Salem International vs. Virginia State
Trojans Outpace Tigers
Salem, WV -- In the first game played at the T. Edward Davis Gymna-
sium in two years, the Salem International University women’s basket-
ball team dropped a contest to Virginia State University, 103-33.
Salem Freshman Forward Shelby Howell (Beverly, WV) tied the game
in the opening minute, 2-2, making her the first SIU basketball player to
score in the newly renovated gymnasium floor since the 2008 season.
However, VSU (2-0) would score the next 14 points and run out to a 16
-2 lead. The Lady Trojans never looked back.
Carrie Moore (Elkins, WV) led the way for SIU with 10 points. Point
Guard Brittany Wells (Kissimmee, FL) added seven points and two re-
bounds for the Lady Tigers. Freshmen Vanessa Jones (Jacksonville, FL)
chipped in with five points and four boards and Tre’Shaun Robertson
(Melbourne, FL) had a solid defensive game, coming down with six re-
bounds and one blocked shot to go along with her five points.
“We’re taking a game-by-game approach,” said SIU Head Coach Kellie
Snyder. “We’ll review the film and work hard on our miscues. The im-
portant thing now is to get ready for Mansfield.”
The Lady Tigers (0-2) return to action this weekend when they travel to
Mansfield, PA to compete in the Mansfield University-Comfort Inn
Classic. SIU will face Mansfield University at 3:00pm on Saturday and
Notre Dame College (OH) at 1:00pm on Sunday.
