The FIG Men’s and Women’s Technical Committees convened for their final meeting of the year in Montreal (CAN) from November 7-13, 2013. Each committee held sessions related to issues within their individual discipline and also got together for common meetings in order to continue harmonization between rules for Men’s (MAG) and Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG).

The meetings took place at the Cirque du Soleil headquarters. Cirque has been an excellent partner of the FIG for many years and looked forward to some collaborative time with both technical committees. Presentations and introductions were made by Cirque in order to foster even better working relationships in the future, especially with so many Cirque performers coming from Artistic Gymnastics.

Major topics of discussions by both committees during their individual and common meetings included final review of the 2013 World Championships, composition of the upcoming Newsletters, compilation of interpretations needed for the updated Code of Points scheduled for

January 2014, Youth Olympic Games judge nominations, Judges Evaluation Programme (JEP) future planning, assignment of technical delegates for the upcoming World Cups and World Challenge Cups, as well as formation of proposals to be considered by the FIG Executive Committee.

Both committees also had the pleasure of reviewing and offering initial comments regarding the new FIG Age Group programme for Artistic Gymnastics presented by Hardy Fink (British Columbia), the FIG Academy Director. The programme especially provides a structured system to aide small and developing federations desiring improvement and growth.

The technical committees also enjoyed a historic tour of the newly renovated 1976 Montreal Olympic Stadium. Gymnastics Canada is planning a potential bid to host the 2017 Individual World Championships inside the Olympic

Stadium. The excursion to the venue and the city of Montreal brought a flow of emotion from Women’s TC (WTC) President Nellie Kim (BLR) who won three gold medals and a silver at the 1976 Olympic Games. The

well trained staff at the Olympic Stadium proudly pointed out Kim’s achievement as the first woman in Olympic history to score perfect 10’s on Vault and Floor Exercise. The TC members were impressed with the stadium staff’s knowledge of the stars from the Montreal Games.

This WTC meeting also marked the final one for 2008 Olympic All-around champion Nastia Liukin (USA) as the WAG Athlete representative, as she has completed her term and did not run for reelection. Newly elected representative Elizabeth Tweddle will join the WTC meetings in the new year.

Both committees extend a gracious thank you to the three hosting organizations: Cirque du Soleil (Vice President Bernard Petiot), Gymnastics Canada (President Jean-Paul Caron and Board Chairman Richard Crepin), and Gymnastics Quebec (President Serge Sabourin).

GBC’s annual awards reception honours some of the province’s bestGymnastics BC honoured the province’s top athletes, coaches and volunteers at its annual awards banquet on October 26 in Burnaby. Over 60 individuals and clubs, who achieved gymnastics excellence this past season received plaques, scholarships and recognition for their hard work.

Among the award winners were three women honoured for their lifetime contributions to gymnastics in B.C. Each of them has dedicated themselves in different ways to the sport and each has made a lasting legacy.

Whistler’s Sheila Mozes was honoured as a Life Member of the association for helping to build Whistler Gymnastics. Mozes was cited as a builder, an innovator and one of the greatest supporters of gymnastics in B.C. Among her lasting gymnastics legacies is the creation of a national program for training preschool gymnastics coaches.

Two Members of Distinction were honoured for their contributions. Chiyoko Ikeda of Twisters Gymnastics in Abbotsford was recognized for her outstanding work coaching recreational gymnastics. Ikeda, the mother of Olympic athletes Ken and Richard Ikeda, has spent more than 25 years at Twisters introducing generations of children to gymnastics.

Coquitlam’s Vivien Symington is the leader in B.C. in using gymnastics for special needs children. Her Empowering Steps Movement Therapy Program serves about 100 children annually, both with autism and other types of motor impairments. Preliminary research suggest that the program produces highly significant improvements in many key areas for children with disabilities.

Flicka’s Scott Morgan surprised a lot of people by qualifying for the men’s floor final at his first world gymnastics championships and more than held his own against some of the sport’s brightest stars to finish eighth.

Kenzo Shirai of Japan won gold with 16.000 points, followed by silver medallist Jacob Dalton of the United States with a score of 15.600. Four-time men’s all around world champion Kohei Uchimura of Japan took the bronze at 15.500.

Morgan’s routine did not have as high a degree of difficulty as most of the other finalists but he executed a solid routine with a score 14.833 points.

“I have a difficult routine but not a huge start value like the winner from Japan,” said Morgan. “I went in and hit an amazing routine for me and stuck most of my landings.”

Just qualifying for an event final at the world championships puts Morgan in a select group of Canadian gymnasts who have accomplished the feat in one of the world’s most competitive sports.

The last Canadian male gymnast to compete at a world championship final was 2004 Olympic champion Kyle Shewfelt of Calgary, who won bronze on floor in 2006.

Morgan ranked sixth after the first day of qualification on Monday and had to wait until the last group of about 30 competitors competed Tuesday to know if he had managed to hang onto the top eight finish needed to go on to the final.

While the final qualification group was competing at the Antwerp Sport Palace Tuesday morning, Morgan was training in another gym, trying to keep tabs on results with a dodgy Internet connection.

“The Wi Fi was terrible so we were refreshing the page constantly to see the results,” said Morgan. “We were all biting our nails and when it came up I was seventh and had qualified for finals there was a nice little celebration.”

Morgan, 24, came close to walking away from the sport as a teenager, but returned to the Flicka Gymnastics Club in North Vancouver in 2007 after a four-year hiatus.

Vali Stan, his longtime coach at Flicka, welcomed Morgan back with open arms, but expectations were not high after so many years away from competitive gymnastics.

“At the time I didn’t really know what I was getting back into but I’m so glad that I did,” said a smiling Morgan in the

interview area at the Antwerp Sport Palace.

“These past three or four years have been absolutely amazing leading up this world championship and I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

Morgan said the entire experience up to and including Saturday’s floor final has fueled his desire to push harder to see how far he can go.

“It was incredibly nerve wracking but so exciting to compete here and I want to do it all over again. It’s one thing to think about it and to dream about it and it’s another thing to feel it and it’s absolutely amazing.”

Stepping stone for men’s team

Twisters’ Ken Ikeda finished 40th on pommel horse but had to cut short his parallel bars routine after jamming his finger just after getting started on the apparatus.

Rounding out the Canadian results, Kevin Lytwyn of Stoney Creek, Ont., also came up with a strong effort on floor and rings placing 17th and 29th respectively but faltered on high bar. Anderson Loran of Saskatoon placed 26th on high bar.

“Overall, the results are certainly a stepping stone and we have a pretty good idea now of what we have to do to qualify for the next Olympics,” said Canadian national team director Tony Smith of Calgary.

“I can’t say I was completely satisfied in terms of where I think we need to be and what we’re capable of doing, but it’s a building block.”

After just missing out on qualifying a full team for the 2012 Olympics, Smith is aiming to get the squad back on track leading to the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Briannah Tsang (Flicka) placed eighth at a women’s World Cup meet on Saturday featuring some of the world’s top competitors.

Elizabeth Price of the United States took the gold with a score of 58.032 followed by Olympic bronze medallist Larisa Iordache of Romania in second with 57.998 points and multiple world championship medal winner Vanessa Ferrari of Italy in third with 56.866.

Tsang finished the all around with a score of 50.132 and earned her best mark on vault with a double twisting Yurchenko.

Earlier in the weekend Tsang and her Canadian teammates finished fifth in the Team Challenge competition leading up to Saturday’s World Cup meet.

China edged Germany for top spot in the qualification with teams from Russia and Switzerland claiming the other two spots in Sunday’s final after placing third and fourth respectively.

In addition to Tsang, members of the Canadian team were Casey Carvalho (Revolution Gymnastics), Stefanie Merkle (Revolution Gymnastics) and Jordyn Pedersen (Manjak’s Gymnastics)

Tsang delivered the Canadian team’s best individual result with a sixth on vault while Merkle was tops all around with a ninth on vault and beam and a seventh on floor.

Pederson was the top Canadian on uneven bars in 15th spot.

Joshua Stuart at Mexico Cup

At the Mexican Open in Acapulco, Joshua Stuart (Richmond)

finished 11th in the men’s event.

Stuart, in his second year on the Canadian senior men’s team, scored a total of 79.400 points

Sabrina Gill (Futures) was also 11th scoring 50.200 points.

Jossimar Calvo of Colombia and Roxana Popa of Spain and won the men’s and women’s all around titles.

The Romanian-born Popa came from behind to overtake first-day leader Peyton Ernst of the United States with a score of 57.350 points while Calvo increased his

lead on the final day of the men’s competition to win gold with a score of 90.50 points.

Moors “floors” at Toyota International | Twisters gymnasts compete strongly

Canada’s high-flying Victoria Moors nailed her signature move in the women’s floor routine to win her second gold medal in as many days on Sunday at the Toyota International gymnastics event.

Moors (Dynamo) landed her dazzling double-twisting, double somersault in the layout position, en route to a score of 14.600 points in the women’s floor exercise, more than a full point ahead of runner-up Pia Tolle of Germany with 13.400 points.

In the men’s competition, four Twisters gymnasts were on the floor. Zachary Clay was 11th on both vault and parallel bars, Robert Watson was 10th on parallel bars, Ken Ikeda tied for sixth on high bar and Steven Chaplin placed ninth on high bar.

Setting goals is one of the single most beneficial aspects of sport as it provides the foundation for how coaches and athletes go about practice, training and competition plans.

It has been proven over and over again that goal setting is one of the most effective techniques for enhancing motivation and performance.

SIRC has compiled articles that speak about athlete motivation, performance, achievement and tips for goal-setting.

Motivation

Every successful person whether that be an artist, sports person or leader has set goals which have driven and directed their efforts in their quest to be the best they can be.

Goal setting is an extremely powerful technique for enhancing performance so it is one of the most important strategies you can implement for success in any environment. Goal setting helps to focus attention and it is critical to maintain and enhance motivation.

Read More: http://www.thesportinmind.com/articles/goal-setting/

Performance

Goal setting is certainly not a one-off, or once a season activity. It’s part of a continual process or cycle of review, goal setting, preparation and performance.

All the time you are gaining new information about your performance, each time you train or compete, and this information can help you to get better at setting goals.

You can start setting goals at any point, but it makes sense to have a regular review of your goals, perhaps after each of your main meets – which may come at the end of a cycle or season.

Read more: http://www.swimpsych.com/2012/04/05/goal-set t ing-competitive-swimming/

Achievement

In psychology, goals act as regulators of human action, and challenging, specific goals will lead to better performance than “achieve your best” or “no goal” situations.

So, it is easy to see why, among coaching circles, goal setting programs are incorporated to help athletes achieve success.

But setting the right types of goals for individuals can be a challenge, as incomplete goal setting can have a negative effect on an athlete’s performance.

Goal setting tips

Goal-setting is like a map – the big-picture goal is the destination, Goals should be straightforward and emphasize what you want to happen.

Goal-setting will give you direction and help with your motivation, as well as increasing your satisfaction and self-confidence in your performance.

The map will help you track your development towards reaching your full potential. As an athlete, you will need to know where you are heading.

A way to help you remember the make-up of effective goal-setting is to use SMART goals.

Everyone knows that exercise comes with many health benefits - while many of us go to the gym to trim up our waistlines, regular physical activity works out your brain too!

When we move, our bodies release natural chemicals and hormones which improve mood as well as increasing oxygen production to the brain that helps it function more efficiently.

In fact, studies have shown that exercise help students perform better in school, slows mental decline when aging and positively affects our mental health.

So if you’re not already incorporating physical activity into your schedule, now is a good time to start!

Brain Power

The brain is an extremely complex organ which is responsible for controlling all the other organ systems of the body.

Increasingly, regular physical activity is being recognized as an important factor in the development/maintenance of a healthy brain, and has even been shown to prevent brain-related illnesses such as Alzheimer’s disease.

But just how much physical activity is needed and and how does an increase in physical activity impact learning and memory?

Academics

If you’re in the habit of driving your children to school, you’re not really

doing them much of a favour.

Rather, you should let them transport themselves to school, because that will make them concentrate better at school.

This is one of the main conclusions of a comprehensive Danish project – the ‘Mass Experiment 2012’ – which set out to examine the link between diet, exercise and the power of concentration.

Mental Health

The physical benefits of exercise have long been established, and physicians always encourage staying physically active.

Studies show that it is very effective at reducing fatigue, improving alertness and concentration, and at enhancing overall cognitive function.

Scientists have found that regular participation in aerobic exercise has been shown to decrease overall levels of tension, elevate and stabilize mood, improve sleep, and improve self-esteem.

About five minutes of aerobic exercise can begin to stimulate anti-anxiety effects.

Life Long Learning

A new study has shown

that regular, non-strenuous physical activity can substantially reduce the risk for vascular dementia, a slow, progressive thief of memory and cognitive function similar to Alzheimer’s disease.

And while that news is exciting, it’s not something to work up a sweat over—literally.

The researchers found that easy-to-perform, moderate activities—such as walking, stair climbing and gardening—provided as much brain benefit as more rigorous, physically demanding activities.

SIRC webinars Clubs

GBC welcomes two new clubsSaltspring and DEKA Trampoline join Gymnastics BC

Gymnastics BC is pleased to welcome two new full member clubs: Saltspring Gymnastics Association and DEKA Trampoline in Kelowna.

The main focus of Saltspring Gymnastics is recreational gymnastics and public access programming. The new programs launch this fall and the staff had a busy summer planning and training for their first participants!

Led by head coach, Angelo Despotas, DEKA Trampoline offers trampoline programs in Kelowna. DEKA is sharing space with fellow GBC club, Kelowna Gymastix.

DEKA stands for “Developing Kinesthetic Awareness” and is also the direct translation to the number “10” in the Greek language (coach Despotas’ second language). With the additional connection to “10” being the magic number in gymnastics, it is a fitting name for the new club.

It is the intent of GCG to provide a monthly update to our membership. Although much of our news is updated on a regular basis on our website, the intent of this “GCG Monthly Update” is to provide general information on some areas that do not appear on our website, social media and e-newsletters.

World Championships Results

Canada’s teams performed well at all three Championships:

RG World Championships –September – Kiev, UKR

Patricia Bezzoubenko participated in her first worlds as a Senior athlete and finished a very respectable 25th AA, and 19th with Ribbon. She was first reserve for individual AA finals.

Patricia’s ranking at worlds is the highest Canadian individual ranking since 2008.

The second Canadian gymnast, Annabelle Kovacs, also competing in her first worlds, finished 75th AA.

Artistic World Championships – October – Antwerp, BEL

The Artistic World Championships were an apparatus, not a team competition format, and Canada sent four female and four male athletes.

In the WAG competition, 2012 Olympians Ellie Black and Victoria Moors led the Canadian team.

Victoria performed a new skill (double salto backward stretched with double twist) which was recognized by FIG and will be named “the Moors”.

Victoria qualified for AA finals and

finished 10th. Her floor score of 14.633 achieved during the AA finals provided a clear indication that Victoria is a serious medal contender on this event.

Ellie finished the qualification competition in ninth place on vault (first reserve for finals), ninth place on floor (qualified for finals due to two per country rule) and 10th AA.

In the floor finals, Ellie finished eighth and in AA finals Ellie finished 13th.

These outstanding Canadian performances were supported by very good, consistent performances from two young senior gymnasts, Kaitlyn Hofland and Maegan Chant.

he MAG team consisted of Scott Morgan, Kevin Lytwyn, Ken Ikeda and Anderson Loran. The rebuilding MAG program is focusing on increasing the start values of routines to a level that is comparable to the finalists at World Championships.

Scott Morgan performed an outstanding floor routine in the qualification round and qualified to floor finals, finishing eighth.

The MAG team met its performance goals of having three athletes

with start values comparable to Worlds finalists, and of having two athletes place in the top 16.

Trampoline World

Championships – November – Sofia, BUL

Rosie MacLennan served notice at the two World Cup events in September in October, by winning the gold medal in Loule (POR) and the bronze medal in Odense (DEN) World Cups.

Rosie then went on to cap an outstanding fall by becoming the 2013 World Champion in November. Rosie joins Karen Cockburn (2003) as the only Canadian World Champions.

Samantha Sendel made an amazing comeback this

year and qualified through to finish fifth in finals.

The third Canadian woman, Samantha Smith, finished 11th, giving Canada three women in the top 12. The three women also combined to give Canada a silver team medal, the fourth consecutive team medal for Canadian women at worlds since 2007.

Jason Burnett, who had won a silver medal in Loule, was unable to compete at worlds this year due to injury.

The three remaining members of the men’s team (Kyle Soehn, Keegan Soehn and Sebastien St-Germain) finished 27th (Kyle) and 30th (Sebastien), while Kyle and Keegan combined to a fourth place finish in men’s synchro.

In Double Mini, the Canadian men’s team (Denis Vachon, Dennis Oppenlander, Keegan Soehn and Jon Schwaiger) and the women’s team (Corissa Boychuk, Lexi Giesbrecht,

National Gymnastics Week

Please note that the “National Gymnastics Week” will now be called “Canadian Gymnastics Week”. For the upcoming year, the event will be held from 9 to 15 February 2014.

The focus this year will be the promotion of gymnastics through social media, specifically a club photo contest on Facebook, highlighting the variety of activities conducted by clubs across the country in this week long celebration of gymnastics.

The GCG on-line auction will also be re-introduced this year.

Details of the Canadian Gymnastics Week, the photo contest and on-line auction will be provided in a separate email and at the event website.

Own The Podium (OTP) Funding Process

The WAG and TG annual OTP Review

Meetings took place on November 27. In preparation for these meetings program staff are required to conduct a complete analysis of the past year’s program, and to present a full high performance plan for the next year, including performance benchmarks leading to Rio 2016, funding requests and gap analysis.

It should be noted that OTP’s focus is on winning medals at World Championships and Olympic Games and our targeted OTP funding each year is a function of achieving the benchmarks that have been established to this end.

This targeted support from OTP very important in assisting us to achieve these benchmarks, as the overall GCG national team budget does not meet the needs of team preparation and performance at a standard of international excellence.
