2 Timothy 3:1-5 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: (2) For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers,

disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, (3) unloving, unforgiving,

slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, (4) traitors,

headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, (5) having a

form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!

CHRISTIANITY IS NOT JUST WHAT YOU HAVE STOPPED DOING BUT WHAT YOU HAVE

STARTED DOING!

James 4:17 Therefore, to him who

knows to do good and does not do it,

to him it is sin.

SINS OF OMISSIONA. In this list of sins there are two types.

1. Sins of Commission – Doing those things we should not have done: lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, slanderers, brutal, despisers of good, (4) traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,

2. Sins of Omission – Failing to do those things we should have: unthankful, unholy, (3) unloving, unforgiving, without self-control (uncontrolled). The prefix “un” means “not”.

B. We are going to focus this morning on the sins of omission from 2 Timothy 3:1-5.

C. Tonight we will look at some sins of omission from Rom 1:28-32. Later we will look at other texts.

I. DON'T BE UNTHANKFUL

A. PART OF THE REASON FOR PERILOUS TIMES - (2 Tim 3:1-5) But know this, that in the last, days perilous times will come: {2} For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, {3} unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, {4} traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, {5} having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!

I. DON'T BE UNTHANKFULB. GOD GIVES UP THE UNTHANKFUL AND THOSE

WHO DO NOT GLORIFY HIM - (Rom 1:18-25) For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, {19} because what may be known of God is manifest in them, God has shown it to them. {20} For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they without excuse, {21} because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.

I. DON'T BE UNTHANKFUL

{22} Professing to be wise, they became fools, {23} and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man; and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things. {24} Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, {25} who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, is blessed forever. Amen.

I. DON'T BE UNTHANKFUL

C. WE ARE COMMANDED TO BE THANKFUL - (Col 3:12-15) Therefore, as the elect of God, and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; {13} bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so also must do. {14} But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. {15} and let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.

II. DON’T BE UNHOLY A. 1 Timothy 1:8-10 But we know that the law

is good if one uses it lawfully, (9) knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, (10) for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine,

Page 12: sins of omission 1

II. DON’T BE UNHOLY B. 2 Peter 3:10-11 But the day of the Lord will come

as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. (11) Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness,

C. 1 Peter 1:14-16 as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; (15) but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, (16) because it is written, "Be holy, for I am holy."

Page 13: sins of omission 1

II. DON’T BE UNHOLY D. Colossians 1:21-23 And you, who once

were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled (22) in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight-- (23) if indeed you continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel which you heard, which was preached to every creature under heaven, of which I, Paul, became a minister.

II. DON’T BE UNHOLY E. Romans 12:1-2 (1) I beseech you therefore,

brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. (2) And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

III. DON’T BE UNLOVINGA. Romans 1:28-32 And even as they did not like to

retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; (29) being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, (30) backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, (31) undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; (32) who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.

III. DON’T BE UNLOVINGB. 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 Though I speak with

the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. (2) And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. (3) And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.

III. DON’T BE UNLOVING

C. 1 John 4:19-21 (19) We love Him because He first loved us. (20) If someone says, "I love God," and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? (21) And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also.

IV. DON'T BE UNFORGIVINGA.

Page 19: sins of omission 1

IV. DON'T BE UNFORGIVINGB. WE MUST FORGIVE TO BE FORGIVEN -

(Mat 6:12-14) And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. {13} And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. {14} "For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

C. WE FORGIVE BECAUSE GOD FORGAVE US - (Eph 4:32) And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ forgave you.

Page 20: sins of omission 1

IV. DON'T BE UNFORGIVING

D. FORGIVENESS MUST BE CONTINUAL AND FROM THE HEART - (Mat 18:21-35) Then Peter came to Him and said, "Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?" {22} Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven UNFORGIVING SERVANT{35} "So My heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you, from his heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses."

Page 21: sins of omission 1

V. DON’T BE UNCONTROLLED

A. Acts 24:25 Now as he reasoned about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and answered, "Go away for now; when I have a convenient time I will call for you."

B. Galatians 5:22-23 (22) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, (23) gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.

Page 22: sins of omission 1

V. DON’T BE UNCONTROLLED

C. 2 Peter 1:5-11 (5) But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, (6) to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, (7) to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. (8) For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. (9) For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins. (10) Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; (11) for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
