SINUMERIK CNC performance – the machining standard

SINUMERIK CNCs set standards relating to all aspects of machining performance.

SINUMERIK sets the pace – whether precision and speed, energy efficiency and safety or reducing cycle times.

Highest precisionSINUMERIK CNC and SINAMICS drives compute with high-performance 80-bit NANOFP accuracy. This eliminates rounding errors and results in an extremely high internal computational precision in the complete controller cascade. Further, a dynamic feed forward control ensures that the follow-ing error is almost completely compensated – and jerk limiting reduces the stress on the mechanical system when axes accelerate. Using its Dynamic Servo Control, SINAMICS control technology provides additional position control in the drive – representing an additional advantage by achieving an increased level of disturbance resistance of the machine control

Maximum speedWhen machining many CNC blocks in the shortest time, for example, free-form surfaces, the machining process itself no longer defines the speed, but the performance of the CNC. Here, with its Advanced Surface and Top Surface features, SINUMERIK offers the ideal solution. Advanced Surface stands for state-of-the-art control algorithms, such as Look Ahead or the dynamic compression of linear and circular blocks in 5th degree poly-nomials (NURBS). With Advanced Surface and Top Surface, machines can be operated at their physical limits.

Shortest idle timesEspecially in large series production, idle times, where the machine is no longer productive, represent a critical productivity-inhibiting factor. Here, SINUMERIK provides the optimum solution with its synchronous architec-ture and intelligent functions, such as synchronized actions and asynchro-nous sub-programs. For instance, loading equipment can be implemented without having to make time-consuming interventions in the PLC adapta-tion control.

SINUMERIK Operate – the state-of-the-art operating concept for the 21st century

SINUMERIK Operate offers the highest level of operator friendliness at the machine tool – setting the standard

for efficient machine tool operation www.siemens.com/sinumerik-operate

Innovative details for user-friendly operationWith Animated Elements, SINUMERIK Operate makes it extremely easy to enter parameters. Animated Elements completely redefine what graphic programming and operation really mean – using a unique display with moving image sequences.

Shortcuts in SINUMERIK Operate allow data to be quickly entered at the operator panel – saving operators a lot of time.

Program Manager for a better overviewSimple data handling – just the same as when using a PC: SINUMERIK makes it all possible with its Program Manager. Contents in DXF, BMP, PDF, JPG and HTML formats, from various storage media, are transparently displayed. CNC programs can be transferred from the data server to the CNC memory by simply copying and pasting. And now it has been made even simpler: Large workpieces can be selected in the Program Manager, and directly executed via the company network, USB stick or CF card.

SinuTrain for SINUMERIK OperateThe SinuTrain NC programming station, which is identical to the control system, brings SINUMERIK Operate – including animated machine operator panel – to the PC. This facilitates convenient job preparation in a familiar work environment. NC programs can be directly generated here, and as a result of the original SINUMERIK CNC kernel, can be verified before they are transferred to a real machine. Users profit from higher machine availability and reliability. Further, SinuTrain can be ideally used for training personnel on how to operate and program SINUMERIK – as well as for presenting and testing new SINUMERIK functions www.siemens.com/sinutrain

Intelligent JOG modeIn SINUMERIK Operate, the intelligent JOG mode provides graphic, interactive support for all typical setup functions for turning and milling machines. This means that a tool can be simply loaded with just three clicks. On lathes, face turning of a blank or boring soft clamping jaws is also directly realized in the intelligent JOG mode – without having to gen-erate a part program. The extended retract function allows a tool to be retracted after a power failure, and to be returned to the precise point of interruption after power has been restored. This keeps unproductive times to an absolute minimum.

Measuring a tool and setting the zero offsetMeasuring tools and determining the zero offset are optimally supported in the intelligent JOG mode: Measuring tools is a simple affair for SINUMERIK. Irrespective of whether the tool geometry is simply “scratched” or deter-mined using a tool measuring system – by pressing just one key, the geometry is transferred into the tool offset memory of the CNC. Setting the workpiece zero is also intuitively supported using animated screen forms.

Transparent tool managementSINUMERIK provides the perfect command station when it comes to tool management. Tool data and turret location information are transparently displayed on a screen. The selection of a suitable turret location is com-pletely automatic: Select the tool, and press a key – SINUMERIK already suggests a suitable turret location. It goes without saying that each tool’s lifetime is monitored, and when required, the appropriate replacement tool is loaded.

SINUMERIK Operate – intuitive handling, shorter setup times

Based on an intelligent JOG mode and intuitive tool management, SINUMERIK Operate graphically and

interactively supports all of the typical setup functions. This keeps unproductive times to an absolute minimum.

10

SINUMERIK Operate – perfect for all programming tasks

With various programming languages, SINUMERIK supports every CNC programming method that is used around

the world – from machining individual parts, up to large series production.

For large series …Shortest machining times for large series production and with the highest flexibility for special applications: SINUMERIK CNCs make this possible with advanced CNC programming based on high-level language elements. Using programGUIDE, SINUMERIK CNC programs can be easily combined with high-performance technology and measuring cycles. Even classic ISO codes can be programmed. As a consequence, SINUMERIK is especially attractive for machine operators who prefer this classic programming method.

… and small seriesThe programming time is a decisive productivity factor for small series production and individual parts. When it comes to this discipline, ShopTurn machining step programming is unbeatable. Machining operations such as drilling, centering, plunging and pocket milling are shown in the form of machining steps. Even for complicated machining operations, CNC pro-grams are extremely compact and easy to read. Using dynamic broken-line graphics, which are absolutely unique in the market, all of the geometrical elements can be displayed to scale in the CNC program.

CNC simulation for reliable and safe processesSINUMERIK CNC simulation guarantees maximum process reliability and safety as the real geometries of the tools are always used. It goes without saying that the simulation shows the precise image of the required machining operation – not just brilliant, colorful graphics. Whether face or peripheral surfaces, swiveled workpiece planes or even machining in several channels, SINUMERIK CNC simulation simulates every machining type. With the moldmaking quick view, even very large part programs can be displayed on the screen within seconds.

11

Cycle-controlled lathes are frequently used for

repairing and machining individual parts.

The requirement placed on the control is quite

clear: It must be especially simple to program.

SINUMERIK controls are the optimum solution.

“Manual machine” offers the highest flexibility when it comes to operation and programmingCycle-controlled lathes are predominantly used to machine individual parts or small series. The operator of a machine such as this expects a high degree of pro-gramming flexibility from the CNC. All SINUMERIK CNCs offer this in the form of the “Manual machine” function. This function allows machining operations to be manually performed – without a program having to be written. The operator is navigated in a user-friendly way to the finished workpiece. This is achieved using special functions, which support the handwheels of a machine of this type and the standard use of machining cycles. This makes the “Manual machine” function ideal for entry-level CNC personnel.

Cycle-controlled turning with SINUMERIK

The “Manual machine” function also offers additional operator options for cycle-controlled lathes. It allows straight lines and inclines to be turned using crossover switches, individual machining of turning and drilling cycles as well as contours without having to generate a program. This function also makes it easy to repair threads.

Cycle-controlled turning with SINUMERIK

12

SINUMERIK technology cycles for standard CNC lathesIntelligent turning cycles are the “core" of a lathe. This is the reason that SINUMERIK CNCs have a comprehensive range of turning functions: cutting, grooving, undercut and thread cycles up to machining freely definable con-tours and residual material detection. SINUMERIK complies with each and every turning requirement when it comes to machining strategies – such as roughing or finishing parallel to the axis and contour, plunging or plunge turning.

When it comes to producing basic turned parts in large series

production, rugged and compact CNCs and programming in

line with shopfloor requirements are required. Control

performance that is precisely tailored to the application is

also just as important. The wide SINUMERIK portfolio comes

into its own here, and guarantees the optimum CNC system.

Broad SINUMERIK portfolioStandard CNC turning is simple for all SINUMERIK CNCs. Based on the required functional scope, the required performance and the number of axes, the optimum SINUMERIK is available for each and every application.

Machines with main and counterspindle, Y axes and driven tools are optimally supported by the extensive turning and milling cycle package of SINUMERIK 828 controls and SINUMERIK 840D sl.

Standard CNC turning with SINUMERIK

13

Technology cycle, counterspindleThe counterspindle technology cycle allows machining to be performed on two spindles on one lathe. With this configuration, workpieces are automatically transferred between the spindles. Counterspindle machining increases the productivity and machining quality as the workpiece does not have to be manually reclamped.

Standard CNC turning with SINUMERIK

Fast and effective plunge turningFast from the drawing to the workpiece: Especially for dif-ficult contours with relief cuts, plunge turning represents the ideal machining process. Using just one tool, the complete contour can be machined with plunge and plunge turning cycles. It is not necessary to set up and change tools. As usual, when programming, the contour is generated and linked with the plunge turning cycle. There are no additional programming costs.

14

Innovative CNC functions for milling on lathesThe state-of-the-art and standard SINUMERIK Operate user interface simply makes it possible: milling on lathes. The same look & feel when it comes to machining and the comprehensive CNC functions lead to the optimum solution for the particular application.

Irrespective as to whether parts should be milled or machined on the face or peripheral surface: With TRANSMIT and TRACYL, the machine plane is precisely transformed at the correct location. This is all done completely automatically thanks to the NC functionality embedded in SINUMERIK Operate – without requiring a CAD/CAM system or calculator. TRANSMIT makes face machining easy

C axis fully utilized: A lathe spindle operated in the C-axis mode is more than just a simple positioning axis. Using the TRANSMIT function in SINUMERIK Operate, driven tools can be used to drill and mill on the face side of a workpiece.

Flexible, high-performance CNCs –

suitable for programming in a

shopfloor environment – are required

if workpieces are to be milled on

turning machines.

Milling on lathes with SINUMERIK

15

Milling on lathes with SINUMERIK

Outstanding peripheral surface machining with TRACYLTurning machines equipped with SINUMERIK Operate are the absolute masters when it comes to peripheral surface machining. Even when the tool offset is activated, slots with parallel walls can be machined. Geometries are sim-ply programmed in the flattened surface. The CNC takes care of everything else.

SINUMERIK technology cycles for milling applicationsSINUMERIK cycles support users when it comes to pro-gramming workpieces even faster and more simply. Even for complex machining tasks, comprehensive machining steps can be more simply and quickly realized by using innovative cycles – for example trochoidal milling and plunge cutting for machining with low cutting pressure and low deformation levels. And of course, SINUMERIK CNCs provide all of the cycles and functions that are required for milling.

16

Multi-channel machining made easyIn this segment, lathes with several tool slides are considered to be high-end machines. SINUMERIK Operate facilitates that these multi-channel machining operations can be even more efficiently programmed. SINUMERIK manages the individual tool slides in the various channels. Programs must be generated for each channel, which then run simultaneously during machining. In SINUMERIK Operate, the “programSync” function is a high-perform- ance editor, which, adapted to the channel structure of the machine, permits programs to be simultaneously edited, aligned and optimized. This is irrespective as to whether programming in DIN/ISO or in ShopTurn.

Workpiece simulation for multi-channel machiningOutstanding visualization of multi-channel machining can be realized by using simulation in SINUMERIK Operate. This results in a higher degree of reliability and safety through 3D simulation with 3-plane view and volume model of the machined part – including simultaneous recording in automatic operation. Simulation also offers comprehensive monitoring and optimizing options for multi-channel programming by automatically calculating the time required for each machining step.

For multi-channel machining on

lathes, high cutting volumes must be

removed. For large series production,

it is also crucial to have short cycle

times. High-performance and flexible

CNC systems are required to address

these requirements.

Multi-channel machining with SINUMERIK

17

Efficient turning with 4-axis cuttingSimultaneous machining using two turning tools at one machining profile offers some decisive advantages: The amount of stock removed can be significantly increased in the same time period. And the risk of bending is avoided for long, straight workpieces.

SINUMERIK cutting cycleUsing the SINUMERIK contour cutting cycle, sophisticated and demanding 4-axis turning can be directly pro-grammed at the machine without requiring a CAD/CAM system. Contour and basic cutting parameters can be simply entered in the control channel. The contour cutting cycle automatically generates the CNC sequences required for the specific 4-axis turning strategy. Machining with one tool can be expanded to involve two tools for highly productive Balance Cutting by using just two additional parameters.
