Heart Fund/Employee Assistance

Nursing Education, Employee Scholarships, and Training Programs Thank you for making the 20th Anniversary year at St. John’s Hospital Foundation a success! As a result of your generous financial support, our community hospital has leading medical equipment, highly trained clinical staff and nurses, and community accessible patient funds, like the Chad Kreft Mental Health Fund and the Women’s Health Care Fund, which make it possible for our neighbors to access health care even when they cannot afford to pay the bills.

This year also marked the 20th Anniversary of Run & Ride for the Cure, a kick-off to summer and an event for community members of all ages and athletic abilities. A 5K run and 15K bike ride hosted by the team at Skinny Skis, Run & Ride for the Cure is the lead contributor to the Cancer Patient Support Fund. In the spirit of this anniversary year, the Hospital Foundation also added a much needed patient fund: the Men’s Health Fund, providing support to local men who need assistance to pay for their medications, medical bills, or basic necessities such as rent and groceries while undergoing treatment. The 4th Annual Rock the Ride raised a record breaking $100,000 for local stroke and cardiac patients. The success of this event continues to exceed our expectations and generate tremendous support from all over the country!

With your support, the Foundation proudly transferred over $2.4 million dollars to St. John’s this year. The highlight of the year has been the outpouring of financial gifts and multi-year pledges that have enabled the Foundation Board to raise the capital campaign goal to $19 million for the construction of Sage Living. The generosity of our community will ensure a terrific future home for seniors who need long-term nursing care and memory care. This entire effort started with the voters of Teton County who, like all of us here at St. John’s, envisioned a brighter future for seniors in our valley! Thank you for believing in us—we are well on our way to building a New Home for A New Age.

This report to the community reflects contributions received during our Fiscal Year, July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019. Thanks to all of you, the Foundation was the recipient of 2,625 charitable contributions, an all-time high!

A new nuclear medicine/CT scanner, integrated technology of both nuclear medicine and CT imaging performed on one system, is coming to St. John’s. The current nuclear medicine scanner has reached its end of life and, due to patient volume and the services offered, the hospital needs a second CT scanner. The Symbia Intevo Bold from Siemens combines both of these machines into one scanner.

Thanks to the generosity of St. John’s Auxiliary, the Teton Pines Women’s Golf Association, and private donors, this innovative device will benefit many hospital patients. Nuclear medicine scans can image the heart and also help doctors find cancerous tumors. This is done by injecting the patient with a specific nuclear isotope that will be taken up by the organ of interest. The scanner develops remarkable 3D images of the organ. This information can show how much cancer has spread in the body and help determine if a treatment is working.

The scanner will also support the brachytherapy program at St. John’s. It can be used for placing seed implants in both the breast and prostate. Seed placements can take an hour and a half to do on the scanner, which is part of the need for a second scanner. In addition, the new scanner will be used for all types of orthopedic, soft tissue, and spine scans.

The Women’s Health Care Fund is an essential resource for local women who need help affording their health care. This fund provides financial support to purchase medications, access preventative health services, afford basic needs such as groceries, gas or childcare while in active treatment, and travel to appointments for services that are not available at St. John’s. In recent years, the number of applicants to the fund has increased, and thanks to generous supporters, the fund has been able to meet the growing demand. This past year, over 185 supported requests totaling $158,859 were granted to women in need.

The fund has evolved as needs in our community have changed. While the fund continues to help women access mammograms and annual checkups, we are seeing a greater need supporting high-risk maternity patients. Examples of these patients, who are our friends and neighbors, include a woman who had a 21-month-old baby and became pregnant with twins, a woman who had a history of preterm labor was pregnant with twins and needed to have a repeat C-section, and a single mother in her 4th pregnancy who had a history of pre-eclampsia and pre-term birth. For these patients, the funding provided help to cover medical bills.

Low-income pregnant women are supported through the Prenatal Entry Program, under the Women’s Health Care Fund. This is a community-supported collaborative project to provide access to healthcare by subsidizing the cost of prenatal care. Women who access prenatal care have better short- and long-term health outcomes. The goal is to ensure that every woman delivering a baby at St. John’s Health has received prenatal care.

ST. JOHN’S HEALTH FOUNDATION

Starting in January, 2020, the St. John’s Hospital Foundation will become the St. John’s Health Foundation. This change comes as St. John’s Medical Center becomes St. John’s Health. The new descriptor more accurately reflects the full range of the organization’s offerings to Jackson Hole and the surrounding communities. St. John’s plays an important role in the community, and provides preventative health and wellness programs which keep our community healthy.

The Foundation works closely with St. John’s to ensure that funds are being raised to support the key priorities, including essential medical equipment, capital campaigns, nursing education, patient funds, and more.

The branding process for St. John’s began with research and discovery, engaging medical center leaders, employees, clinicians, stakeholders, community members, current and prospective patients, and regional providers in focused studies around the St. John’s brand. Focus groups, in-depth interviews, and online surveys revealed key insights, gaps, and opportunities that drove and informed the direction of the work that needed to be done.

A small task force, including Foundation board members, worked to develop a new look and feel that accurately reflects St. John’s Health Foundation and our relationship with St. John’s Health. We are enthusiastic about the new brand identity and logo!

Special thanks to the local organizations who make the Women’s Health Care Fund possible: Community Foundation of Jackson Hole, Golden Rule Family Foundation, Soroptimist of Jackson Hole, and Stripping for a Cure.

We are grateful for the wonderful restaurant community who supported the Women’s Health Care Fund through specials during the month of October, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Café Genevieve, Fine Dining Restaurant Group, Orsetto Italian Eatery, and Pinky G’s Pizzeria.

Two years ago, Lou Wade started the Hope and Joy Birthday Club, named for her wonderful dogs who provide hope and joy. The birthday gifts Lou makes each month to the St. John’s Hospital Foundation celebrate her loved ones. The Hospital Foundation is fortunate to be the recipient of an increasing number of honor and memorial gifts from caring community members. We are pleased to share that we have enhanced this process to make it more joyful for the gift giver to share their gratitude with an honored recipient. Whether it’s to celebrate a new baby, birthday or any other occasion, or to commemorate the death of a family member or friend, we offer customizable cards to express your love, hope, or joy.

Tribute gifts can be made on the Foundation’s website. Donors can choose from a variety of designs and sample language for birthday or memorial cards or create a custom card.

Cards can be printed at home and delivered in person or by mail, or sent directly by email. Cards can even be scheduled to be sent by email on a future date. Join Hope, Joy, and Lou to honor friends and family members on birthdays or other special occasions by making a donation to St. John’s Hospital Foundation in their name. Supporting our community hospital with a meaningful gift and sending a custom card makes the experience even more enjoyable!

Upon completion, Sage Living will be the only long-term care community in the Jackson Hole area to provide skilled nursing care and feature private rooms, a memory support neighborhood for residents with Alzheimer’s and other dementias, and an acute physical and functional rehabilitation program for those recovering from stroke, traumatic injury, and illness such as COPD and heart failure.

Sage Living will replace the Living Center, a 5-star facility rated by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. After three decades of providing exceptional care, the long-term care needs of our community have outgrown the current facility. Award-winning care will continue at Sage Living, and build upon the new resident-centered model.

This year, the Living Center was named Best Nursing Home by US News & World Report. The talented team of care providers at the Living Center look forward to moving their exceptional programs into a new state-of-the-art home, offering important new services for our community.

Thank you to everyone who helped to make the Campaign for Sage Living a success! With the help of our entire community, and donors who made gifts big and small, we successfully raised $19 million to construct a new home for seniors.

Construction on Sage Living began in August 2019 and will take approximately two years to complete.

At the Sage Living construction site, the basement has been dug, utility lines have been moved, and footings have been put in place. A large crane will be on sight until May of 2020, which will be used to place concrete and set steel. Once the roof decking and the structural steel installation is completed, the building “frame” will be finished and the actual size of the building will be able to be seen. Then, the mechanical systems will be installed in the building and the construction crew will continue shelling in the structure. Windows and elevators will be installed in the summer of 2020.

20TH ANNIVERSARYThe Hospital Foundation’s 20th Anniversary was celebrated in style with a Roaring 20’s Rocking Sage Living Community Celebration in September at Teton Pines. The festive evening capped off a summer-long community art project that helped bring awareness to the Sage Living Campaign. Over 25 local artists hand-painted Adirondack rocking chairs, which were displayed at prominent local businesses throughout town, and as far as Jackson Lake Lodge, Teton Springs, and Snake River Sporting Club. The chairs were successfully auctioned off, and some chairs were purchased and donated back to Sage Living for future residents and visitors to enjoy.

The celebration, which included 175 guests—Foundation board members, donors, Medical Center employees, and community members—was put on by a sub-committee of Pulse members. The Pulse Advisory Committee was formed in honor of the Foundation’s 20th Anniversary and includes up-and-coming community leaders who serve as advocates for the hospital and support Foundation events and initiatives. Pulse is comprised of 20 members who meet quarterly and support the efforts of the Foundation. Five Pulse members volunteered to be on the planning committee for the Rocking Sage Living Community Celebration and successfully organized a “roaring good time” for the hospital.

The 20th Anniversary of the Foundation has been an exciting year and one of much reflection. Thanks to the founding members of this organization, Addie Donnan, James Eden, David Stokes, John Valiante, Shirley Cheramy, and Gloria Newton, and the current and past Foundation Board Members, as well as thousands of generous donors, the Foundation has been able to support the hospital in meaningful and important ways. Life-saving medical equipment purchases, scholarships for nurses, and patient funds for community members in need are just a few of the ways the work of the Foundation has helped our local hospital thrive over the past 20 years.

The Foundation is grateful for the continued support received from St. John’s Auxiliary. The members of St. John’s Auxiliary serve as ambassadors for the Medical Center and provide important financial support and service. Funds raised by the Auxiliary, through annual events such as Spring Fling Gala and the Golf Tournament, support medical equipment purchases and enhance services to better serve our community. Having raised more than $2.7 million to date, the Auxiliary remains instrumental to the success of St. John’s Hospital Foundation and St. John’s Medical Center. In recent years, the Auxiliary has spearheaded fundraising for 3D mammography and medical equipment necessary for the new brachytherapy program at St. John’s Medical Center. The Auxiliary’s current pledge is to support the purchase of a new nuclear medicine/CT scanner – integrated technology of both nuclear medicine and CT imaging performed on one system. This scanner will be used to image the heart and look for cancer in various organs, and also provide additional CT capacity for the brachytherapy program.

The Auxiliary also provides ongoing support of life enrichment programs at the Living Center. Auxiliary members host an annual holiday party for the residents and provide treats to compliment afternoon tea all year long.

This year, the partnership with St. John’s Hospital Foundation, St. John’s Episcopal Church, and the Jackson Cupboard was established after learning that girls in Teton County are missing school due to lack of access to personal hygiene products.The Tampon Team has distributed over 5,000 sanitary products in the first four months. Products are located in 11 locations around Jackson Hole, schools in Fremont County and at the Community Resource Center of Teton Valley in Driggs, ID

MEN’S HEALTH FUNDThe Men’s Health Fund was established in November 2018 with support from St. John’s employees who participated in a successful fundraising effort called No Shave November. In 2019 the fund helped many community members access health care that they would not otherwise be able to afford. The Men’s Health Fund is in place to offer financial support for preventative care, medications, and assistance to individuals who have to travel for their care.

EMPLOYEE GIVING St. John’s employees give back to the hospital and the community all year long. Through the I Care Employee Giving Campaign, employees choose to direct their contributions to the Most Important Need, Humanitarian Funds (including the HEART Fund supporting employees at their time of greatest need, the Women’s Health Care Fund, the Men’s Health Fund, and the Chad Kreft Mental Health Fund), Employee Scholarship Fund, and the Campaign for Sage Living. Employees support fundraisers such as Rock the Ride, Run & Ride for the Cure, and the Steve Winograd Memorial Diabetes Tennis Tournament, and they give to initiatives such as Mustaches for Men’s Health. Our employees make a difference everyday with the work that they do, and also as wonderful supporters of important funding initiatives at St. John’s Hospital Foundation!

DIABETES FUNDThe Annual Steve Winograd Memorial Diabetes Tennis Tournament was founded by local tennis pro Eddie Kolsky in 2001 in memory of a dear friend who died of complications from diabetes. The tournament is hosted each summer at the Jackson Hole Golf & Tennis Club.
