2.0 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
The Sky Connect Voice and Data Communication System consists of an Iridium antenna,GPS antenna, a transceiver, corded handset, cordless handset, and audio/data interfacebased on options desired. The transceiver is the heart of the system, which contains thecircuitry for the Iridium Satellite communications system. This unit controls all 2-waycommunication of voice and data. The system is limited to one call at a time, whether it isvoice, data, or short burst data. These systems can exist simultaneously, but cannot beused simultaneously. Data or voice transmission is sent at a rate up to 10kbps (withcompression). An optional Network Gateway is offered for installation with the SkyConnect Transceiver to off the ability to send and receive email in the cabin during flight.
2.1 Transceiver
The transceiver has contained within the L-Band Transceiver (LBT) that communicateswith the satellites. The LBT is connected to an interface that is computer controlled andallows the LBT to be used for tracking and voice communications.
2.2 Antennas
There are two possible antennas used. One is the Iridium antenna which connects to theLBT, and does the sending and receiving of the satellite signals. The other is the optionalGPS antenna used if the transceiver has an internal GPS sensor. This GPS sensor is notconnected in any way to the cockpit and can not be used as a reference for navigation. Itspurpose is only to report the position of the aircraft to the ground map.
2.3 Wiring
Wiring will vary with options selected at the time of installation. The Sky Connect Forte’Installation Manual shows a wide array of options and how they are to be wired.
2.4 Handsets/Cradles/Base Station
The handsets are installed at the option of the customer’s preference. There are basicallytwo designs, a cordless and corded. With the cordless comes the cordless base station. Both options are designed to be used with the POTS interface offered by the transceiver. This is a two wire ring and tip, the same as found commercially all over the world. Up tofour POTS devices may be installed in parallel on the same POTS line. This offers acombination of multiple units of the two designs.
ICA-2009-100Date: 10/7/2009
Rev. A
4
There are two cradle designs for the cordless handsets. Surface mount as it describes willmount to the surface of a wall or drink rail. Flush mount as it describes is to be mountedflush into a surface. Both have a power supply to recharge the batteries in the handsetwhen power is applied to the aircraft.
Cordless handsets have a great deal of range and can be used anywhere in the cabin, andeven outside the aircraft while on the ground (of course). When the aircraft is to bestored for long periods of time, the handsets should be removed from the aircraft andstored in a dry cool place to preserve the operation of batteries and displays. An officecharger could be used to keep the unit batteries charged.
The corded handset draws power from the aircraft buss and does not have batteries.
2.5 Network Gateway
The Gateway part number 1616-101-31 may be installed as an option to allow passengersto send and receive email while in flight. The gateway interfaces with the transceiverover a dedicated RS-232 serial port to allow the gateway access to the Iridium network.
The Iridium satellite constellation is the pipeline used to send the email data to the earthstation. This pipeline currently has a narrow band width (4800 bps) but is more thansufficient for the use of email as long as the automatic downloading of graphics is turnedoff on the device connected by WIFI to the gateway. Connection is automatic once awireless device is turned on within range of the gateway. Your handheld device shouldsee a service titled “AIRMAIL SERVER” as a WIFI connection point. Selecting thisservice will allow connection of email services.
NOTE: Sky Connect strongly suggest a dedicated transceiver be used wheninstalling the Network Gateway. If not other services such as phone andtracking will be interrupted.

4.5 Checkout Procedures
4.5.1 Telephony Units (1616-4X0-0XA)
4.5.1.1 Phone testing
Using ground power, turn on the Aircraft master, avionics master, or what ever is required to fully power all elements of the installed Sky Connect system. The Iridium antenna must have an unimpeded view of the sky. Operating next to a hangar can cause occasional brief signal interruption. Allow at least one minute for the system to register on the Iridium network. This system is a phone, so operation is as with any phone. The Iridium System is an international phone system so when dialing this phone alwaysuse the international country code number of the phone you are dialing to.
4.5.1.2 MMU II (if installed)
Dial Test: Select the Sky Connect system on the audio panel. Rotate the selector knob andselect one of the preprogrammed phone numbers on the MMU and push the knob toinitiate the call, or dial a number from the keypad. A ring should be audible in theheadset. When answered, verify that the connection is clear and free of interference. Pressthe selector knob again to terminate the call.
Receive Call Test: Request the dispatch center to place a call to the Sky Connect Trackersystem installed on the aircraft. Verify that the ring is heard. Answer the call by pressingthe selection knob. Verify that the connection is clear and free of interference. Press theselector knob again to terminate the call.
Send Data Test: Select one of the preprogrammed test messages on the MMU II and pushthe knob to send data. Verify that the data has been received by dispatch. Note: thisprocess may take up to 120 seconds depending on server workload.
Request the dispatch center to send a text message to the Sky Connect Tracker via the webinterface. Verify that the message has displayed on the face of the MMU II. Note: thisprocess may take up to 120 seconds depending on server workload.

4.5.1.3 Information on dialing
A call to the aircraft from the ground can be done in one of two ways;
1.) Call the aircraft number using the international code of 011-88-163-xxx-xxxx where the xs are the given number.
2.) Call the Iridium phone number 480-768-2500, and then dial the 88-163-xxx-xxxxnumber. This option may not be available to all customers. Use of this optiondepends on activation of this feature at time of purchase.
The second example is cheaper for customers calling within the US, because it offers Iridium users a special rate per minute.
4.5.2 Tracking
4.5.2.1 Tracking (if installed)
In order to fully test Tracker, you will need access to a PC running Sky ConnectTracker-Map, or an approved GIS display system. In the event that this is not available toyou, contact Sky Connect Technical Support where we can remotely aid in your testing. Refer to Appendix A for additional troubleshooting advice.
The Installer can verify the proper wiring of every onboard component with a combinationof the Tracker Setup program and the status annunciator light (if installed). The installercan be assured that their portion of the job is acceptable if the onboard unit consistentlyindicates that it is sending and completing messages. (This is indicated by positiveconfirmation that the message was sent on the MMU II). It is the customer’s responsibilityto choose the manner in which they display their “tracked” aircraft, not the installers.
Note: Only one Iridium source can occupy the network at one time. Ifa Sky Connect voice option is installed and in use, the Tracker willstore and send position reports when the line is free. Configurationswill exist to give Tracker priority, thus discontinuing an in-progresscall. Alternatively, separate transceivers/antenna can be used formultiple systems.
Using ground power, turn on the Aircraft master, avionics master, or what ever is requiredto fully power all elements of the installed Sky Connect components. If a G.P.S. isinterfaced, it must be operating and have acquired satellites. The aircraft must have anunimpeded view of the sky. Operating next to a hangar can cause occasional brief signal

15
interruption of both G.P.S. and Iridium functionality. If using an internal G.P.S., allow theunit to run for up to 15 minutes on the initial startup to allow the internal G.P.S. to acquirealmanac data. Allow two minutes for the system to register on the iridium network.
Within this registration time, Tracker will generate a start up message which will be sentvia the Iridium network to our switching network, and then to the mapping system. At thistime, (approximately 24 seconds after the message was generated) a data block will beavailable to your Tracking Provider. With some software systems there may be a delay upto 1 ½ minutes before the aircraft is seen on your GIS. Giving the G.P.S. a destinationwaypoint, and if possible some speed, will send additional parameters to the mappingsystem for display, including Destination, Speed, Altitude, Flight Plan, etc.
IMPORTANT - Using the TRACKER SETUP program, you can testmost of the features of the installation with the exception of the fullnetwork test. Any contact closures that were installed for use withTracker can be tested at this time as well. No messages will becompiled or sent while the Tracker Setup program is connected andrunning. Messages will resume, roughly one minute after the programis discontinued.
From the main page, you can verify the G.P.S. position, speed, and altitude. The unitsIMEI # and G.P.S. input type are displayed when known. The Iridium Signal strength(0-5) and Modem status are displayed and updated in real time.
From the Switch configuration page you can select the type and rate of each switch input, but you can also test to verify the input. The Setup program samples the incomingswitches every ten seconds to see if they are active. The switch status will display as on ifa ground is applied to the corresponding pin, and off if the line is floating.
Each closure will also generate a specific event at the PC running the mapping systemsoftware. The program must have an “assignment” for the event triggers to accomplishtheir task. The assignment for contact closure #2, for example, can be assigned on themapping system PC terminal to annunciate “Mission Aborted.” The important elementhere is that the contact closure number is accurate to the specific switch being tested. Purposes for these switches are defined by the end user. For more clarity on thisprogramming, refer to the mapping system operation manual.
Should you desire to use our Tech Support for these tests, you will need to have availablethe Transceiver Serial Number, IMEI#, aircraft ID, and installed options/configuration.With power applied, Tracker will continue to generate position report updates at its

16
programmed interval. Once registered on the network, Tracker interval reports are billedper hour of use including during the testing process.
Note: Programmed interval directly affects customer billing. Consultwith end user regarding all available configuration options beforeaccomplishing.
4.5.3 Network Gateway (if installed)
4.5.3.1 Verify the Data LED is solid Green indicating a successful boot. If not solidGreen, refer to the Network Gateway Installation Manual for troubleshootingprocedures.
