2014Annual review of

Seeds of Hope

Who we are ‘We’re sowing seeds of hope’

We’ve now been open for three years. We’ve developed several services including the

Lounge Drop-in, the Parlour Café, Your Art, Stepping Stones (a parents and tots group) and S tch in Time (Kni ng). Our ESOL classes are popular. We have started a Money Skills Group. We are about to begin Cook, Sew and Grow classes.

Ian Callard - Chairman“The future belongs to the few of

us s ll willing to get our hands dirty” Rob’s newsle er poked. Our

challenges have included service cuts across the city and Food banks rarely

escaping the headlines. We’ve framed a response to both, increasing our ESOL and numeracy and literacy programme, and doubling our average Drop-In numbers. The year’s challenges have brought us alongside other agencies. Many students from Sheffi eld University have volunteered and help with services. Also, Hallam University sent students to help with marke ng. Homestart and 911 Project regularly hire our training suite. Our Mul -Agency event was well received. In summer 2013, a fl urry of incident reports dictated that we need to give our staff and volunteers a change of pace. We’ve introduced a services’ traffi c light system to an cipate pinch points and be er manage daily rotas. The team will have to be more pa ent to catch up with their expansion ambi ons! We keep our focus on the Centre making a diff erence in ordinary people’s lives. The Parlour

AIM 1

JaredI would like to say why the Sheffi eld Jesus Centre

is a good place. I come to the Centre’s Drop-In because the volunteer team are really friendly. You get a coff ee with a smile and something hot in your belly. You have good company whether you chat to the staff or you chat with the people like yourself; it’s all good. I don’t know what I would do if the Jesus Centre wasn’t there; it is a boss place for me. I am a recovering alcoholic who suff ers from depression. Christmas 2013 me was going to be a very lonely me for me. However, I spent Christmas with one of my Jesus Centre friends. I have made loads of new friends there in the volunteers and people who come there like Barry, Barrie, Jon, Shaun, Steve, Paul and more. The best thing I got from the Drop-In is a family who opened their arms and have welcomed me in when I was really lonely and missing my own family. Their names are Kevin, Sarah and Jess, we are good friends. I have begun to go to church, held at the Centre on Sundays. They always invite me to sit with them. I hope the Jesus Centre stays open for a long me.

Skills Classes We have seen the skills department take great

strides during 2013. We have reintroduced basic computer classes and started literacy and numeracy classes. All the skills classes are supported by volunteers, and would not be able to run without their valuable help. The ESOL class has had learners from over 25 diff erent countries and some of the learners have progressed to a end the literacy classes also. As we progressed through 2014, we’ve had our eyes set upon introducing cookery and sewing lessons and training our volunteers in mentoring skills. We also hope to be able to off er accredita on to our learners by the end of 2015. We have started a ‘Chris ans against Poverty ‘ Money Skills Group.

Miriam’s Story Miriam was one of the fi rst volunteers to work

in the Café at the Jesus Centre but had a problem with taking orders. A er a while she asked for help with spelling the words that were on the menu. Miriam was the fi rst candidate for the literacy classes and within a year went from not being able to spell much more than her name to wri ng stories and reading whole books. Many friends commented on the much improved text messages and how much Miriam’s confi dence had improved. Miriam recently made another step forward and off ered to support an ESOL learner who had very li le knowledge of English and has become a regular member of the Monday morning ESOL team. A life transformed by a ending classes in the Sheffi eld Jesus Centre skills suite.

Julie’s BaptismJulie came around the church, fi rstly, with

Claire, who has been associated with the Jesus Fellowship for over twenty years. Julie began a ending Sunday mee ngs and quickly developed a strong friendship with some of the other members, especially Rosie. A er several months, Julie ‘Heart Cry’ felt she wanted to become a commi ed Chris an and have a new beginning in life. Therefore, she began a ending Bap sm teaching in the Jesus Centre on Wednesday evenings, for the six week course. In February 2014, Julie was bap sed in Birmingham at one of the Jesus Fellowship annual events. A er her bap sm, Julie has encountered some trials in her life; however, she remains steadfast in her faith. Julie’s vision is to reach out to those who are unloved, lonely and misunderstood. Julie is presently seriously thinking about becoming a commi ed member of the church. Julie feels that Jesus has changed her thinking and life around in so many posi ve ways.

The Parlour CaféThe Parlour café is a great place to come

and relax if you want to fi nd a bit of peace in the midst of a busy day. It has a warm and welcoming atmosphere with very friendly staff . We provide delicious food and drinks at a good price! There is also free Wi-Fi available if you want to work or study over lunch or a cup of coff ee. We have more on off er in our Café than you would fi nd elsewhere. For example every Wednesday from 11.00am un l 1.00pm we have a kni ng group that meets to share skills, tea and friendship. Anyone is welcome to come along and see what it’s like. There is a monthly exhibi on on display around the Café for anyone to come and view. We create a friendly and peaceful environment where people feel welcomed and enjoy our great value food and drinks.

Rosie’s reviewI’ve been volunteering in the Parlour Café since

October and I can honestly say I’ve never before worked somewhere in a place which has so much personality. The Café environment is so cosy and welcoming – the perfect place to relax and take a break from the stresses of daily life. Unlike most chain restaurants, we value friendliness and inclusivity above making lots of money – in fact the favourite part of my day is ge ng to chat with customers. I had no idea when I started working here, that I’d meet so many interes ng people. Personally I think the most impressive thing about the Parlour Café is its value for money. We make the place welcome for everyone and therefore our prices are of good value, especially compared to the popular eateries on West Street. This makes the Café perfect for students like me who can’t usually aff ord to eat out and for anyone looking for a delicious and fi lling meal, without the huge cost.
