LF Foundation has recently launched

three DLF LabourNet Training Centres - Done each in Bulandshahar, Indore &

'Skill a Million' Programme

Taking cognizance of the glaring

gap that exists between the demand

and supply of ski l led labour,

DLF Foundation 'Skill a million'

programme aims to set up 250 centres

across India and skilling a million

people in the next 5 years.

Provides technical education at a very

nominal and affordable cost

appropriate remuneration is the key

to this programme.

Beauty & Hair Care, Electrical and Sales while the

third centre in Indore offers courses in Hair and

Beauty Care, Marketing, Electrical and Computer

Training.

The centres impart industry relevant vocational

skills training through unique models evenly

spread across the curriculum and includes on-site

earn and learn platforms. The training modules

are simple to understand and are taught to

enable students acquire industry appropriate

skills and get employment.

The training methodology integrates 'best-in-

class' training practices and industry relevant

curriculum through the Occupational Standards

study process. This approach aims at creating

incremental employability on a 'year-on-year'

basis based on an industry relevant assessment

and certification process.

The beneficiaries are the unemployed youth who

are taught not only the technical skills but also the

life skills necessary for employment. This is an

employment assured training programme where

all trainees are provided with placement linkages

to give them an opportunity to improve their lives

and build their careers.

The backdrop...

In rapidly growing economies like India with a vast

and ever-increasing population, the problem is

two-fold. On one hand, there is a severe paucity of

highly-trained, quality labour, while on the other,

large sections of the population possess little or

no job skills.

In the recently announced Union Budget 2013-14

and the Economic survey, the Government has

allocated INR 1,000 crore for the skill

development for the youth. As a part of the

agenda, the National Skill Development

Corporation has decided to train 5 crore people in

the current plan. The government has also set a

target to skill approximately 500 million people in

the next 10 years. Assisting the government and

NSDC in their noble initiative, DLF Foundation in

collaboration with several partners, is setting up

DLF LIFE Skill Centres across the country.

Visually-impaired DLF Scholar Moves to Stanford University

artik Sawhney, a young lad from a low income

family, has been a star performer in academics. KHe scored the coveted 99% marks in computer

science and 95% each in English, Mathematics, Physics &

Chemistry, becoming India's first visually impaired

student to achieve this feat in science stream. It was not

easy for Kartik to study with normal students at Delhi

Public School, RK Puram but he was determined to make

a mark for himself and his determination and

perseverance paid off.

Kartik always dreamt to be an

engineer but he was denied

permission to appear in IIT-

JEE Entrance exam for three

years because he is visually

impaired. Though Kartik was

disappointed but he did not

lose hope. He believed that

success comes to those who

believe in their strengths.

Under their DLF CARES –

Talent Nurturing Programme,

DLF Foundation awarded him

a scholarship. Subsequently, he approached Stanford

University in the US and got his merit scholarship too.

Securing both the scholarships, he was able to raise the

resources required to fund his studies and joined the

college to pursue a five-year course in engineering in

computer science.

Passionate about computers, Kartik enjoys learning

computer languages and designing applications. He has

designed a software called 'STEM Made Easy', which has

two different applications and aims to help blind

students study subjects like Maths and Science. He hopes

to sharpen his computing skills at Stanford University and

develop better software for people like him.

He loves music and has been professionally trained in

Indian classical music for a decade. When he was in Class

IX, he was one of 10 talented students selected from

across India, to receive training from the late Pandit Ravi

Shankar.

DLF Cares - Talent Nurturing Programme

Launched in 2011 for the upliftment of

the meritorious underprivileged students.

Core motives include awarding scholarships,

talent identification and nurturing.

The programme covers school children from

class 1 to undergraduate and subsequently

post graduate courses.

professional category so far. This financial year (2013 –

2014), 90 more scholarships will be awarded to the

deserving students. The scholarship programme covers

secured scholarship under 'DLF Cares' Talent Nurturing

program during 2013-2014.

School Scholars

volunteers and mentors who joined the DLF Cares-Talent

Nurturing Programme that was launched early this year.

Over 42 volunteers and mentors have so far joined the

programme and they work with “DLF Cares” Scholars to

transform them to become a new generation of leaders.

DLF Sahyog Volunteering Programme is an initiative of

DLF Foundation, where in, not only the DLF employees,

but even their immediate family members come forward

to volunteer their time and skills to guide 2-3 scholars

GURGAON RENEWAL MISSION

half-day workshop was recently organized to

discuss crucial issues and solutions with respect Ato adopting an Integrated Waste Management

Strategy for Gurgaon. The event was supported by

Gurgaon Renewal Mission, a reputed forum of several

non-government organizations, civil society groups and

residents' welfare associations working together

towards a visible result oriented movement that is aimed

at renewing Gurgaon as the 'dream city' of India. The

event was organised in partnership with Gurgaon First,

an NGO.

Waste management – a plaguing issue…

Gurgaon is a city with tremendous advantages and

unfortunately, tremendous problems too and waste

management is one of them. Of all the waste streams,

waste from electrical and electronic equipment

containing new and complex hazardous substances

presents the fastest-growing challenge that needs to be

addressed proactively.

Issues discussed…

The workshop had four distinct sessions:

a) How serious is Gurgaon's waste management

problem?

b) Policy Perspectives & government initiatives

c) Solutions and Way Forward

d) Success Stories

Recommended Action Points and Solutions for

Waste Management

An integrated approach using processing, recycling,

composting and power generation is needed to make

this city close to a zero waste city status.

The Bandwari plant is running sub-optimally. Within

two years of operation, already 50 per cent land has

been occupied by garbage in the plant. More capacity

can be added to the plant.

Call to Revamp Gurgaon's Waste Management Strategy!

Building Lives, September 2013 7

Besides, a proposal for a facility near Kachra Chowk on

the Gurgaon-Faridabad Road has remained stuck for

the last 2-3 years. If the area earmarked falls under the

protected Aravalli Range, then an alternate site be

identified.

The most important concern currently is to reduce the

land requirement for disposal of waste by maximising

appropriate treatment of different waste streams, in

order to reduce volumes of waste requiring being

land-filled. Besides, reservation of land for processing

& disposal of waste in the Zonal Plans is suggested.

Corporates need to be encouraged to sell waste to only

proper segregators and recyclers and not to the

unorganized sector.

In order to mitigate adverse impact to the

environment, the immediate development of

incineration process is proposed. Alongside this, the

closure, capping and landscaping of existing dump-

sites would have to be undertaken.

Authorities should earmark funds for processing and

treatment of waste.

There should also be an institutional framework for

coordination amongst stakeholders.

Some initiatives have been taken in different states to

address the issue of C&D waste independently or in

tandem with the existing Municipal solid Waste

(Management and Handling) rules 2000.

Citizens should be made aware of source segregation

of waste. The city's RWAs can be encouraged to deploy

organic waste converter machines at the local level

that can convert waste into high value manure.

Capacity building at the level of the authorities is a

must along with removal of malpractices in the

contracting system also need urgent attention.

In conclusion, what is needed is a clear waste

management policy at the level of MCG, fast action

on planned projects, and a greater involvement of

public.
