SAINT JOSEPH’S COLLEGE PROFILE

Saint Joseph’s was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1912 and chartered by the Maine Legislature in 1915. From 1912 to 1956, the

college was located on the grounds of the Motherhouse in the Deering district of Portland. In 1949, the name of the College was

changed from Saint Joseph’s to The College of Our Lady of Mercy, but with the change of site to Standish in 1956, the original name

of Saint Joseph’s was resumed. In 1970, Saint Joseph’s became a coeducational institution. The College began offering distance

education programs in 1976. The Division of Graduate & Professional Studies now offers distance education online.

The basic purpose of intercollegiate athletics is to provide students with outstanding athletic ability an opportunity to excel in

amateur competitive sports while pursuing the ultimate goal of completing their college degrees. Intercollegiate athletics also is a

way students, faculty, staff and alumni of Saint Joseph's College come together in support of "school spirit" and round out the

concept of creating a typical college campus setting.

Saint Joseph’s is the only college or university in the United States, in any division, to have “The Monks” as its nickname. What is a

“Monk”? The term “Monk” describes a priest or religious who has dedicated his life to the church. Throughout history, traits common

to Monks the world over include: “togetherness,” “a group coming together with one purpose,” “the struggles and importance of self-

sacrifice,” “physical and mental discipline,” and “inner energy” – all traits that make for a good teammate, a good student-athlete.

The Saint Joseph’s College athletic teams proudly wear the nickname, “The Monks.”

Our athletic facility includes the Alfond Center, which has four locker rooms, full size gym with running track, weight room, dance

room, training room, and swimming pool. We have four fields which include a soccer field, field hockey field, baseball field, and

softball field. Our baseball field, Larry Mahaney Diamond, was awarded the 2008 College Division ABCA/TURFACE Field Maintenance

Award by the American Baseball Coaches Association.
