A Difference in Ski Helmets There are 2 classes of Ski Helmets on the market. Unless you research them, most skiers don’t know the difference. A Class “A” has to protect the top and rear of the head and also the ears/side of the head. A Class “B” has to protect the top and rear of the head, but doesn’t have to cover the ears. Under the liner of the helmet is a warning label by the manufacture about the helmet, some have the class and some don’t. The label should include: maintenance, cleaning, and storage; suitable accessories; a warning if the shell is made of material that is known to be adversely affected by contact with cleaning fluids, paints, hydrocarbons, transfers or other ex-traneous additions; that the helmet shall be adjusted to fit the wearer; how the helmet should rest on the head to ensure intended pro-tection; that a helmet subjected to a violent impact shall be discarded.

Class “A” and Class “B” helmets are for alpine skiers, snowboarders and similar groups. Class “A” helmets offer comparatively more protection. A Class “B” helmet may offer greater ventilation and better hearing, but it protects a smaller area of the head and gives a lesser degree of protection from penetration.

Impact tests are used on the different classes of helmets. The helmet is impacted three times, each at a different site about 4 inches apart. The Class “A” must be able to with-stand from 29.53 inches which reaches 8.6 mph. The Class “B” must be able to with-stand an impact from 14.76 inches which reaches 6 mph. These tests are the certifica-tion standards ASTM 2040, CE-EN 1077.

Lastly, most helmets that are about 5 years old should be replaced, because of the falls, shipping in boot bags, luggage tossed around in transport, etc. Check the outer shell and the inner shell for cracks and damage. Below is a picture of a label inside a hel-met.

So, in a nutshell a Class “A” Ski Helmet gives you much better coverage in terms of the protected area of the head (including the sides and ears) and can withstand a fall from twice the height of that of a Class “B” Helmet without failing.

AMSTERDAM - BRUGES BY BIKE & BARGE ON BOARD THE MAGNIFIQUE

May 10 – 17, 2014 You will be traveling on board the premium barge MS Magnifique for 8 days & 7 nights. It is one of the most beautiful barges for boat and bike tours. On board we will have 7 breakfasts, 6 picnic lunches for bike tours & 7 three course dinners. The bicycles on board the boat are unisex hybrid touring bicycles, German brand VSF with normal mount, 7-gears, hand brake and/or pedal brake and pannier bag. The bicycle tour follows flat terrain routes that have occasional hills. The route is on dedicated bi-cycle paths about 50% of the time, follows roads shared with traffic about 30% of the time. The remaining 20% of the route follows quiet roads. The tour is rated easy and is cycling in mostly flat terrain. Printed instructions & daily maps will be provided. The tour leader will be cycling along with us providing daily briefings of the bike tours & some short city tours.

During the tour, you will be visiting some of the most beautiful cities of Holland and Flanders: Am-sterdam, Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges, where you still can feel the charm of the days long gone.

After embarking from Amsterdam, you will cross through a beautiful part of the Netherlands, be-fore you bike along the winding small river Vecht with its impressive mansions and country houses on its banks. You will visit a real Dutch cheese farm and the 19 Dutch windmills in Kinderdijk.

Passing through Dordrecht and the fortified town of Willemstad, the ship cruises through the “Delta” Province of Zeeland to Belgium. You will spend the night in Antwerp, the city of Rubens, whose paintings can be admired in the cathedral. You will cycle from Antwerp to Ghent along the beautiful tidal river Lower Schelde. We end our tour in Bruges, the “Pearl of Flanders” with its pic-

turesque medieval town centre. All this, including round trip air fare between D.C. & Amsterdam & all bus transfers for about $2,700pp. Airfare & currency exchange rate TBD.
