Reviewers’ Roundtable

The following quotes were pulled from AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists’ full reviews in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of each of this weekend’s new releases.

‘The Bourne Legacy’*

Jeremy Renner plays a genetically modified killer who, upon the execution of a top-secret government program’s plan to wipe out all such operatives it created, must flee in order to save his life. (PG-13 – 135 minutes)

*Screened after deadline.

‘The Campaign’*

Will Ferrell plays a long-term congressman who commits a major public gaffe before an upcoming election, prompting a pair of ultra-wealthy CEOs to put up a rival candidate (Zach Galifianakis) and gain influence over their North Carolina district. (R – 97 minutes)

*Screened after deadline.

‘Dark Horse’

Jordan Gelber plays an avid toy collector who falls for a depressed woman on the rebound (Selma Blair). Moving out of his junior high school bedroom proves too much for the man and, as a result, tragedy ensues. (NR – 86 minutes)

Joseph: “According to Merriam-Webster, the term ‘dark horse refers to ‘a usually little known contender that makes an unexpectedly good showing.’ Had writer/director Todd Solondz stuck to that definition, his new dramedy ‘Dark Horse’ may have been a real winner. Unfortunately, after a strong start, the flick quickly falls behind, contradicting said

definition as its protagonist is shown to be so utterly unlikeable that nobody in their right mind would ever root for him to succeed.” Grade: D

‘Hope Springs’*

Meryl Streep plays a woman who persuades her skeptical husband (Tommy Lee Jones) to attend a week of couples counseling with a renowned marriage specialist (Steve Carell). (PG-13 – 121 minutes)

*Screened after deadline.

‘The Imposter’

A 13-year-old boy disappears without a trace from his home in San Antonio, Texas. Three and a half years later, he is found alive thousands of miles away in a village in southern Spain. His family is overjoyed to bring him home but all is not quite as it seems. (R – 91 minutes)

Stan: “It’s been quite some time since the ‘drama’ in the coined word ‘docudrama’ takes center stage. That’s exactly the thought as filmmaker Bart Layton’s story unfolds because in the back of ones mind lays

the underlying thought that, it is a documentary which‘provides a factual record or report’ and ‘The Imposter’ raised those hairs on the back my neck…” Grade: B

Joseph: “‘The Imposter’ is a drastically different documentary. That is to say that instead of choosing a topic that is merely timely and/or popular, filmmaker Bart Layton digs a little deeper to unearth a real-life mystery, thereby making for a much more unique motion picture. Moreover, Layton astutely avoids exploiting a story that is already sensational enough, allowing its inherently interesting twists and turns to titillate the viewer.” Grade: B

‘Nitro Circus: The Movie 3D’*

Travis Pastrana and his friends travel around the world setting up outrageous stunts and pushing the human body to the limit, constantly looking to innovate the world of action sports. (PG-13 – 88 minutes)

*Not made available for review.

‘The Queen of Versailles’

Follows billionaires Jackie and David Siegel’s rags-to-riches story to uncover the innate virtues and flaws of the American dream. (PG – 100 minutes)

Stan: “Triggering thoughts of the ‘economic crunch’, we feel and certainly know of circumstances in our own orbits as the effects are readily experienced. Filmmaker Lauren Greenfield’s documentary, the winner of theU.S. Directing Award at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, gives a first hand view of how the ‘trickle down effect’ as the economically affected upper-class status of Jackie and David Siegel with the slow and certainly sure change in their lifestyle and dreams, and its effect on their company employees, household staff, and, their children.” Grade: B+

Joseph: “‘The Queen of Versailles’ feels less like a documentary than it does an overlong episode of a reality show that you would never admit to actually watching. That is to say that filmmaker Lauren Greenfield’s new movie spends too much time making a spectacle out of how the ‘other half’ lives and too little time extracting any

insight out of it. On the other hand, it is – at the very least – an interesting project. Moreover, its best moments are those in which Greenfield shows, be it coincidental or not, that some problems are more universal than we ever thought possible.” Grade: C

‘UltraStar Exclusive: Trishna’

Freida Pinto plays a woman who meets the wealthy son (Riz Ahem) of a property developer and eventually accepts his efforts to win her affection. But when the two move to Mumbai and become a couple, the man’s deep family bond threatens the young lovers’ bliss. (R – 108 minutes)

Joseph: “‘Trishna’ is a transporting look at life in modern day India but an insipid interpretation of its source material. Writer/director Michael Winterbottom tries to pack as much of Thomas Hardy’s classic novel ‘Tess of the d’Urbervilles’ into his new romantic drama as physically possible. However, rather than picking up the pace, the approach strangely slows it down to a near crawl as Winterbottom essentially takes the emotional depth and complexity out of each plot point,

leaving viewers with an extremely shallow summary of the story.” Grade: D

Soundbite Spotlight

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf movies recently released in theaters or video on demand.

Actor Kevin Heffernan (‘The Babymakers’)

By Joseph J. Airdo

In “The Babymakers,” which opened last weekend, Paul Schneider plays a man who, after trying everything to get his wife (Olivia Munn) pregnant, realizes that he may be “shooting blanks.” Kevin Heffernan plays one of the man’s friends who helps him rob a sperm bank where he made a deposit years ago

“We are not real actors; we’re just a bunch of clowns. One of the screenwriters – Peter Gaulke – is a friend of Jay and I. I had been in another movie he had written called ‘Strange Wilderness.’ At the time that he had written this script, he and his wife were trying to have a baby. He gave it to us and we thought that it just had such a real sense of humor.

“I enjoy any scene where it is just us guys hanging out and cracking each other up. This movie has a different kind of heart sensibility to it – at least more so than the Broken Lizard ones. But I still got to play the Broken Lizard character. I play the big, dumb, doofusy buddy who is causing all of the problems.

“The scene where I am rolling around in the sperm bank … that was actually Jay’s semen. He had assembled a large portion and... no, it was really a fine concoction of various lotions. We

used a stuntman for the falling down so that part was not me. I just got to roll around in it. I went home that night smelling wonderful with soft skin.” – Kevin Heffernan

Filmmaker Bart Layton (‘The Imposter’)

By Joseph J. Airdo

Continued on Page 12...

Bet You Didn’t Know!

Tommy Lee Jones hates clothing labels. During filming‘Men in Black II’ (2002), his publicist assembled the entire crew and told them to get rid of all t-shirts and any visible clothing labels because if he saw them he would walk off the set!

“We did a great deal of research, which involved devouring news archive, police reports, the FBI files – which we were able to obtain under the Freedom of Information Act – but ultimately nothing can quite prepare you for what the individual contributors or interviewees are going to tell you. Seeing the cold chronology of events in black and white is very different from hearing the raw emotional accounts from all of the key people involved with this extraordinary story and that, to me, was where the real story was.

“Every person we talked to seemed to have their own version of events and all of them as believable – yet implausible – as each other. I would go from one interview one day convinced that I understood precisely what had happened to the next interview the following day from which I would come away with the diametrically opposite conclusion.

“So the big question as a filmmaker was how to tell a story where the truth was rather elusive. My solution was to try to take the audience on a

journey – as twisting and turning as the one we experienced in making the film – embarking on every character’s journey with them, embracing their subjective realities; a journey upon which we lurched from one version of the truth to another, from sympathy to condemnation and back again.” – Bart Layton

Motocross Champion Jolene Van Vugt (‘Nitro Circus: The Movie 3D’)

By Joseph J. Airdo

“I was fairly injured for most of the filming so, unfortunately, I was not able to do a lot of the stunts that I had originally planned to do in the film. I had to have a complete shoulder reconstruction a few weeks before we started filming so I was actually sitting on the sidelines quite a bit, admiring the stunts that the boys were getting to do.

“For a lot of the stunts that I ended up doing in the movie, I actually had my arm duct-taped to my body just so I could make it happen. That definitely makes it harder so, when you are not able to take the hits, you end up not being able to be a part of a lot of things. I was happy cheering on the guys as they got to do some of the really awesome, cool stunts.

“Part of our industry and part of what happens with Nitro Circus is that we all kind of take our turns at getting injuries. Unfortunately, this injury, for me, came at a really inappropriate time for the filming of the movie but it is just kind of what we do. One of the coolest stunts in the movie that I was very jealous of not getting to do was a BASE jump off of a blob on the top of the Hightower Building.” – Jolene Van Vugt

Actor Cillian Murphy (‘Red Lights’)

By Joseph J. Airdo

In “Red Lights,” which opened last weekend, Cillian Murphy plays the assistant of a psychologist (Sigourney Weaver) who studies paranormal activity. This eventually leads them to investigate a world-renowned psychic (Robert De Niro) who has resurfaced years after his toughest critic mysteriously passed away.

“To me, this film is about a guy who goes on a journey of self-acceptance. It is also a film about obsession. I think that everybody is familiar with obsession and, in playing this part, I guess I saw how we are all susceptible to it and how knowing and accepting yourself is a very important thing. The script was unusual and surprising and refreshing.

“[Sigourney Weaver and Robert De Niro] are legends to anyone of my generation. It was a huge honor to get to work with them – particularly with Sigourney. It was important that we had a warmth in our relationship for the story to work. Luckily, we really clicked together. She is such a wonderful lady – a very funny lady and a very caring person – so we got along great.

S“[Rodrigo Cortés] is a real talent. To see somebody who has the understanding of the vernacular of film so early in his career is astonishing. I thought that ‘Buried’ was an amazing achievement for him as a director. You always want to work with someone who has a strong vision or a strong voice. He has both.” – Cillian Murphy

Writer/Actress Zoe Kazan (‘Ruby Sparks’)

By Stan Robinson

In “Ruby Sparks,” which opened last weekend, Paul Dano plays a young novelist who is struggling with his writing – as well as his romantic life – and creates a character who inspires him. However, when he finds said character in the flesh – sitting on his couch – he is completely flabbergasted. In addition to playing the title character, ZoeKazan also wrote the screenplay.

“There were little things that sort of ‘sparked’ my inspiration to write the story. It came to me unbidden and uncalled for. My mom always said you have to be the person raising your hand for inspiration to start to come to you, and raising your hand is like being willing to do the work. I feel like I was really ready to write, and one

morning I woke of with a piece of it, go figure!

On having her words interpreted by a director creating visuals different than those she may have had while creating her story… “I think that’s the joy of filmmaking, if I just wanted my words to be taken at face value, I would write novels. I think that the ‘thought interplay’ of you inspiring me and I inspire you and the thought goes back and forth is what I live for. It’s my favorite part of the process actually. My job as a writer is to create that inspiration, be that catalyst for the director, for the actors.

“Jon (Dayton) and Val (Faris) [the directors] gave me notes and I rewrote for them in a process that took about nine months leading up to production so that by the time we were in production I really knew what kind of movie they wanted to make and it was very easy for me to let go.” – Zoe Kazan

long looking at issues around wealth and the culture of materialism and consumerism, and actually met Jackie (Siegel) really randomly when I was photographing Donatella Versace. I was following her and Jackie was one of Donatella’s best customers at the time, and she told me about building the biggest house in America.

“I went to photograph her (Jackie Siegel) in Florida and I saw the house ‘Versailles’ in construction and saw the house they were living in, spending sometime with Jackie and her family, and fell in love with the whole setting.

I was interested in showing the reality of what that kind of wealth was like because we live in a culture that’s so obsessed with a kind of sensationalism or idealization of

wealth in reality TV and lot of the kind of pop figures that we see. I was interested in the relationship between that house and the American dream, and how ‘our houses’ is the expression of the American dream. In the boom it had gotten bigger and bigger, and in the foreclosure crises, everyone, including the very rich, were drastically affected. And as you know, the house was never finished…” – Lauren Greenfield

Arizona State Poker ChampionshipGet ready to ante up for the Arizona State Poker Championship as this No Limit Texas Hold’ Em tournament makes its return to Talking Stick Resort this weekend for the 8th year in a row beginning Fri Aug 10th thru Tues Aug 14th.

This prestigious tournament draws more than 1,000 poker amateurs and professionals from Arizona and across the country all competing for a share of the $1 million prize pool.

“The Arizona State Poker Championship is a big source of pride for us. It’s our biggest event and continues to grow each

year,” said Kent Odekirk, director of poker at Talking Stick Resort. “Because of the large prize pool and our top-notch facility, the championship has grown from mostly local players to a competition of the best in the west.”

An annual fixture on the resort’s poker room schedule, the State Championship attracts players with hopes of hitting it big. This year marks the third time in the state championship’s history that the prize pool has hit $1 million - ensuring the top 100 players pocket at least $2,250! The Tournament Champion takes home over $200,000, a championship ring and trophy! The 2nd and 3rd place winners rake in $127,500 and $85,000 respectively, as well as trophies to commemorate their win.

The 8th Annual Arizona State Poker Championship begins at 9am Friday kicking off 5 days of play in the ARENA Poker Room. Prior to this weekend, players had an opportunity to participate in daily satellite tournaments to “win a seat” in the state championship or they could opt to pay a $1,000 buy-in along with the $70 entry fee. The buy-in provides each player with $15,000 in tournament chips. Entries into the tournament are unlimited and players eliminated on day 1 or day 2 can re-buy in order to continue playing to reach the final table.

Poker is a sport where competitors draw on both mental strength and physical endurance - so Talking Stick Resort hosted

“Warm Up” Tournaments Aug 6-9 to give players some time to practice their poker faces, plus build up their skills and endurance before the big weekend.

“This year we have expanded the championship to run five days and have taken the final table into our showroom to allow for a larger viewing audience,” said Odekirk. “There is a certain prestige that comes from winning a big tournament in the state’s largest poker room, and we are always looking for ways to enhance that moment for our players.”

Over the course of the championship, a designated number of participants will play on days 1, 2 and 3 (Aug 10-12) until 6pm. Those days of play determine the semi-finalists, who play on day 4 (Mon, Aug 13th) until just 10 players remain. That brings us to day 5 – Tuesday August 14th where the final 10 will play until a champion is crowned.

For the first time since the inception of the championship, the final table will be played in the resort’s showroom and broadcasted throughout the property. The Showroom at Talking Stick Resort offers state-of-the-art sound and lighting, which will greatly enhance the overall thrill and intensity of the last day.

Also adding to the excitement, this year - Talking Stick Resort welcomes special guest, Tiffany Michelle, who was named one of Maxim Magazines’ Top 20 Hottest Celebrity Poker Players of 2012! Tiffany will take the Showroom stage to host the

final round of the Championships. This very talented lady holds the record for the largest field a female has ever conquered in a live poker tournament, when she finished in 17th place out of 6,844 players and was the last woman standing at the 2008 World Series of Poker.

Women inspired by Michelle’s feats should know that The Arizona State Poker Championship isn’t the only exciting high-stakes event hitting The ARENA Poker Room at Talking Stick Resort. On September 8-10, the resort will also host the 6th Annual Arizona State Ladies Poker Championship. Pending her schedule, Tiffany Michelle is considering entering the tournament herself. If she does enter, she will join other poker queens competing for a share of an $80,000 prize pool, with first place taking home a grand prize of $18,649, a trophy and championship bracelet.

The top ten Ladies at the final table will each walk home with a minimum of $1,360.

Whether new to the game or a seasoned player, The Arizona State Poker Championship is the best platform for any gamer to try their luck or just hang out to catch all the action. For more information about the Arizona State Poker Championship and Talking Stick Resort’s other tournaments, visit the ARENA Poker Room or go on line at: www.TalkingStickResort.com or call (480) 850-7734.

August 24 - FnB Presents War of the Rosés – a Hog, a Blind Rosé Tasting and

Pork-fest

A couple of years ago, FnB restaurant co-owner Pavle Milic made national headlines when he hosted “The Judgment of Arizona,” a blind tasting of wines, pitting Arizona wines against wines of the same varietals from other regions. It was judged by a panel of local and national wine experts and they determined that Arizona wines could certainly compete.

“War of the Rosés,” will pit four Arizona Rosés against four rosés from California and other regions known for their rosés.

FnB co-owner, Chef Charleen Badman, plans to roast a pig which should pair nicely with the rosés. The pig

is currently being raised by Arizona winemaker Todd Bostock’s son Parker. Todd’s Dos Cabezas WineWorks “Pink” will be among the Arizona contenders.

Like the Judgment of Arizona, there will be wine experts on hand. Unlike the previous event, this one will also be open to the public, and the public gets to vote, too!

FnB has such a great following you generally need reservations on any night, so we highly recommend that you reserve your seat for this event early if you want to attend. The price for the event is $65 per person. Call (480) 425-9463 to reserve your spot today.

Celebration of Arizona Wine

The festival is preceded by a Grand Wine Tasting event on Friday, Nov. 16th at Quiessence Restaurant. This special evening is capped at 100 guests and includes presentation of winners of the 2012 Arizona Wine Competition followed by specially prepared dishes by Executive Chef Greg LaPrad paired with awarding-winning wines.

ITALIAN WINESBy Marlene P. Baumann

When we think of Italian wines, most of us have images of vibrant reds designed to go with popular and beloved Italian cuisine: spicy sauces and rich

meats in pasta dishes, or sharp, flavorful cheese and salty cured meats.

But what about the “Bianchi d’Italia” – the white wines of Italy? After all, the coastline of Italy runs long, bordering most of the country. With all that water nearby, Italians take an unstoppable approach to enjoying the sea. There, typical meals are dominated by seafood and paired with a variety of fine white Italian wines. It’s not just the seaside towns that showcase Italian white wines though. More traditionally, the top producers of whites were in the mountainous areas in the northeastern parts of Italy, such as Alto-Adige. Wines from those cooler areas tend to be lighter and crisper than those from the warm island climates, such as Sardinia.

Most of us would be hard-pressed to name some top producers of Italian whites. Recently I needed to purchase a Pinot Grigio for a friend. I stood in the aisle and stared. Not recognizing any producers, I did the intelligent thing and chose the bottle with prettiest label!

A more serious approach is to use today’s technology to browse listings of top-rated producers. There are many websites and electronic guides with this information. GamberoRosso is a fine example. No time to check it out in advance? Just describe the wine style you prefer to the wine staff and seek their guidance. Remember, whites fall into three main styles: 1) Light and Crisp, 2) Fruity and Smooth, and 3) Rich and Creamy.

Another way to select a good producer of Italian wine is to look for the pink strip on the bottle – usually it is affixed around the top. The pink strip will say DOC or DOCG, which means the wine was made in accordance with the specific Italian wine production laws and regulations for that zone-- often a sign of a solid winery.

Finally, I encourage you to try an Italian sparkling wine. Most of us have a “sweet” memory or two of Asti-Spumante. Today there are many lovely Italian sparklers that rival the best Champagnes. Try one for your next special occasion!

Someday I’ll own my own winery…Ever picture yourself sitting on the porch in a rocking chair, sipping a glass of wine made from the fruits of your own labor and the grapes of your very own vineyard? To most this is just a romantic idea for “someday,” an idea like many others relegated to “Someday Isle.”

Well, if this is your dream, you now have a real chance to make that dream a reality. Canelo Hills Vineyard & Winery is a turn-key vineyard, winery and tasting room in the midst of the Elgin Road wineries in Sonoita, AZ and it was just put on the market for sale. The property is a ten-acre parcel planted in 2004 with 6.5 cultivated acres of vines including Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Malvasia, Zinfandel and Sangiovese. It has

a 3000 sf winery and tasting room and has been in operation since 2007. You can save yourself the time and expense of starting from scratch (and the learning curve) and hit the ground running with a cash flow generating business. The asking price of $499,000 includes all real estate, the vineyard and winery equipment. Wine inventory will be calculated at the time of closing and transferred at cost.

Current owners Tim and Joan Mueller have created this vineyard and winery from scratch and fulfilled their dream. Their wines are outstanding and award winning. Now they are ready to pass the torch to the right person who will carry on their legacy and fulfill their own dreams of living in wine country.

Tim would like to stay involved as a consultant if the new owners wish.

Many will dream, few will take action and make those

dreams a reality. Learn more at www.Canelohillswinery.com and see the full sales brochure here: www.arizonalandbaron.com/resources/CaneloHillsSalesBrochure.pdf

showcase one of America’s favorite instruments and feature a concert performance by a true guitar virtuoso. Presented by Dick Boak, Martin’s museum director and archivist, Juber will discuss his work composing, recording, and performing as the lead guitarist with Paul McCartney in his band Wings and Juber’s own successful solo career. The show begins at 7pm on Thursday, August 9th at the MIM Music Theater (4725 E. Mayo Blvd. in Phoenix). Tickets range from $22.50 to $27.50 and can be purchased by calling 480.478.6000, visiting online at www.theMIM.org or visiting the MIM Ticket Office.

Bringing back their signature mash-up of eclectic grooves, Slightly Stoopid is set to release Top Of The World on Tuesday August 14th. The seven-piece band continues to explore a variety of styles on the new record, with help from some of their biggest influences and heroes. Reggae legends Barrington Levy and Don Carlos of Black Uhuru are present on the tracks “Ur Love” and “Marijuana,” respectively. Longtime band friend and touring partner G. Love appears on “G Man Blues,” and Fishbone frontman Angelo Moore appears on “Ska Diddy.” Ex-Jurassic Five emcee extraordinaire Chali 2na drops his signature verses on “Just Thinking,” while Dumpstaphunk’s Ian Neville and “unofficial 8 member” Karl Denson of Greyboy Allstars also lend their talents throughout the album. Check out www.slightlystoopid.com for more information.

Iconic Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators announced a full-fledged fall tour with a stop at the intimate Celebrity Theatre on Wednesday, September 5th with special guests Foxy Shazam. Slash first took the stage at Celebrity Theatre in 1988 during a Guns ‘N Roses tour and returned to a sold out house in 2004 with Velvet Revolver.

The tour is in support of Slash’s second solo studio album Apocalyptic Love, which stormed onto the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart at #4, marking the top rock debut that week. Slash achieved his first-ever #1 hit on rock radio as the explosive

first single “You’re A Lie” vaulted to the #1 spot at Active Rock. The album also entered the Top 5 in seven countries outside the U.S.: Canada (#2), Australia (#2), New Zealand (#1), Germany (#5), France (#7), Japan (#2), Sweden (#4) and Switzerland (#3). All the songs on Apocalyptic Love were written together by Slash and Myles Kennedy. The Los Angeles Times said, “Fans of his work in GNR and Velvet Revolver will find much to embrace in the album’s 13 tracks, ranging from the sneering rock hooks of ‘You’re a Lie’ and the heavy metal grind of ‘Halo’ to the extended instrumental passages on ‘Anastasia’”.

For the tour, Slash teamed up with Guitar Center to offer a one-of-a-kind opportunity to 20 unsigned American bands. Slash will hand select 20 bands to be his opening acts on the fall tour in the cities closest to their hometown. Not only will the bands

be opening for one of the world’s greatest guitarists, but they will also receive a tour support prize pack that includes gear from Ernie Ball, Zoom and more. The grand prizewinner, to be named by Slash, will take home $10,000 in guitars from Gibson and Epiphone, plus a $5,000 shopping spree at Guitar Center. The 20 bands will be announced in this month. Slash was honored with his own star on the Hollywood Blvd Walk of Fame on July 10th.

Hailing from Cincinnati Ohio, Foxy Shazam was on Spin’s list of 10 bands you need to know in 2010. Vocalist Eric Nally helped write songs for Meat Loaf’s album Hang Cool Teddy Bear.

Doors open at 5 p.m. and Show begins at 7 p.m. General Admission tickets are $45; on sale now at Celebrity Theatre or online at www.celebritytheatre.com. To charge by phone, call 602-267-1600 ext.1. All

tickets are subject to a surcharge. Additional ticket and tour information is available at http://slashonline.com/tour. Celebrity Theatre is conveniently located just 4 blocks south of the 202 freeway, at 440 N. 32nd St., in Phoenix.

THE THREE TIER SYSTEMOne of the most misunderstood things in the beer industry is the three tier system. The system dates back to the repeal of Prohibition in 1933. For those of you who weren’t around in 1933, let us take a quick refresher course. In 1919 as a result of a vocal movement by a relatively small minority, heavily based on a female population who had just won the right to vote and were exercising their new found freedom, congress passed and the states ratified the 18th Amendment. This amendment prohibited production and sale of alcoholic beverages in the United States. Thirteen years later the 21st Amendment was ratified which repealed the 18th Amendment. The result of Prohibition, or the Noble

Experiment as it was sometimes called, was exactly the opposite of what was hoped for. Crime ran rampant; more people than ever were drinking as a result of illegal bootlegging operations, many of them controlled by organized crime…The Mob if you will. Poverty increased and by the end of the 1920’s we had seen the stock market crash and the beginning of the Great Depression. During the period of Prohibition it is estimated that the United States lost $11,000,000,000 in tax revenue from the sale of alcohol and spent another $500,000,000 in enforcement of Prohibition…and back in that time a billion dollars was real money.

In 1932, Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected president, partly because the impoverished American public would no longer accept Herbert Hoover as their president and Roosevelt promised a “New Deal”. He also promised to end Prohibition. He did that swiftly; within months of his inauguration beer was once again flowing as a result of the Cullen-Harrison Act and on December 5th 1933, Utah voted to ratify the 21st Amendment ending Prohibition. Thus, with 75% of the states having voted to ratify, Prohibition was over. As with anything political, the opposition had to be given some concessions in order to move this vote along, and such was the case with the 21st. One of the things put in place was the Three Tier System for

distribution of alcoholic beverages. The system was designed for several purposes. One was to allow states the ability to control their liquor

laws, including who could sell and distribute, and to collect taxes due. Another purpose was to prevent “tied houses” where a retail establishment is either owned or controlled by a supplier thereby eliminating competition in that establishment and effectively killing off any opportunity small brands have to get a foothold in a bar or restaurant.

The three tiers are simple. There is the producer, or supplier…the brewery, winery, distillery, meadery or other entity that controls the production of the beverage. Importers also fall into this category since they are the business in the United States that first handles the product. The second tier is the distribution or wholesale tier which purchases the product from the supplier and in turn distributes it to the third tier, the retailer. A retailer is a state licensed (or state owned in some states) business that is permitted to sell alcoholic beverages directly to the end consumer, also known as you folks out there reading this.

The supplier and the retailer tier are pretty simple to understand, so there is not much need to spend time

Non them. It is the middle tier, the wholesaler, which creates confusion and sometimes controversy. It becomes apparent that many of the arguments against the three tier system in general are specious. Most are specific as regards certain state laws or enforcement. Many of them actually have nothing to do with the three tier system but it all gets tied in with that.

Briefly, here is what a distributor does – for simplicity sake, I am using a beer distributor since we are in the beer section. A distributor contracts with a supplier to buy beer in bulk for distribution in a specific geographic territory. As part of that agreement the distributor will ship the beer (sometimes the supplier handles that), warehouse the beer, sell the beer, deliver the beer, maintain the beer (stock rotation, install draft handles, even clean tap lines as permitted by law), execute marketing programs and special events, pay state taxes on the beer, serve as a local point of contact for the supplier, ensure quality standards are met and

much more.

So, how do they do all this? They purchase or lease a warehouse, buy or lease trucks, hire salespeople, warehouse people, administrative people, drivers, merchandisers, accountants, HR, invest in an infrastructure that allows them to do everything they have to do as effectively as possible. Different size distributors make different size investments, but they all need the same basic tools to do the job. The investment is large and the ones that do it right spend what they have to in order to bring the best possible beers to your favorite restaurant, bar or liquor store.

There are arguments against the middle tier; most common are increased costs and decreased variety. Neither of these arguments makes sense. Let’s address the cost issue first, and, as you will see, that naturally dovetails with the variety issue. Of course distributors tack on an added cost over the prices they pay from the brewery, but is it more

expensive with a distributor? In Arizona, we get Bell’s beer despite being about 1900 miles away from the brewery. In Philadelphia they get Russian River despite the 2900 miles between the locations. It goes on and on. Let’s assume Bell’s had to sell and deliver all the beer they sold in Arizona. Now they need a fleet of trucks, they need salespeople, they need people to monitor the stores the beer is sold in to ensure quality, and they need a substantial increase in their current expenses to cover the added costs of selling to the retailers across the country. And, unless they intend to ship everything directly to the retailer, they need warehouses located throughout the country to store product in, all at a great expense. What about the direct ship option. To ship a full keg of beer from Michigan to Arizona would cost almost $140 and take seven days; to ship a case of beer would cost about $38. In other words, shipping alone would add approximately $1.15 to every pint of beer from the keg, or $9.50 to every six-pack. Clearly direct shipping to the retailer would

not work, so we are back to building an infrastructure at substantial cost increase.

The net effect is that it will cost far too much for breweries to operate in all states so the logical assumption is that they will limit their distribution as much as possible. A brewery like The Bruery is not going to ship beer to the East Coast if they have no way to monitor quality, so they will limit their area of distribution to the areas surrounding their location in Placentia, California. There are very few breweries that could afford to distribute to the territories they are now selling to if they had to provide all of the service that their local distributor does. The other thing that will discourage far reaching distribution is the inability of a remote shipping brewery to confirm local licensing and laws pertaining to alcohol which are outside of the three tier system. Things like taxes, licensing, marketing restrictions would all have to be handled locally. And if you think about how that

would impact craft beer, imagine trying to get a high end Belgian import without the three-tier system.

What are some of the other things that distributors do? They employ about 100,000 people nationally so they contribute to their local economy. They handle all of the legalities of distribution, including (most importantly to the states) the collection and payment of state and local taxes. The clear chain of custody that is maintained by a locally based distributor handling the product directly from the supplier to the retailer under a licensed and accountable system protects the consumer. There are numerous

instances of counterfeit spirits in other countries, some of which just impact the cost, others which have actually killed people. Just recently, Americans have fallen victim to fake bottles of Cantillon being sold on eBay.

So as you can see there are numerous advantages to the current three-tier system. Are there things that need to be fixed? Of course there are. Many of them are state specific issues and would require fine tuning at that level. On the whole, the three-tier system works. Beer gets where it needs to be, the proper taxes get paid, and, most importantly, quality standards are maintained. If there is another system that works better, I can’t think of it.

NATIONAL IPA DAY, A Day for Growlers! by King James Swann

Hello again fellow beer geeks, today let’s chat about National IPA Day. Taking place the first Thursday of August every year, IPA Day is a celebration of old English heritage and modern American craft beer. The big party here in the East Valley both this and last year was at Whole Foods in Chandler. 25 different IPAs of every sort and style including two true cask ales were on tap for your enjoyment during the gathering. To give you an idea on attendance, I lost count of the people coming in and out at about 8pm and my sum was well over three hundred. The crowd was in Top Gear as brewers and representatives from BJ’s, Four Peaks, Sonoran, Lagunitas, Dragoon Brewing, SanTan Brewing and SKA Brewing were all in the house answering questions, signing growlers and giving away swag!

Standout brews were the Apricot Cranberry Mojo IPA from Boulder Brewing, The Count Hopula BloodRed IPA from SanTan Brewing, 10th Anniversary Ruination IPA from Stone and most certainly the Casks of Sonoran Double Dry Hopped Victorian and BJ’s Double Dry Hopped Hop Storm.

Now, here is where things get truly awesome. This was also the day it became LEGAL to sell Growlers in the retail stores and bars here in AZ! Yes indeed, every beer on tap was available to take home. Beers never available for retail sales in bottles were here for the taking and people were taking full advantage! 25 award winning, rare and unique beers all flying out the door in half gallon and thirty two ounce glass containers and it was quite cool! One small step for craft beer, one giant step for thirsty mankind!

Until Next Week, Cheers!

“Finding time to relax is never really that far away”

One of my all-time favorite places that I used to bartend at actually is now The Beach Pit. The vibe is way more chill, with some reggae music and more selections for your beer. The new management is awesome; they treat you like one of their friends. The happy hour runs Monday through Friday from 3pm-7pm. They have dollar off basically everything you can drink. The best deal that I think that they have is 5 coronitas in a bucket for $6…and that’s all day every day. They have BBQ style food and people are already raving about it considering that it just opened last week. They have added TV’s now all around the restaurant, which helps liven up and modernize it a bit. I met Matt, Megan and Dennis and they offer great service! You will not be disappointed! This spot is new and improved and ready for a strong come back!! 414 South Mill Ave. #118 Tempe, AZ 85281

SUPER DUPER BRAVE…. Or Super Duper Dumb?

You be the Judge!

Moving forward with RUSH, a closer look at ten of the most dangerous stunts ever successfully performed in the history of man-kind by the

bravest and most daring of men. Or perhaps, individuals missing a chromosome or two, with too much time on their hands. We’ll leave that up to you. One must ask themselves however, if the tables were turned, would you have the “marbles” to set out to conquer

any one of these death-defying, hair-standing, jaw-dropping feats? #5 Philippe Petit – High-wire WalkerOutrageous scenes were witnessed in New York on August 7, 1974. French high-wire artist Petit was in the city to walk the high-wire that had been situated between the Twin Towers of the World Trade

Center. The year before he had walked a wire that had been set up between the pylons of the Sydney Harbour Bridge in Australia, but this feat in New York was his masterpiece, or as he liked to refer to it as “le coup”. A film has been made about this stunt, Man on Wire, which won both the World Cinema Jury and Audience awards at the Sundance Film Festival 2008.
