From the Head of Junior School

Dear Parents Homework is an aspect of school that generates mixed feelings amongst children and parents. As a teacher, I well understand children working on core skills until they master understanding and automaticity. This obviously applies to the fundamentals of school including sight words, spelling, reading and times tables. Junior School boys have between 150 and 160 nights of homework in any given year. This is an opportunity to reinforce key concepts, learn how to spell the word ‘because’ (along with many other words) and read each night. Regular reinforcement also helps the boys learn times tables, understanding that 7 times 8 equals 56, an answer that never changes. Comparisons between school work, playing sport and learning a musical instrument can all be made. If you wish to play the trumpet well, you need to play it regularly. If you wish to be a good batsman and play a cover drive consistently well, you need to hit many cricket balls. Homework is the chance for boys to improve their academic work through regular practice. Last year Mr Alastair Bain, one of our class teachers, suggested Homework Club should increase from one afternoon each week to four afternoons and run from Monday to Thursday. This commenced at the start of this year and has been well received by parents and boys. This allows boys from Years 4 to 6 to do their homework after school, in a classroom with the support of one of our teachers. I thank Mr Bain for his suggestion, along with the staff who run this club across the week. I welcome feedback from parents about this new initiative.

Eisteddfod The choral section of the Toowoomba Eisteddfod commences in the near future. As is traditionally the case, all Junior School boys will be involved in various sections. The key dates are as follows:

Thursday 17 May, evening session

Sunday 20 May, morning and afternoon sessions Correspondence was sent home last week providing specific session details. Singing in our all boys’ choirs known as Voiceworks or Tribe is an important part of the boys’ broader development. This is viewed as a team event, with all members of the team being expected to attend. I ask that parents make every effort to have all Junior School boys at their sessions on time and in Blazer Uniform.

Staff matters Mrs Alison Cantle, part-time Learning Support teacher for Years 5 and 6, is on leave until the end of the term. Mrs Jo Jones has kindly agreed to cover Mrs Cantle’s lessons during second term. Mrs Jones is a highly experienced teacher, who currently works at our School teaching Health and PE (part-time). Mrs Sue Fuss will cover Prep to Year 2 PE, along with Health during this time.

TGS App If you have not yet taken the time to download the Toowoomba Grammar School App, I would encourage you to do so. The App, which is free, is used to send out reminder notices about school events and allows you to access this newsletter more readily on your iPhone (or similar), iPad and other devices. All boys in Year 5 and Year 6 are required to have the App on their iPads. In addition, the App is used for weekly information about GPS sport. If you installed the App some time ago, you may need to go into the App Store and check if it requires updating. National Testing – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) Boys in Year 3 and Year 5 will be involved in the National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) in less than two weeks. Testing will occur on Tuesday 15, Wednesday 16, and Thursday 17 May. It is important that boys arrive at school on time as this National Testing will commence at 8.25am. Boys in these year levels who arrive after the bell will not be able to enter their classrooms and interrupt other students once the testing has commenced. I ask for the support of all parents ensuring boys arrive at school on time. Regards Scott Campbell Head of Junior School

From the Deputy Head of Junior School Haircuts Recently I have noticed a few boys who require a haircut. “The school’s regulations concerning haircuts are as follows: the hair must not touch the collar, and must be neatly shaped at the back of the neck. The ears must not be obscured and side-levers must not extend past the middle of the ear. Extremes of hairstyles are not permitted (including very short haircuts) Boys are not permitted to dye or colour their hair.” This is an excerpt from the Student Handbook. Nude Food Day Just a reminder that Nude Food Day in the Junior School occurs each Tuesday. The boys are encouraged to bring to school food that is not prepacked for morning tea and lunch. There are two main reasons for supporting this. One is to promote healthy eating, good nutrition and limit the intake of processed foods. The other reason is environmental, where the amount of wrapping (paper/plastic) used is reduced. We hope that boys and parents will support this initiative. Food ideas include pieces of fruit and vegetables, salads, sandwiches, pasta, wraps and ham and cheese roll-ups. We’re for the gorilla. Are you? Your reliance on technology can impact wildlife. Many mobile phones contain coltan which is in huge demand for today’s high tech devices. Some coltan is illegally mined in gorilla habitat in Africa. By recycling your mobile phone through Taronga’s “They’re calling on you” campaign you’ll be reducing the demand for coltan, saving your phone from landfill and raising money for gorilla conservation. Recycle your old mobile phone to help gorillas in the wild. Please drop off your old mobile phone at the front office. All the money raised from recycling your old phone supports vital gorilla conservation projects in Africa through the Jane Goodall institute. Vision Screening: helping children learning to read Our school vigorously promotes a love of reading through a variety of ways. These include 30 minutes of DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) time each day, a well-stocked library; participation in the Readers’ Cup and workshops with a variety of authors. In order to help the boys become great readers, the school carefully monitors their development through a variety of tools such as Reading Benchmarks, standardised testing and screening tools. Screening is a brief, simple procedure used to identify potential developmental issues, which may affect a student’s ability to reach his full academic potential. Teachers use the results of screening assessments to inform their teaching practices. Currently, Prep boys take part in Occupational Therapy Screening of fine motor skills and visual motor integration skills. This year, the school is introducing a new screening tool to assess eyesight as well as tracking and eye coordination ability. Next week boys in Year 1 will undertake Vision Screening at school. Somerville Merrin Neilson Optometrists will administer the screening. Teachers and parents will receive a copy of the results.

NAPLAN NAPLAN is fast approaching (May 15, 16, and 17) and sometimes the boys feel a little anxious about the tests, especially if they are new to the process. Here are some strategies that you can implement to help your son achieve to the best of his ability on test day. (Source: https://www.kidspot.com.au)

1. ‘Being there’ emotionally During times of stress, children usually need extra nurturing, comfort and understanding from their parents and carers to help them feel secure and confident. Be open and receptive to how children are feeling as well as provide comfort and attention when needed.

2. Discuss feelings Encourage children to talk about how they feel. Listen with empathy so they feel understood and know that their feelings are normal. Help your children to understand that talking about feelings can help to manage them.

3. Support children’s confidence Teach children to be brave by showing them you believe they can do it, and encourage them to ‘have a go’ even if they are feeling nervous. Providing positive feedback for effort, celebrating successes and encouraging them to keep trying will help your children to feel confident in approaching assessments.

4. Help with relaxation skills Breathing slowly to calm down and helping them to imagine themselves coping well during a test are helpful ways of managing anxiety. Doing it with them is a fun way to start.

5. Teach helpful thinking Instead of saying to themselves “I can’t do this”, encourage them to say, “I’ll give it a go”.

6. Lead by example Show your child how you cope positively with feeling anxious or stressed by thinking aloud e.g. “I feel a bit nervous, but I’m going to try my best”. Remaining calm and positive when your son is feeling anxious can help him to feel more confident.

7. Help your child have clear expectations Talking through what will happen. Mark the days on your calendar and show enthusiasm towards the process leading up to the testing period. Your son’s teacher will have explained the process that will occur on each day during in-class preparation sessions.

8. Discuss problem solving Brainstorm situations that might arise during the test and then come up with possible solutions with them. For example, ask them what are three things that they might be able to do if they freeze in the exam and feel sick – possible strategies include taking 10 slow breaths to calm down and refocus, taking a sip of water if it is available or letting a teacher know they feel unwell.

9. Teach confidence-building tricks For example, looking through the paper and completing questions they know they can answer first before trying ones that are more difficult.

Your son’s teacher will have explained many of these strategies as part of our NAPLAN preparation program. However, reviewing these at home will help to reinforce them. If you have any queries about NAPLAN, please contact me.

ANZAC Day 2018 Last week the School held its annual ANZAC Day Service for boys from Years 3 to 12. In 2015 and on the centenary of ANZAC Day, Mrs Jess Galbraith (Prep - Year 3 Co-ordinator) felt it was important that there was some form of memorial for ANZAC Day in the Junior School and appropriate for younger children. Mrs Galbraith created large letters made from sand spelling out the word ‘ANZAC’. Boys, staff and parents brought in flowers to lay on these letters, with these remaining in place on the ANZAC Day holiday. This was well received by our community and has now become a part of our School and its traditions. We appreciate what Mrs Galbraith has brought to our School, and the respectful manner in which the boys conducted themselves while placing the flowers on our memorial.

We thank Mrs Jayne Hodge, grandmother of two Junior School boys, Phoenix and Lewis Bird, for providing her Installation Piece, featuring 950 handmade poppies. This number represents the number of service men and women from our region who have lost their lives in war.

After School Care What we have done this past fortnight For all parents who are unaware, my name is Rhiannon Newman; I started Coordinating After School Care at the beginning of term 2. This past fortnight we have spent a great deal of time discussing Anzac Day and what it means to us. The boys did an amazing job at making their own wreath that is currently being displayed in the service. The boys have also enjoyed playing a variety of both indoor and outdoor games. The most popular indoor games so far this term are Trouble, Chess and Guess Who. The most popular outdoor activities include dodge ball, soccer and tag.

What we have planned for the next week Next week we will be focusing on the environment and what we can do to look after the Earth we have. The boys are going to be planting a variety of different flowers and vegetables; it will be their responsibility along with educators to ensure that the plants get watered daily and are looked after properly.

What to do if your child is absent from After School Care? Please remember parents if your son will be absent from the service call us on 0421 570 461 or notify the customer experience team.
