A skatepark seemed like the most fitting tribute for Alix Rice.

On July 8, 2011, Alix Rice, 18 years old at the time, was killed by a drunk driver while she was skateboarding home. In her memory, the Alix Rice Peace Park Foundation was formed in

August 2012 to create a safe haven for skateboarders. The reg-istered 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization’s mission is to pre-serve the values of Alix Rice through her legacy by constructing and preserving a skatepark as a safe, centrally located meeting place to all residents. The Peace Park will promote and empower the youth as stewards of the creative force that adds diversity to our local community through skateboarding as a recreational activity.

Rice’s mother, Tammy Schueler, who also serves as the founda-tion’s treasurer, says her daughter dove into skateboarding when they were living in Depew.

“Her friend taught her the basics and she really fell in love with it. It became her main use of transportation,” Schueler says.

According to Steve Federico, director of construction for the Foundation and vice president at Calspan Development & Construction, there were several years of work with the Town of Amherst to get the project off the ground and approved, but once it got started, it received a lot of community support and donations.

“A lot of volunteers have donated materials, equipment and la-bor. Over 70 companies from the construction industry in West-ern New York have donated something to the project,” Federico recalls, adding that several of those companies are members of

the Construction Exchange of Buffalo and Western New York, Inc. “It’s a real testament to our close-knit construction community.”

Schueler says when she first heard about the potential park, she was excited.

“I was approached by people in the community. It never oc-curred to me to do such a thing,” Schueler says. “A lot of people, including myself, felt she didn’t get the justice she deserved, so I thought, ‘what a great way to honor her.’”

“It’s a California-style skatepark. It has two bowls and a skate-able peace sign feature, which is a little tribute to Alix,” Schueler says. “There are a couple of ramps, rails and stairs. It’s got a bit of everything.”

The 10,000-square-foot facility is a new build, with construc-tion beginning in August 2017 and ending in July 2018. The park’s official grand opening took place on Aug. 4, 2018 with over 400 people attending. Federico says, “We needed to build up in order to dig down to install the deep bowls that the community want-ed”, so a 12-inch thick retaining wall was needed. Several thou-sand tons of stone were donated for backfill to build the park up for the construction of the cast-in-place concrete. Grindline Skateparks Inc. (Seattle, Wash.) was the architect. Local firms Clark Patterson Lee (CPL) and Calspan Development & Con-struction, LLC donated engineering and construction manage-ment services respectively.

Also acting as a tribute to Rice is a memorial brick wall. Sup-porters can sponsor the bricks at different levels: $100 for a fam-ily brick, $500 for a silver corporate brick and $1,000 for a gold corporate brick.

Who says used can’t be new?

A brand-new CarMax, a used car sales company, is being built from the ground up in Amherst. Construction began in Febru-ary 2018 and is scheduled to be complete in November 2018, according to Jim Sullivan,

project manager for Picone Construction.

CarMax is a Fortune 500 company with 175-plus stores across the

United States. The company has sold more than six million cars to

date. CarMax already has stores in Rochester and Albany.

“The project is essentially an enormous parking lot with a, single-

story, sales and service building located in the middle of it all,” Sullivan

explains. “We have reduced the existing elevations across the site

where a hotel and visitor center used to be located, installed all the

underground services – including a 4,000-gallon underground fuel

storage container – and are currently setting up all the new light poles

for the parking area.”

So far, the foundations for the building have been placed and

the steel-frame, masonry and cold-formed metal framing for the

external walls have been constructed. The roof has been installed,

and the internal walls are being framed. The next steps in the con-struction process include installing the internal sprinkler, electrical, mechanical and plumbing works and the final service connections, the wall finishes, ceilings and floors, as well as the owner-provided equipment such as the service bays, car lifts, wash-down area and hoses.

The parking lot comprises five acres, located on the junction of Interstate 290 (I-290) on Niagara Falls Boulevard. Sullivan says it’s great location for this business because it gets a lot of passing traffic.

The building will feature three service bays, one wash bay and overhead doors that roll up to accommodate customers. The struc-ture consists of a combination of solid eight-inch masonry walls, made with split- and smooth-face concrete blocks, in the service area. The sales portion of the building is made up of cold-formed

metal framing and a four-inch split- and smooth-face block veneer. Atop the roof is a combination of thermoplastic roofing with metal over two projecting canopies.

Forget about sad ramen noodles and lukewarm oatmeal – students at-tending State University of New York’s Geneseo campus can enjoy hearty,

nutritious meals at the newly renovated

Red Jacket Dining Hall this fall.

Construction began on the Red Jacket

Dining Hall, a 22,144-square-foot facility,

in February of 2017. The dining hall has

had minor renovations over the years,

but it had not been fully renovated for a

few decades. Thus, a complete renova-

tion was in order. The Red Jacket Dining

Hall is one of several eating facilities on

the Geneseo campus.

“The facility was updated to give it

a new modern look,” John Burkhardt,

Picone Construction project manager,

says. The work included select demoli-

tion, concrete, masonry, carpentry, wa-

terproofing, insulation, roofing, HVAC,

plumbing, electrical, fire protection,

acoustical ceiling panels, wood ceilings,

modular metal ceilings, tile flooring, tile

carpeting, signage, toilet compartments

and accessories, gas fireplace, food ser-

vice equipment, doors, frames and hard-

ware.

There are two levels inside the din-

ing hall. The upper level features a “new

retail-style restaurant, dining area and

a study lounge”, whereas the lower level

is “dedicated to our newest pay-one-

price restaurant with American cuisine,

salads, deli, vegetarian station, gluten-

friendly station, desserts and a Chef’s

Corner for specialties.”

dustrial Power & Lighting Co. (electrical).

The architect on the project was Edge

Architecture.

“We needed to remove most of the

first-floor slab to install new under-

ground plumbing for the food service

equipment,” Burkhardt says.

Burkhardt adds that all the windows

were replaced, a new loading dock was

constructed, an elevator was added, a

large portion of the roof was replaced

and skylights were added.

“Inside the new main dining room, we

constructed a pergola that consisted

of heavy timbers, structural steel and

hanging cloud ceilings constructed of

distressed bars and steel Ts,” Burkhardt

says. “The new serving lines are con-

structed of stainless steel subframes

that had quartz and 3form applied to

them in the field. Ceilings consist of re-

claimed wood clouds, as well as perfo-

rated metal, repurposed wood shutters,

open spaces and acoustical ceilings.”

The dining hall boasts all-new ceramic

tile floors. The kitchen area features all-

new epoxy floors, as well as new kitchen

equipment. A new fire protection system

was installed, and the HVAC and electri-

cal were updated. F
