ALEXANDRA JAMIESON DOMESTIC CATS IN IRELAND - AN ANCIENT DNA STUDY

6.30pm IT Sligo, Room A0005 Public Event (All Ages)

Cats are one of the most popular pets in Ireland today, yet we know very little about how and when they got here. What we do know is the domestic cat spread across Europe starting in the Neolithic, with an increase in intensity around the Roman period and then again in the Medieval period with maritime transport. What is unknown is how and when they arrived to Ireland. This talk will go into exploring how DNA can help us understand more about their arrival.

Alex is a PhD researcher at the University of Oxford. She works on ancient DNA in the field of Archaeology. Her current research is looking at animals which have been moved around by people.

IT Sligo Science, Engineering and technology departments have placed Science & Technology objects or challenges in shop windows in Sligo City Centre. Can you find them all and solve the puzzles?

Pick up a map from shops or download the map from WWW.ITSLIGO.IE/SCIENCEWEEK and start the hunt. Once you complete the trail, drop your completed maps into one of Fabio’s Ice cream shop in Quayside shopping centre to enter the prize winning draw.

Whilst dropping off your map why not ask Fabio about The Science of Ice Cream –If you think about it, an ice cream is actually quite a complex and multi-faceted composition – it should be solid, yet soft, and should stay that way while melting slowly. The reasons for the delicate and mesmerising nature of ice cream is ultimately a matter of food chemistry! Drop into one of Fabio’s Ice cream shops on Wine Street or Quayside shopping centre, Sligo during the Science Festival and ask our Ice Cream Scientist a question.
