HOW TO PREPARE FOR A WINTER STORM EMERGENCY
• Get an emergency supply kit thatincludes enough provisions for you andyour family to live on for a minimum ofthree days.• Check and update your family'semergency supply kit before winterapproaches and add the followingsupplies in preparation for winterweather:• Rock salt to melt ice on walkways.• Sand to improve traction.• Snow shovels and other snow removalequipment.• Adequate clothing and blankets to keepyou and your family warm.• Make an emergency plan for you andyour family.• Listen to your radio, television, or NOAA
Weather Radio for weather reports andemergency information.• Make sure your home is well insulatedand that you have weather strippingaround your doors and windowsills tokeep the warm air inside.• If you have no heat, close off unneededrooms, stuff towels or rags in the cracksunder doors and cover windows at night.• Cover pipes with insulation ornewspapers and plastic. Allow faucets todrip a little during cold weather to avoidfreezing.• Learn how to shut off water valves incase a pipe bursts. If the pipes freeze, remove any insulation or layers ofnewspapers and wrap pipes in rags.• Completely open all faucets and pour
hot water over the pipes, starting wherethey were most exposed to the cold (orwhere the cold was most likely topenetrate).• Use extreme caution when usingalternative heating sources. Refuelkerosene heaters outside and keep themat least three feet from flammableobjects. Also, when using keroseneheaters be sure to maintain ventilation toavoid build-up of toxic fumes. SeeWinter Heating Safety Tips for moreinformation.• Wear layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing. Several layers oflightweight clothing will keep youwarmer than a single heavy coat. Weargloves (or mittens) and a hat to helpprevent loss of body heat.
• Avoid driving during winter storms. Ifyou must drive:
• Stay on main roads, avoiding back roadshortcuts.
• Try to only travel during the day.• Plan ahead for winter traveling. Be sureto let someone know where you aregoing, along with your primary andalternate routes.
• Prepare your vehicle for winter bychecking (or having a mechanic check):
• Antifreeze levels• Battery and ignition system• Brakes (wear and fluid level)• Exhaust system (leaks, crimped pipes, etc.)
• Fuel and air filters• Heater and defroster
• Lights and flashing hazard lights• Oil• Thermostat• Tires (tread and air levels)• Windshield wipers and wiper fluid• If you get trapped in your car during ablizzard:
• Pull off the highway. Turn on hazardlights and hang a distress flag from theradio antenna or window.
• Remain in your vehicle where rescuersare most likely to find you. Do not setout on foot during a blizzard unless youcan see a building close by where youknow you can take shelter. If you doleave the vehicle, use extra cautionbecause distances are distorted byblowing snow.
• Run the engine and heater about 10minutes each hour to keep warm. Whenthe engine is running, open a downwindwindow slightly for ventilation andperiodically clear snow from the exhaustpipe to guard against possible carbonmonoxide poisoning.
• Huddle with other passengers and useyour coat for a blanket.
• Take turns sleeping. One person shouldbe awake at all times to look for rescuecrews.
• Drink fluids to avoid dehydration.• If stranded in a remote area, stomp largeblock letters in an open area spelling outHELP or SOS and line with rocks or treelimbs to attract the attention of rescuepersonnel who may be surveying thearea by airplane.
• Use caution not to over exert yourselfwhen shoveling snow. Heart attackscaused by overexertion are a major causeof death in the winter.
• Cover your mouth to protect your lungsfrom extremely cold air.
• Keep dry. If possible, change wetclothing frequently to prevent a loss ofbody heat.
• Watch for signs of frostbite. Theseinclude loss of feeling and white or pale
appearance in extremities such asfingers, toes, ear lobes, and the tip of thenose. If symptoms are detected, getmedical help immediately.
• Watch for signs of hypothermia. Theseinclude uncontrollable shivering, memory loss, disorientation, incoherence, slurred speech, drowsiness, and apparent exhaustion. If symptomsof hypothermia are detected:
• Get the victim to a warm location.
• Remove wet clothing.• Put the person in dry clothing and wraptheir entire body in a blanket.
• Warm the center of the body first.• Give warm, non-alcoholic ornon-caffeinated beverages if the victimis conscious.
• Get medical help as soon as possible.

Skippack Fall Fest! At the Skippack Farm Museum (Allebach & Cholet Farm)4109 Creamery Road. October 22nd, 2016 10am-3pm
Through the cooperation efforts of the Skippack Park Board and the Skippack Historical Society, we presentthe fifth annual Skippack Fall Fest! Bring the children and climb aboard the hayride wagon pulled by avintage tractor. Visit the pumpkin patch and help yourself to a free pumpkin to take home! View the rowsof antique tractors and horse drawn implements to learn about the farming of yesteryear. One can also tourthe old barn that recently had considerable work done by an Amish crew, and see how it was built and viewthe various farm tools inside. Visit the SHS table to learn about the farm's history and other local historicalplaces. For those that like animals, come enjoy the collection of exotic animals put on display by Alison Ueland, including the giant snake! Satisfy your appetite by lunching from Blair Thompson's food truck, owner ofSwirls&Nibbles. Free face painting will also be provided to the children. This year's Fall Fest marks a specialtransition where the property formally becomes the Skippack Farm Museum. Operated by Benjamin H.Webb, the barn houses the farm machinery of days gone by. In the name of preservation, old plows, cultivators, wagons, shellers, choppers, oxen yokes, and other farm tools are sheltered and saved for future generations tolearn from. All of these antiques are housed in the circa 1820 bank barn, and labeled with known informationlike their purpose, where they once worked, and who used them. Please come out for a free pumpkin andhayride, sit at the wheel of an antique tractor, and learn about Skippack's rural days gone by.

Road Crew
Road Crew does not begin to cover all the jobs these employees do for this township. They do so much more than just maintainingthe roads. They maintain and repair the township’s vehicles and equipment as well as the maintaining the township building andparks. They clean out storm water pipes and install them as well. Your road crew keeps the roadways safe in the winter by clearing snowand ice.
