Sixth Sunday of Easter May 10, 2015

It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit.

— John 15:16

Would you like to become a parishioner? Join us on May 17 in the gym, with donuts anytime between 9:00 and 9:30 a.m. or 10:30 to 11:15 a.m.

To all moms and those women who have been a motherly presence and guidance in our lives, I wish you a very happy Mother’s Day today. I stand in awe of your vocation! May you truly be blessed with the gratitude and affection of your children, not just this day, but every day! And, may God grant eternal life to our mothers who are no

longer with us, but whom we hold fond memories of and still miss their presence, guidance and love. Throughout the Easter season every Sunday we hear from the Gospel of John. In John’s gospel Jesus has called his followers by many different names. First he called them disciples and invited them to come to him, to see where he lived and to stay with him (John 1:35-40). Then he called them his beloved sheep for whom he would lay down his life (John 10). Last week, Jesus called his own branches growing upon the one true vine; i.e. himself. He also spoke of pruning and trimming them clean so as to make them fruitful branches. In today’s Gospel, the name by which Jesus chooses to call his own is a very intimate. “I call you friends”, says Jesus. “I no longer speak of you as slaves…instead, I call you friends” (v.15). The word “friend” is a term often overused that does not always convey its true meaning in our society. We call many people “friends”, but they are not all on the same level. Think of the one person you trust with your most intimate se-crets. The one who will accept you for who you are even if they don’t understand you (Bruce Jenner comes to mind here)! The one you can depend to stand by you through thick or thin. The one who will support you no matter what! It’s been said that a faithful friend is a sure shelter; those who find one find a treasure. A faithful friend is beyond price, no sum can balance their worth. A faithful friend is a life-saving remedy. After hearing today’s gospel there should be no doubts in our mind that this is the kind of relationship Jesus has with his disciples – and with us! There is an intimacy that leads us to sing that well-known song: “Oh! What a friend I have in Jesus”! Blessed Easter Season!

Host Greeters St. Thomas is in desperate need of host-greeters for the 11:15 a.m. Mass. This is a wonderfully fulfilling ministry. Host Greeters are the gracious, friendly people who welcome all who enter through the doors of St. Tho-mas. They are often the first face of hospitality to those who are new to the community, and so this ministry is crucial to the mission of St. Thomas as a welcoming church. Training is provided. Please contact the Liturgy and Music Office if you are able to help.

John Angotti at St. Thomas John Angotti will join the St. Thomas community for the 11:15 a.m. Mass on June 7—the closing Liturgy of the 30th Anniversary year. The celebration of the liturgy continues to be one of the most defining elements of this faith community and a continual source of inspiration. The parish is most thankful for the gifts and the wonder-ful ways in which John has helped shaped St. Thomas, and thankful that he will join the community in this cele-bration.

30th Anniversary Concert The Liturgy Office would like to thank all who had a part in putting together our 30th Anniversary Concert on May 1. So many people gave their time and talent to put together an extraordinary program for parishioners. Spe-cial thanks to Jerry Sebold for being our Master of Cere-monies and leading us through the musical years of St. Thomas. And of course, our St. Thomas Music Makers put in so much time to practice for this event. They give so lavishly of themselves week after week, and to add something like this on top of it can sometimes be a tough thing to manage. They went above and beyond to ensure that a wonderful time was had by all. The concert was video-taped, and will be uploaded to the internet. We will post the link to the video when it is posted.

For a special video congratulatory message from JOHN ANGOTTI, go to the St. Thomas Facebook page. While you’re there, won’t you “like” us to be privileged with future posts from your parish?

Ascension of the Lord In the Diocese of Joliet, the ob-servance of the Ascension of the Lord is transferred from Thursday, May 14 to Sunday, May 17. There-fore, Thursday, May 14 is not a holy day of obligation.

On Memorial Day, May 25, St. Thomas will cele-brate Mass at 9:00 a.m. in Church. There will be no 6:30 a.m. Communion Service on this day.

A Prayer for Our Parish God of goodness and mercy, of gentleness and kindness, of righteousness and faithfulness: be the light of our salvation and sustain our souls.

We offer the daily tasks that consume us to you, for we accomplish nothing without your grace.

We submit to your will, that we should love you with our everything and love our neighbors, and even our enemies, as ourselves.

Renew us and transform us by your steadfast love into the people of God. Amen.

Faith and Formation Commission—Adult C.A.R.E. CORNER

Do you ever feel as if you're invisible - as if no one knows you exist, you have no voice, you seem power-less to change anything for the better? If so, you are the perfect candidate for being chosen by God to do something great. Seriously! If we look at the stories in the Bible as a whole, we can see the pattern: God typi-cally chooses the poor, the outsider, the lowly, the powerless, the nobodies, the oppressed and the sinners – anybody at the bottom echelons of society – for true greatness. No wonder Jesus said “the last shall be first and the first shall be last.” (see Matthew 20:16) He knew His Hebrew Scriptures and He knew the pattern well. God seems to have a bias for the “anawim,” (see Zephaniah 3:12-13), the little ones, the humble of the earth . Perhaps you've heard this quote: God doesn't call the qualified, God qualifies the called. So if you feel you are among the unqualified, you might enjoy this upcoming series. We'll take a look at several charac-ters of the Bible who fell into that category, yet were chosen by God to leave a great and enduring legacy. We're going to start with a man on the run after com-mitting murder. What could God possibly do with a murderer? You'll find out if you meet us back here next week as we begin our series on how God uses the most unlikely candidates to accomplish great things.

Josh Goralski has grown up at St. Thomas. He has been involved since he was a toddler, helping with the ham and turkey drives during the holidays. As he grew in knowledge and size, he coordinated those drives. Josh also served during Sunday liturgies providing sound system support and expertise. As a teen, Josh had the opportunity to go on mission trips to West Virginia, Haiti, and Nicaragua. While in Haiti, he was deeply moved by the people of Duchity. In part, that experience helped to clarify for Josh what he wanted to do as his life’s work. Josh attended Rockhurst University majoring in nonprofit leadership studies. He is currently working full time at the YMCA national office in Chicago, con-tinuing his service commitment and leadership. On Sundays, you can find Josh at St. Thomas. Haiti is still an important part of how Josh lives his faith. He is heading an initiative to bring clean water to the people of Duchity.

To prepare for next Sunday’s homily, read the Gospel several times during this week, and let your mind and spirit begin to nurture the seeds of God’s word.

May 17 — John 17:11b-19

On this date, we celebrate The feast of Jesus' Ascension to the Father. He presents three specific requests to his apostles that still apply to us, their descendants. We are to remain close to the Father, avoid temptation, and share the Good News. Do we participate at Mass, follow the Cross and live and share our Faith? Are you a Sunday Catholic, or a 24/7 one?

The Marriage Alphabet Building a Strong Union On Friday, May 15, join Tom and Vicki Dau in the St. Thomas Gathering Area at 7:30 p.m. as they present “The Marriage Alphabet – Building A Strong Union,” based on their book of the same name. Passionate about helping men and women fix “their stuff,” they believe marriages were made to be successful, and that brief, simple re-minders can help us refocus our commitment to each other and the covenant we made. Married in 1987 and blessed with seven children, Tom and Vicki will expand on their ‘ABCs’ so you can gain insight and confidence to make your union better every day! Presented by the Marriage Enrichment Ministry of St. Thomas. Make reservations for you and your sweetheart by contacting Marge Coronado in the R.E. Office at [email protected], or 630.355.8980 x118.

Our first ride on June 6 will be to Wheaton (approximately 18 miles round trip) with a water and bathroom stop at St. Michael’s. During the rest stop we will pray a decade of the rosary at the outdoor Grotto garden before returning to Naperville. Each week will be a different destination in the 18 to 25 mile RT range with a break midway for water, bathroom, and prayer. The pace of the rides will be moderate. I am not a speed racer but aim to keep a consistent pace for good cardio exercise (and weight loss!) No need to register – just meet in front of church by 8:00 a.m. any Saturday in June or July.

Youth Ministry Corner I love the saying that goes, “It takes a whole village to raise a child.” That was certainly true in the case of my children. The St. Thomas faith community was cer-tainly a part of the village that helped to raise my chil-dren. Josh, Bethany, and Hannah were loved and cher-ished, affirmed and challenged, and nurtured and cared for by our faith community. At St. Thomas, I was blest to encounter many people (women and men) who nur-tured me and whose example helped me to be a better mother (and a better person!). In today’s Gospel, we are challenged to realize that we have been chosen and appointed to go and bear fruit that will last. Bearing fruit requires love, tender care, and an unselfish heart. St. Thomas is good at that. To-day, as we remember those women who have played a nurturing role in our lives, let us also celebrate how our St. Thomas faith community has been a source of life. God willing, we will continue to grow in our call and bear fruit that will last. Blessings, Peggy

The event was organized by the St. Thomas Immigra-tion Initiative Ministry. A pizza dinner was enjoyed prior to the video and thoughtful discussion followed, espe-cially regarding the economic impact of immigrants on American workers. Some who attended have arranged to show the video to outside groups and friends. The US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) and leaders of other major religious denominations have consistently advocated for Comprehensive Immigration Reform that includes reuniting and keeping families to-gether. St. Thomas parishioners have participated in the USCCB Justice for Immigrants Campaign along with parishioners of St. Nicholas in Aurora-a primarily Mexi-can parish. Contact Anne Schultz in the Outreach and Social Jus-tice Office-630.355.8980 x113 or [email protected] if you would like to borrow the DVD. Further information on the Church’s position on immigration can be found at www.usccb.org or www.catholicsandimmigration.org. Answers to many questions and concerns regarding US immigration policy can been found through the Immigration Policy Center at www.immigrationpolicy.org.

St. Nicholas Kermes Fair Come meet the families of St. Thomas’ Twinning parish of St. Nicholas in Aurora. About 95% of the St. Nicholas Parish community is from Mexico. Have a new cultural experience. Enjoy some great Mexican food and music. For the last several years a group of St. Thomas pa-rishioners have organized and participated in games for children on Sunday afternoon at the St. Nicholas Annual Kermes Fair. The Kermes Fair, held the last weekend in June, is an important fund raising event for St. Nicholas. Proceeds from St. Thomas activities help this effort, but more importantly provide an opportunity for St. Thomas volunteers to interact with the St. Nicholas parishioners.

How Can You Help? Volunteer— Families, teens, and adults willing to spend a couple of hours (more or less) between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 28 are very much needed. Volunteers opportunities include setting up, conducting games, distributing prizes and cleanup. Committee members will be present to assist. No special training required… just a willingness to be a friendly representa-tive of the St. Thomas the Apostle Faith Community.

Donate a Small Prize Each child who participates in our game booth receives a prize. Again this year we are inviting parishioners to consider donating one or more of the following items: Sidewalk chalk Jump ropes Crayons and coloring books New puzzles Bubbles Balls of all types New/like new books for young children through teens

Deposit donations by June 1 in the container desig-nated for the Kermes Fair in the Gathering Area. Please consider being a part of the developing relationship be-tween St. Thomas and St. Nicholas. To volunteer or for more information, contact Elea-nor Wegman at 630.801.1084 or [email protected].

DuPage United-Career Connect Metro West Update St. Thomas is a founding member of DuPage United In March 2014, DuPage United announced the founding of a new organization, Career Connect Metro West (CCMW), to recruit qualified people for manufacturing jobs and to connect job seekers to a pathway that will train and place them in these good jobs. Two important organizations agreed to work with CCMW to complete the picture-the Jane Addams Resource Corporation (JARC) and the Alliance for Illinois Manufacturing (AIM). The plan was for CCMW to recruit, JARC to train, and AIM to find jobs and place trainees into the jobs. It will be one year in June when Career Connect Metro West was launched in partnership with Jane Addams Re-source Corp and Alliance for Illinois Manufacturing. Highlights of the current progress of Career Connect include: 12 graduates, 18 people currently in training, and 8 people in tutoring to obtain the skills necessary to be eligible for the training program. On Tuesday, May 19, DuPage County Board members will attend graduation at JARC-where the training takes place. Board members will have an opportunity to meet with some of the graduates and learn more about the program.

The Truck is Here! The St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP) Spring Clothing Drive is this weekend with Vincentians present to collect your donations from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday and 7:00 am to 12:30 p.m. as well as 5:30 to 7:30 pm on Sunday. Clothing and home goods of all kinds are accepted-even non-working electronics and small appliances (recycled for parts) and ripped/torn clothing (sent to a secondary market). Bicycles are also accepted. Bikes are repaired and provided to people as a way to get around. Why should you save your donations for the St. Vincent de Paul Conference? Not only will you be helping the en-vironment by preventing items from going to the landfill but some of these items will be given a new life and pro-vided, at no cost, to those who have little. Other items will be sold in the SVDP Joliet, Aurora and West Chicago stores. Some of the proceeds from the sales is returned to the St. Vincent de Paul ministries in Naperville to help St. Thomas parishioners and neighbors with rent and utilities. Vincentians are in the parking lot awaiting your donations! So, Help Us Fill That Truck!

Prayer Shawl Ministry Offerings Celebrating 10 years of ministry 2005-2015 St. Thomas Prayer Shawls, Prayer Squares, Chemo-Caps are unique, spiritual gifts that provide the recipi-ents with an awareness of God’s comfort, healing love and presence. Hours of individual prayer goes into each item crafted. These items are available, without charge, to ALL who choose to request them and can be for one-self or for someone who is ill, recovering, struggling, or celebrating. A Chemo-Cap is a very soft yarn cap that is subtlety colorful and worn when there is a hair loss for any rea-son. With the spring air upon us, this might be just the time for such a thoughtful gift. A Prayer Square is a “take along” awareness of God’s presence in your life. It can be carried in a pocket, purse, or suitcase, tucked in a sleeve, or put under a pillow. The prayer square takes on holiness…for many prayers are wrapped inside. A Prayer Shawl and a Lap Blanket are also prayerful reminders of God’s love, healing and presence in you through the prayers of St. Thomas Prayer Shawl Minis-try. They are especially comforting at a hospitalized incident in life. Please stop by the Gathering Area May 9 through 23. A display of the decade time line and a picture de-piction of the Prayer Shawl Ministry in action is avail-able. Items will be shown as display only. Your coop-eration is appreciated. Please contact your parish nurse x 104 or Pastoral Care with requests. God Bless.
