19TH CENTURY SLAVERY IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

• After the United Kingdom’s abolition of the slave trade in the 19th century, British ships were no longer allowed to transport African slaves

THE END OF SLAVERY IN THE U.S.A.

• In 1863, the US government banned all slavery, and the Northern Union States won the war in 1865

WHAT IS ONE MAJOR EXAMPLE OF THE CHANGE SINCE THE TIME OF SLAVERY?

• One major example of the change since the time of slavery is the election of Barack Obama as president in 2008

TIMELINE OF SLAVERY AND THE SLAVERY

• 1502- First reported African slaves are taken to the New World

• 1562- John Hawkins becomes the first British slave trader

• 1619- The first Africans are taken to the British North American colonies

• 1699- About 80% of the Caribbean population is enslaved Africans

• 1789- One of the first slave autobiographies, by Olaudah Equiano

• 1791- The British Parliament rejects William Wilber forces a bill to abolish the slave trade

• 1793- US inventor Eli invents the cotton gin

• 1794- The United States prohibits new slave boats from being equipped in US ports

• 1807- Slavery and the transatlantic slave trade are abolished in Britain

• 1808- The United States bans the importation of new slaves

• 1819- Britain stations a naval squadron on the West African coast to patrol against illegal slavers

• 1820- US law makes slave trading piracy, and therefore those found guilty will face the DEATH PENALTY

• 1833- The British Parliament abolishes slavery in all its colonies

• 1839- The Amistad slave boat rebellion occurs

• 1849- Harriet Tubman escapes from the South to the North and establishes the Underground Railroad

• 1858- William Yancey publicizes a confederacy of southern states

• 1860- Southern states start to secede (separate) from the northern Union States

• 1861- The US Civil War begins

• 1863- The Emancipation Proclamation is issued by President Abraham Lincoln, declaring that all slaves in the parts of the United States rebelling against the Union are free

• 1865- Slavery is banned in the United States
