We see this truth in our readings to- day that remind us of the promise of Jesus to give us his Spirit that will be a force and power in our lives. Jesus bids us to remain in his love and to show that we are his friends by loving one another as he has loved us. Since Jesus loved us by laying down his life for us: “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends”, this means we must imitate Jesus’ self-sacrificing love. In this Mass, we pray, that the Lord will gra- ciously pour forth his Spirit upon us to enable us to love one another as Jesus loves us. We begin our sixth week of Easter looking forward to our celebra- tion of the Feast of the Ascension and of Pentecost. We believe that the same Holy Spirit given to us is at work in the leaders of the early Church. St. Peter tells us that, even though Jesus has made him earthly head of the Church it is through God’s Spir- it, at work in him, that the community grows St. John in his Letter and the Gospel reminds us that Jesus’ great commandment is that we love one an- other. Only when we love one another, as Jesus both taught us and showed us, are we truly his friends. Then Jesus’ joy will be in us and our joy will be complete. SIXTH WEEK OF EASTER

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

A s we approach the fortieth day of our Easter Season (this Thursday,

the Feast of the Ascension) we are reminded by Jesus that although he has left this world he will not aban-don us, he will not leave us orphans. We see this truth in our readings to-day that remind us of the promise of Jesus to give us his Spirit that will be a force and power in our lives. Jesus bids us to remain in his love and to show that we are his friends by loving one another as he has loved us. Since Jesus loved us by

laying down his life for us: “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends”, this means we must imitate Jesus’ self-sacrificing love. In this Mass, we pray, that the Lord will gra-ciously pour forth his Spirit upon us to enable us to love one another as Jesus loves us. We begin our sixth week of Easter looking forward to our celebra-tion of the Feast of the Ascension and of Pentecost. THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD THIS THURSDAY, MAY 13TH

HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION MASS 8:30 & 11:00 AM & 7:00 PM

Forty days after Easter we gather to celebrate the Lord’s Ascension into heaven. Before ascending Jesus instructed his apostles to go back to Jerusalem to await the coming of the Holy Spirit before witnessing to the good news of forgiveness and sal-vation. We have already been baptized in that same Holy Spirit. Let us rejoice that God’s good work has begun in us and pray for the grace to go forth ourselves as faithful witnesses.

T he theme of this year’s Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) “WE

ARE THE CHURCH, TOGETHER” emphasizes Christ desire for us to come together as the Church and to continue His mission of the Kingdom. As members of the one Body of

Christ, the Church, we recognize our responsibility in supporting our Parish, as well as the ministries of the larger Church community, our Diocese, in its mis-sion of service to the people of Brooklyn and Queens. Our goal for this year’s ACA is $25,248.00.

THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD

REFLECTION ON THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

On this Feast of the Ascension we celebrate Christ raised from the dead returning in glory to his Father in heaven. As we listen to the readings they will emphasis what the Apostles are to do. In the Acts of the Apostles, Jesus tells them to be his witnesses to the ends of the earth. Paul, in the Letter to the Ephesians, speaks about building up the Body of Christ and Mark writes in the Gospel they are to proclaim the Good News (the Gospel of the Death & Resurrection of Jesus) to the whole world. Jesus calls on his disciples to continue his mission; to proclaim the Gospel, to preach & teach, to baptize and to be his witness to the ends of the earth. We listen to these words as Jesus speaks them to us today. We too are called to continue his mission, to reach out, to witness and to build up the Body of Christ. To paraphrase the angels in the 1st Reading: DON’T JUST STAND AROUND LOOKING AT THE SKY, GO! DO SOMETHING!

PRAYER FOR THE CROWNING OF MARY: Let us give praise and thanks to the Lord as we keep this day in loving memory of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We gather today to crown this image of the Mother of Jesus. As we acclaim Mary, the Mother of God, as our Queen, and as the Mother of the Church, let us imitate her example and be attentive to the Word of God. As we honor Mary, who is higher than the cherubim and yet like us, let us pray that through her intercession we may achieve holiness of life, and a deepened faith, hope, and love, as we seek to do the will of God in all things. Let us pray: Father, you have given us the Mother of your Son to be our Queen and Mother. With the support of her prayers may we come to share the glory of your children in the Kingdom of Heaven. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever. Amen

A PRAYER FOR MOTHERS

Heavenly Father, you have given each person the precious gift of having a mother. Throughout the ages, mothers have been the unsung heroes of our lives, content with little

things; a smile, a thank you, a token remembrance. May all mothers learn from the example set by Jesus’ mother, Mary, our Mother in Heaven. Let us always remember our mothers as a treasure which you have given us, whether she is still here or in heaven. Pour down your grace on all mothers today and everyday and help each one of us to live our lives based on

the good examples, love and devotion which we have learned from them. Amen.

A MOTHER’S DAY GIFT TO ALL THE WOMEN OF THE PARISH: A PINK CARNATION Carnations have come to represent Mother's Day, since Anna Jarvis delivered 500 of them at its first celebration in 1908. This started the custom of wearing a carnation on Mother's Day. She chose the carnation because it was the favorite flower of her mother. After the May Crowing we invite all the women to take a carnation as s token of our love & affection on Mother’s Day.

ON MOTHER’S DAY

I said a Mother’s Day prayer for you to thank the Lord above for blessing me with a lifetime of your tender hearted love.

I thanked God for the caring you’ve shown me through the years, for the closeness we’ve enjoyed in time of laughter and tears. And so, I thank you from the heart for all you’ve done for me and I bless the Lord for giving me the best mother there could be!

A MOTHER’S PRAYER THANK YOU, LORD, FOR BRINGING MY CHILDREN INTO MY LIFE. HELP ME GUIDE THEM AND TEACH THEM THROUGH EXAMPLE

TO LEAD LIVES OF WISDOM AND STRONG LOVING FAITH. PLEASE LET THEM LEARN TO SERVE YOU ALWAYS IN THOUGHT AND DEED. AND REMIND ME, LORD,

TO ALWAYS BE THERE FOR MY FAMILY AS YOU ARE ALWAYS THERE FOR ME. AMEN
