Ylva the elfYlva is not your average factory elf. She is curious, determined, kind, resourceful and easily distracted, especially when she she thinks she can improve something. Although elves are immortal and ageless, Ylva resembles a 9-year old girl.

On the first of December, a group of elves arrive at the North Pole to start work at Santa’s factory. Among them is Ylva, more curious and alert than your average obedient factory elf. After a few days avoiding trouble, she starts noticing strange things: letters aren’t being opened and presents aren’t being delivered. Before she can investigate further, she accidentally finds herself ejected from the factory and dumped outside.

She is taken into a barn by Comet, the last of Santa’s reindeer. He tells his tale: many years ago after a particularly stressful Christmas, Santa went on holiday and never returned. The other reindeer went off to seek fame and fortune in show-biz. Parents had to take over gift delivery and dress up up as Santa. The magic of Christmas died.

Rudolph is following the news on TV. Wanting to help, he learns a horrible truth. McScrump’s plan all along was to get Santa and the reindeer out of the way so he could profit by selling cheap Santa costumes to unwitting parents. Santa is stuck on a desert island, his magic clock being used to fool him into thinking no time has passed. Angry, Rudolph escapes and rescues Santa. They join the marooned crew of the zeppelin and start deliveries again. After a final showdown with McScrump, the crew of Santa’s Sled Zeppelin succeed in delivering presents to children all over the world. Ylva and Comet have brought back the magic of Christmas!

Ylva decides to bring back the magic. She will deliver presents with Comet, converting Santa’s rusty old sled into an airship-powered Sled Zeppelin. With help from other factory elves they start construction and testing.They also re-recruit Santa’s old reindeer. All except for Rudolph, whose agent, Shady McScrump simply won’t allow it.

Ylva, Comet, the reindeer and the elves carry on regardless. As they they switch on the sled, Nasa’s “Santa Tracker” activates. The whole world sits up: Christmas is back! Throw out your santa outfits! But on their way to the first delivery, disaster strikes and the zeppelin crash lands in the ocean. All seems lost.

THE STORY

The other elves Santa’s factory is reliant on elves who follow rules, directions, regulations and never step over the yellow safety lines. They are happy, obedient and want to do a good job. Supervisor elves with red tunics have clipboards and an authority complex.

Rudolph and the other Reindeer When Santa disappeared, Rudolph accepted offer to host a daily show on daytime TV. Addicted to fame and manipulated by his agent his magic has faded: he wears a fake red nose and hasn’t flown for years. The other reindeer were not so successful: they perform in matinee dance shows, present terrible TV programmes, racing sleds. Other than Rudolph, they are all desperate to go back to Christmas deliveries.

Shady McScrump The main antagonist. He always hated Christmas. Locked in a perpetual cycle of being naughty, he only got lumps of coal. He owns Santa’s holiday island and controls Rudolph. With them out of the way, he can ensure maximum profits by selling cheap santa outfits, santa hats and plastic reindeer antlers to parents every year.

Comet the Reindeer. Comet is the only reindeer left at Santa’s factory. He lives in an old barn outside the factory in the hope that Santa, his old reindeer friends and the magic of Christmas will one day come back.

Santa Long ago, after a particularly busy, stressful and tense Christmas, Santa booked a holiday to a desert island, completely lost track of time, and never returned.
