In Grade 9, students sample the specialization programs, in Grade 10, each student choose introductory specialty courses before selecting their preferred focus in Grades 11 and 12. Specialties include Business Applications, Construction or Manufacturing Technology, Hospitality Services, Transportation Technology and Personal Services/Health Care. Each program focuses on generic work and employment skills and includes practical work-related experience supported by a strong academic core. Sir Robert L. Borden BTI offers choices for students who are good at hands-on learning. Our school helps students do well through workplace learning. Apprenticeship programs and college programs are often the goals of our students. If you find schoolwork hard, you may find that Borden can help you be successful. Our program focuses on good work skills and a positive attitude. Our program includes literacy and numeracy that you need for everyday life. After a course in the basics, you will study about the world of marketing and ICT. In marketing, you can study retail or sports. Construction/ManufacturingConstruction and Manufacturing are area with many jobs. Weprepare you for college or apprenticeship.  You get to build yourskills in woodworking, construction and metalwork.  We have shopswith the latest tools of the trade.  You can learn to build and designproducts to current industry standards in our wood and metalshops.

Hospitality ServicesWe teach you how to prepare current dishes!  You can choose fromthree areas of Hospitality Services.  They are quantity cooking,restaurant services and baking.  You will design menus and helpoperate a food service area.  You will practice what you learn in areal restaurant.  You will make delicious lunches for your friends,teachers and neighbours.

Transportation TechnologyYou can learn all about transportation at Borden.  We have classesin auto mechanics, auto body and small engines.  Our shops areup-to-date.  Learn the basics in Grade 9 and 10, and in Grade 11you can choose your favourite and study in a real-workenvironment.  This prepares you for college or apprenticeships.

Personal Services/Health CareYou can study Cosmetology and Aesthetics or HealthCare at Borden.  Practice the skills you learn in our new hair salonand our nursing room.  Learn from professionals.  Develop the skillsneeded for future college or employment.  Practice what you learnin Co-op.

Student Life - Where You Belong

Start your day right with breakfast in the Maple Leaf Room,then make your way to team practice, or perhaps a club.Spend lunch in the “Doug-Out” playing air hockey, a videogame or Dominoes with your friends. Finish the day doingyour homework in Study Hall before going home.  AtBorden, you will spend your day in both shops andclassrooms. Our classrooms are like the work world. InHospitality Services, you prepare food and provide servicein the school cafeteria and teachers' dining room. You mightalso get to work with the Daily Bread Food Bank. In Auto,you can work on your own car or on a teacher`s car. InCosmetology, you can have your nails done, give a facial ortrim your beard. In Construction, you will make realtake-home projects to use in your home. If you areinterested in sports why not try football, basketball,volleyball, cheerleading or baseball just to list a few. Join aclub like Graphic Novels, Board Games, Art, Sewing, Bakingand lots more. Our Student Council organizes and runsassemblies, dances, and many other activities. Be a part ofBrothers Unlimited, Borden Rocks the Block or Girls` NightOut. Join us and join in the fun!

What Sets Us Apart

At Borden you learn real job skills.  In grade 12, you willstudy one full semester in the workplace.  CharacterEducation in your classes is part of what will prepare you forthis.  Our Focus on Success Program helps students whoneed extra support in this area. You do not study French atBorden.  Instead, you take extra technology courses. Youwill build your skills in literacy and numeracy in all yourclasses. Two full time Special Education rooms support youreducational needs.  Many of our classes have EducationalAssistants who help you with your work every day.

Parent and Community Engagement

Borden has an active School Council. Parents, community and staffmeet to discuss common issues. The program might include a roundtable discussion or a helpful workshop. We have information nightsfor of Grade 8 and Grade 9 parents every year. Our SchoolResource Officer from the Toronto Police is here to help ourstudents. We also have associations with Rosalie Hall, YouthLink,Tropicana, East Metro, Kennedy Youth Services and othercommunity service providers. You can connect through ourGuidance Department, Social Worker and Child and YouthCounsellor. Borden Rocks the Block is a regular community eventthat our staff and students organize. In the spring, theneighbourhood joins us for this exciting carnival. Every Wednesday our staff and students prepare and serve acommunity lunch.
