINDOWS XP SET-UP PROCEDURE 2.27 in the Connect Slip Connection window click on Properties;

2.28 in the Slip Connection Properties window General tab click on Configure…


2. WINDOWS XP SET-UP PROCEDURE 2.29 in the Modem Configuration window check the Maximum speed is set at 38400 bps and all other check boxes are deselected, then click OK;

2.30 in the Slip Connection Properties window deselect “Use dialling rules”


2. WINDOWS XP SET-UP PROCEDURE 2.31 click on the Networking tab and select “SLIP Unix Connection” from the “Type of dial-up server I am calling” drop down list box. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) from “This connection uses the following items” list then click Properties.

2.32 select “Use the following IP address” and enter 172.16.1.2. Check that the “Preferred DNS server:” and “Alternate DNS server:” boxes are blank then click Advanced…


2. WINDOWS XP SET-UP PROCEDURE 2.33 in the Advanced TCP/IP Settings window General tab select “Use default gateway on remote network” and deselect “Use IP header compression. Set the “Frame size:” to 1006 from the drop down box.

2.34 click OK on the Advanced TCP/IP Settings window, click OK on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window and click OK on the Slip Connection Properties window. Close all other Windows.

2.35 from Control Panel double click on the Internet Options icon 2.36 in the Internet Properties window General tab set your Home page Address as; http://172.16.2.1/index.html


2. WINDOWS XP SET-UP PROCEDURE 2.37 click on the Connections tab and check the “Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings” is set as Slip Connection (Default) and select “Always dial the default connection” then click OK;

2.38 close the Control Panel and return to the Windows XP Desktop. 2.39 your SLIP Connection is now set-up. For details on using the SLIP connection see the Advent xt Programming Manual (Tynetec Doc No. FM0411).
