Task 10: Magazine article (18 marks)

Fad or Fashion?

More and more teenagers are getting tattoos nowadays because they are influenced by the mass media

and celebrities. Some get tattoos because they are attracted by the designs. Others see them as a form of

self-expression. Some teenagers want tattoos because they are no longer taboo in our society.

Most teenagers place their tattoos on their legs (30%) or backs (30%). Some place them on their

shoulders (15%) and arms (15%). A smaller percentage of them (10%) place them on their necks.

One of the medical dangers of tattooing is that you may get an allergic reaction to the ink. You can get

skin infections. You also run the risk of getting a blood-borne disease such as HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B

or C when you get a tattoo.

Most teenagers, about 70%, regret getting their tattoos. Only 30% of them do not regret getting them.

The reasons for regret include ‘being negatively looked upon by other people’ (70%) and ‘getting an

infection’ (30%).

Before getting a tattoo, you should understand that the current fad for tattoos may not last but a tattoo

can last forever. You should wait until you are mature enough to make an informed decision. If you

Subject: Things to do

Hi Ricky,

I’ve got one more thing for you to do.

I want you to complete a fact sheet about permanent tattoos for the new magazine. I’ve

written some headings for you. Put the fact sheet under the section Special Reports.

I interviewed a dermatologist, Dr. David Lee, last month about the medical dangers of getting

tattoos. I’ve attached a transcript of the interview to this email. You may find it useful. You

can also refer to the results of an opinion poll published in the Hong Kong Youth Magazine.

Thanks for your help.

Transcript of an interview with Dr. David Lee

J: Judy Lee L: Dr. Lee, a dermatologist

J: Thank you for talking to us this morning, Dr. Lee.

L: It’s my pleasure.

J: Well, in the past decade, teenagers have increasingly taken to tattoos — an art form that was

considered taboo in the old days.

L: That’s right. I guess that has something to do with the mass media.

J: I imagine it’s very big business now.

L: Yes, it is. And you’ll be surprised to hear that many of the teenagers who go to tattoo parlours

are girls.

J: I’m not surprised. I’ve seen many girls with tattoos on their necks or shoulders. So, how does it

work? I mean, how does a person get a tattoo on his or her body?

L: First, he or she has to go to a tattoo parlour. There are quite a lot of them in Wan Chai, Tsim

Sha Tsui and Mong Kok. The process is in fact quite painful. As you probably know, a tattoo is

injected into the skin by using a machine with a sharp needle and ink. A tattooing machine can

pierce the skin as many as 3000 times a minute. So, you can imagine how painful the process is.

J: Are there any medical dangers involved with getting a tattoo?

L: Oh, yes! That’s why I believe that teenagers must think twice before getting a tattoo. Some

tattoo parlours do not pay strict attention to hygiene. You run the risk of getting a blood-borne

disease such as HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B or C when you get a tattoo.

J: That sounds scary.

L: Besides, most tattoo parlours are tucked away in small shops in dark alleys in Hong Kong. Do

you really want to get a tattoo at one of those places? I’ve seen teenagers who got their tattoos at

one of those places and they ended up in hospital because of infection.

J: Oh dear! So, what would you say to teenagers who still want to get tattoos?

L: Well, I wouldn’t encourage teenagers to get tattoos. They have to understand that the current fad

for tattoos may not last.

J: Thank you for your advice, Dr. Lee. Right, that’s all we have time for today. Thank you for

joining us. Goodbye.

Your club is organising a photography exhibition. You are going to hear four recordings of students and teachers talking about the event.

In Part A, you will have a total of four tasks to do. Follow the instructions in the Question-Answer Book and on the recording to complete the tasks. You will find all the information you need in the Question-Answer Book and on the recording. You now have two minutes to familiarise yourself with Tasks 1 to 4.

Announcer: Task 1. You are in a meeting discussing the exhibition with Miss Fung, the supervising teacher of the Photography Club. Listen to the conversation and complete the note sheet below. You now have 30 seconds to study the task. At the end of the task, you will have one and a half minutes to tidy up your answers.

(30 seconds) (beep)

Charlie: Miss Fung, do you have a minute? I want to ask you something about the

photography exhibition. Miss Fung: Sure, come in. I’m having a meeting with the principal this afternoon

about the exhibition. You came at a good time. Right, since this is our first photography exhibition at the Tsuen Wan Town Hall, I am very excited.

Charlie: Oh, great. That means the venue is confirmed. Miss Fung: Yup … at the Tsuen Wan Town Hall. The exhibition will open on the 1st

of May and will run till the 14th. Charlie: So the exhibition will last for two weeks. Miss Fung, I’ve received more

than 100 photographs from students. Miss Fung: Good. That means the judging committee will have a lot of work to do. Charlie: Yes, because the exhibition will feature only 30 of the many

photographs submitted by our students. Miss Fung: And it’ll also feature the work of two famous photographers, both are

professional photographers as well as being past students. Charlie: Do you have their names, Miss Fung? I want to put their names on the

poster, which I’m designing for the exhibition. Miss Fung: Yes, one is called James Lee. That’s ‘Lee’ with a double ‘e’. Charlie: James Lee, okay. And the other one is … Miss Fung: Belinda So. Both of them will showcase their work on places, cultures

and people. James Lee’s series is called ‘Lost Cultures’. Charlie: Hang on, just let me write that down … Lost Cultures. Miss Fung: And Belinda’s series is called ‘Going Places’. Charlie: Right. Hmm … it seems that both of their series are about travel and

different cultures.

Miss Fung: Yes, travel and different cultures, and it will be quite interesting to see the world through their lenses.

Charlie: I can’t wait. Miss Fung: The principal wants to organise a photo contest for students because he

wants to involve as many students as possible. Charlie: That’s a good idea … a photo contest. Everyone has a small digital

camera nowadays and everyone can be a photographer. Miss Fung: You mentioned just now that you have received more than 100

photographs from students. Are they all related to the theme of our exhibition, which is ‘World Cultures’?

Charlie: Yes. Most of them are related to our theme ‘World Cultures’. Miss Fung: Good. The reason why we are holding this exhibition is to encourage

students to express their creativity through photography. Charlie: Yes. Miss Fung: A further reason is to help students learn more about different world

cultures. Charlie: Just let me put the aims down. To encourage students to express their

creativity through photography and to help them learn more about different world cultures … oh, it’s 1.50 now. I’d better get going, Miss Fung.

Miss Fung: All right. Charlie: Thank you. Announcer: That is the end of Task 1. You now have one and a half minutes to tidy

up your answers. (1 minute 30 seconds)

Announcer: Task 2. You are now having a discussion with Jane, a committee member of the Photography Club, about where to place the students’ work on one of the walls in the exhibition hall. Listen to the conversation and complete the layout plan below by writing the letters of the photographs in the correct boxes. You now have 30 seconds to study the task. At the end of the task, you will have one and a half minutes to tidy up your answers.

(30 seconds) (beep)

Jane: Right, let’s decide where to put these photographs on the wall. Let’s

choose two photographs to put under ‘Hong Kong’. I’ve put the label at the top.

Charlie: In this batch, there are two photographs taken in Hong Kong. One is the Big Buddha …

Jane: The Big Buddha … right. Charlie: The other one is a portrait of a Chinese opera singer. Jane: Yes. Charlie: I think we should put the photographs of local culture on the right …

hmm … and the photographs of other cultures on the left. Jane: Good idea. So, which one would you put at the top? Charlie: I think the photograph of the Chinese opera singer is very nice. Jane: All right, let’s put the portrait of the Chinese opera singer at the top on

the right, I mean, to the right of the aluminium pole. Charlie: Sorry, what pole? Jane: The aluminium pole. It’s on the layout plan here. Charlie: You mean this dark black line on the layout is the aluminium pole? Jane: Yes. Charlie: Okay … now, which photograph should go at the top again? Jane: The portrait of the Chinese opera singer goes at the top. Charlie: Right, so the Big Buddha is going under it. Jane: Yes, at the bottom and on the right of the pole. Charlie: Okay. We have a photograph of a mother and a son. I think it was taken

in Cambodia.

Jane: Yes, it was. It is a very nice photograph. I’m looking at these three spaces at the top, and on the left of the aluminium pole.

Charlie: I think the portrait of the mother and son should go in the middle. I want to put the photograph of the Chinese temple on the left.

Jane: Okay, so that’s the mother and son there in the middle, and the Chinese temple on the left … good. Now, which photograph should we put on the right?

Charlie: How about the photograph of the two statues? Jane: Two statues? Which one? Oh, those two funny statues. Hmm … I’m not

sure about that. I don’t think it is a very good photograph. Actually, we should put the photograph of the old man on the right instead.

Charlie: Sorry, I’m confused. Where do you want to put the portrait of the old man?

Jane: Put it under the spotlight. Charlie: Okay. How about the photograph of the grey sky and the pointy

building? Jane: The photograph was taken in Malaysia. The photograph is a bit

under-exposed, so let’s put it at the bottom, on the far left of the pole. Charlie: Okay. Jane: What have we got left? Charlie: The photographs of the US flag and the two statues. Jane: Oh, put the photograph of the US flag in the middle at the bottom. Charlie: Okay, so the photograph of the two statues goes in here. That’s the only

place available. Okay. It’s done. Jane: Great. Announcer: That is the end of Task 2. You now have one and a half minutes to tidy

Announcer: Task 3. You are now in a meeting about the photography exhibition. Listen to the conversation and fill in the missing information in the spaces provided in the note sheet. You now have 30 seconds to study the task. At the end of the task, you will have one and a half minutes to tidy up your answers.

(30 seconds) (beep)

Miss Fung: Okay, good morning, everybody. Thanks for coming to the meeting

today. I know today is Friday and I’m sure you’ve got other things to do on a Friday evening but hopefully the meeting will be a short one. Do you two know each other?

Jessica: No, I don’t think so. Miss Fung: Okay, this is Charlie. Charlie is the chairperson of the school

Photography Club. He is in charge of the photography exhibition. Charlie: Hi! Jessica: Hi! Miss Fung: And Charlie, this is Jessica. Jessica is our school accountant. She takes

care of the school expenses. Okay. Right, so, as I said in my email, I wanted to discuss the cost estimates for this event, I mean, the photography exhibition. Perhaps we should begin by thinking about what we have to spend money on.

Charlie: Well, the rent for the venue is $5000 for two weeks. Miss Fung: That’s right. I suppose there’s a prize for the photo contest. Charlie: Yup. And we have to think of what the prize should be. What about a

digital camera? Jessica: An SLR digital camera is too expensive. I’m not sure if the principal

will approve it. Charlie: No, I mean a small digital camera. What do you call it? Erm … a

point-and-shoot camera. Miss Fung: There’s no point in giving away a point-and-shoot camera to the winner.

The winner may already have one. Charlie: Okay, how about a camera lens? Jessica: Again, it’s too expensive. I think most students would use a camera bag.

Page 39: Situation (p. 26) Task 1 (p. 27) Task 2 (p. 28) Task 3 (p ... · PDF filePerformance Plus for the HKDSE — Paper 3 [5] (2nd Edition) Test Paper 1 Contents Test Paper 1 Part A Situation

Charlie: Good idea. It would be a great prize for the winner of the photo contest because it is inexpensive and useful. Every photographer needs a good camera bag to protect his or her camera gear. Besides, camera bags come in all sorts of different sizes and styles. So there is a wide range of bags to choose from. Most camera bags are quite inexpensive. Some camera bags are as cheap as $200, but I reckon a good one costs about $1500.

Jessica: That’s about right. We can certainly spend $1500 on the camera bag. Miss Fung: Okay. Is that everything, Charlie? Charlie: No, we have to factor in the costs of printing and framing the

photographs. Miss Fung: That’s right. How much would both of those be? Charlie: I really don’t know. I suppose about $200 per print for professional

printing at a studio, and about $300 to frame a photograph. We have a total of 30 photographs to display. That means we have to budget $6000 for printing and $9000 for framing.

Jessica: So, the total cost of printing and framing 30 photographs is $15 000. Is that right? That sounds a lot to me.

Charlie: Yes, that sounds right. Things cost a lot these days. Miss Fung: And on top of that, we need to hire a minivan to transport the framed

photographs to the venue, which will cost at least $300. Charlie: Yes. We need to budget for that. Jessica: I have got that written down. Miss Fung: Right, let’s move on to what needs to be done. First, the booking of a

minivan to transport the framed photographs to the venue. Charlie, could you be responsible for that?

Charlie: For what? Miss Fung: For booking a minivan. Charlie: Well, I really don’t know where to book a minivan … Jessica: I can book a minivan for you. Just give me the date. I know a minivan

driver. I can contact him. Miss Fung: Right, Jessica. You contact the minivan driver and make a booking for

us. Now, how about the printing and framing of the photographs? Charlie: Why don’t I send them to the shop for printing and framing next week? Miss Fung: Good idea, Charlie. It’s really important to get that done a week before

the exhibition. And I will buy the prize — the camera bag for the photo contest. That’s about all for today. Let us meet again next week at the same time.

Announcer: Task 4. You are now calling a catering company to order food and drinks for the opening night of the photography exhibition. Listen to the conversation and complete the order form below and on the next page. The items may not be mentioned in the same order as they appear in the Question-Answer Book.

You now have 30 seconds to study the task. At the end of the task, you will have two minutes to tidy up your answers.

(30 seconds) (beep)

Staff: Good morning, The Gourmet Café. May I help you? Charlie: Yes, I would like to use your catering service. My school is having an

opening night for a photography exhibition at the Tsuen Wan Town Hall on the 1st of May. I was wondering if you could cater for us.

Staff: No problem. Charlie: Can I place orders with you over the phone? I have the food order form

with me now. Staff: Certainly. You know our terms and conditions, don’t you? Charlie: Sorry, what terms and conditions? Staff: Once you place an order, we’ll ask you to pay a deposit of $500. Charlie: A $500 deposit, no problem. Staff: And the balance must be paid three days before the date of the event.

Are you fine with that? Charlie: I suppose I can do that. Just let me write that down. A $500 deposit is

required once the order is placed, and the balance must be paid three days before the date of the event. I guess that’s fair.

Staff: And we accept cash only. Charlie: Cash only … so you won’t take cheques or credit cards? Staff: No, no cheques or credit cards, sir. Charlie: Okay. Now, may I place my order? Staff: Certainly. How many guests are you expecting on the opening night? Charlie: At least 200 guests. Staff: Would you like to get some finger food for your guests? Our buffalo

wings are very good.

Page 42: Situation (p. 26) Task 1 (p. 27) Task 2 (p. 28) Task 3 (p ... · PDF filePerformance Plus for the HKDSE — Paper 3 [5] (2nd Edition) Test Paper 1 Contents Test Paper 1 Part A Situation

Charlie: I’m sure your buffalo wings are delicious but I’m not sure if they are appropriate for the event. You know, they are difficult to eat, and there is too much sauce on the wings. No, no buffalo wings.

Staff: Okay. How about some samosas? Charlie: Samosas? What are they? Staff: They are pastries containing spiced vegetables and beef. They’re great

for parties. They are bite-sized pieces, not too big. Charlie: I haven’t tried samosas but I’ll give it a go. Since they are bite-sized

pieces, they shouldn’t be too messy to eat. How many do you think I should order?

Staff: Get 200 pieces. That way, each guest can have one piece. Charlie: All right, 200 pieces of beef samosas. Just let me make a note of it.

Okay. Staff: Would you like to order some Thai crab cakes? They’re delicious. Charlie: No, thanks. I’m afraid they are too fishy. I would rather order some

finger sandwiches because they are easy to eat. Could you give me 150 tuna sandwiches, please?

Staff: Of course … 150 pieces of tuna sandwiches … all right. How about some Mexican tacos? They’re really good.

Charlie: Mexican tacos. I love them. They are spicy and tasty. And the other thing is, they are really filling. You know, tacos fill you up, not like other finger food, which just leave you feeling hungry. Okay, I would like to order 240 pieces.

Staff: Okay. How about some sushi? Charlie: Actually, I was trying to avoid that. Japanese isn’t my favourite cuisine.

But it seems that everyone loves sushi in Hong Kong. Okay, let me order 300 pieces of assorted sushi.

Staff: Oh, you’ve missed out on the soup. We have different kinds of soup like pumpkin soup, tomato soup or potato soup.

Charlie: I’m sure your soup is tasty but it is just difficult to eat soup without making noises. I don’t think it’s a good idea to serve soup at the event. Actually, I think I’ve ordered enough food items. Now, let me order some drinks.

Staff: All our soft drinks come in 12 oz cans. Charlie: I don’t want soft drinks. Do you have fruit juices? I mean, fresh ones? Staff: Sorry, we don’t serve fresh fruit juices. But we do have a very nice

fruit punch. It comes in 16 oz cans.

Charlie: I’ve tried your fruit punch before and it is cool and refreshing. Okay I’ll order 250 cans of fruit punch.

Staff: I suppose you don’t want alcohol at the event, do you? Charlie: No, no alcohol. So, how much is the total cost of the food and drinks? Staff: Just a second, let me calculate the total cost for you. Staff: Hmm … the total cost is $5300. That includes delivery of the food and

drinks as well as the services of three waiters at the venue. Charlie: That’s wonderful. I guess that’s it for my order. Staff: Thank you for using our catering company. Please hold on for a minute.

I will transfer you to our manager and he will ask you for other details like address and delivery time. His name is George.

Charlie: All right, thanks a lot. Staff: You’re welcome. Announcer: That is the end of Task 4. You now have two minutes to complete your

Announcer: Part B. Situation. You are Ricky Leung, a Secondary 5 student at Sir Edward Memorial College. You are the chairperson of the school English Club. Your school principal, Mr. Alex Wong, has asked you to help produce a school magazine called Pop Culture. You will work with Miss Judy Lee, an English teacher who is responsible for the contents of the magazine. You will listen to a conversation between you and Miss Lee about the magazine. Before the recording is played, you will have five minutes to study the Question-Answer Book and the Data File for Part B1 and the Question-Answer Book and the Data File for Part B2. Remember you must choose to do the tasks in either Part B1 or Part B2. Do not attempt both Parts B1 and B2. Complete the tasks by following the instructions in the Question-Answer Book that you choose and on the recording. You will find all the information you need in the Question-Answer Book, the Data File that you choose and on the recording. As you listen, you can make notes on page 3 of the Data File. You now have five minutes to familiarise yourself with the Part B Question-Answer Book and the Data File.

Miss Lee: Okay, let’s get started. Ricky, have you finished the table of contents? Ricky: Hmm … sorry, Miss Lee, I’ve managed to finish only part of it. Miss Lee: Do you have a copy of the draft with you? Ricky: Yes, I do. Oh, here it is. Miss Lee: Let’s go through the table of contents together. As we speak, you can

make changes to the draft and add the missing information. Ricky: Great! That’ll save me a lot of time. Miss Lee: All right. First, Section 1, the introduction … will there be a mission

statement? Ricky: Yes, there will be a mission statement on the first page. Miss Lee: Good … and is that all we have in the introduction? Ricky: No, the principal suggested that we add the ‘Highlights of This Issue’

to the introduction. Miss Lee: All right, put the ‘Highlights of This Issue’ on page 2 then. Ricky: Okay. The ‘Highlights of This Issue’… on page 2 … in the

introduction. Miss Lee: I think that’s enough for the content section of the introduction. Right,

let’s go to the second section — ‘Short Articles’. Did you manage to find any students who are willing to write for us?

Ricky: Yes, I did. I contacted four students. Miss Lee: And? Ricky: Well, two of them are willing to write for us on a regular basis. The

other two said they could not commit to us because they have to prepare for the public examination.

Miss Lee: That’s okay. Have those two decided what to write about? Ricky: Yes, they have. A Secondary 5 student named Linda Leung will write

about music. Miss Lee: What is the topic of her article? Ricky: Her topic is … let me see … ‘Hong Kong Pop Music’. Miss Lee: Nice topic. Ricky: Yes. Miss Lee: Can you add that to the table of contents? Ricky: Sure, I’ll put the topic before the name of the author. Now it reads,

‘Hong Kong Pop Music’ by Linda Leung. Miss Lee: And what will the other student write about? What’s his name? Ricky: Hmm … his name is Nick Wong. He will write about fashion. Miss Lee: Fashion?

Ricky: Yeah. His article is titled ‘Trendy Clothes for Teenagers’. Miss Lee: So, ‘Trendy Clothes for Teenagers’ by Nick Wong. Good. Oh, I’ve got

one student from Secondary 6 who is willing to write regularly for us. His name is James Chan. James has written a one-page article about pop stars in Hong Kong. It’s an excellent article. The topic is ‘Pop Idols’. Let’s add that to the magazine too.

Ricky: Sure … sorry, Miss Lee, what is his name again? Miss Lee: James Chan. Ricky: So, ‘Pop Idols’ by James Chan. Miss Lee: Okay, what’s next? Ricky: The next section is ‘Special Reports’. I’ve got one report for the new

issue ... and … it was written by … let me see … it was written by Mary Lee and it is called ‘Comic Book Heroes’. Oh, yesterday, the principal asked me to add one more report by Nancy Kwan to this section.

Miss Lee: No problem. What is the title of her report? Ricky: It’s called ‘Teen Dating’. Miss Lee: So, ‘Teen Dating’ by Nancy Kwan. Right. Now, how many interviews

will there be in the new issue? Ricky: There will be two interviews. One is an interview with the chairperson

of the PTA … Miss Lee: That’s right. Ricky: And the other one is an interview with a pop singer in Hong Kong. Miss Lee: Who’s the pop singer? Ricky: Kelly Wong. She is very popular in Hong Kong. Miss Lee: How did you get the interview? Ricky: One of our writers is Kelly Wong’s cousin. So, he approached Kelly

and she agreed to give us an interview. Miss Lee: Good job. Students should be interested in the article. Make sure you

put that down in the contents. Ricky: Shall I write ‘Interview with Pop Singer Kelly Wong’ in the table of

contents? Miss Lee: Yes, ‘Interview with Pop Singer Kelly Wong’. Now, Section 5,

‘Letters and Advice Column’. What will we put in this section? Ricky: Two things. We’ll put ‘Letters to the Editor’ and an ‘Advice Column’

in this section.

Miss Lee: Good. So, we have finally sorted out the table of contents. Ricky, I want you to say something about the new school magazine in the morning assembly next week. Could you draft a speech for that?

Ricky: Sure. What would you like me to say to the students? Miss Lee: Well, first, tell students that the magazine will be published in late

March. Ricky: Will be published in late March, okay. Miss Lee: And we need to tell them why we created this school magazine. Ricky: You mean the aims of the magazine? Miss Lee: Yes, the aims. The magazine aims to give students the latest news on

lifestyle, music and pop culture. Could you please write that down, Ricky?

Ricky: Yes. To give students the latest news on lifestyle, music and pop culture.

Miss Lee: Another aim of the magazine is to provide students with an opportunity to publish their work and to exchange viewpoints. I’ll send you some guidelines this afternoon. I think you should say something about the grant too. Hmm … tell them that although we have received a grant from the principal, the amount is not enough to cover the printing costs, and we need an extra $10 000.

Ricky: And how are we going to get this extra $10 000? Miss Lee: We are going to raise the money through a charity sale, which will be

held on the 20th of January. Ricky: So, a charity sale on the 20th of January. Oh, it’s almost two o’clock.

I’d better get going. Miss Lee: I’ll send you some guidelines tonight. Ricky: All right, Miss Lee. Thanks. Announcer: That is the end of the listening component of this test. You will have

one hour and fifteen minutes to complete the written tasks in either Part B1 or Part B2. An announcement will be made when time is up.
