Box 870 Salisbury, Maryland 2 1803-0870 RE: Donation of Land Adjacent to the Henry S. Parker Athletic Complex and FY 2016 P05 Funding Request for Salisbury Skatepark Dear Mr. Culver, Approximately one year ago representatives of Wicomico County approached the Mayor and City Council about the possibility of the City donating some city-owned land adjacent to the Henry S. Parker Athletic Complex to the County for the purpose of expanding that complex. The particulars of this request have been debated at some length, but the County continues to express an interest in acquiring this additional land. On June 3,2015 the City received a letter from the Wicomico Recreation & Parks Commission, advising us that the FY 2016 Program Open Space (POS) funding decisions had been made, and that the City’s request for POS funding for the Salisbury Skatepark project had once again been denied. This latest denial makes seven times that the County has rejected the City’s request for P05 funding for the Skatepark. There are a great many recreational facilities of all types throughout Wicomico County, but there is still not one skatepark. Given that the County initiated this project based upon specific requests from the public, and the fact that this facility will serve both City and County residents, I truly do not understand the why the City’s requests for POS funding support from the County have been repeatedly denied. If the County wishes the City to seriously consider donating the requested additional land for the expansion of the Henry S. Parker Athletic Complex, I believe it is incumbent upon the County to provide something to the City in return for this substantial gift. If the County approves the City’s request for $90,000 in FY 2016 POS funding for the Salisbury Skatepark, and that application is submitted to DNR and subsequently approved by the MD State Board of Public Works, then the City will revisit the County’s request for the land donation. 1 I ~ S?d. 4 td

  • The City has been laboring to create a free public skatepark in Salisbury for eight years now.We have a strong desire to partner with the County to bring this long-awaited facility toSalisbury, as it will clearly be utilized by both City and County residents. I believe this proposalto be beneficial to all the parties involved, and I look forward to receiving your response.

    Sincerely,

    James Ireton, Jr.Mayor
