Nativity Catholic Church 2 July 23, 2017

From the Pastor’s Desk Vocations Update – Nativity Parish has a rich tradition of promoting and supporting vocations to the priesthood and religious life. In the gospels, Jesus says: “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.” With that command in mind, let us continue to pray for all those considering a vocation to the priesthood and religious life. Furthermore, pray that those who live these vocations as well as those who have a vocation to marriage or the single life may continue to witness God among us in the way they live out their respective vocation. I’d like to use this week’s column to update you on those who are in the seminary and are either from the parish or have recently ministered here at Nativity.

Drew Woodke – In May, Drew finished his second year of theology at the St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in Boynton Beach, FL. At this time, Drew is finishing up his Spanish language studies in Guatemala. All seminarians in the diocese are asked to do Spanish language studies in order to better minister to those whose first language is Spanish. After that, Drew will enter his pastoral year of ministry at St. Ignatius Parish in Tarpon Springs. God-willing, Drew will be ordained a deacon in April of 2019 and ordained a priest in May of 2020.

Patrick Lambert – Patrick recently received his B.A. in Philosophy from St. John Vianney College Seminary in Miami. After much thought and prayer, Patrick has decided to enter the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal (CFR) or the Gray Friars. You may remember the founder of this community, the late Benedict Groeschel. The CFRs take on a variety of apostolates and minister in many different lands. If you would like more information, you can visit their website at http://franciscanfriars.com/. While Patrick heads to New York to begin this new chapter in his life, we know that his roots will always extend back to Nativity Parish.

Deacon Kyle Bell – Kyle was ordained a transitional deacon a few weeks back. Bishop Parkes presided at that ceremony, which took place at St. Joan of Arc Parish in Boca Raton, FL on April 1st. Since that time, Deacon Kyle has been ministering at St. John Vianney Parish, St. Pete Beach. He will return to St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in August for his last year of studies. Deacon Kyle will be ordained a priest on May 19, 2018 at the Cathedral of St. Jude in St. Petersburg. He will celebrate his first Mass HERE AT NATIVITY on Sunday, May 20, 2018, at 6:00 pm.

Anthony Astrab – Anthony is finishing up his studies in Spanish in Colombia. He has spent almost two months there participating in a full immersion program in the Spanish language. Anthony will return to St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in August and will continue with his studies there. Sometime in April of 2018, Anthony will be ordained a transitional deacon.

Weekly Reflection for July 23, 2017 Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

(courtesy of catholicsteward.com) Today’s readings remind us of the fact that it is God who guides us, and it is God who influences our decisions through the Holy Spirit. Today’s Gospel is again a series of parables shared by our Lord Jesus to teach us and to explain Holy Scripture. Jesus tells the Parable of the Weeds and the Wheat, which is relatively clear to us in terms of the facts. However, there is an important point within it that we must acknowledge. When the decision is made to allow the weeds to grow with the wheat, it is clear the separation will occur later, not at that moment. When the decision is made as to what will be harvested and kept and what will be destroyed, that is a decision made by God. It is somewhat a reflection of another point made in scripture. Today’s Gospel comes to us from the Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 13; however, in just a few chapters prior to that (Chapter 7) we are told “Stop judging, that you may not be judged…for as you judge, so will you be judged.” There is no question that there are “weeds” among the flock, but it is not our place to identify them and sort them out. That is the work of God. As Catholics and Christians we must take care not to be self righteous and judgmental. Before we call into question someone else’s walk with God, we need to scrutinize and take care of our own. Stewardship is what we do, not what we necessarily think others should do.

A Family Promise Success Story This story was captured from our most recent graduate, Milagros Cora, known to us as “Millie.” She and the children are now in their new home. Millie will be starting a new job soon making more money, which will definitely help keep her and the children housed in safe, affordable housing. Here is her story:

After several other shelter visits, I ended up at a hotel. I reached a point where I could not pay for the hotel. I had been on the FPGB waiting list since October 2016. I got persistent with contacting FPGB and finally I was accepted into the program with evictions. However, I was working with Lexington Law Services to remove the evictions. Though they removed 16 items from my credit report, none of those were my evictions. While in the program, my baby was born. After having a C-section, I was in a lot of pain but FPGB made me as comfortable as possible by providing a memory foam mattress for my bed. They provided a brand new bassinet which made me feel good for my newborn. While in the program I felt very loved and comfortable. The volunteers were very helpful with my kids. They really helped preparing their plates at mealtime, entertaining my two-year-old while I spent time with my newborn. I am forever grateful for each one of them that loved on me and my children. If it were not for FPGB my family and I probably would not be together. I believe the State may have taken my kids. FPGB provided shelter, food, and clothing; a place to sleep in peace at night; and a way to feel safe. I appreciate FPGB being so patient with me and my children.

An Invitation from the Office of the Lay Pastoral Ministry Institute

Pray & Reflect: Is God Calling You to Serve as a Lay Ecclesial Minister in His Church? “Whoever has ears ought to hear.” (Mt 13:43) Today’s Gospel presents three parables which are related to the Kingdom of heaven. As we allow Christ and his values to permeate our lives, we begin to experience the joy of belonging to his Kingdom. We, like the mustard seed or the small portion of yeast, though small and insignificant in appearance, are able to affect our surroundings in a major way. Ask yourself: Do I have ears to hear Christ’s call to build his Kingdom and walk with others seeking his Kingdom? Am I willing to live a life consistent with God’s will for his Kingdom? To speak with someone about the LPMI program, contact Dale Brown by calling 727.344.1611, ext. 5458 or emailing [email protected]. New classes begin September 9, 2017. Program brochures and registration forms are available at the parish office or online at the LPMI website: http://dosp.org/lpmi/. Scan the QR code to visit the LPMI website!

Happy 2nd Anniversary Laudato Si'! Sign the Pledge! Pope Francis has endorsed the Laudato Si' Pledge. It is a great way to help keep the Pontiff's encyclical message alive; inspire mass Catholic action on climate change; and enable individuals, families, parishes, and organizations to commit to the transition to renewable energy and push elected leaders to take strong action to protect our common home. The goal is to get at least 1 million Catholics to sign the pledge to bring the encyclical to life. The pledge seeks a commitment to: (1) Pray for and with creation; (2) Live more simply; and 3) Advocate to protect our common home. Sign the Laudato Si' Pledge at http://livelaudatosi.org/.

National Catholic Pledge to End the Death Penalty "All Christians and people of good will are thus called today to fight not only for the abolition of the death penalty, whether legal or illegal, and in all its forms, but also in order to improve

prison conditions, with respect for the human dignity of the people deprived

of their freedom." - Pope Francis Join other Catholics nationwide in committing to educate yourself and community about the injustices of the death penalty (including how it risks innocent life and fails victims' families), advocating for the dignity of all life (including those who are on death row), and praying for mercy and healing for all who are involved in the criminal justice system (including the victims of crime and their families, those in prison and on death row, communities where crimes are committed, and all who work in the legislative system). Take the pledge at https://catholicsmobilizing.org/action/pledge.

Travel Prayer Paths

God, my companion, teach me to follow the path you set before me, allowing it to lead me to a new frontier. May I celebrate its rough places and its smooth places; as I cross over hills, through streams, and by lost fields and ponds, I am traveling always toward You and with You. O God, I know that the heart is the truest compass. Grant me the wisdom to trust the path itself more than my own interests, and the strength to follow wherever Your will may lead me. Each path is an open road if You are by my side. Amen.

Nativity Catholic Church 12 July 23, 2017
