IIMANIIMAN is “Belief or Faith” to something beyond sense

perception, termed as “ - al-ghayb” meaning “the

unseen”.

It is derived from the root word “ ” which also means

“safety, peace, security, protection”

It denote: “certainty of the ultimate truth”, adherence to it

instils sense of “security in him” from doubts, uncertainty,

restlessness etc.


Yet from Islamic perspective “iiman” cannot be by mere blind

acceptance devoid of proof or substantiation i.e. Believe or

faith must be with knowledge.


"And do not follow (pursue) anything of which thou "And do not follow (pursue) anything of which thou

hast no knowledge: verily (thy) hearing and sight hast no knowledge: verily (thy) hearing and sight

Man’s knowledge is only regarding what has happened or is happening.Man’s knowledge is only regarding what has happened or is happening.

suffice him. Verily! Allah brings His command to

pass. Allah hath set appointed (term and) measure

(QADRA) for all things.”

(Qur’an: Talaq: 65: 2-3)


We cannot claim to know the knowledge that is with Allah We cannot claim to know the knowledge that is with Allah

Only when it has occurred can we then say “Only when it has occurred can we then say “this is in this is in

accordance with the Eternal pre-existing knowledge of accordance with the Eternal pre-existing knowledge of

AllahAllah ((QadrQadr)”. )”.

Before it has happened we Before it has happened we cannot say cannot say something is something is

already predestined - to do so would still be only mere already predestined - to do so would still be only mere

speculation.speculation.


And Allah’s knowledge And Allah’s knowledge includesincludes the cause and effect of the cause and effect of

how things occur. And in this ‘how things occur. And in this ‘cause and effectcause and effect’ lies our ’ lies our

responsibility, because there are free-will which we are responsibility, because there are free-will which we are

given to exercise therein.given to exercise therein.

Allah will not hold us responsible for causes which are Allah will not hold us responsible for causes which are

beyond our control. Yet, these other causes (beyond our beyond our control. Yet, these other causes (beyond our

control) may affect our life and destiny in this world too.control) may affect our life and destiny in this world too.


Thus, even if we have done our best exercising “Thus, even if we have done our best exercising “ikhtiyar ikhtiyar ”, ”,

yet what is destined to occur in this life, may not always be yet what is destined to occur in this life, may not always be

pleasant and good.pleasant and good.


Therefore, it is foolish to say: “Well if things is going to

happen according to what Allah has fixed, so ‘que sera sera!’

what will be will be” and you chose to do nothing.

(JABARIYAH)

Also, it is foolish to expect that after you have put in every

effort, that things will occur exactly as you hope, as though

other factors beyond your control cannot affect your life in

this temporary world !

(QODARIYAH)


Therefore, it is foolish to say: “Well if things is going

to happen according to what Allah has fixed, so ‘que

sera sera!’ what will be will be” and you chose to do

nothing. (Jabariyah)

Also, it is foolish to expect that after you have put in

every effort, things will occur exactly as you hope, as

though other factors beyond your control cannot

affect your life! (Qodariyah)82
