HOUSTON DAUGHTERS OF PENELOPE

News Blast Summer fun began as Delegates Har lene Cor lett, Gr etchen Holtsinger and Paulette Pastor , with PGG Bar bar aMaligas and PGP Mar y Ver ges headed to the Distr ict Convention in Shr evepor t, LA on J une 20th. Congr atulations to Sister Gr etchen Holtsinger , our new Lt. Gover nor /Mar shal and kudos to ConventionChair per son Mar y Katsafanas for r eceiving the well-deser ved pr aise by Gr and Vice Pr esident Connie Pillalis, whosaid it was a pr ivilegeto see Sister Mar y wor k with gr ace, finesse, and without the use of the gavel.

No sense unpacking our bags as PGG Barbara, Sisters Harlene and Paulette also served as Delegates to the SupremeConvention in San Francisco. The delegates are still trying to loose the added pounds gained by the koulourakiaprovided daily to delegates by the host Eos Chapter Sisters. (Maybe that is why the winner of the koulourakiacontest was from San Francisco). While Delta District #16 had a small representation, it was a strong contingencyincluding Past Grand Presidents; Becky Demeris and Mary Verges (Achaia), and Barbara Stavis Wolf (Nestor), and 4sisters from Terpsichore. A great bond developed between the sisters along with fond memories and greatfriendships. PGG Barbara chaired the Legislative Committee which had a multitude of new legislation to consider, some which lead to lengthy debates that resulted in the committee having to reconvene the next morning to completeits work. With PGG Barbara's guidance, the legislation presented to the delegates for vote on the convention floorwent smoothly and quickly. A little bit of our Hear ts wer e left in San Fr ancisco when we headed home. What a better way for Achaia to end the month of July than by awarding our $1,000 Daughters of Penelope AchaiaScholarship to Arianna Checkles* at the AHEPA 29 Educational Foundation Scholarship Dinner on July 30th. Arianna is a 4th year chemical engineering student at the University of Texas, at Austin. She is the granddaughterof Dr. Nick and Terri Checkles who are both active members of the AHEPA family.

HOUSTON AHEPA - Alexander the Great ChapterHouston AHEPA #29 Raises $8,200 for St. Nicholas Shrine in NYC

August 6, 2015 - a night to remember! The Brothers of AHEPA 29 gathered at the home of CHapterPresident, Doug Harr is and his bride Nancy Albritton, to raise over $8,200 for the St. Nicholas Shrine atGround Zero, NYC. The First Annual AHEPA 29 Whisk(e)y and Cigar Night was, by all measures, a tremendous success. Members and guests filled the Harris loft that offered a spectacular evening view of downtown Houston. Greg Doxakis-William Grant & Sons Distillers provided top shelf spirits for tasting, Mark Love-SeriousCigars supplied the smoothest cigars in Houston, and Ted Mousoudakis-Theo's Restaurant supplied tastyGreek hors d'oeuvres. We were honored to have local clergy bless and be an integral part of the evening: Father Stelios Sitaras, Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, Galveston,Father Luke Palumbis, St. Basil's GOC, and Father James Shadid of St. George's Antiochian OrthodoxChurch. AHEPANs and guests were treated to a delicious assortment of hors d'oeuvres, premium whiskies andcigars. Besides these extraordinary delicacies, the brotherhood and fellowship shared truly embraced thereason why we were together. Lifelong friendships were renewed and the younger men were introduced tothe real meaning of Christian brotherhood. Our focus was theSt . Nicholas Shr ine that was destroyed during the 9/11 attack. Chr is Pappas explained the process ofreclaiming the land and planning for this phenomenal new cathedral. Fr. Luke Palumbris eloquentlydescribed the impact this new Orthodox Christian Shrine will have on the million visitors each month. Onthat hot August night, the results were outstanding for this memorable event.

Thank you to all who purchased the many treasures that were donated to help in the rebuildingof this Orthodox Christian Shrine. Total raised for the evenint - $8,200!!!! As Br. AHEPA Chapter 311 San Antonio News

submitted by Costa Sgagias, Chapter President

Our Greek Independence Day Luncheon in March was another success. The Sunday Church School children did a wonderful job leading everyone in the National Anthems and the Goyans did a great job serving everyone. Can't forget to thank the Ahepans in the kitchen

Our AHEPA project in April to clean and paint the Church kitchen was very successful. We removed everything from the kitchen that was not nailed down, to include the pantry and the cabinets. We washed, in some cases power washed; ceiling, floor, walls, cabinets, etc. We then painted the kitchen, the pantry and cabinets. Total project took 3 days and 215 man-hours.
