dermalogica from the beginning

The Moment Your Skin Changed. Forever. While the Dermalogica story begins in 1986, the force of change in the skin care industry started in 1983. Jane Wurwand, a tenured, United Kingdom-trained skin therapist new to the American “esthetician” industry, quickly recognized continuing skin and body therapy education was lumped together with cosmetic services as part of the beauty industry; whereas in the UK, skin care was treated more seriously.

In response to all of this, she founded The International Dermal Institute in the Los Angeles area in 1983, “…because no one told me I couldn’t. Only in America, only in Southern California would this have been possible,” she says. Today, IDI is considered the international gold-standard for postgraduate skin and body therapy training with over 40 locations worldwide, and researches and develops all Dermalogica classes.

The Making of Dermalogica While teaching at IDI, it didn’t take long for Jane to realize no product line embraced her belief of skin health as opposed to “beauty,” so she developed her own. And in 1986, Dermalogica was born. The vision was clear – a product line free of common irritants and ingredients that could cause breakouts (including lanolin, SD alcohol, mineral oil, artificial colours and fragrances) that would improve skin health, and were only available from qualified skin therapy professionals trained at The International Dermal Institute.

As a brand, Dermalogica immediately upset the prevailing paradigm of beauty and glamour by classifying skin care as a health issue as opposed to a cosmetic concern. Just as we removed common irritants from the ingredient menu, Dermalogica also introduced a powerful new element into the brand identity: the specialized expertise of the professional skin therapist.

Then, as now, all our products are manufactured in the USA, we have never taken part in animal testing, and Dermalogica is sold only where professional consultation and professional treatments are performed by professional skin therapists. Born and raised in California, Dermalogica is a privately owned company (meaning we are not owned by a beauty conglomerate, holding company or financiers) driven first by education and research and never wavering on our initial vision of skin health and the skin health professional.

How to use:

This soap-free botanical blend of Quillaja Saponaria and calming Lavender foams away impurities without leaving the skin feeling tight or dry, All skin conditions.

How to Use: Foam a size of a dime with water in the hands, massage over face and throat. Rinse with tepid water and repeat.

dermal clay cleanser

Super-absorbent Kaolin and Green Clays wipe away excess oil and impurities to deep-cleanse the skin and refine its texture. Cooling Menthol and Camphor leave the skin feels refreshed. Oily/congested skin conditions.

How to Use :Apply the size of a quarter to a damp skin and massage over face and throat. Rinse with tepid water and repeat.

daily microfoliant

This unique, rice-based enzyme powder microfoliates dulling debris and instantly leaves the skin noticeably smoother and brighter. Unique skin brightening complex to balance uneven skin pigmentation, while the active agents derived from Rice Bran help to regulate melanin production and microfoliate dead cells.

How to Use: Use a small cup to mix ½ tsp. of powder with warm water . Using a fan masque brush mix to a foam consistency. Apply to the skin and massage for 1 - 2 minutes. Rinse thoroughly.

How to Use: Dispense 2 pumps into the palm of hand and apply to skin using massage movements. Remove with a warm steam towel or sponges.

massage cream A rich massage cream with a base of Safflower Oil to give perfect slip and glide for massage. Use on damp skin. Water soluble for easy removal. Dry/dehydrated skin

How to Use: Apply size of a walnut to face and upper body, wet hands and continue with massage. Remove with warm water and sponges.

masques

colloidal masque base A clear, botanically-active gel rich in phytonutrients that deeply moisturizes dehydrated skin conditions. Botanical humectants attract moisture and bind it to the skin, leaving it hydrated and supple. Dehydrated skin and around the eyes & lips.

How to use: Apply size of a quarter over complex in areas of dehydration. Allow to activate for 10 minute. Rinse with a warm steam towel.

contour masque A loose white powder, rich in Calcium Sulfate and algae-derived Silica. Once mixed with water, it forms a smooth paste, which then sets and dries into a firm, rubbery sheet. Sensitized, mature, prematurely-aged skin in need of firming.

How to use: 1. Prepare the skin with the desired complex protect the eyes and face with gauze. (Tuck kleenex iinto the head band and also at the sides of the clients neck to protect linens.) 2. Mix 1/3 of the bag with ’cool’ water using a wooden spatula in a to a stretchy paste (it should look like a stiff icing sugar.) 3. Pour on to the skin applying over the eyes using a wooden spatula to move into position. 4. Allow to set for 15-20 minutes and peel off and discard. Rinse off any residue with sponges or a cool towel.
